Description

Image Full Name: Harper Calloway Fields
Age: "I'm feeling twenty-twoooo~ See, it's funny because I am 22..."
Birthday: June 22
Living Situation: Currently living in a small apartment in Boston, MA. Originally from Manhattan, NYC.
Appearance: Harper hovers at 5'11 (and a half). He has dark brown, loosely curly hair that "cannot be tamed" (unless gratuitous amounts of hair gel are used) and naturally tanned skin that only gets darker the more it is exposed to the sun, with the exception of his nose, which, oddly enough, is the only part of his body that gets sunburned, which usually leads to him putting an obnoxious amount of sunscreen on said facial appendage. He has large eyes the color of the sea, switching between blue and green or a combination of both depending on the light and whatever color shirt he is wearing. He has a mouth that smiles easily, with playful dimples and eye crinkles that his sister jokes makes him look old, to which he always reply that they simply "add character". His face overall is very expressive, and he isn't afraid to exercise it, often folding and contorting his face into different expressions, sometimes out of pure boredom. His ears stick out from his face more so than most, and are even more prominent when he wiggles them, a feat he is particularly proud of, next to his whistling. Lately he has been trying out facial hair as a part of his image, though he still shaves regularly.

Due to a lifetime of swimming, his upper body is quite built, his shoulders broad. He has large palms, but his fingers are oddly slender, tapering at the fingertips, and his nails are rounded rather than square. His toes are also fairly long, and he has taken to using them as extra hands, opening doors, picking things up from the floor, and even dressing himself with their assistance. Also due to his swimming, Harper shaves his legs and arms, usually once a week. He once tried applying No-Shave November to his entire body, but realized by the end of it that swimming wasn't the same with all that hair, and from then on only participated with facial hair.

Harper usual dressing style is casual with just a hint of "prep", stemming from his well-to-do background. He still shops at Hollister and American Eagle when he can afford it, and almost always wears flip-flops unless there is more than an inch of snow on the ground, in which case he will consider wearing sneakers. He always wears a shark tooth necklace, and is often seen with a pair of sunglasses perched on top of his curly hair.

Personality: Harper is a loud, blunt, often obnoxious, sometimes funny, happy-go-lucky jokester of a guy (or at least he likes to think so). Typically people find him a bit of an asshole, due to his off-the-hand, typically insulting remarks, along with his tendency to speak before thinking, yet he still has a charismatic charm that helps keep him out of too much trouble. He has a penchant for puns and bad jokes, often finding them hilarious and liable to blurt them out whenever he finds opportunity to, regardless of whether he has anyone's approval or not. Whenever he finds a really good one, he finds himself unable to keep the pun or joke to himself and will share it with the world out loud. He is present-minded, having little regard for the future or what it may hold and instead lives in the moment, milking each minute for what it's worth. This has landed him in many sticky situations, often with the local police. He is good at improvising, lying, and telling stories (real and fake, and both with much exaggeration), and talks quickly and expressively, usually with his hands. He curses often, and has a tendency to make up curses, which may or may not always make sense.

Harper doesn't like being told what to do, which has often been problematic in the job department. He enjoys making decisions for himself, good and bad, regardless of the consequences. He is impatient, hates waiting and is very efficiency-based, hating redundancies despite it being protocol. He's always had difficulty with writing and reading in particular, but school overall he found boring. He is a very tactile person, having made several mechanical animals with moving parts that double as music boxes without any prior training. While he has worked a lot with metal, lately he has been delving into wood, creating his own furniture out of scrap pieces he collects off the side of the road. However, much of what he makes he does for his own enjoyment, and hasn't been successful in selling any of his creations because he doesn't market himself. He has a love for motorbikes, often getting arrested for taking them out on joyrides. He also enjoys musicals, having gone to many when he still lived in NYC, and has many of the soundtracks memorized. He also enjoys pop-songs, and is a bit of a pop-culture junky himself. While he doesn't know how to play any musical instruments, he does have a good singing voice if he tries. His dancing isn't half-bad either. And, of course, he is a very strong swimmer, and takes a daily swim in the Boston Harbor every morning. He suffers from a crippling fear of heights, and as such has never traveled by plane, climbed a tree, or ridden any amusement park ride (except for carousels). He also doesn't do any sort of diving from more than 6 feet above the water.

Background: Harper is the oldest of two children born to two very affluent New Yorkers in the heart of Manhattan. His father is a lawyer and his mother inherited her father's business. Born into a socialite party, Harper learned manners and protocols at a very early age. He never had to worry about money, and was typically given whatever he wanted. His parents were rarely home, however, and he spent a large amount of time with his younger sister, Sadie, whom he adores to this day. His prowess for swimming and tinkering was evident ever since he was very young, however his father took the former more seriously and paid for a personal coach in hopes that Harper would compete professionally, perhaps in the Olympics. Harper performed very well in competitive swimming, participating in every year of his schooling and placing well in Regional competitions. However, although his schoolwork was always average, in high school his grades dropped severely, something that his parents were both unhappy about, particularly his father, who punished Harper by refusing to allow him to participate in swimming that year. This only caused his grades to drop more, and after he was rejected by every college he applied to, his father threatened him with military school when he was 17.

Scared, Harper ran away that night and took a train to Boston. He didn't contact his parents for four years, only calling Sadie. He lived in an "unbelievably crappy" studio apartment with cheap rent for most of his time in Boston, only recently upgrading to a "slightly less crappy" single bedroom. His on and off job has been working as a Chinese Take-Out Bicycle Delivery boy (since he has no car), and even though his boss has fired him multiple times, he has also rehired him just as many times because Harper, despite the numerous times he has had to bail him out of jail and his terrible backtalking, is still his fastest delivery boy, even on a bicycle. In the past year, he reconnected with his parents on accident after Sadie purposely steered him towards them during one of her cello concerts. The relationship has still been very shaky, but he now calls them every now and then and will begrudgingly speak with them when Sadie forces him to. Right now he is in New York City for another one of Sadie's concerts.

So begins...

Allowing her gaze to flicker over to Skylar, the brunette gave off what seemed to be a soft smile. "I'm Lux. I was born in Cincinnati, but my family moved to Buffalo. I'm still in high school and I'm looking at going to college in New York City." She commented, sympathizing with the girl for trying to make a valiant effort on breaking the ice that seemed to have covered the warrior's table.

However, the idea of the food and the smell that lingered in the air was making Lux start to chew a little on the inside of her lip. She heard what was her own stomach growl before letting out a sigh. It was hard to tell how hungry she was until she fully realized it! And it was also the description of all the types of food here on Aires that made her hungrier just thinking about the similarities. Perhaps this place wasn't so bad once you got past the fact that it did not rely on technology like her world did.

Harper scoffed at Haru's words. "Please," he said, leaning back in his seat, hands behind his head. He had to fight the urge to put his feet on the table and compromised by propping one foot up against his other knee in the stereotypical '4' position men liked to sit in. "I haven't been 17 in 5 years." Besides, how strong could beer be? It wasn't like hard liquor.

He shrugged at Skylar's comment, "Hey, if I had run faster sooner, some other pearl-wearing sucker would be here instead of me. So, really, you guys are stuck with me because I wasn't more of an asshole."

He snorted at the introduction, and added at the end of Skylar's, "Yeah, she's trying to become a professional liar. Believe me, you don't need to go to school for that."

As more and more people introduced theirselves (mainly herselves) Harper realized that he was correct: most of these people still lived with their parents. Or were just starting college. Either way, all were younger than him.

"Sheesh," he said, "I can't believe the world is supposed to get saved by a bunch of teenagers."

Jason had been unusually quiet for himself, but these people wouldn't know that since he just met them. The place they were staying was way different than anything he'd ever seen, but, hey, this was a different world after all. It reminded him of a book series he read once. Wheel of Time or something like that? Eh, doesn't matter.

At the mention of food, Jason realized how hungry he actually was, and was eager enough to follow the others to the tavern. The smell of the food, and the descriptions Haru gave had his mouth watering... but for him, the beer was a definite no go. Being one of those people who quickly adapts and feels comfortable around new people, Jason didn't even notice the awkward atmosphere around the table until on of the girls, Skylar, she said, introduced herself, and he noticed the others uncomfortable expressions or postures. Two other girls, Lux and Autumn, followed up.

But, of course, that annoying guy... I think it's Harper or something? just had to make more stupid comments. He shook his head and sighed, a little annoyed. "Hey, lighten up, dude. Your attitude sucks. We're all stuck here whether you like it or not, so just deal with it. Like the adult you so proudly claim to be."

He turned towards the others and gave a small smile. "Jason Carter. Grew up in Music City, AKA, Nashville, Tennessee. Do to some... circumstances, I've been live'n on my own for the past two years. Came to New York to check out a scholarship opportunity, and luckily I'm able to stay with a family friend." He remembered the reason he'd gone out anyways and ended up at the park, turning a little red, "I, uh, kind'a got lost and ended up at Central Park, so, yeah, but kind'a glad I ended up there. This is all pretty interesting."

Autumn rolled her eyes at Harper’s remark. Was he trying to be a jerk? She made a mental note not to be bothered by anything he said. If anything, he was probably just trying to get a rise out of everyone. How long would he last like this? If he continued to be so rude, she couldn’t imagine him staying around very long.

Still, teenagers probably weren’t what Autumn would choose if she had a world to save. “I’m sure we’ll do fine.” She smiled hopefully, though she wasn’t quite sure if she believed her statement. She couldn’t even move when the cyclopean first attacked at the park. If that trend continued, she just knew she wouldn’t be alive for very long. If that was the case, she had to face her fears. Fast. The thought of having to fight those monstrosities left an unsettling pit in her stomach.

Harper raised his eyebrows at the southern kid's comment. "I am dealing with it," he said, and then grinned, "Right now I'm dealing with it by complaining. And in a few minutes I'll be dealing with it by eating, getting smashed, and hopefully getting laid, like the adult I am.

He leaned back some more, balancing on the two back legs of his chair and musing at the ceiling. "You know, they did some sort of study where if you complain and whine and bitch about all the bad stuff, it leaves your system and you end up more clear-headed on the inside."

He wasn't sure if this was true or not, but it sounded legitimate to him. "It's like burping," he explained further with a wave of his hand, "If you don't let it out, the gas inverts and you end up with the shits."

The southern kid introduced himself as Jason, and when he mentioned he was from Tennessee, Harper snapped his fingers and pointed in his direction with an excited "Called it!"

Harper grew more excited by the end of his intro, since he himself was involved in it. "Yeah, this guy asked me for directions," he said, "And, you know, I told him exactly where to go, but I guess he doesn't know his right from his left. You know, actually, it's hard to get lost in New York City, at least in the Manhattan part, because everything goes by numbers. Like, 32nd comes before 33rd and after 31st. It's great."

He snorted at Autumn's hopeful comment. "Yeah, I'm sure we'll do fine too, once we get our food and drinks," he said sarcastically, sitting forward with a heavy 'thud' from the chair, "But seriously, where's the food? Do we just order or do they bring it to us, or what?" He raised an eyebrow at Haru's direction.

Kyle was a little anxious about going to the tavern himself, but he didn't think he was the only one. Because Haru was going there for food, he hoped it was more like an old world pub than a bar, but what did Kyle know about old world pubs anyway? All he heard were stories.

The short blond had to take a step back at the entrance to the tavern and rubbed his head. All this noise reminded him of the shouting and arguing in that core place. He groaned at the memory, but eventually found his way to everyone else. There wasn't anywhere else for him to go except back to the inn, which would probably be too quiet and even lonely. He didn't really know any of these people, but he was more comfortable in a group than on his own in a strange place. Besides, he needed to get to know them -though he would be happier without Harper along- to do this save the world stuff and Haru did warn them they wouldn't have a lot of time. So he had to make the best of the time they would have.

When the redhead pulled out the map and started telling them about the area, Kyle leaned in to get a better look. It didn't do much good though, since it was upside down to him, so he just sat back again. He started at the threat though. The blond boy's seventeenth birthday was still months away, but Haru already ordered the drink. What could he do about it? He could probably order water later. Yes, that's what he would do.

While waiting for the drinks, several people started introducing themselves. The first one, a brown-haired girl called Skylar, caught his attention. She was studying in college and he was impressed. He didn't even know she was old enough to go to college. As for him, he didn't expect to get into college at all because his grades were bad and he had other issues. The idiot, Harper, of course had to belittle her about her major and Kyle wanted to punch him. He hated that jerk. Another guy, Jason, from Tennessee said something to Harper in a much nicer way then Kyle would have, and the shorter blond chuckled at that.

The amusement was short-lived when the same idiot went on to insult Jason too. Darn! He didn't need any alcohol in him to start a fight, but Kyle was trying to avoid it with Haru there. He still balled his hands in fists though. "Do you have a degree in being an asshole or do you just not know your ass from your mouth? Cuz all that comes out of it is crap."

"Says the one who's acting like teenager. Just because you're older doesn't mean you're any better than us, buddy," Skylar spat back, brows furrowed in frustration. He was the one acting like a brat, whining and complaining ever since they had arrived. "And I am not a liar, thank you very much."

Skylar didn't consider herself to be a sensitive person, years of being teased by her brothers and their friends had given her a tough skin to most things. She'd grown up in a home where it was frowned upon to show your emotions so she'd become used to bottling things up inside. So that's what she did, choosing the brush off Harper's comments instead of letting them get to her. Besides, he was just looking for attention and they weren't doing any good by giving it to him.

She did appreciate Kyle's comment to him though though, a smirk pulling at her lips as he retorted back to the older male.

When she was told she would be part of a team, Autumn expected a few rough spots. What she didn’t expect, however, was for everyone to start arguing the first night. And it was all thanks to Harper. Complaining was one thing, but insulting was another. Autumn honestly didn’t care about whatever built up tension he had. He needed to release it another way. And change his language a little. It seemed like every word that came out of his mouth was like sewage. It reminded her of a waste pipe, oozing green waste in an unsightly manner. This could probably be fixed if he stopped cursing, though Autumn doubted that it would happen any time soon.

“Let’s all just calm down, alright?” She said with a discontented sigh. “I bet that after some food and rest we’ll all be happier.”

Harper held up his hands as Skylar snapped at him, "Hey, I'm not saying I'm better than you. I didn't even want to save the world, remember?" He leaned forward on the table and held out a finger, "There's only one thing I'm competitive in, and that's swimming."

He snorted at Skylar's liar comment, though. "That's funny. I don't have a great memory, but if I recall correctly, you said you wanted to work in PR for companies, specifically to cover up for them when they screw up, amirite? That's pretty much the closest you can get to professional lying, besides lawyers."

And then the blonde guy spoke...Harper's eyes widened and he laughed loudly. Guffawed, more like...he even clapped his hands. "Dude, I have a god-damned P-H-D in assholery," Harper finally answered, still giggling, "And I didn't need to go to college for it, let me tell you."

Before he could, Autumn interrupted, apparently wanting to diffuse the energy. Still, she had a point. "I bet you're right," he said, still grinning from the blonde's comment. "I don't know what you're talking about with the calm stuff, though. I'm calm as a cucumber. It's these guys who don't know how to take a joke."

As soon as a dark haired young man stabbed the armored beast, everything changed. The world seemed to disintegrate into a white void, before that too was ducked in until there was darkness. Utter and complete darkness. Aria couldn't tell which way was up or down, or whether she was sitting or standing. Then an ethereal voice, which dripped with wisdom, narrated a story. It was one she hardly believed. They were supposed to go to this weird place called Aires. The weird girl with the blonde hair seemed to know what that place was. Then, she began to think, trying to make a decision. An argument erupted around her, the source of which was Harper, but she just ignored everything. Finally, she stepped into the yellow light and was whisked away.

Everything after that happened in a blur. Her and the others suddenly landed in a field. They were introduced to a fire headed person named Haru, who was the owner of the mysterious voice in the void. He somehow already knew their names, and listed their month and power. Fire? Aria looked down at her hands for a moment. Was she really capable of something like that? They were all taken to an attic, and she gingerly chose a bed as close to the back as she could. Next thing she knew, everyone was heading to the tavern. "Might as well... she thought.

Aria headed to the tavern and was met with a wall of noise as she stepped in. It was full of bustling people, all very lively in their chatter. She was used to this; it reminded her of New York. Aria didn't realize just how hungry she was until someone came over to their table to ask what they wanted. After ordering, she turned to examine the others. So they were a team, huh? One by one, people started to introduce themselves. It was started by the girl named Skylar. In no time, harsh words were being sent back and forth again. Great team they were. Aria let out a laugh at Kyle's comment. He had been pretty silent throughout the ordeal. It was amusing how quickly Harper could instigate arguments, he certainly had a gift for it.

“Let’s all just calm down, alright? I bet that after some food and rest we’ll all be happier.” Aria was glad Autumn was trying to calm them down. To change the subject, Aria decided to introduce herself too. "I'm Aria, and I've lived in New York my whole life. Oh, and I'm currently studying law at Columbia." She smiled meekly.

Jason, turning red, was about to say something in response to explain why he kept getting lost in New York, but then the blond boy commented. It kind of took him off guard, so there was a split second where he completely froze, and could almost hear an audible switch in his mind and an unwanted visualization. Now he was really just trying to hold in his laugh. Harper's response to the blond almost pushed him over the edge, so he covered his face with his hand and pressed his other arm into his stomach, trying to get his composure back. Even after one of the girls spoke about calming down and getting food and rest, he was still struggling to hold it in, but recovered... sort of, and let out a breath.

"Rest. Yeah. Rest would be good."

Jason, feeling way more carefree, still not fully recovered, smiled when he heard another girl introduce herself as Aria, "Hey. Kind'a like Arya from those Eragon books, huh? Definitely an awesome name. Mine's kind'a boring, but," he shrugged, "eh, who cares?" There were suddenly lots of questions he wanted to ask people on his hype, but they were too muddled in his mind to get one out verbally, so he shook his head, leaning back into the chair.

Suddenly remembering something Haru mentioned, asked, "Did Haru say one of you had a talent for reading tarot cards? How does that work?" He'd always been curious about that, but never enough to look into it for himself.

“Not really, but nice try,” Skylar said simply, a shrug rolling off her shoulders. “Besides, if I recall correctly- which I do because I have a pretty good memory- you said that you dropped out of college after one semester,” She paused, a smirk tugging at her lips. “So, Mr. Twenty-Two Year Old, what are you doing with yourself? Because while I’m sure that you’re pretty damn proud of that PhD you’ve got in “assholery,” I don’t think there’s much you can do with it except for bother us all.”

Skylar silently thanked Jason as he changed the subject, feeling sympathetic towards the Southern boy. It’d taken her ages to find her way around New York City, compared to the wide open spaces in Florida it was like a completely different world.

She turned to face Autumn as she began explaining how tarot worked, the blonde sliding the cards out across the table. “That’s incredible!”

"You'd be surprised," Harper replied to Skylar's quip. She hadn't exactly called him stupid, so he had no reason to be offended. Besides, the beer finally arrived.

He downed the entire thing (a bit strong, but it reminded him of whiskey in taste...really creamy) in one go and watched Autumn display the tarot cards, not entirely disinterested. The cards, at the very least, had interesting designs on them. He wondered if one could play poker with them. Or gin. Speaking of gin...

As if on cue, Haru explained how to order food. Almost immediately, Harper leaned back again, scanning. When he saw a pretty barmaid he called her over with a wave, flashing his best smile. "Hey, I'm new here," he said when she came over, "What do you recommend?"

Her words were accented, and he wasn't entirely sure what she said, but he continued grinning and nodded his head. "Great, I'll have that then. Oh, and can I get another one of these?" he pointed to his empty tankard. "Thanks."

The barmaid left and he sat forward again in time to hear talks of doing a reading. While he wasn't a particularly future-thinking man, he supposed a reading could be interesting. After all, if he got something like 'dies in seven days' he'd know to go all out in the carpe diem department.

"Do one for me!" Harper exclaimed, still smiling. He leaned forward, elbows on the wood. His ears felt warm, but other than that the alcohol wasn't taking much effect yet.

Haru rolled his eyes as Harper deliberately ordered another beer despite his advice. He didn’t care if he got something else but that house beer, that just wasn’t for him. Or any of the earthlings for that matter. But he wasn't going to take it away.

“That for me, man?” He hummed as he sat back in his chair and chewed on an unlit cigar. Honestly all of them were kind of idiots. Skylar didn’t have to call them stupid directly to see that. But he wasn't going to say anything, at least until it was time to get to business. If anything, his off hands approach was a good way of seeing what was wrong with them all.

Tallyho slid her way through a crowd of burly men who hovered over a table of gold and liquor.

Two men were seated face to face. One was very rough-looking—thick red beard, a wart under his right eye, broad, thick freckled shoulders, and a body just as large and strong. But his face seemed troubled. He looked ill, and he hissed as the man before him gulped down his last shot.

The other was a little lankier, but he was breaded for sure, and perhaps even a little older than the man he faced. One of his eyes were blue from blindness while the other was slightly crooked. As he finished his last shot, she wiped his beard, and spooned all of the gold from the redhead’s side, to his own. The crowd erupted into cheers and grunts.

“What are you playing? I want to play,” Tallyho said bluntly. She never considered herself a dainty person, but compared to the gruff voices of the barmen, and their hard stares when she announced her desire to play, she certainly fit the part. She tried to reestablish her poker face.

“You?” The redhead man burst into a gravelly chuckle, “You ain’t nothing but a little daisy!”

Another man chimed in, “yeah, you here with yer papa? Yer man?”

“He certainly ain’t doin’ a good job of keepin’ her in place, whoever he is,” the black bearded man huffed.

They erupted with laughter.

Tallyho’s face flushed scarlet with anger. She hated these bar types—loved the bars—but hated the sounds and smells of drunk men when she had to deal with them first hand.

As they laughed she balled up her fist and slammed it against the table. The glasses shook and the room grew quiet—but in an amused way. Some even began to chime into the silence with a patronizing, “oooooooooh”.

“I ain’t got no Pa and I aint got no man—so let me play,” she said. Her voice was firm.

The redhead man closed his eyes, raised his brows and held up his palms, “alrighty! Go on, play. But don’t expect noneofus’ to be kind to ye and get yer caretaker after yer wasted.”

As he moved away from the seat, Tallyho sat down, and struggled to scoot her seat up to the table. A few men whispered crass jokes. But the blonde focused on the black bearded man, whose face was relaxed.

“He used to be the drunkard,” he whispered loudly, “that is before he built up such a tolerance.”

Tallyho waved him off. The barmaid came around and cleared the table, replacing them with fresh rounds of shots for each competitor.

Tallyho eyed the gold on his side of the table. She was ready.

Haru took note of the situation. He was disturbed by two things, one that Tallyho was currently the most likely to get into a bar fight, and two, that the others probably didn't even notice, or care, that their comrade left the group.
He was also a little depressed by the group's tendency to fight, Harper's role as an attention whore, and some of their overly optimistic attitudes. It wasn't like Aires was a game....

He chuckled.

Autumn gave a gleeful smile. She couldn't do a reading for herself, seeing as she had done one earlier that day, but doing readings for others would not only satisfy her desire to help but it would also give useful information on the situation.

"Alright, I'll do some readings. It'll be a basic spread, three cards. Past, present, and future. Hopefully we gain some insight!" She flagged down a barmaid, ordering some bread and finally getting her beer. Cracking her knuckles dramatically, though they didn't make a sound, she shuffled the deck.

Tallyho left the table, leaving Autumn to wonder if she really had rambled on for too long. She cast a worried glance towards the other girl, but decided not to say anything. Tallyho was from here. She probably knew what she was doing. Or this was just her idea of fun.

“Alright.” She said, laying out three cards face down. “Jason first, since he asked first. This is a simple three card deck. Past, present, and future. Let’s see what we get, huh?”

She flipped over the first card. It featured a young man steering a small boat where six swords stood upright. “This is the past card. So, this has already happened.” Autumn explained. “Six of Swords. This normally means you’ve traveled lately, but it’s probably not a holiday. Maybe you had to get out of a bad situation?”

The next card revealed itself. A young man stood lightly on a Cliffside, seemingly unaware that he could fall. “A major arcana card for the present. This is The Fool. Keeping up with this travel trend, this probably is talking about the world we’re in right now. This card is about new beginnings. Though, I guess that’s pretty obvious. There’s choices to be made, and leaps of faith you should take.”

The final card was much less pleasant. Autumn frowned. The card was decorated with people falling out of a burning tower, the crown on the top falling off due to being struck by lightning. “Well, this is another major arcana. This one is The Tower. It’s a little
 dark. Um
I haven’t really done a reading where this card shows up before. But, basically, it means that there’ll be struggles. Uh, a bit of destruction possibly. Maybe some conflict.”

“All in all, there’s a lot of travel in here. It’s to be expected, I guess. But I really don’t like the look of that tower. You need to be careful. We don’t want that card happening. So, all in all, stay safe. I’m sure it can be avoided.” She really wasn’t.

“Alright, Harper is up next.” She shuffled the cards once more, quickly abandoning the previous reading. She really didn’t want to think about it.

The first card of the trio showed a man surrounded by his family and his dogs. Ten pentacles overlayed the picture. The picture itself was upside down. “Past card. Ten of Pentacles. Normally, this means pretty good finances. Since it’s reversed, though, my guess is that you’ve had to deal with some money problems. Maybe family issues as well?”

The present card featured a young man, grinning over the defeat of his enemies who were walking away solemnly. He held three swords, and two were laying at his feet. “So many swords today
” Autumn commented. “Anyways, present card is the Five of Swords. It’s kind of a tricky card.” Tricky in that it meant she might insult him. “Sometimes it can mean conquest and victory, but it can also mean aggression and hostility. It’s sort of a negative win. Like, you technically won, but it’s not all that honorable or good. So, depending on the next card, it could be good or bad.”

She flipped the last card. “Alright, here’s your future.” On it, an armor clad skeleton rode on a horse. It waved a black flag embroidered with a rose, trampling over people without a second thought. “This one is Death. Not literally, I’m not saying you’re going to die. Death is a change card. Like, new beginnings. It’s just not that pleasant of a change. It’s still a pretty positive card, though, all things considered. Based on the previous card, it probably means you’ll change your actions. I’d try not to avoid this card. It might be hard, but it’ll lead to a good outcome.”

Autumn shuffled the deck once more before laying the stack of cards on the table. Just in case anyone else wanted a reading. “It’s funny really, you’d think that Death would be the worst card of the lot. It’s really not. The Devil, now that’s a card to be wary of.”

“So, to put it simply, Jason needs to be careful. Actually, I think we all do. Since we’re a group, The Tower might affect us all. And Harper needs, is, going to change.” She smiled. “So, what do you think? Accurate? Helpful?” God, she hoped so.

Harper watched passively as she did Jason's. He didn't believe in this sort of stuff (in fact, he didn't really believe in anything spiritual), but it was still kind of cool. The pictures in particular were the most interesting part.

He only commented once during Jason's ("Haha, you got the fool") and then once again after ("Wasn't there a movie called "The Tower"? It was like the first big disaster movie or something") but was overall fairly civil. He leaned forward when it was his turn, smiling expectantly.

Had anyone been playing particularly close attention to his face, they might have noticed the furrowing of his eyebrows as the first card was flipped and explained, as well as a slight frown of his lips. However, none of these changes lasted very long, as Harper quickly dismissed the first card as coincidence. Besides, he wasn't struggling that badly with money. Although if he was stuck here for too long, that might be a different story.

The next card just confused him. Harper didn't care much about honor, but how could winning not be good for you? Then again, his dad had won many cases as a lawyer, and not all of them were morally good wins, either.

The future card looked the most badass. He almost laughed when she said it was Death, considering the Ring joke he had made to himself. When she explained it though, he hmmphed out of interest.

He leaned back when Autumn reshuffled the cards. "The first card was pretty close," Harper answered, "The second one confused me and the third one...well, everyone changes, whether they like it or not." His second beer arrived and he took a drink.

"To be honest, I don't really believe in anything like that," he said, putting down his mug, "It seems like something my sister would be into, though. She used to be really big in those...oh, what are they called," he mimicked opening and closing something with his thumbs and index fingers, "You fold them out of paper and you have to pick a color and a number and they spell it out to say your fortune or something like that..."

Autumn took a small sip of her beer, pushing the cards away just in case it left moisture on the table when she put it down. Perhaps she should have put them away? She didn't think that anyone else wanted a reading. "Well," She explained. "The Five of Swords is kinda about personal victories. Like, arguments." She really didn't want to touch this subject, in fear of another fight breaking out. Still, she felt like she owed Harper a more detailed explanation.

"So what it means is that you're possibly pretty aggressive, in words or actions. Maybe both. And it's not really a good thing. Like, someone who has this card in their present might think that they're winning arguments or that their actions are putting them on top, but it's really just not that good for them in the long run." She took another sip. It was actually pretty good for beer. "No offense or anything. I mean, these cards aren't absolute." Since nobody seemed to want a reading at the moment, she put the cards back in their case and away in her purse. It's not like she couldn't just pull them out if someone wanted a reading.

"Oh yeah, those things!" Autumn smiled warmly, recalling memories of elementary school. "What were they, finger catchers or something?" She laughed. "I admit, the cards do seem a little silly. Truth it I first started using them in middle school just to freak people out. You know, the whole teenager against the world phase. Then things starting lining up and it's like, woah. Used them ever since. The cards aren't absolute, though. They aren't meant to say that you're going to do something really specific and it will happen no matter what. They're more like guidelines. Hints about what could come to pass. It's up to you to decide what to do with that information."

Aria looked up at Jason as he began to speak. "Hey. Kind'a like Arya from those Eragon books, huh? Definitely an awesome name. Mine's kind'a boring, but," he shrugged, "eh, who cares?" Aria gave him a broad smile as he mentioned Eragon. "I'd be lucky to be anything like Arya, but I guess with this so called power I have, I come a little close." Then Jason inquired about tarot cards, and Autumn happily explained about them. Aria looked with intrigue as she pointed at each individual card, explaining its meaning and significance. The cards were strangely beautiful with their intricate illustrations.

Just then, Haru interjected with some advice. “Oh, on Aires, the barmaids don’t necessarily wait on customers in the way that you would imagine. You must alert them. In these parts it’s considered rude to assume yourself on others and interrupt their meals. I haven’t been on earth in so long; I nearly forgot your customs. Go on, call one over.” Aria then diverted her attention away from the cards to call over a bar maid and ordered something to eat, and a beer. As the bar maid left, she turned back to the demonstration.

One by one, Autumn flipped over three cards, explaining each one as she did so. The tower seemed bad, and she grimaced momentarily. Then, it was onto Harper's fortune. The second card that was flipped over seemed to fit, but the last one looked pretty scary. Once Autumn explained it, it didn't seem so bad. The bar maid returned with her beer, but her food was going to take a little longer. “So, to put it simply, Jason needs to be careful. Actually, I think we all do. Since we’re a group, The Tower might affect us all. And Harper needs, is, going to change.” It was pretty uneasy thinking about the tower affecting them all. "Let's just hope Harper changes for the better," she said before taking a sip of beer.

Harper chimed in with his opinions on his reading, and struggled to explain what the origami finger things were. Autumn offered up a guess. "What were they, finger catchers or something?" Aria snapped her fingers as she recalled those small contraptions; she used to make them all the time. "I always thought they were called fortune tellers." She took another sip and eyes Autumn's cards for a moment. "Do you think...you could do a reading for me?"

Even though he didn't care for tarot cards, Kyle was glad for the change of attention and subject because he didn't know how much longer he could control his rapid-rising temper. He felt like he would explode any minute. Even though he already hated Harper and didn't want to hear it, Kyle was also relieved when the jackass and a number of others started laughing at him. He chuckled despite himself, thinking that Harper actually sounded like a donkey when laughing. "hee haw, hee haw."

When the beers arrived though, he turned serious, staring into the mug and spinning it around between his hands. He remembered Haru's threat, but since he was stressed out over today's events he debated whether it would help calm him down. The blond had never even had alcohol before, and it was strongly discouraged at home. He didn't know know how long they'd be here, but he was pretty sure it wouldn't be within a week, so his parents wouldn't know if he did try. Haru didn't seem to know he was only sixteen, even if the redhead knew everyone's names. That was a little creepy. If the guardian did know their names, he could know other things about them as well. Ugh! This was giving him a headache again. He reached up to rub his head, and then skidded the mug closer to the head of the table where Haru was. "You can have mine. I'm not feeling well."

Kyle then got up from his seat to substantiate that statement, but he froze for a second when the tavern suddenly went silent, only broken by that irritating elementary school tattletale noise. Seriously, weren't all these people older than him? Shouldn't they have outgrown that by now? Though, if Harper was any indication, maybe not. He groaned a little but sat down again asking the nearest barmaid for some water and corn stew, and the noise returned full force. Well, he was glad he didn't take that drink. Since, he really wasn't feeling well now he might get drunk from just one drink, and that wouldn't be good for anyone.

Harper shrugged at Autumn's further explanation. "Eh. I do a lot of things that end of biting me in the ass later," he said, taking another swig of his beer, "I'm more of a man of the present. Live in the moment, carpe diem. You know. Dead Poet's Society stuff."

Finger catchers sounded familiar, but Harper's food arrived at that moment. "Thanks!" he said, catching the eye of the barmaid--the same one who had taken his order, he noticed--and smiled again, sending a wink her way before turning back to his food.

He half-listened to Autumn as he surveyed his food. There was a lot of yellow, bread looking stuff, but when he tasted it he realized it was just like a corndog, without the meat. There was also a bowl with what looked like a chicken pot pie, but probably with some sort of twist. On the side were corn cobs and a different sort of bread, in a roll. Harper wasn't a picky eater, and he dug in.

"Mmf!" he grunted with a point when Aria mentioned fortune tellers, mouth full of the hot interior of the pot pie. He swallowed before speaking, "I think my sister called them something else, though...Finger catcher is really close. It's like.....something-catcher...fortune catcher? Augh, I don't remember." He turned back to his food, but continued talking (to no one in particular), table manners still intact,

"Anyways, my sister would make her's really detailed. Like, first you had to pick a number, and she'd count. And then you had to pick a color and she'd spell it. And then you had to pick another color, and she'd open the flap and make you pick top or bottom, and then make you pick one of three numbers and then she would read out the specific fortune she had written for that. She had like fifty different fortunes written in that thing and it was almost impossible to get the same one twice. Some of them actually happened, too. Like, you know how kids are all about bubble gum? She had written this one fortune saying 'the next thing you'll put in your mouth will be gum' and it worked on like ten different people."

He laughed at the memory, breaking apart one of the rolls. "She's a smart kid. She just got into LaGuardia High School, you know the one for the performing arts? It's one of those high schools you have to do an entrance exam for or some crazy shit like that. Really prestigious stuff. A lot of famous people went there. She plays cello, so that's how she got in." Which reminded him of that one guy who went missing...the one with all the tough attitude. Harper could have sworn he'd seen him before...maybe he went to the same school? He decided to ask him next time he saw him.
