Introduction
❝ We all make choices. But in the end, our choices make us
―Andrew Ryan❞
The year is 1958, rapture has begun to fall from a shining utopia into a condemned hell hole. Rapture has not collapsed within a day, but rather suffers from a long chain of events that will bring it into an irreversible civil war. Ryan had created Rapture, and thus, he determined the rules by which the city operated, leaving the rest of the population in relatively-impotent advisory positions or politically and economically marginalized. Nonetheless, a condition known as "confined environment psychosis" exists which has a tendency to create conflict in closed locations such as Rapture, and when combined with the hyper-competitive economic system of Rapture, violence was a logical progression. The single event that helped plant the seeds for Rapture's decline and collapse was when Ryan passed what has come to be referred to as "the one law." This single law prohibited any contact with the surface. But in doing so he created a demand for surface goods that could not legally be met, which led to Frank Fontaine, a small time fishery owner, operating a smuggling ring that filled that demand. In doing so, Fontaine gained considerable wealth, wealth that would be used to expand his commercial operations. Eventually, Ryan finally understood the threat to his city that Fontaine posed. He realized that he had missed the boat on the ADAM market, and lamented his rival's foresight. He felt the Great Chain pulling away from him. His effort to give it a tug resulted in Sullivan and other members of his security team investigating Fontaine and his crew of smugglers, even using torture and other harsh methods to gain the information he needed. Despite public protests, Ryan ordered that those convicted of smuggling would be subject to capital punishment, increasingly relying upon naked force to ensure his economic control. On September 12th 1958, Ryan's men ordered a final all-out attack on Fontaine and his remaining supporters. The event was immortalized the next morning in the Rapture Standard with the famous headline "Ryan takes down smuggling operation. Fontaine and thugs killed in fiery shootout!" Fontaine's death may have caused some who sensed the deteriorating state of civil society to breathe a sigh of relief, but peace would be short-lived for the people of Rapture and soon a much larger-scale conflict would come.
Alright, now you've got some context, i'll make things crystal clear. As you might have guessed, yes this is a bioshock based role-play, however our charming and favourite characters from the bioshock series will make little appearance other than from whispers or conversation. As for you? You are a citizen of rapture, an artist... a hulking big-daddy, a forsaken little sister, a parasite scavenging what you can as the city falls around you. This role play will be structured around the fall of rapture, the events leading up to the 1959 new years terrorist attacks and the bloody civil war between the "bloody king" Ryan, and the elusive 'Atlas'. You of course will have to chose a side eventually for survival, or perhaps you've been working for one of the factions all along...
The 'Roleplaying' itself will take form in interaction between role players with other role players and a GM, the GM being, myself. Your characters story during the fall of rapture will depend on the choices you make now, to side with Ryan, Atlas... or even an independant wanderer. As for the style, think dungeon crawler and survival role play combined with assignments/quests (depending on your allegiance) minus the dice. For more information on the roleplay style and what your signing yourself up for, Visit the OOC thread for an post by post example and information on factions.
