It would be great to say that Ululani turned her life around after that, but it would just not be realistic. Ululani had grown up without parents and without a home, in a life where stealing and deceiving was the only way to survive; a quiet life in a village just didn't seem like a reasonable path for one to take. She left the Therayan Kingdom and traveled across many terrains. For once, her guiding instincts didn't work. She didn't know where she was going -or where she wanted to go- because she didn't know anything outside of Therayan, so her powers were useless. She just knew she needed to get away from the bandits.
She ended up in the Yolkenstein Kingdom, a peaceful land ruled by elves. There weren't many will-o'-the-wisp there and she soon found out that her species was near extinction from all of the raids on their villages by rogue bands. She lived there for several years, stealing to barely get by, often getting in trouble but always able to slip away or strike a bargain. One day, she saw a carriage going through the forest and, not realizing that it was a royal carriage, tried to steal from it and ended up killing two guards. Captured, she was sentenced to one hundred years in prison. She had been planning her escape when the Elven King approached her and offered her a tempting deal.
Despite living with many at a time, Ululani craves a sense of space. She hates touching or being in proximity to others. And, since there is little for her to share or to talk about with others, she keeps to herself, interested in listening only if it serves a need for her. With that said, she often tends to think short-term, to live day by day, and can often act in irrational ways, not truly understanding how acting with honesty and integrity could help improve her life.
She has always lived with a false sense of safety and, since there is nothing else for her to hold on to, she will do whatever is needed to preserve it. To make things worse, she is now holding on to the false sense of freedom that she is desperate to get back. Ululani refused to be exploited for her powers ever again, but with very weak morals and in a very desperate state, she agrees. Ululani hopes to be able to escape at the first chance she sees.
Bartolomeu began to volunteer wherever and whenever he could, even taking a gap year before college in order to volunteer abroad. Unlike most, he didn't do it to fill a resume. He really thought he could make a difference, but it began to take over his life. Despite helping many people and creating very close bonds with some of them, Bartolomeu looked at the grand scheme of things and felt like all of his world was in vain. His mental state began to deteriorate and he would often find himself breaking down after shifts in the charities and organizations where he volunteered. It was something he couldn't explain if asked, but he began to be consumed by negative news and became hypersensitive to any negative thing or conflict he heard about.
Seeing this change, those around him began to suggest that he sought help; some simply told him to stop crying about everything. Unable to cope, Bartolomeu stopped volunteering and shut himself off from the world. He had gone from an exemplary student and sociable person to someone who could barely sit through dinner at the table. He was trying to save himself but refused to let anyone else help him. After some time, he turned his full attention to his education, family, and parties; he thought that distancing himself from the negatives of the world was the best way to deal with his problem. He has been like this for some time now, but there is still a void within him that he can't fill with education or parties. He just isn't meant to stand idly by as people around him struggle.
These decisions don't necessarily make Bartolomeu a bad person. He is still the kind to open the door for others, to take care of his loved ones when they are sick, and to accompany you in long, sleepless nights. It's just difficult for him to balance emotions and easy for him to lose his way. Bartolomeu is aware of some of his faults and, while it may surprise many, he is a devout Catholic. For him, it has been the first step to finding personal strength and self-love. There is still a long way for him to go and, perhaps, many bad decisions left for him to make before he can learn how to be a balanced person.
The journey that lies ahead for him in Vhaltar will not be easy for him. Filled with self-doubt, Bartolomeu will have to learn how to trust himself and allow those around him to help him if he wants to be strong enough to defeat the Queen.
