When Skyler met James for the first time, they were only seven years young. Skyler was being teased and having her hair pulled by a couple of her male classmates when James appeared out of nowhere. The boys stopped pulling Skyler's hair and turned their attention to James. After a few shouts and a shove, the boys were running away, leaving Skyler and James alone and an odd silence hanging in the air. After a moment or two, James finally spoke. "It's Skyler, right? Are you okay?" he had asked her. Skyler stayed quiet, staring down at her hands and fidgeting with her fingers. "Yes. I'm fine.." Skyler replied, finally looking up at the boy. Now she realized why the boys who had been terrorizing her had run away so swiftly. Her knight in shining armor had been James Reynolds, who was tallest boy in class and looked like he belonged in third grade, not first. They each looked up at the same time when the last bell rang, signaling that school was over and it was time to go home. James looked back at her and smiled. "Can I walk you home?"
For years after they met, Skyler and James became inseparable. They were always at one or the others house, playing games, watching television or swimming in Skyler's pool for several hours a day during summer. They grew closer over the years and they each developed an innocent crush on the other. One day, during the summer when they were both twelve and were at a park near James' house. They were sitting next to each other on the swing set, Skyler's feet were barely grazing the tan bark on the ground and James' were flat on the ground. Without warning, James began swinging left and right until his seat bumped into Skyler's, forcing her to let out a small yelp, which she then covered up with a loud laugh. She reached out and clutched the chain to James' seat and pulled on it, so they were swinging left and right in unison. Before they knew what was happening, they were sharing a meaningful and innocent kiss. For both it had been their first kiss and it was a kiss that neither of them would ever forget. Later that night when Skyler returned home, her parents sat her down and informed her that they had to move to Oregon for her fathers job. This news devastated both Skyler and James. Within three weeks, all of her stuff was packed up and it was time for her to leave. James hadn't said much to her on the day she left, just hugged her, promised he would keep in touch and said goodbye. Angered by the way James had acted the day she left, Skyler made little effort to keep contact with him and he seemed to catch on after a while. After a month or two, all phone calls, emails, letters had stopped completely and both tried to move on with their lives.

After finally getting settled in Oregon, Skyler became interested in painting and discovered she was an incredibly talented artist. She spent her entire high school career known as the quiet artsy girl, whose only friends were her paintbrushes and a blank piece of canvas. Though she had the occasional boyfriend here and there, Skyler never found anyone that really sparked her interest. Most of her paintings were of the lush Oregon forests, or of animals that she liked. Sometimes she would find herself painting pictures of James, of what he might look like now. Sometimes she would even paint herself next to him or paint the scene of her first kiss with him. Her sketch book was filled with charcoal pencil sketches of him and her that she would do whenever she was bored or didn't know what to paint next.
After spending her freshmen year at a local college in Oregon, Skyler decided she didn't want to stay there any longer, she needed to get away from her parents. Soon after, she was accepted to the University of Oklahoma with a full ride scholarship. School has just started and Skyler is settled in to her room, which she thankfully has all to herself. As her first class at her new school approaches, she sits in her room with her charcoal stained fingers and sketchbook in hand, for some reason still thinking of him.

James was very upset for a long time after Skyler left, he did not understand how she could just leave him here. He did not fully understand that she didn't have a choice and was holding somewhat of a grudge. He made it onto his first football team in high school and focused all of his energy on the sport, becoming the best in the district and later the state. James made the All-American team for the state of Oklahoma and yet he still found himself thinking of her, where she was and what she was doing. With his parents support and encouragement James received a full ride scholarship to the University of Oklahoma with the dream of one day making it to the National Football League. It did not take long for James to make friends at the University, as a handsome star athlete it seemed that a lot of people wanted to meet him and make friends.
With the football season closing in he felt that he should be lucky to have all that he has, but even after all of this time he felt as if something was missing from his life. James wondered what she was doing, he wondered where she was and why she never contacting him. James had just received news from his coach that he was going to be the starter once again this year, he picked up his uniform from the coaches office and looked at it. Number Fourteen, her favorite number, he couldn't explain why he kept using it all of these years, but he didn't feel right without it.

After a lunch at a local place called Murphy's James got back into his car for his next class, it was on the northeast side of the campus but not technically on campus. It took about a five minute drive to arrive at his destination, his Technology class was one of his least favorite classes but his options were a bit limited at the time and it was the only one he could see himself tolerated for an entire semester. He arrived about fifteen minutes before class was going to start and decided that he would sit on the front steps and finish his orange juice before heading inside to see what boring class Professor Richardson had set up for today. Technology would be fun but the teacher was just so boring, he had one of those monotone voice much like Ben Stein.
After a while, Skyler stopped sketching and headed to her last two classes, Art History and a Drawing/Painting intro class that was part of her requirements. Bryan was in both of those classes and Skyler was kind of glad, at least she had one friend.
Once her last class was over, Skyler was starving. She hadn't eaten that morning, but she wasn't in the mood for crappy cafeteria food. She mentioned this to Bryan, and he told her about a great bar and grill called Murphy's that was within walking distance from campus. She asked Bryan if he wanted to go with her, but he declined. They said goodbye again and agreed to go for lunch after one of their classes next week. Skyler started walking in the direction Bryan pointed her in, and within five minutes she was opening the doors to Murphy's.

James entered the bar and grill that he had become so familiar with, David was with him but they instantly seperated as David went straight to the bar and James went to sit at one of the tables. He was hungry even though he had eaten earlier today, during football practice he had worked up quite an appetite. The waitress came by and already knew that James wanted, he nodded and smiled at she walked away. James looked up to one of the many televisions and watched the football game that was on tv, he always came to this place when he wanted to be by himself and have a good mean at the same time. David always came here to get drunk but James was not a big drinker, he never had been. James looked to the front door in time to see Skyler enter, he thought he would see her friend with her but he was glad to be wrong. He did not make an effort to call her over, he was not even sure that she knew he was here.
Once inside, Skyler took a look around and then decided to head over to the bar. She wasn't much of a drinker, but decided to order a beer, it wasn't like she'd be driving anywhere anyways. The bartender, who winked at her when she ordered, handed her the glass and she paid him. Turning her back on the bar, Skyler took a sip from the glass and scanned the tables, until her eyes rested on James and another guy. Skyler didn't exactly want to see James, but she didn't want to hang around the bar, drinking by herself and be approached by every drunk guy in the entire place. The boy sitting next to James caught her looking at them, leaving her little choice but to go over to their table. "Hi Ji--James." she said, almost forgetting that he told her not to call him Jimmy, "Mind if I join you two?"
