The Glass Cliffs Wall

Introduction

The Divide
The wall in Glass Cliffs doesn't just protect the city from outsiders. It also divides the people into two sides, the North Falls and the South Falls. The North Falls is about 2/5 of the city's geographical area while the South Falls takes up the rest, but the populations are much closer to half and half. The surrounding wall was begun in 1805 when Aleksander Baranov's Russian expedition team split in two, half staying in the Glass Cliffs of Alaska and half, including Baranov, continuing down to Northern California. The inner wall began construction in 1810

The Attacks
In order to settle the area, the Russians decided to clear the area of its native population. Many natives of the Aleut Tribe were forced to relocate, but even more succumbed to the unfamiliar diseases that the foreigners carried with them. The tribe's mystic swore a cosmic vengeance from the ancestors of all those wronged by the Russians that would divide the crew. Although the exact date is currently unknown, some time between the construction of the outer wall and the inner wall, a wolf attack ravaged much of the expedition crew. Half of the approximately 100 remaining men fell terribly ill with high fevers, hallucinations, and terrible bone-deep body aches. The first full moon found those who had gotten sick turning into wolves. No one was killed, and most wolves spent their first nights howling in pain, but the damage was done. The new shifters were banished to a much smaller part of the settlement, and construction was begun soon after.

When the Russians sent another shipment of settlers, this one including women and children, another wolf attack occurred, once again evening the ratio of shifters to humans.

The Powers
While first generation shifters are unable to control their transformations, all those born into the power can transform at will. They do feel a strong pull to the moon, but they can resist even the full moon unless greatly weakened somehow. Silver can be deadly, and it burns them when they touch it. Shifting does not transfer through bite, unless one is bitten by an enchanted wolf. Life expectancy for a shifter is only ten years longer than that of humans. Shifters are able to "mark" chosen mates, which is a willful and consensual act between two shifters (usually; although it is as of yet untested, a human is able to accept a mark from a shifter and reciprocate) that bonds them until one or both of their deaths. If one dies significantly before the other, they are able to mark again.

While there is not much precedence of disproportionate violence by shifters against humans, the human population found themselves uncomfortable with the uneven power the shifters had over them. In an effort the level the field, the humans of Glass Cliffs began learning combat magic. Eventually, they began incorporating magic into their everyday lives. Families tend to keep to one type of magic (earth, fire, spirit, air, or water) and keep their children around similar families. Although the reasoning behind keeping the name "humans" for themselves is outdated, the trend still exists. Radically progressive groups have begun to use "mages" to describe themselves as a way of denouncing the original use of "humans" to symbolize their purity and untainted blood. Most people, however, just call them humans, and not even shifters really have a problem with it anymore.

Wealthy human families usually incorporate a lot of silver into their outfits. Silver is much more popular than any other metal for humans, and they wear it in any way they can.

The wealthy families on both sides of the wall live toward the edges of town, and the poorest families live right next to it. Most people in the city are of either Russian or Inuit descent, but there are a few families that came later on.
