Introduction
About the time of the first Ice Age, all organisms had bonds. Bonds like no other. These bonds enabled them to share bodies, souls and minds. As time wore on, the shared spirits were separated and humans evolved. The humans were so devastated at this that they did not tell their children of the separation. Such stories would have only made the children long for what their parents had. So humans forgot how to bond again and understand the cultures of the animals and eventually grew to disrespect them. But the animals never wanted to forget the bonds and so handed down the ability to their children.
Around 400BC, a rebel tribe of domesticated animals in Europe decided to take up the ancient ways of their ancestors. After being beaten and forced to hard labour with not even a shelter for a reward, they converged souls with their masters. At this, the humans were notified of their own treachery and asked the animals to conjoin their beings into one, permanently, so they may never go back to their old ways. The animals agreed and from then on, the tribe called themselves Animalia in tribute to the animals who had convinced them to Change.
After this, many other tribes and animals followed the Animalia’s example. Eventually, even wild animals did this; reflecting on the people what had happened to the Animalia tribe. Soon after, a new race formed. They named themselves after the now-famous tribe - Animalia.
Generations of Animalia flourished and the race was powerful and spread around the world. They shifted back and forth, from animal to human, as they were fifty percent of each. Unfortunately, not all humans had become Animalia. In fact, half the human population had not given their consent to adjoin with the creatures they shared their earth with and so became hardened and went on to live as only humans would – disrespecting the animals and Animalia that lived around them.
In the late middle ages, after the plague, European Animalia were banished from their homes because the humans thought they had carried the plague into Europe.
This was a blow to the whole race as it led to humans believing that the Animalia were out to get them for their treachery. So they attempted to kill a great deal of the remaining Animalia. Luckily, many escaped and fled to foreign regions where they would be accepted. They rarely bred with humans; mostly other Animalia or real animals (it really didn’t make any difference); and soon the animal gene percentage grew from fifty percent to seventy-five percent.
Eventually, Animalia became a thing of the past. The humans forgot and no longer worried. So the Animalia decided to move back to human populated areas and lived among the people, under the guise of humans; rarely shifting unless they were in complete private. It was uncomfortable to hide their Animalia for too long.
Every now and again, the Animalia would grow restless with lying low and show themselves to the humans shifted half-way or more, often by accident. This was where many fairy tales came from – people’s encounters with Animalia. These tales formed dangerous rumours and the Animalia had to lie low even more.
Around the mid-1800’s, an alliance was formed with Animalia all around the world. The alliance was called the Kingdom Animalia. Very few humans knew of this alliance and those who did were sworn to secrecy.
In the late 1920’s, The Kingdom Animalia formed an institution around Graystokes protected area (the Animalia bought the land so that it would be protected) in British Columbia for Animalia children who wished for an education. “The Animalia Institute”, as it was called - or “the Institute” in short - provided teachings on survival and a regular education, as well. The best part was that it was completely free of tuition. Money was not a problem for Animalia.
Sometimes humans were careless and created offspring with an Animalia without realizing the race. When their children began to shift uncontrollably, the couples separated and the children were left on the streets, put in orphanages, or brought directly to the Institute; which gladly welcomed all orphaned and shunned Animalia.
The principal in 1920 was one Mr. Grayson Poland. He and his family took charge of running the Institute for the Kingdom Animalia.
The Poland’s Animalia were bears. The genes ranged in variety of many cross-breeding among other bear Animalia.
It was Grayson Poland who devised the idea of grades in the Institute. The juniors were grades one through seven and the seniors were grades eight through twelve. To become a senior, the juniors had to pass a series of tests specialized to fit the environment native to each individual’s Animalia. These were both in survival and in education.
Each grade had its own colour of bandana and was expected to wear them as uniform at all times - even outside of school hours. On the bandanas was a circular symbol, representing the breed or classification of animal each student was.
Even though the Institute was well hidden and had a great many acres of land, the inhabitants of the Institute were kept inside the walls at all times for fear of Animalia becoming discovered again; for the humans had only their legends and fairy tales to remind them of Animalia, and were sure to put kill any who showed themselves.
Occasionally, the inhabitants of the Institute were brought for an outing - if they had enough self control that is.
For lodging, each student had a room where he or she would sleep, eat breakfast, study, share with a roommate and generally live for their whole young lives at the Institute. Unless they were moved; but that rarely happened.

I patted him on the back, and started walking off in the direction of the forest. Maybe running a training course would get me in the mood for studying...
