Long ago, there was the shadow emperor who usurped half of the federation, but after a crushing defeat, the nearly immortal emperor was banished to a planet in an uncharted region of the galaxy. Along with his followers, he spend over a millenium on the planet. Due to that long time, it is unknown if anyone of them was still alive. But after an emergency landing of a ship on the planet, someone took out its crew and left the planet with the ship. The federation suspects the remainder of the banished. Now the galaxy is in search of a group that could destroy the federation. But their current identities are unknown.

Proteus Galaxy: A vast galaxy of multiple hundred thousand stars spanning about 150,000 lightyears. Most transport possibilities nowadays allow getting from one end to another without accelerated time. Making it possible to travel thousands of lightyears without family dying off on a planet during the travel time.

The Federation: The Federation is an alliance of nearly two thousand systems and is the biggest power in the galaxy. They meet on a planet in a system in the center of the federation to discuss issues.

The Shadow Empire: Over 1000 years ago, the shadow empire was the biggest threat to the galaxy. But after the banishment of the shadow emperor and his followers as well as the dissolution of the empire, the galaxy was back at peace. But now the federation fears that the empire may rise again, after convicts have escaped the planet they were banished to. The empire wasn't a single species but a multi-species nation. The ruler also varied by race. It was rather a master-student hierarchy than by family. Usually the most worthy student was to become the next emperor. After the war however, most of the empire planets became slave planets or in the case of Mortis the populace was subject to genocide and enslavement, ultimately leaving the planet uninhabited by sentient lifeforms.

Locations:

Planets:

-Darus, home of the Darusians. The planet used to be bustling with Darusians but a plague and war have decimated the population down to about 50 million. It is mostly a tropical landscape and climate with breathable air for most species.

-Ignaz, the home of the Ignazos. Cold in the northern and southern areas. The equator is temperate with forests while the rest is barren.

-Bashor, a desert planet. No sentient life is home to it. However colonies of mixed species exist on it.

-Pingas, the home of the Pingasiseses. Mostly desert, however temperate climate.

-Nishun, Nishuni home. 90% ocean, 10% land. Tropical and forested.

Species examples:

Ignazos: Humanoid beings with bright hair, eye color and tanned skin. They are vegetarians.

Pingasiseses: Are reptilian. They resemble crocodiles walking on two legs. They eat bugs and smaller creatures.

Nishuni: While mostly humanoid in appearance, their skin is actually rather leathery and their hands and feet show amphibean traits. They are mostly pescestarians.

Teran: What we call human.

All species within the federation are on similar levels of technology. Due to largely varying cultures, no species has a uniform culture.

Spaceships: While most spaceships have similar architecture, some may be unique.

There are two kinds of standard ship builds: Teran and Ignazo. Teran ships tend to be long and geometrical such as flying elongated pyramids or cylinders. They are usually equipped with ballistic weapons like railguns and missiles. Ignozo ships however can range from a clunky flying scrapyard to a rocket powered luxury skyscraper. Ignazo ships normally utilize energy weapons.

Unique ships also exist. The standard transport ship or frigate is about 100 meters in length and has a crew of twenty. The other end of the spectrum are ships that are kilometers long and have over ten thousand crew members. The largest ships are normally federation military ships or defunct empire ships.


Weaponry:

Teran weapons mostly consist of ballistic handguns, conventional blades and explosives.

Nishuni, Ignazo and Pingasi weapons are mostly impulse weapons, electron stun grenades and energy blades.

Darusian weapons are often a mix of various cultures weapons, laser swords, claw gloves and capture gear (such as nets and hooks).



A brief timeline:

16000 years ago, the first civilization that found interstellar travel was the Nishuni. With this ability they colonized neighboring systems.

14000 years ago, the number of civilization capable of interstellar travel were over fourty. It was also the start of the shadow dynasty on the planet Mortis.

9000 years ago, the Federation was formed with about sixty founding member states. The shadow empire has started its conquest of neighboring systems.

7000 years ago, a supernova destroys the Galana system and its inhabitants. Remnant colonies of the Galana are found in other systems. The Federation has over two hundred members now. The shadow empire encompasses thirty systems now.

4000 years ago, the Federation is now at 450 members and takes up about 3% of the galaxy. The shadow empire begins its second major conquest. First conflicts between the Federation and the Empire occur.

2500 years ago, the Federation with 720 members makes up a tenth of the galaxy. The shadow empire nears equal size. The first war between the Federation and the Shadow empire lasts fourty years and is ended in a ceasefire.

1100 years ago, the Federation reaches 1000 members and makes up a quarter of the galaxy. The equally big empire declares war on the Federation.

1000 years ago, though losing, the Federation manages to change the direction of the war and defeats the empire during the battle of Mortis. After three unsuccessful execution attempts, the Federation banishes the shadow emperor and his followers to a distant planet on the end of the galaxy with no possibility to escape the planet by ship.

Just a week ago, the banished managed to overwhelm the crew of a prisoner ship that emergency landed near their homestead. The guardians first notice the escape days after the ship left the system when the bodies of the crew are found on the planet.
