Bryant Matthews

It wasn't until half time that Bryant got the chance to look up into the stands. The whole first part of the game had been such a fight. He had grass stains all over his pants. The other team's defense was stronger than they were and full of bigger players that towered over their own. Bryant's offense was having trouble shaking the line and getting into open enough space for him to pass the ball that he was being forced to run most of the plays himself. He was out of breath, sweaty, and there was dirt down one side of his face from being tripped as he dove into the endzone at the end of the second quarter.

He was grateful when the referee blew the whistle, calling all players back to their sides of the field. Bryant jogged over, took his helmet off, and immediately dumped a cup of water over his head. The salty taste of sweat mixed with the water as he licked his lips, letting the cool relief run down his face.

The coach was speaking to the defensive players a few yards away as they would be first out on the field after halftime. They were ahead 21-14 but there was still half a game to go and so much could change. The screams of the crowd were starting to die down a bit as the band walked onto the field for the show. It was then that his mind got to take enough of a break from the game that the drama of the past week began to sink back into his head.

Suddenly he found himself turning around, sweaty strands of hair obstructing his vision slightly. His eyes were running back and forth along the lines of students up and down the bleachers. He wasn't sure why he was looking as he knew she wouldn't be there, but something made him keep searching. Then he saw her. His eyebrows shot up at the shock of the fact that she was there. She looked sad and a pang hit his chest and he suddenly felt it was harder to breathe than it had been when he had first left the field.

He knew he should say something. Explain. But he didn't know what he'd say. Suddenly someone slapped their hand down on his shoulder pad and spoke. "You haven't talked to her at all this week, have you?" It was Saunders. Bryant didn't answer, giving his teammate all the answer he needed. "She and I usually run in somewhat of the same circle and I've hardly seen her since the party. She's been acting like a hermit. You should say something, dude. Especially if it meant someting to you." For all the asshole that he could be, he could be equally as understanding and wise.

Saunders was right and Bryant knew it. He nodded as his friend walked away, leaving him to his thoughts. He looked back up at Meg, trying to catch her eye. When he did, he took a deep breath, and waved for her to come down the fence that seperate the stands from the field. It was time to talk.
