Cold, uncaring, sociopath. These are all words that would suit Lucien's personality well. He is rather detached from his emotions most of the time, maintaining a calm, collected front even when others would fall apart. That isn't to say he is entirely unfeeling, but rather he has chosen to disregard his own emotions for the most part to help him distinguish between his own feelings and those his ability imparts upon him. His own emotions are somewhat muted, a hint at best of what it is to truly feel something.
Oftentimes, Lucien can get confused easily simply because he doesn't understand why people feel the way they do about certain things. As such it isn't uncommon for him to say something that others find offensive only for him to end up puzzled over their reactions.
Strengths
- Calm - Lucien is usually a rather calm and collected individual, he has previously been held at gun point and not even flinched.
- Listener - He may not particularly care, but if someone needs to talk without being judged, Lucien is a fairly good listener.
- Honest - Lucien doesn't see much point in lying and thus he is usually honest about everything, even if it's not exactly the best thing in some situations.
Weaknesses
- Social interactions - Lucien's detachment from his emotion often leads to him saying or doing the wrong thing while interacting with others.
- Lack of motivation - Partially due to how little he feels, but Lucien doesn't really put any effort into things beyond what is necessary, this is especially the case when dealing with other people.
- Insomniac - Frequent nightmares as a child left Lucien unable to fall asleep without medication or unless he is completely exhausted.
Fears
- Sleeping - If only because of the nightmares it brings, someone trying to get him to sleep may be one of the few things that will cause Lucien to panic and show his feelings.
- His emotions - Since he rarely feels anything and when he does it's not the full extent of his feelings, he's scared of what it is he truly feels about things.
- Darkness and being blindfolded - He is scared of his vision being taken away from him, it leaves him feeling like he is not in control. Most of his nightmares involve darkness in one form or another.
Emotion Control / Pathokinesis.
Power Class
Psychic.
Power Description
Those with this ability can sense and manipulate the emotions of other living beings, although it has a fairly limited range that can be increased with practice. Currently Lucien can accurately sense the emotions of others within his range and can make his target's current emotions stronger or weaker (for example: increasing someone's anger, perhaps prompting them to resort to violence; or decreasing that anger, making that person less likely to lash out) though he cannot do this to a great extent.
While he mostly can chose whether or not he is able to actively influence the emotions of others, he cannot currently turn off his ability to sense those emotions. Lucien is constantly bombarded by the feelings of others to the point that he has had to basically shut down his own emotions to save himself from getting confused between his emotions and the emotions of those around him.
Power Limitations and Weaknesses
- Crowded areas can cause Lucien to become overwhelmed with the emotions of others, which is why he often detaches his own.
- It has a limited range, usually the size of an average classroom.
- If Lucien feels any strong emotions he can accidentally cause others to feel that emotion as well.
- Lucien can only affect those emotions that his target is currently feeling, he cannot introduce emotions they are not currently feeling.
- Currently Lucien is limited to affecting one person's emotions at a time.
The Ashford family, while not nobility, were well respected members of society who had climbed their way up the social ladder and remained firmly near the top for three generations thus far. The couple had two sons, one set to inherit their father's name, the other their mother's, they had no need of another child, no love to spare and they had been told by the doctors that it was unlikely to happen. And so when Lucien came along it was a surprise to all. A most unwelcome surprise. Lucien was raised apart from his family, always held at a distance no matter what he achieved to try and gain the attention of his parents and brothers. He could only watch with longing as his siblings received praise and love while he was left with nothing.
Shortly after Lucien's sixth birthday the child was wandering the grounds of their home when he was knocked out and taken by a group of thugs who intended to ransom him back to his parents. He spent much of this time locked in a small room, blindfold tied tightly over his eyes. Of course, as it turned out his parents were more than happy to let those thugs keep him despite how they had threatened to kill the child. But the leader of the group was perhaps a little smarter than some and decided that rather than killing the boy they would use some of his black market contacts to sell Lucien on as a slave.
And so a month and a half after he was kidnapped, Lucien was bought by a gang who needed a messenger.
Lucien spent the next few years of his life as part of the gang, becoming immersed in their ways while awake, even as he suffered from nightmares as he slept. By the time he was ten he was unable to sleep without the help of medication or unless exhausted to the point of passing out. At the age of twelve he picked up smoking from one of the older gang members, sneaking drinks of alcohol occasionally barely a month before turning thirteen. By fourteen he was well on his way to becoming a full-fledged member himself.
It was three months after his fourteenth birthday when things changed. Sent on a job to prove his worth, he only had one of his mentors along for company. He would either pass this trial or they would strike him down. He was to infiltrate a high-class gathering of people and while there steal a few trinkets and plant evidence of corruption in places it would surely by found. Things were going smoothly, until Lucien came face-to-face with his mother.
Despite the fact it had been eight years, not much had changed about the boy's appearance expect for his height and the way he carried himself. So it wasn't hard for the woman to recognise him. Childish hope fluttered in his chest, here was his chance to reunite with his family! He could leave the gang and everything would go back to how it used to be. Just as they were about to speak to one another, red blossomed from her chest as a knife found itself buried there. Turning, Lucien saw his mentor lingering in the doorway and something inside the teen snapped.
Despair flooded the room and in the back of his mind Lucien barely noticed his father and brothers entering the room only to be brought to their knees from the weight of emotion pressing down upon them. His mentor, long conditioned to turn off his own emotions, barely managed to make his way over to Lucien, and with a strike to the head the intense sorrow vanished.
When Lucien awoke he was in the dark again, but something was different than before. Like a sixth sense had been turned on in the back of his mind. He could somehow tell where the three others in the room were simply by the emotions they were feeling. He could tell that his mentor seemed curious about something while the two others were more apprehensive.
As it turned out he had failed in his job, but his awakened ability meant that the gang still had some use for him. The fourteen year old was given a barren apartment to live in and told to practice his ability so that he could use it again. Of course, they wouldn't just let him do so without surveillance. And of course, the lives of the rest of his rediscovered family were hung over his head as blackmail to ensure his loyalty.
It wasn't as easy as he thought. As soon as he stepped outside of his new home he was bombarded with enough emotions that it brought him to his knees and nearly caused Lucien to pass out. He dragged himself back inside before collapsing. The next attempt wasn't much better, nor those after that. In fact to took several months of slowly but surely closing off his own emotions for him to stop himself from being overwhelmed.
Once he was capable of going out in public without risk of his ability getting the better of him, Lucien started doing so often, slowly building up a tolerance before his impatient mentor pushed him into trying to control those emotions he could feel.
He had no success there. Whatever it was that triggered his ability to do so before seemed to be a one-time thing. Or so he thought. A couple of months after his fifteenth birthday, Lucien was in a shopping centre on a job when the lift he was in broke down and the lights went out. He was only nervous to start with but as the seconds passed he got more and more scared, could feel his suppressed emotions slipping through before like a dam his hold over them burst. One of the other passengers screamed. They say fear drives people to do things they would never otherwise consider and with the weight of fear that the woman felt, accidentally amplified by Lucien's own, she took a swing at the closest passenger to her.
By the time they were rescued Lucien was the only one conscious, curled up into a ball in the corner of the lift as the four other people in the lift seemed to have beat each other to a bloody mess. It would be this event that lead to more people learning of Lucien's ability and the gang washed their hands of Lucien - although were unwilling to do anything to him while more eyes were focused on the teen.
Now that it was revealed that he wasn't a "normie" he could feel eyes upon him everywhere he went, silently judging even as the weight of their hate pressed against him. While he still occasionally smoke and drank, this new feeling of hatred pushed Lucien to do something he hadn't ever considered he would. His blades, at one point just used for self-defense, became used for self-harm as well and over the next few months several new scars appeared along his arms with the pain helping to focus him and take his mind off of the emotions of the normies.
And then, a month before his sixteenth birthday he found a letter his doorstep and with a quick weighing of his choices he gratefully accepted the invitation to the academy. Perhaps here things might be different.
"He seems overly... Sensitive."
Kosei most often seems to be a happy and confident person, something which Lucien would have no problem with were it not for the fact that one wrong comment would likely send Kosei off upset, and Lucien isn't exactly a good judge of what sort of comments would do that. Other than that Lucien doesn't have any problem with him, though it wouldn't be a surprise if Lucien really does cause Kosei to cry at some point.
"...He seems calm, at least, compared to nearly everyone else."
The way Alfred seems to stay level-headed in almost any situation is something that Lucien, well not likes but he doesn't dislike it. While most people are a party of emotions ready to give him a headache, Alfred's attitude means that while Lucien can still feel the other's emotions, they aren't jumping out at him like most others. Lucien can tolerate Alfred, but that is as far as it goes, he has no desire to make friends.
"No. I am not talking about them."
Nova is... Well, probably the person Lucien dislikes the most out of everyone he's met. If the average person is a party of emotions then Nova is an entire one-person-carnival, likely with about every sort of attraction possible. Nova feels everything in rapid succession and sometimes several contradictory emotions at the same time. If some people can give Lucien a headache, Nova will give him a migraine. And so Lucien avoids Nova wherever possible, now if only he could get them to stop showing up everywhere.
"If nothing else, I know to keep my distance here."
Lucien isn't the sort of person to like or dislike anyone unless their emotions are overwhelming enough to force him to retreat. Still, Taikan's overabundance of negative emotions is enough to make Lucien feel like he is drowning at times. The other seems to hate everything around him, and Lucien has decided that staying out of his way is likely the best course of action, for now.
"...Just... Tone it down would you?"
Lucien doesn't tend to protest much about another person's emotions, they usually can't help what they're feeling after all. But honestly, Keiji's are disturbing to him. Why would anyone want to feel that way at the sight of a girl? Lucien tends to stay away from Keiji when possible, if only to stop the other's emotions from being him feel dirty. Ugh...
"As long as he doesn't get all emotional around me."
While some people might find the fact that Abel wears his emotions on his sleeve endearing, Lucien finds it odd. With his own lack of emotions (or rather the fact that they're buried) he honestly finds anyone who is overly emotional rather annoying. Lucien will tolerate Abel as long as he keeps his distance. And, well, deceit is an emotion he can sense, so it's unlikely that Abel will be able to lie to him.
"He's an odd character."
Elias keeps his distance, which is something that Lucien very much appreciates. Although his manners and the respect he shows everyone is something that Lucien can tell is genuine, there is something lingering within the older student that is enough for Lucien to give him as much of a wide berth as he does Taikan or Nova. That Elias seems to enjoy being around Nova is perhaps another reason for that too.
"She's different, yet she seems somewhat like me."
It is unlikely that Lucien will ever become closer than polite acquaintances with Nao and he's perfectly fine with that. There is simply too of their personalities in common for them to be able to become friends. She seems to hold herself mostly at a distance from others, though she will at least attempt to be more polite to them than he would, and she would likely be more successful in making friends than Lucien as well. She seems to value her privacy though, and Lucien will respect that, and stay as far away from her emotions as possible. It's not as if he enjoys his ability after all.
"She keeps the little... Crazy one away, for that reason I like her."
Natalia is perhaps the only person that Lucien will admit to liking, though he also says that it is because she keeps Nova away from him. She is also slightly more level-headed than some of the other students and so as long as the "one-person-carnival" isn't around then he could probably tolerate her presence more so than anyone else.
"She always seems to only be half here."
As attuned to the feelings of those around him as he is (no matter how much he might wish that wasn't the case) Lucien can sense something is off with Shizuka. While the depression she feels tends to linger around her like a cloud, there is always a part of her emotions that he either can't understand, or is missing entirely, like someone tore something away from her. Still, she avoids him, so he will stay away from her too.
"Just, stay away from me."
Lucien senses a lot of bitterness from Kylie, especially when she looks at people interacting happily together. She seems guarded and if he were the sort of person to care he might try to find out why. Of course, he doesn't care and her temperament is enough to see him keep his distance from her.
"Yet another person to stay away from."
As is probably evident, Lucien stays away from his classmate. Chiharu is independent, which lessens the chance of her ever turning to him for anything, but Lucien will avoid her anyways. She, like nearly everyone else, provides a headache just from being in the same room as him. Her stubborn refusal of help means that she is perhaps more tolerable than if she had accepted the help, less emotions in one place and all.
