Scout grinned at him. Now that she'd seen his reaction, she was starting to believe that they'd made the right decision. "You know, Jesse, most guys love being outnumbered by girls," she said, winking at him and grinning. "Well, if you're not going to have anything, Laurel, let's get back on the road. I want to get as far away from the goddamn town as possible," she said. She wondered what the reaction would be when they discovered that she was gone. They'd probably be glad to have her out from under their feet. Her father would be glad to have her gone- although maybe he'd miss his verbal punching bag. Her mother wouldn't even miss her. They probably wouldn't even tell her brother, so he wouldn't notice. And either way, he wouldn't miss her. Nobody would.
She realised that her grin had slipped from her face as she rooted in her purse to get the money together, and quickly forced it back on her face. The others couldn't know. They'd pity her, and she didn't want that.

He didn't recognise the number, so was cautious as he answered it.
"Hello?"
"Josh, it's me."
His brother. Of all people.
"I thought it wasn't safe to call me."
"Happy new year to you too."
"Unless you're calling to tell me that I can go home, I wouldn't say it's particularly happy."
"It's still not safe."
"No shit, Sherlock."
"I'm just calling to tell you to be more careful than ever. I think... I think they might have an idea of where you are."
Josh froze, stunned into silence. How? He'd been so careful. Only ever giving fake names, never giving any ID, avoiding anywhere that did require ID... and yet they'd found him. Shit. Was it a bad idea to go with the others, then? Or was it a really good idea?
"Josh, you still there?"
"Yeah. How the fuck did they find me?"
"I don't know, man. Just be careful, okay? And you never heard from me. Don't even get in contact with mom and dad."
"Alright. Bye," he said, hanging up and running his hands through his hair. By the sounds of things, staying moving was the best idea. He fucking hated his brother sometimes.
