The Exegian Coalition of Free Planets

"Our people are exiles, refugees--those that were left behind, discarded by civilization, like refuse. We are the forgotten and the lost. Our voices will be heard once again."--Primary of Defense, Adrian Danvers

a character in “Ascendancy: A Candle in the Dark”, as played by Cypher

Description

Nation Name:
The Exegian Coalition of Free Planets, or just the Exegian Coalition.

Nation Population:
Due to the recent establishment of the Coalition and poor record-keeping combined with the natural hazards of establishing a foothold in a heretofore-unsettled region of space, plus the constant ebb and flow of new citizens joining and deserting, there is no accurate projection of the Coalition's population. Conservative estimates put the population at anywhere between four and five million people.

Nation Size:
At the moment, the Coalition is in possession of one star system. This is likely to change at some point in the future.

Government:
The Coalition doesn't have a formalized system of government at the present moment due to the relatively recent date of its formation. Its primary governing body for the moment, therefore, is called the Board of Primaries. The Board of Primaries are the first four settlers of the system, who established settlements on the primary planet. They, along with two chosen Secondaries each, control the four major facets of Coalition life; Defense, Settlement, Commerce and Research.

The Primary of Defense deals in military and policing issues--state security, border control, self defense, and (when necessary) offensive maneuvers. The Primary of Defense is also the chief diplomat of the Coalition, and the leader of the Coalition's fledgeling Diplomatic Corps.

The Primary of Settlement's job is, obviously enough, to control and regulate the settlement and development of new colonies in the home system and beyond. This may seem relatively unimportant, but without proper regulation on the part of the Primary and his Colonization Bureau, the Coalition would spread too far too fast, overstep its boundaries and become weak. Through limitations established by the Primary, the Coalition remains both off the radar and under control.

The Primary of Commerce regulates the ebb and flow of goods brought into and out of Coalition territory; determines what supplies are in surplus and can be traded, and what supplies are in demand within the colony. It is also the job of the Primary of Commerce to make sure that the paper trail does not, at the moment, indicate the Coalition exists; he must dress all papers to look like imports, exports and vessels coming into the system are going to independent colonies and not the Coalition.

The Primary of Research does exactly what it says on the tin--researches new technology and equipment and tests it. Better agricultural vehicles, more efficient drive cores, more powerful weapons--civil or military, the Primary controls all of it.

Economic System:
The Coalition's economic system is somewhere between regulated capitalism and bartering. As there are at least two planets and a single small asteroid belt that are abundant in heavy metals necessary for ship's hulls and structures, their trade is almost entirely dependent upon the value of metal in the galactic market.

Culture:
Explain briefly the general culture of your nation. As a whole, what are its values and how happy are its people?

Important Characters:
Include a brief list of major characters with some description of them and their responsibilities. This list need not be exhaustive, in fact I have no doubt that every one of us will find occasion to add to it as time progresses. There is no need to fill out an entire character sheet for the application process, although you may find it useful to fill one out to keep on hand as your characters develop.

Important Locations:
Include a brief list of major locations within your empire. Be it a city, a planet, or an entire solar system, be sure to mention a few locals and some information about them. This list need not be exhaustive, in fact I have no doubt that every one of us will find occasion to add to it as time progresses.

Space Forces
Briefly provide basic information regarding the general status of your nation's military space fleet.

Space Vessels
Copy and post the following application for each vessel you wish to include in your military space forces. This list does not need to include non-combat vessels.

Name:
Size: On a scale of one to ten, where one is a strike craft (jet fighter) and 10 is over a kilometer in any one dimension.
Combat Role: Is this vessel a damage sink, a troop carrier, a ship-of-the-line, etc.
Defenses: Specify any specific armor or special shielding possessed by the vessel.
Weapons: List the ship's armament, and include brief weapon descriptions as needed.
Engines: What accelerations can your ship reach and how quickly can it maneuver. Keep in mind that accelerations in excess of 5 gs (about 50 m/s/s) will cause most humans to black out over a short period of time.
Other: Include any other miscellaneous information here.

Ground Forces
Briefly provide basic information regarding the general status of your nation's military ground forces.

History:
Briefly provide an account of the history of your nation. Feel free to not fill much in here, as whatever you write in this section may come back and limit your options later in the story. It is perfectly fine to flesh your history out during the story, rather than before--however a general idea of how your nation came about will no doubt be very important in guiding your hand as you write it.

So begins...
