He had been marking ruins for further investigation, when there was suddenly a reflection in the invisible light sent out to search for spirits like him. Actually, it didn't seem so much a reflection as something that gathered the radiance from his 'torch' and enhanced it with ambient remnants. His meagre search-light became a lazy beam of light through the branches, next to the harsh light of the unfiltered mid-day sun.
Spirits en masse. And even visible to the naked eye. The concentration was obviously formiddable. Quite a spectale. He regarded their uniform control of the body they had no doubt created themselves to exact their vengeance upon the world. In all likelihood, they were spirits of local deceased and they wanted some payback for what had been wrought here. That, or these spirits were part of the problem. Or, they could have been summoned to stand guard and let the dead rest in peace. If that was the case, better that they were disposed of, before he set about to plunder the ruins. There were countless other reasons for their presence and their anger, and he stood impassively at the very shoreline, running through his speculations, while the drama played out in front of him.
An elf appeared. There was little doubt. Youthful looks, skills well beyond what appearances led to believe. Great marksmanship and natural proficiency with bows. Enchanted arrows and lastly, secret passages in trees.
The elf disrupted the spirits' control of the conglomerate beast with a shot from a golden bow and arrow. The spirits disappeared and their earth beast fell apart. That was unsettling. Arrows like that shouldn't be carelessly distributed to anyone but those like... well, to be honst, they shouldn't be in the hands of anyone, but him. Clearly, something had to be worked out in order to acheive that goal, but for now, both arrow and shooter were out of range, climbing into a tree with the Exulum and vanishing. It was likely there was a hidden city of elves at the other end of that passage. More probable, than not, at any rate.
Arkana disappeared into the tree as well and that was a minor inconvenience. It would have been preferable to have someone around who could be trusted to stand guard and actually care about his fate, while he was searching the ruins for useful trinkets. After all, what was it he did these days, if not plunder ruins and use what he found to his own end?
He looked at his hands and sighed mentally at the broken wrist. Perhapds there was a useful corpse in the ruins?
Penny nodded an impassive farewell at the sailors and their dead comrades. Though they were the obvious choice, it was clear that the still living sailors would object to an annoying degree, if he wandered off in the skin of one of their friends. As he moved further ashore, he noticed the other corpses. The ones less charred, who had obviously been killed by the disharmonous roar of the earth beast. Now, if one of them had not been completely pulverized within, it would serve for now. He began going over the bodies, searching for ones with whole bones and intact muscles. Once he had found one, he dragged it aside and went over the others once more to find a second choice, and a third...
