Age: Unknown (He appears to be in his late 30’s but he is centuries older)
Species: Faery (Specifically a cast out Wishing Star Faery)

Description:
Valen is a Faery Male with the appearance of a human in his late 30s, standing at about 5’10”. He has a clean shaven bald head and very lightly tanned skin. He has smooth skin and very lightly sculpted muscles. He is more of a magician than a physical fighter. However his combat skills are not non-existent. Valen is considered handsome by many, wearing long dark robes embroidered with silvery images of scarabs, and wore a dark tunic at his waist to match. Valen wears two leather wristbands and a necklace at all times with a ring that was worn during the years he spent in Anansai with his former love the Blue Faery. He has the ability to shift into Faery size but rarely does he revert from human size anymore. He, like other Wishing Star Faeries, has a pair of dragonfly like wings that can appear and disappear at will. He no longer sprouts his wings, doing so is a very rare occasion.

His love for the Blue Faery
Arrogance

Personality:.
Valen is a very interesting personality. He is, in his heart, a gentle and earnest man who loves the thrill of life. However he has had his heart darkened by the choice he made in steeping himself in dark magic. He enjoys toying with the lives of mortals as they are unpredictable in comparison to non-mortals. He used to be a firm believer in hope and true love, but that belief was twisted and lost with the failure of his relationship with the Blue Faery and his constant witnessing of the effects of Dark magic on mortal lives. He is most commonly seen as smug and arrogant. He can generally remain calm in most situations and feels he’s mastered control over whatever situation he finds himself in. To anger him means to make a deadly mistake or make a vicious enemy. He likes children because he feels that they rekindle the belief in purity that he had felt was lost on humanity.

Quirks and Habits:
Won’t harm children
He knows how to rip the magic heart out of others to see how pure or dark a person’s heart is
Smirks often
Likes to appear out of thin air and offer his assistance often without being summoned
His wand has been confiscated by the Blue Faery
Rarely sprouts his Dragonfly like Faery wings
Rarely reverts back to Faery size

Land/Kingdom: Valen Alus (He formerly belonged to the Star Faery Clan of Anansai)
History:
Valen Mori Elen has a long and complicated history. He originated some time very early in the land’s existence as a Wishing Star Faery, the Patron of the Dark Star. He along with the Blue Faery granted wishes for the mortal realm. He was much more interested in why humans made the wishes they did. He would toy with humans and used his magic to grant wishes that tended to backfire, often sticking around to chuckle at the end result. He would break rules quite often and got reprimanded just as much.

Image

He was present during the War of Summer and Winter. And wanted the Wishing Star Faeries to assist the Summer King. However the Blue Faery had forbid it. He with the the other Wishing Star Faeries withdrew from Anansai into the clouds above. It was during this time that he and the Blue Faery began a romantic relationship. The two were very happy and True Love had blossomed. With the ending of the Wars in Anansai the Wishing Star Faeries were once again able to grant wishes from the mortal realm.

Image

The Dark Faery regained contact with mortals and it was here that his fall into darkness hastened. He would begin casting spells on humans enchanting them into his control. He would have them do all sorts of things according to what he felt was best for them rather than what they wished for. He granted one human dark magic. He was able to conceal this activity from the Blue Faery but the truth came to light eventually. A young boy, whose father was given the dark magic by Valen, made a wish on the Blue Star and Down from the stars descended the Blue Faery. The boy asked for his father to be stripped of the dark magic given to him by a Dark Faery, as his father had been causing all sorts of trouble in their village with it. The Blue Faery assisted the child as best he could and returned to the clouds.

Image

Blue Confronted Valen on his activities as Valen had broken every Faery Rule in the book. Valen didn’t see what the big deal was. He had called himself helping the man and providing amusement for himself. “Mortals are our playthings. You can’t honestly take them seriously” Valen argued. Blue, with a heavily broken heart, explained “Mortals are not toys and lives are no less of value than our own. For a Star Faery to have such disregard for human life is dangerous.” Valen was confused as to where the conversation was headed. “Blue, Luin, what are you saying to me?” Valen replied on pins and needles. Blue then with tears in his eyes said, “Valen I love you with all of my heart. And it hurts every inch of it but I must do this. You’ve left me with no choice. As a Wishing Star Faery I no longer believe in you. The impurity in your heart has no place in Anansai. You can never return here again.” Valen’s wand was then confiscated and he was exiled from Anansai.

Image

Image

Having felt betrayed by the love of his life and ousted by his homeland he grew bitter, angry and heartbroken. He left Anansai and traveled to several lands in search of a place to settle. His opinion of mortals only declined further. He felt he was better and that because of them, he lost the love of his life. He decided that he’d start a kingdom of those like him, outcasts with a desire to master Dark Magic. He would then appear to humans offering them the chance to be taken away to a land of magic, where they could become strong and live a new life. After setting up the Kingdom of Valen Alus, he then quietly ruled. Those under his leadership lived relatively happily, learning the dark arts and leading their new found lives.

Image

Image

He would continue to meddle in the affairs of other kingdoms simply to play the devil’s advocate. He was responsible for providing the special poison to the nobles and aristocrats that would use it to murder the Parents of Moloch Markus. Incidents like this were small steps in taking his anger out on the world. He found managed to steal a magic relic called the Book of Cosmos from a Human mage that was guarding it. He used the book to craft an army from the sands that would fight t the death against anyone that would set themselves against his people.

__Luin Elen/ Father Superior__
__(The Blue Faery)__

Image

As the summit continued forward the King of Cinnabar took the floor. "As for your proposals for blockades, it is far too neat, Your Majesty. Wars are messy businesses, as I'm sure everyone at this table is aware, and neat solutions rarely work. Barring blockades would only lead to greater losses, on both sides of the conflict. As for the plans to have the Wishing Faeries inspect ships, how will they cope with weapons smuggled in? The Fae's weakness to iron is well known. If we are to agree to this, we must consider every eventuality."

Father Superior listened to his opinion openly. The young king brought up a very good and valid point. He hadn’t considered his own weakness to iron. Father Superior nodded in agreement. ”You bring to light a very important factor that I overlooked King Arim. In the event that Iron is detected a fae will feel discomfort, I imagine they will also work alongside the border patrols of the kingdoms during times of inspections. If iron is detected the patrolmen will be alerted and the smuggler apprehended I assume. Once the fae is out of the presence of iron, he or she should be recover with little problem.” he said in response to Arim with a relaxed smile. He appreciated Arim’s considering the safety of the faeries.

King Arkaelus spoke, "If you all wish to continue wars the way they have been fought for centuries, so be it. As for the trade, I would encourage you all to come up with your own proposals on regulation. In the mean time I suggest we take up in the festivities. There are many activities that are offered in the palace that anyone can take part in." He said after sipping his wine. He looked towards the newcomer, who had revealed her presence without formal introduction. "By the way, you never introduced yourself." Arkaelus concluded.

”Where are my manners, of course. I am Lady Fionnaghal Pynchon, High Sage of Kythiania, here as representative of my lands, and her interests here following our age long absence from world affairs.” As Fionnaghal spoke her name her voice took on a thicker accent than previously which persisted through the rest of her words before fading as she paused for breath. ”Now before your minds run rampant with whatever old wives tales that you heard when you were young, let me assure you that whatever mysteries that have been woven of my land they are equally likely to be fact as they are to be fiction. And unlike the Wasteland of Nemu our monsters are kept under control rather than left to roam free.”

Image

“Kythiania
now there is a name I’ve not heard in a very long time. Father Superior thought to himself. He knew it to be a place of great magic. As he looked upon the woman in intrigue he was addressed by Valen. ”Well Luin you look deep in thought. Perhaps you’re concerned with something a hidden secret perhaps?” Valen smirked mockingly at Blue.

Blue looked to his side where Valen was and smiled in a slightly sarcastic manner. ”You treat me as if I am a being not to be trusted.”

Valen huffed a quick chuckle before responding, ”Believe me Luin I wouldn’t be the first person not to TRUST The Blue Faery, and with good reason.” Valen couldn’t help but take verbal jabs at Blue. He was having a more difficult time suppressing his bitterness than he thought he would. Blue looked silently at Valen. He was clearly upset but refrained from responding. It was Blue’s lack of response that would, in the past, upset Valen worse.

Father Superior leered at Valen a moment longer and shook his head in a manner suggesting that he’d given up bickering with his former lover. ”I’ve a wishing star faery to locate. If you’ll excuse me.” he responded and quickly reverted to pixie size. He swiftly flew away toward the large entrance of the grand room. The guards were quite amazed at his ability to shift size and fly. They had to snap out of their staring to remember that they needed to open the door for the guest. Blue bowed politely to the men and exited as soon as the doors were opened.

Blue flew about the castle and decided to search the outside festival grounds. Niven would not have easily been admitted into the castle. There were so many people singing, dancing, and eating. Flying through the large crowds of people would have been suicide for the pixie sized Father Superior so he opted to fly above them. He couldn’t stand being human sized a moment longer. Not long after hovering above the people did he spot the runaway faery. At a dumpling cart stood human sized Niven stuffing his mouth with large dumplings. Father Superior was relieved to see the young fae was alright.

He flew toward Niven who was about to take another bite from the large dumpling in his hand. Blue materialized his wand and pointed it at the dumpling changing it into a large clump of cotton. After biting into the cotton confused Niven saw the pixie sized Father Superior fly in front of him. Shocked he jumped backward narrowly missing a large man carrying a couple of beer mugs. The large mortal fussed at the young fae urging him to watch what he was doing. Niven apologized and then followed Father Superior who motioned for Niven to come with him.

Image

Once to two reached the outer perimeter of the festival grounds they spoke. Niven chuckled nervously, ”Father Superior
. I- um
Fancy meeting you here of all places! Hehehe
”

Father Superior crossed his arms. ”Likewise.” he replied in a rather plain fashion.

Niven continued, ”I thought you were still in Anansai. You know, with important faery stuff to do
” He knew this was not panning out well for him. After realizing that he was still human size Niven reverted back to pixie form.

”Likewise I thought the same of you earlier. You expressly disobeyed what I told you. You thought you were in trouble before
” Father Superior reprimanded.

Niven was beginning to rethink his impulsive decision to go to Khalidor despite being told to do otherwise. “I’m sorry Father Superior. I just really wanted to be a part of the mortal world we help all the time. It’s one thing to fly over it all the time but to be down here, eat their food, hear their stories, celebrate with them
It makes me appreciate the work we do all the more. I just wanted to experience it even if just once, since I was going to be on punishment anyway. I figured I’d make it worth it.” Niven hung his head waiting for Father Superior’s further reprimanding.

Father superior smiled, much to Niven’s surprise. ”Dear you have an uncommon gift for making me change my mind. Perhaps I was a little overly strict earlier. Your actions today, despite how disobedient they may have been, have inspired me. Also it has been brought to my attention, being present at the summit, that things are changing in the world around us. We may be taking a more active role in things soon. You’ll receive a free this time, but do know that no such luck will come to you should there be a next time.” The two began to make their way into the castle.

Zexen looked on trying to figure out why Father Superior had abruptly flew toward the exit of the room. It must have been something his father had said to the Blue Faery. Zexen didn’t quite understand why the two bickered so viciously. He shot an accusatory look at his father but before he could say anything his attention was pulled elsewhere.

Dorian, King Arkaelus’ cousin, spoke out, "Well I'm bored of this conversation." Dorian said very nonchalant. "If anyone needs me, I'll be in the courtyard practicing. Zexen, how about we spar now?" Dorian spoke from across the room.

Zexen looked over slightly nervously. Haven taken a final sip of the Khalidorian wine he so loved, he swallowed it down and responded. “Umm
but of course Sir Dorian. It is an honor. Please lead on.”

Zexen began to take a few steps toward Dorian’s direction when Valen placed a hand on his shoulder. Zexen stopped to acknowledge his father yet did not look at him. He simply looked to the floor and listened. ”I’m proud of you my boy. Do well and show the Khalidor Grand General your tenacity.”

Zexen nodded in response. Although he didn’t let it show on the outside, he was already considerably nervous but his father’s attempt at encouragement only made him feel worse. He really didn’t want to disappoint him. Zexen knew he needed to focus and that meant booting anything distracting out of his brain, including expectations.

Image

He reached Dorian and gave a minor polite bow. Zexen realized that Dorian was considerably larger than himself. That meant this guy wouldn’t be easy topple without being extra tactful. Zexen decided relax. They hadn’t even left the main room yet.

As Dorian led Zexen down the halls Zexen noted how casual and friendly he was. Zexen smiled in relief. It was honestly nice not having to worry about being as formal with him. He was a General, a warrior, and one thing he knew was that warriors commonly got tired of noble formalities rather easily.

Image

”So Sir Dorian, you may have a slight advantage over me today. I’ve been cooped up in a carriage for hours today, and have had a considerable amount of wine at dinner. Go easy on me.” He snickered as he joked.

Amelia was quite surprised that King Arkaelus had decided to move on from further discussing his trade proposal altogether. She sat in her seat looking at the king quietly. He was a sensible man it seemed. Something about his disposition reminded her vaguely of her late husband. The thought provoked the welling of tears in her eyes. She quickly realized and casually closed her eyes swiping her lashes of any visible tears before returning to a pleasant smile. She noticed Father Superior leave the room, as it seemed Valen had provoked him. She wasn’t sure of the connection between the two but it didn’t seem to be a positive one. She wanted to thank the Blue Faery for his support in the past. She’s have to wait till later.

Turning her attention back to those surrounding her, she was pleasantly greeted with the site of the blooming fae Xiao. The fae girl was obviously bubbling with cheer being in the presence of the youngest Askara Prince, whom Amelia agreed was quite charming.

"Oh Meimei, Can we go see the festivies? Can I do my dance, the Prince didn't see it." Xiao said, and Tenanye looked at her. "Which dance, Little Sparrow?" Tenanye asked her coyly and Xiao Jingshen blushed red. "Meimei..." Xiao Jingshen groaned. "The umbrella dance, That was always my favorite." Severyn said mercifully and Xiao Jingshen smiled brightly. "Yes, the Umbrella." Tenanye said and turned to the princes, but her eyes were on Kiran. "I did a dance and a song, before you all arrived, I would do it again, if you'd like, but I can do another dance." Xiao said and then turned to Amelia and Fionna.

Amelia began to feel like a teenager all over watching Xiao in her giddy state. All smiles, Amelia’s smiling expression only grew brighter when Xiao addressed her and Fionna. "You all may watch if you'd like, I love to dance." Xiao grinned. "I can do a dance with umbrellas, and swords....not yours swords though, and not with the umbrella." She said, giggling bashfully before looking at Kiran once more. "Would you like to see?"

Image

Amelia looked at Fionna and Kiran with a bright smile of her own. She turned to Xiao and replied joyfully,”I would most love to see you dance! I LOVE dancing! I’m so sorry I missed you earlier! I’m sure you were most dazzling!”

Image

Amelia had a sudden idea. She wanted to help out the charming Xiao as best she could. Amelia continued, “How about you perform your most favorite dance for us, and then if you feel up to it princess, we all take part in a couples waltz? I’m sure Kiran would love to dance with you.” Amelia looked playfully at Kiran hoping he would catch on and agree to dance with Xiao after her solo performance. There was nothing like a first dance to cement a romance to be.

"You bring to light a very important factor that I overlooked King Arim. In the event that Iron is detected a fae will feel discomfort, I imagine they will also work alongside the border patrols of the kingdoms during times of inspections. If iron is detected the patrolmen will be alerted and the smuggler apprehended I assume. Once the fae is out of the presence of iron, he or she should be recover with little problem.” The Father Superior said in reply to Arim.

Arim raised an eyebrow and inclined his head by way of accepting the Father Superior's suggestion. He kept his thoughts to himself on how many ways that could go wrong, depending on which side a man was to stand. Had Aada not been there, he probably would have spoken freely. He could almost feel her disapproval if he had said anything. The last thing he wanted was Aada giving him the cold shoulder for the rest of their visit. He hazarded a glance across the table to Aada. Their eyes met for a brief second before she dropped his gaze. Arim rolled his eyes. What had he done now?

"What can you tell me about your magical studies? I confess, I have a bit of talent myself."

Aada turned her attention to Moloch, "My magic? Well," she settled back in her seat, "in Cinnabar, magic runs among the noble houses. Mostly we learn from one another or through experimentation by ourselves. But politics gets involved. Certain families will only deal with others and even then they won't always tell each other everything. I mean, why give an opponent an equal chance? Unless you're royalty, then they're tripping over themselves to tutor you in magic. Finding the best becomes difficult, especially when most of them can do parlour tricks at best. I am mostly self taught. There are precious few with a talent for pyromagy, so I began teaching myself when I was competent in that discipline. A lot of my education came from books I managed to find. My brother's talent lies primarily with air, as did King Seth, a much more common talent in Cinnabar, so of course he had the best of Cinnabar's best training him. What of your talents, Your Majesty?"

Aada saw Amelia rise from her seat to join the Fae, who were speaking with the Princes of Ashkara. It would seem that Aada would have to speak to her friend later. For the time being, she returned her full attention to Moloch.

"Forgive me, but that sounds like a waste," Moloch told Aada honestly, his hand absentmindedly stroking his beard. He frowned slightly at the inefficiency of the magical education available in Cinnabar. It sounded like any lowborn citizen of Drake taught at the Circle of Magi would know more than all but the most privileged of the Cinnabar.

"Your nobility sound undisciplined and short-sighted. Without a strong hand to keep them in line, they will tear your kingdom apart. I shudder to think of the accidents lowborn face with no Mages to teach the magical children born to them. As for me...."

He set his goblet down and held up his hands, producing a pair of flames, "I am also talented in pyromancy. It comes from the dragonblood that runs in my family. It gives me great gifts, chief among them fire and heat magic and resistance. It is difficult to burn me."

Xiao Jingshen bit her lip. "I've never dance with anyone before." She replied to Amelia feebly. "I'm afraid I don't know how..." She said adorably. Amelia was surprised to hear that Xiao hadn’t danced with another person before. It was somewhat odd considering it was obvious that the young fae loved dancing. Amelia wondered if dances involving two people were an uncommon thing in Anansai.

Amelia replied with an innocent and nurturing smile. “I would gladly show you how. It’s fairly simple, and once you start your feet simply carry on with the rhythm of the music naturally. I would love to learn a dance of yours.”

Before another moment could pass Amelia heard Kiran’s voice bellow, "I could teach you!" He blurted out before he could stop himself, and he quickly looked away to (unsuccessfully) hide the slight tinge of pink dusting his cheeks. "I mean, er, I could dance with you afterwards. If you want to, that is." He mumbled in a more sedate, though mildly abashed tone.

Amelia was so glad to see the young Ashkara prince was quick witted even though he was flustered. He had an honest heart, she could tell. Amelia thought to herself, had young Xiao and he not fallen for one another she would have desired to court the man herself. She wondered if she’d ever remarry. She wasn’t quite sure what it would mean for the kingdom or her rule to have a king reign after having gotten accustomed to having a queen as the solitary ruler. If she married again would she become subservient to the decisions of her husband? Would he have the same level of concern and caring heart for her people? These were all things that began to race through her mind.

Valen, standing nearby, could sense the wrestling within Amelia’s heart. Being considered a friend of his, he approached her and inquired as to her worries. ”What troubles you Queen Amelia? I am a listening ear for you should you choose to confide in me.” Valen said taking her hand gently into his own.

Image Amelia looked him in the eyes and smiled vulnerably. ”I was thinking about the consequences should I choose to remarry.” she gave a brief snicker and then continued, “You wouldn’t happen to be in search of a wife now would you?” She liked Valen, he was fairly handsome, she trusted him, and he was single. Had he feelings for her she probably wouldn’t object to a union with him. Although, it would probably be odd concerning Zexen and her are somewhat fairly close friends.

Valen gave a surprised smirk before replying. ”You, my dear, deserve far better than the likes of me. Embracing me as your husband would be settling. Besides, my heart is still in the possession of another that I can no longer have. In the realm of love, I am to be considered broken. As one who calls you friend, I much desire for you to marry for love, the love you deserve like your late husband was for you. Worry not. That love will come to you. I will also try to assist in making that so.” Amelia stood to her tip toes and gave Valen a quick peck on the cheek. He wanted to smile more than he was but he tried to maintain a cool disposition. Amelia knew this and paid little mind to it. She was just happy to have someone to confide in.

Xiao agreed to dance for the group once more. Amelia was eager to see it. Xiao called for a servant, whom in Amelia’s opinion looked quite peculiar. He had pink skin and was quite short. "If you'd like, follow me outside. I can't do this dance in doors." Xiao said and Severyn without missing a beat, stood, standing sentry beside the young princess before they all made their way outside. Amelia was further intruiged by the disclaimer that the upcoming dance couldn’t be performed indoors. Amelia wondered what was about to happen.

Severyn stood back. "You all would do well to stand back." He warned good naturedly, standing back a bit himself. Having heeded the handsome elf’s words Amelia followed suit. Honeythorn, the pink skinned elf boy, began to play music while Xiao Jingshen rocked slightly and began to sing. Her dancing was entirely otherworldly. She made many paper umbrellas twirl and spin in the air as if they were dancing in the wind along with her. Xiao herself took to the air and Amelia was most astonished. Amelia couldn’t help but smile and gasp in excitement. Xiao was truly magnificent. Severyn, began to clapping madly. Amelia noticed the pride in his eyes which also made Xiao giggle and smile at him, holding her pose for a moment longer before Xiao and the umbrellas gently floated down, and in one final trick, she spin on a heel once safely on the ground and catching each umbrella as they floated down, she gave a final bow and smiled. Amelia clapped and cheered as well.

"Well done, Little Sparrow, Well done." Severyn said, pulling her into a side hug. Amelia enjoyed the brotherly and sisterly bond the two fae shared. "What did you think?" Xiao said nervously.

Amelia looked over to Kiran who seemed to be in a world of his own and rightfully so. She giggled and replied to Xiao, “MY WORD your dancing was simply MARVELOUS!! It was as if you were transcending worlds! In comparison I’m afraid my teaching you to waltz wouldn’t be half as interesting.” Image She stepped into a more open space and spun around in her gown in an effort to mimic the spinning umbrellas of Xiao’s dance. ”I hadn’t a clue dance like that was possible! Well, as promised Kiran and I will show you how to dance with a partner.”

After a few moments, when everyone was ready, Amelia began her instruction. She took Kiran by the hand and guided him over to Xiao. Amelia gently lifted Xiao’s hand up to place Kiran’s in hers. Now that the two were gently holding hands it seemed that their nerves were melting off of them like thawing ice. Amelia positioned the two, silently, in the typical fashion for a couples dance. Amelia turned to Severyn, who she imagined was a pretty quick study and asked him if he would assist her in teaching Xiao how to dance with a partner. ”Prince Severyn would you mind dancing with me? It would better help Kiran show Xiao how to do it if she has another example to glance upon at the same time.”

When they were ready Amelia’s musician, a talented violinist, began to play an upbeat melody. A nearby local musician with a drum began to chime in and the jovial melody was well rounded out. The group began to dance. ]Image Amelia bowed before Severyn and extended her hand which he took. They began to prance swiftly about. Amelia was thrilled that Severyn was almost a natural at dancing. He was indeed great at improvising. Image Amelia spun about Severyn and he added a few very well placed moved of his own. Amelia felt as if she were dancing with a professional. Image
Image After a few minutes of fast pace dancing the musicians slowed the pace gradually so that a slow dance could begin. As the music transitioned Amelia rested her head upon Severyn’s chest gently as the two danced slowly. She hadn’t quiet placed much thought into her actions at this point, she was simply feeling and flowing. She mostly felt comfortable and was rested in his arms. Image

Severyn bowed once more to Amelia. "You honor me, Your Grace, but I am only a prince." He said rising. "I am Prince Severyn Alderson, Son of the Alder King of the Seelie Court of Anansai." He said smiling at her. Amelia’s pale cheeks blushed softly as if they were faintly feather powdered with rouge.

Image

”Tis a great pleasure Prince Severyn.” Amelia replied with an increasingly bright smile. She really felt like how the 16 year old girls would look at court when attending a ball for the first time as honorable ladies. They would usually look as if their hearts were all a flutter as they were introduced to young gentlemen upon the first dance. Amelia remembered that she wasn’t a noble when she was 16. She was simply a court magician back then.

Severyn cleared his throat. "Your Grace, I believe we were in the middle of a lesson." He said and gestured to Xiao Jingshen and Prince Kiran. This somewhat snapped Amelia out of her brief daydream. Xiao Jingshen giggled. "We can wait." She said a mischievous glint in her eyes as she looked from left to right. Severyn narrowed his eyes.

Image

Amelia giggled at the fae prince’s reaction to Xiao’s gestures. She placed her hand gently on his arm casually. It was her way of trying keep him from looking so cross with Xiao. Although, Amelia was pretty sure that this was common of Severyn. She found it cute to see him look so fussy. After her giggling subsided Amelia composed herself once more.

Image

”You’re quite right, we were. Please won’t you do the honors of instructing?” Amelia said coyly. She watched as Severyn instructed and guided Xiao and Kiran. He looked like a father guiding young children. It was a gentle sight. She vowed within herself to remember this image of Severyn. It reminded her of her late husband, when he and her first danced together. It was the same sort of gentleness both men displayed. She missed that very much.

Image

Valen approached Amelia and he could see she was deep in thought. He wasn’t present throughout most of the dance lesson. He spoke to the group ”My apologies for interrupting your fun. However I promise I bring new of more festivities. I was informed that there will be a masquerade festival this evening. We are formally invited to attend. I’m sure there will be plenty of opportunity to dance more there.”

Tenanye slide on her mask as Arkaelus asked. The smell of grilled meats, wafting in the air, as they reached the palace. Tobacco smoke billowing from pipes, as they past. Thanks to the mask, while it did not hide her beauty, still visible was the graceful curve of her chin and her soft pink lips, no one knew her to be the fabled Faerie Queen. She liked the mystery and most faeries enjoyed a good masquerade.

"We didn't really eat much while we were at the summit." Arkaelus said and Tenanye merely nodded. With that creature there, she hardly had the appetite, beside human food was a little bland but she wouldn't be rude. "So we might as well eat here. There's a lot of game brought to the festival from all over the provinces. Have you ever tried bison?"

"Bison?" She mused. She scanned her thoughts for the term. The image of a large beast appeared in her mind and she smiled. "Oh you mean Buffalo, No, I don't think I had the pleasure." She said. "I must admit, most of the animals we have in Anansai, aren't ones we eat. We have buffalo but we don't eat them." She said with a slight shrug.

Image

Severyn watched as Xiao Jingshen danced with the Ashkarai prince., seemingly lost in the dance. It was sweet to see her. She was such his own sister as she was the Empress'. He had no siblings of his own, his father much too proud to bed share his throne with a woman, not unless she was the former Empress or the current one. It had been disturbing watching his father speak about how he would take the young Princess for a wife, the same princess that Severyn himself pinned for. If was unsettling to was his father flirt, with her, hoping to get her to swoon, but Tenanye had always been such a strong woman, she didn't even bat an eye.

It was just as he began to wonder about her, did a voice appear from behind. Severyn's hand went instinctively to the hilt of his sword at his hip, not for fear, but for recognition. Xiao Jingshen broke from the dance, standing straight with wide eyes.
”My apologies for interrupting your fun. However I promise I bring new of more festivities. I was informed that there will be a masquerade festival this evening. We are formally invited to attend. I’m sure there will be plenty of opportunity to dance more there.”

Severyn narrowed his eyes, stepping in front of Amelia, protectively, Xiao Jingshen already safely behind him. It wasn't that he thought Valen would attack, but he wanted him to know how much he distrusted the self proclaimed Dark Fae.

"You address a Queen, a princess and two Princes, you bow before speaking." Severyn said, though his voice did not rise, his tone was not a pleasant one. He turned to the aforementioned group. "Your Grace, Princess, Prince, let us go." he said, and ushered them toward the festivities, he could hear the music and smell the food, it wouldn't be hard to find.

Amelia saw Valen and smiled. He was a friendly acquaintance in her eyes. However she noticed Severyn's hand went instinctively to the hilt of his sword at his hip. Xiao Jingshen broke from the dance, standing straight with wide eyes. Amelia wasn’t quite sure why Severyn and Xiao reacted in this way to Valen. Her eyes curiously honed in on the two fae.

”My apologies for interrupting your fun. However I promise I bring news of more festivities. I was informed that there will be a masquerade festival this evening. We are formally invited to attend. I’m sure there will be plenty of opportunity to dance more there.” Valen said to the group lightheartedly.

Severyn narrowed his eyes, stepping in front of Amelia, protectively, Xiao Jingshen already safely behind him. "You address a Queen, a princess and two Princes, you bow before speaking." Severyn said, though his voice did not rise, his tone was not a pleasant one. He turned to the aforementioned group. "Your Grace, Princess, Prince, let us go." Severyn said, and he began to usher them toward the festivities.

Before they could leave Amelia turned toward Valen, ”Lord Valen won’t you join us?” She said, a hint of concern in her voice. Severyn kept Amelia and Xiao moving.
Image

Valen managed a smile and replied. ”Your Grace, I wouldn’t miss it for the world. However I must find my son first. Please enjoy.” His smile faded as the group advanced further out of view.

Image

The music and smell the food from the masquerade filled the atmosphere. Amelia took it all in and it was delightful. Everyone wore masks and the smell of wine, rum and other whiskey danced vividly through the air. It was almost instantly intoxicating. Amelia shook her worries regarding Severyn’s disposition toward Valen and looked about every which direction. There seemed to be something exciting happening at every angle.

Image

Amelia saw a vender selling masks of all kinds and the sight gave her a sudden jolt of excitement. Before she knew it she was like a teenager on a first date. She sprinted a couple of steps forward and spun around while giggling. ”Masks! Oh how delightful they look. Prince Severyn, Princess Xiao, Prince Kiran, we must peruse this vendor’s wares!” She gently grabbed hold of Severyn’s hand and led him forward.

__(Valen Mori Elen)__

Image

Valen wasn’t surprised at Severyn’s aversion to him. He knew that he was an outcast in Anansai. He never held much respect for the leadership of Anansai since the Summer King and the Winter Queen. As he walked toward the courtyard he thought back on a conversation he had with the Blue Faery many centuries ago before he was banished from Anansai, before the two lovers were at odds with one another.
__Many Years Ago__

Blue and Valen sat high up in the night’s sky, located in the cloud lands of Anansai. The clouds were a dark shade of Blue and the stars were bright and illuminated the nights sky. Anansai was beautiful in its landscape and its lights could be adored from above. The Blue Faery and Valen sat admiring the view of the land below.

Image

”How beautiful Anansai is. Empress Tae Young has seen to it that Anansai thrives after a difficult war.” Blue said in a jolly manner as he admired the view from the clouds.

Valen smiled calmly. He kissed Blue on the cheek gently and placed an arm around his waist, pulling him close. ”Just imagine how much more Anansai would thrive with you as its benevolent and kind leader. The Blue Star should be down there guiding Anansai as a king, not assisting mortals and fae from the clouds as an Archbishop.” Valen whispered smoothly into Blue’s ear.

Image

Blue looked Valen in the eyes as he somewhat pulled away from him. ”Why would you say something like that? Don’t speak that way. Empress Tea Young is far more of a leader than I. You’d do well to appreciate her and all she’s done to keep Anansai from caving in upon itself.” Blue replied.

Image

Valen’s voice became firm as rebutted, ”I am not so easily impressed by the spider fae and her kin. How much wiser or fairer are they than you?! You are the fae I fell in love with. You are the fae that even mortals call upon in times of need. Not the spiders. Anansi performed but one miracle, closing the rift. You perform miracles on a daily basis for a dying world. You should be King, Emperor.” Valen protested.

Blue was mortified by the words passing his lover’s lips. Blue quickly interrupted Valen before he could continue his blasphemy. ”I WILL HEAR NOT ANOTHER SYLLABLE OF THIS!!” He shouted, forcing Valen into a shocked silence. ”I, as well as all of Anansai, am in Anansi and her kin’s debt! They fought for this land’s peace! I was selfish, I cared to protect the wishing star faeries, leaving Anansai to whatever fate befell it! I made NOT a noble decision during that time! You thank your wings that the Spider Fae is not here to witness your foolishness else they’d tear you apart.” Blue was very angry with Valen’s perspective.

Valen would not give up easily. ”If you refuse to believe in your potential like I believe in you. I will ask other Star Faeries what they think. I’m sure they will feel the same as I!”

”NOT A CHANCE!” Blue replied. ”The Star Faery Coven will hear no more utterances of this again! Do I make myself clear? Anyone under my leadership WILL show respect to the Empress.”

”BLUE!?” Valen replied as he was hurt that Blue had pulled the rank card on him. Yes Blue was Valen’s leader but he was also his lover and to Valen’s understanding that placed him above the other Star Faeries.

”That’s Father Superior to you at present.” Blue replied firmly. He did not like having to be this way but Valen gave him no choice.

Valen glared as he tried to hold together the remnants of his pride. ”Yes
 Father Superior.” he replied begrudgingly.

__Present Day__

Valen remembered that day well. It was one of those things one would never forget. Valen’s disapproval of Anansai’s leadership extended long before his exile from the realm. However he was willing to put on with Tenanye and Severyn for as long as it took if it meant winning Blue back. Even if the Empress and Prince despised Valen. Valen had reached the courtyard where Zexen stood among Father Superior, Dorian, Fiona, Skandar, and a young wishing star faery that Valen had not seen earlier. He shook off his earlier thoughts and joined the group.

”My son, how was your duel with the noble Grand General?” He asked with a smile. He placed a hand on Zexen’s shoulder. Zexen informed him of the outcome, ready to hear dissapointmet from his father in response. However Valen was easy going about it. He was glad his son gained a valuable experience and most importantly he was well. ”My child winning is a luxury we cannot always afford. However one can find far more value in a loss than a win sometimes. We should go to the masquerade. It will lift your spirits.” Valen tried not let his earlier thoughts regarding Father Superior and himself effect his present disposition. Zexen still hadn’t told his father of his plans to train in Khalidor under Dorian.

Dorian watched as Valen came down to greet his son. ”We should go to the masquerade. It will lift your spirits.” Dorian nodded towards that. "You should, Zexen, but first you should speak to your father about how long you'll be here. I'll be down at the festival, your first assignment will be to use what spells you know to find me." He told his new apprentice as he walked away.

He had walked to the stables and rode for a few minutes, he donned his mask. It was the face of the fool, one that he had worn every year. The point of the masks were to be unrecognizable and the fool was the last thing people expected a high born to play. Eventually he reached the center of Jodan where the festivities were at its height. So taking the part of the jester, Dorian searched the crowd for interesting figures to mess with.

After picking several fights and winning a purse of coin, the jester waltzed into the Smoking Ox. It was owned by a man who moved to Jodan from Whiteharbor. Usually foreigners didn't do very well with setting up shops outside of the slums, but he brought with him some of the finest mead the city had ever seen. "Round on me!" Dorian shouted, dropping the coin he had earned from his scuffles in front of the barkeeper. Then he wondered upstairs, maybe find some fun.

As Dorian stepped out in the tavern's balcony he saw a few drunkards. One had a broken nose and a torn ear, maybe an unlucky fisherman. Another had better cloth on him, colored wool, probably a lonely aristocrat. The third, like the others, was by himself. However, unlike the others he wasn't giggling uncontrollably to himself, and he had flowing locks of ebony hair. Dorian knew only one man that kept hair like that, but he was fighting a war.

"What's got you down in the dumps, friend?" He questioned the masked stranger, leaning against the railings.

Amelia picked out a beautiful scarlet colored mask fashioned into a rose bloom. Soon she, Severyn, Xiao and Kiran were greeted by Tenanye and Arkaelus. There were talks of a man wrestling a bear. Amelia was quite intrigued by the thought of such a sight. Severyn looked to Amelia. "I don't mind, What of you, Your Grace, we can do something else if you like?" He asked her, placing a hand atop of hers.

Image

Amelia smiled joyously. ”My lord I am most comfortable with wherever you decide to go. I, as well, would most like to see what all of the fuss and excitement if about. Yes, let us accompany them.” she said in response. She never wanted to let go of Severyn’s smooth hand. He made that ember of insecurity she always felt suddenly snuff out. She hadn’t had that luxury since her husband was alive. When the group arrived at the match Amelia was initially shocked to see that Dorian was the one battling the bear. However, when she thought back to the tough and slightly unpredictable vibe he displayed earlier, the feeling of surprise swiftly diminished.

As she watched the happening she was not quite sure how to feel about it. She admired how strong Dorian was but she didn’t feel the happening was quite right to the bear. This was a death match and one of them, if not both of them, could lose their life. She noticed Xiao’s discomfort and she didn’t blame her one bit. Amelia wondered if this sort of happening was considered common entertainment in Khalidor. She stood slightly closer to Severyn, ”I’n not quite sure how to feel about this.” she said as if deep in thought.

It seemed Moloch’s younger brother arrived and would be the one to comfort Xiao. Amelia thought that it was fitting. The little siblings of two headstrong leaders getting along with one another. Amelia watched with a smile on her face. She wrapped her arm around Severyn’s as if snuggling it slightly. She usually was very guarded with others but this was far from the case with the Fae prince.

Soon afterward Valen and Zexen came into view. Even with a mask Valen’s physique and style of dress was easily distinguishable. With them was the Blue Faery and another young man. Suddenly Amelia felt a sudden chill in the air, it was different than the cool breezes that Khaldor was known for. It was a warning from the wind. She looked un towards the sky with worry in her eyes. ”Something is wrong. The wind
it’s worried about something.” she said to Severyn.

Image

With a strange boom an odd wave of energy stretched across the land. Immediately Amelia felt a horrible pain overtake her. She felt faint and dropped down to the ground. Her dress fluffed out around her like a cushion. Severyn seemed to be affected as well as many others. Whatever was happening it was bad and Amelia had hoped it would soon pass.

Just as the man began to speak, there was sudden shift in the air. Like a storm on the rise. She pulled her mask from her face, tradtions be damned, it fell into the snow with a dull thud. Something was wrong, the air felt wrong, it felt like.....

"Magic..." She turned to the Northman, she didn't know him, but she didn't care either. She was scared.

Then suddenly, like something knocked the wind out of her, she was blown back, and then, there was pain. Her legs, once long and lovely crumbled beneath her. The magic was gone, completely. She pulled up her skirt to her knees to find her legs, gnarled and broken, bruised and purple, she bit back a horrible scream, grabbing her now useless limbs. She looked at them in horror, the once glowing blue runes were as black as night. She reached out, her hands shaking as she reached for her calf. She bit her lip, her brows creased into a frown as tears worked behind her eyes...she pulled back before her hand touch her leg, unable to bring herself to do it. Why was the magic gone?

Image

"You look beautiful. I think your mask suits you." Xiao Jingshen blushed behind her mask. "To answer your question, I am human. Well, Moloch says we have dragon blood, but I've never felt like a dragon. The philosophers in Drake like to speak about humans as though they are observers. I think it helps them study human nature better or something. Cyrus would know more."

"Dragons!" She exclaimed. "How wonderful!" She grinned.

"This festival is wonderful. We can dance or watch the perform-," Prince Kallias suddenly stopped, looking up toward the large citedal, she watched as a wave of magic came rushing toward them. Kallias then grabbed her, his back toward the wave, and she ducked into his shoulder as it blew through them.
Image

Kallias collapsed to the ground, while Xiao Jingshen was spun around and blown back on her knees. Her body quaked as she felt as if she were being pulled a part. Her arms was pulled behind her, as her eyes went wide, enlarging, the pupils sliding into small slits, the white turning a golden yellow. Her mouth opened, but no scream could be heard but her pearly white teeth, sharpened into fangs. Just as the change happened, it disappeared, pulled along with the rest of the shockwave, she then dropped unconscious beside Kallias.
Image

Image

ImageTenanye hadn't walked far, she was on her way toward where the music was coming from but was struck but the sudden burst of magic, she turned, just in time to see her sister dropped to her knees, all that was Fae in her seeming to come out at once and disappear just as quickly. It was only enough for her to see, as the shockwave blew through her as well, knocking her back. She kept her footing, there was a moment, she looked down at herself, checking for injuries and there were none. She took a step and that's when she felt it, pain, like her skin was burning. Breathing hard, she looked at her hands, they began to glow like the sun.

"No...No not now, not now!" She tried to tell the magic, but it wouldn't stop, she couldn't stop it, not this time.

She rubbed her hands but the glow crawled up her body until she was completely covered, her silks burned off, as her skin erupted into flames. She couldn't help her sister, she couldn't even touch her, so she ran as fast as she could, into the forest avoiding the trees and anything else she could until the flames disappeared and she dropped into the ground, she had just enough consciousness to cover herself with her arms, and curl up before she dropped unconscious, her body twitching every so often.

Image
Severyn felt the magic shift in the air, he turned, shifting Amelia behind him as the magical shockwave blasted into him. suddenly, the woman around him all seemed to be in horrible pain. Severyn himself felt as if he were struck, winded, and dizzy but Amelia, she went down, he managed to catch her before she struck her head but his sudden weakness made him unable to hold her up. Then Xiao Jingshen, it was like the Fae would torn right out of her and what shocked him the most was his Empress. He watched as she suddenly caught fire.

His eyes went wide and he understood now. Why she wanted to come here all of a sudden, why she was so eager to learn more about the outside world.

"Summer Queen," He breathed, before he watched her run off into the forest. He wanted to go after her, he needed to but between Amelia and Xiao Jingshen he wasn't sure what to do, that coupled with his own sudden weakness.

He understood what this was. Someone, somewhere just took the magic from them. He was only barely effected he was an Elf, not a Daoine Maithe like Xiao Jingshen and Tenanye. he could preform magic, spells and things like that, but wasn't made of magic, which was why he was only weak.
The people of Khalidor seemed to be in a panic, guards rushing around, maesters too.

He wanted to get Amelia and Tenanye but he swore to protect Xiao Jingshen, he figured if he tried to duplication spell, it would not work, so he could not be in three places at once.

Taking a breath, and caught a maester, who looked afraid. "you, get her," He told him and nodded toward Amelia. "Careful, she is Queen." He told him and the maester nodded, unable to take his eyes off of the Elf Prince for a moment before turning to Xiao Jingshen and his doppleganger. It was odd seeing his own face like this, howling in pain. "Peace, boy, peace..."He said, his voice calming as he kneeled down to him. He figured he'd never seen battle and never felt true pain before. " You're magic has been taken, try to breath through the pain." He said. This boy was born with magic. That was a curious thing but a curiosity for late.r He scooped up the near weightless Xiao Jingshen but she felt heavy and he was so tired. He shook it off, soldiering through it.

"Where's the infirmary?" He called out to who he thought was Dorian Ursuul but instead it was another dark haired lad, covered in furs tending to the woman who'd Xiao Jingshen ran into, her legs looked as through they'd been crushed but nothing fell, He and Xiao had sensed her magic, by the runes of her legs. He recognized them, Xiao Jingshen was very skilled with rune magic, if she were away, and still Fae, she would fix her.

"you all did this?" the woman said, and Severyn shook his head. "No, this was not Fae..."

"It was magic."

"Clearly, we are not the only one who posses it, My Lady, this was not us, Fae cannot--"

"Lie, I know..." She said and clutched to the man with her. "I'll find a maester." He said and it was then he found Dorian. "General, What in All Hells happened?" He asked him, danger in his voice as he clutched the girl in his arms. He spotted another maester and grabbed him, shoving him toward the girl with the broken legs.

Dorian was lucky enough to have looked at the palace towering above central Jodan, just as it disappeared. For a second he was in shock, then as he watched as people further up the streets collapsed, realizing there was an area effect he quickly cast the strongest protection spell he could muster. Then the pain happened. It felt as if his vir was at max stress, like his body was dissolving away, forcing him to violently threw up what had drank.

Now shivering he looked up at those around him. The fae queen, Tenanye, had burst into flames, running through the streets. Her sister had collapsed as well as Berlin. He grinned to himself if only for moment. At least he knew now how to deal with the Anansi fae.

With the pain starting to secede, the man stood up to watch the carnage that had been unleashed around him. Perhaps the only reason he was sparred was because of his protection spell, still he felt that much of his reserves had left him. Looking around, Dorian removed his mask and put his fingers to his throat. Using magic to enhance his voice, which made his bones ache, he shouted out to the crowd. "All soldiers and guards that can hear me, this is Dorian Ursuul, report to the center immediately."

Minutes later two dozen troops arrived accompanied dby tens of guards and several meisters. He designated the guards to search for the senators that had come to the festival and bring them to the Capitol for an emergency meeting. Then he called up eight soldiers. "The fae queen has retreated from the city. Seek her out and bring her to my apartments. Follow the smoke to find her." He told them, turning to ten more. "Find Arkaelus and bring him to my apartments as well. I want all of the royals treated for as soon as possible."

It was then that the elf rushed over to him. "General, What in All Hells happened?" Dorian sighed "No doubt an attack while we were distracted. These soldiers will guide you and Xiao to safety." He told him, walking over to the woman that Severyn was screaming about. The legs weren't working, but they weren't broken. Maybe paralyzed.

"Let's say what we can do here." Dorian told the crippled woman, examining her legs. He cast a light transmutation spell, one that made him bleed from the nose. Yet another after effect. The spell would make her legs work if only for a few hours until she could find a proper meister. "This should work for now." He told her.

The pain was excruciating. He didn't know what it was like to be whipped to the extent skin was peeled off, but he had a feeling it was a bit like this. He laid on the ground, waiting for the pain to go away.

"Peace, boy, peace..." A calm voice echoed over him. It sounded familiar and soothing. " You're magic has been taken, try to breath through the pain."

He took a slow, deep breath, focusing on the voice as he opened his eyes. The pain was fading, thank the gods, but he still felt winded. It was as though he had been conjuring fire non-stop for ten hours. As his vision focused, he grinned at the familiar face. Slowly, he stood up.

"Severyn, I'm glad you're okay," Kallias told his doppelganger. His eyes widened, however, as he found that he had not been successful in protecting Xiao. He staggered over to her with a sinking feeling. He had failed. Her sister had trusted him to protect her and she was still hurt and, judging from her unconscious state, even more than himself. He walked beside Severyn as he carried her.

"By the gods, I hoped to protect her. I wish I knew some medicine."

Moloch had been on enough battlefields to develop a certain sixth sense when it came to danger. Most veterans did so, whether they were mages, rangers, drakons, or knights. Thus, he had already conjured a flaming shield around himself and Aada when the shockwave hit. He was knocked off his feet, his breath knocked out of him as the pain hit. He felt as though he had been stabbed through the heart, but he fought to stand up. He was no whelp that he would lay on the ground, waiting for whoever was responsible to finish him off.

He looked around him, his vision swimming.

"Aada, are you alright?!"

Aada stepped back when Kallias arrived. He held a mask out to Moloch, "Moloch, the masquerade is starting. I got your mask here."

"Cyrus designed it, didn't he?"

"He thought you'd like it."

"You should go ahead. I'll look for my brother. I'm sure I'll find you in the crowds Your Majesty."

Aada curtseyed to Kallias and Moloch before taking her leave. She retraced her steps to the hall they had been gathering in. She lingered by the door, searching the room for her brother. From what she could see, Arim had retired elsewhere. "He's in his quarters Your Highness," one of their footman arrived at her elbow.

"Where are they?" She asked.

"I'd be happy to escort you," the young man offered. Aada nodded her agreement and followed the footman through the Citadel. He stopped outside Arim's quarters. "These are his quarters, Your Highness."

"Thank you."

The footman bowed and left Aada. Aada knocked on Arim's door and waited for him to answer. When he opened the door, Aada noticed that Arim had already changed his clothes. "Ah, I take it you won't be joining us at the masquerade?" she asked.

Arim looked down at himself, "No, I won't be. The journey has tired me too much for the revelries. But you go, enjoy yourself. You deserve it." Arim placed a kiss on Aada's forehead. "Your rooms are next door, I made sure of it."

"Rest well."

Aada checked her mask was in place. Even though everyone's faces were covered, she was sure she could find King Moloch in the crowd. All around her, people were dancing with abandon. The smell of food and alcohol was heavy in the air. Music and laughter echoed through the streets. A crowd seemed to be gathering.

In the centre of the crowd, Khalidor's general was fighting a bear. This was definitely something new. Bear fights weren't something that happened in Cinnabar. To fight the bear without weapons seemed suicidal, but the general carried an air of cockiness about him, a self-assurance in his victory. Aada shook her head and turned away from the fight. She spotted Moloch's mask a little way away. Thankful for familiar company, Aada weaved through the crowd to Moloch's side. "I thought I'd lost you for a moment."

As the celebration continued, Aada felt a sense of unease growing. She instinctively moved closer to Moloch. She felt magic being used behind her when she was knocked off her feet. Moloch fell over her, protecting her from the worst of the blast. Aada pulled her mask off. Her ears were ringing from the blast. The breath had been knocked from her. She gasped for breath. She looked up at what remained of the Citadel. Oh Gods no. She felt panic rising in her chest.

"Aada, are you alright?!"

She nodded, "I think so." She rose to her feet shakily. "Arim's in there."

Image

In his quarters, Arim woke in a cold sweat. He was tangled in the sheets. He kicked them off and stumbled to the window. There was a mist stretching out across the sky. This didn't look like a normal mist though, the colour was off. The air was humming with magic. He felt weak. He needed Aada. He should have gone with her. She would know what to do. She always did.

The mist began to recede. The magic grew stronger and darker. He tried to push against the air to form a shield around himself, but his magic was weakened. He felt panic wrap itself around him. He threw himself under the desk, wrapping an arm around his head and trying to form a small barrier around him with the free hand. A weak barrier formed, but the pain he felt was agonising.

The blast tore through the Citadel. Arim was thrown forward. He bounced off the floor. The pain was instant as his head smacked the stone floor. He could feel his heartbeat in his ears. He gingerly pressed a hand against his ear. There was a thin trickle of blood. His head was of more concern. He could feel something hot and wet trickling through his hair. He no doubt had broken bones. His leg definitely if the sharp pain was anything to go by.

While he waited for help to arrive, questions chased each other. Who would do this? Was this Sphex's doing? He was the only one that made sense at that moment in time. Valyria? Their absence was noticeable. Arim fought to keep his eyes open while he waited for someone to find him.

Zexen, Valen, Blue, and Niven headed towards the festival leaving Skandar and Fiona behind in the courtyard. Blue, Zexen, and Niven nodded politely towards Fiona having realized that she was not accompanying them to the festivities. Seeing that Dorian had prematurely spilled the beans in telling Valen that Zexen would be staying in Khalidor, Zexen would have to explain the matter to his father.

Image

Valen looked toward his son with a raised eyebrow waiting for Zexen to explain. Zexen took a deep breath and began. ”As Sir Dorian already stated, I will be extending my stay in Khalidor to train under Dorian in Khalidorian magical arts. I hope I will have your blessing father.”

Valen wasn’t too hopeful regarding the General’s potential to actually help his son but if Zexen believed in a cause he wanted to support it. Valen gave a subtle smile and responded, ”If you feel it is necessary, I will support your endeavor. However I will be sure to have a little talk with the Grand General so that WE have an understanding.” Valen wanted to ensure that Zexen was treated with the utmost care. His son was the most precious thing in the world to him.
”Thank you father.” Zexen replied.

The group explored the festival grounds after having acquired masks for themselves. Niven was drawn by the sound lovely music being played. He could tell it was magical. As he looked upon the young lady playing he could see what he was feeling. She had most definitely been in contact with Fae in some substantial manner at some point in her life. It was an odd assumption but it stood out to him somehow. He smiled almost mischievously.

Image

He soon rejoined Father Superior, Valen and Zexen. Father superior could feel something was wrong. He felt a building up of magic in the distance. He looked about and could feel something ascending into the sky. ”I have a feeling something terrible is upon us. I can’t quite place what it is other than strong magic.” He said.
Image

Niven looked upward and shouted ”Father Superior, Look! What is it?”

Image

Valen’s eyes widened in terror. He had a feeling he knew what manner of magic he was seeing. He knew such a thing would severely harm beings like himself, Father Superior, Zexen, and Niven if struck full force by it.
Image

Zexen looked up in the direction that the others were focused on. He too began to worry. What was about to happen, he thought.

Image

Father Superior looked to Valen, ”I don’t have nearly enough time to conjure a shielding spell strong enough to fully protect us from what’s swiftly coming our way.” He said in a panicked manner.Valen gave a deep exhale and extended his hands out in front of him, conjuring up a very ornate tome. It was large and inscribed with magic runes. The tome was very old. Father Superior knew exactly what it was when he saw it. Valen hadn’t wanted Father Superior of all people to see it but this was a desperate moment.

Image

Image

Father Superior looked up at Valen and with a gravely serious sounding tone he spoke, ”That’s The Book of Cosmos
Where and HOW did you get this?!” Blue knew that the book of Cosmos was a very powerful magic relic that was protected by a powerful sorcerer of Legend. That item being in Valen’s posession was a bad sign.

Image

Valen replied quickly, ”As of now, that is unimportant. I will not allow that mana bomb to rip the two people I love most in this world from me. You’ll thank me later for this Luin.” Valen opened the book and began to chant. The book glowed a bright golden light and emitted sparks that looked like stars. He knew a disaster was upon them and everyone present would need people with healing magic, the likes that Father Superior had. He needed to be completely protected and the only way to do so was to absorb the Blue Faery into the Book of Cosmos temporarily. The glowing light of the book became a vacuum vortex that pulled Father Superior inside the book. Zexen and Niven watched the scene terrified at what Valen had done.

Zexen Shouted, “WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!!!???”
Valen commanded in response, ”THERE IS NO TIME. He is fine and will be fine. Stay close to me and do not move. The book will protect the two of you from the worst of the damage. It’s here. Niven, take the Blue Faery’s wand and when the wave passes use what magic you have left to release the Blue Faery from the Book. You will need something that belonged to him in order to free him. It will not be easy but with his wand you can do it. Prepare for great pain.”

Image

As soon as Valen concluded the mana mist was upon them. Valen himself was outside of the protection spell cast by the Book of Cosmos and was hit with the brunt of the mana wave. His hands shot up into the air and he let out a painstaking cry. His magic was being violently pulled from him. He held lots of Dark Magic and dark magic was perfect from destructive use. It suited the purpose of the mana mist perfectly and it pulled as much as it could from Valen as it passed.

As the wave hit the protection spell cast by the Book of Cosmos Niven and Zexen double over in striking pain. What they felt was not nearly as bad as what Valen was experiencing but it was still not pleasant. Niven held on tight to The Blue Faery’s wand as he fell to his knees. Zexen cried out in pain, his whole body trembled and every muscle seemed to burn. He felt as if he were going to pass out. Zexen was the product of magic and this wave of magic sapping energy could have killed him. Zexen blacked out and several scenes from the past flashed in his mind.

Zexen awoke moments later to a scene of utter panic and terror. People screamed and ran about frantically. Zexen’s head was throbbing as it lay against the cold ground. Also in his vision was his father laying unconscious on the ground. Zexen’s eyes slowly trailed over to see Niven slumped over the Book of Cosmos, hugging his stomach with one arm and waving the Blue Faery’s wand over the Book of Cosmos with the other. Niven was trying to release Father Superior from the tome. However using magic caused him even more pain at the moment. Zexen crawled over to Niven and placed his hand on Niven’s. They both focused the magic energy they could muster and the Book of Cosmos opened and the golden light that vacuumed the Blue Faery into it had flashed revealing the Blue Faery to be freed once more.

Image

Father Superior looked as if he’d been in another dimension. He was clearly shaken but seemingly alright. Niven asked him if he was okay and Father Superior nodded affirmatively in response. Niven handed Father Superior back his wand and he cast a spell that restored strength to both Zexen and Niven. They would be fine. Valen, however, would need more time to recover his strength. Father Superior waved his wand and Valen reverted to pixie size. Now he was light enough for Niven to carry to a safe place. Father Superior spoke to the two Wishing Star Fae, ”Listen carefully. Take him to a place where he can rest and place him in direct moonlight. It will recharge his magical energies swifter. I must help whomever I can. Zexen take the Book of Cosmos and do not let it out of you sight or possession. This is a VERY powerful and dangerous magic tome. The owner of this book will come looking for it very soon I fear. However for now you should be fine. Just keep it from harm. I will see you soon.” Ble then shifted to pixie size and flew off to assist those in need.

Francis stood gracefully from his seat and took his wife’s hand, gently assisting her to her feet. “Well now that our business has concluded, My wife and I shall return home for the evening as it is very late. We bid you all a good evening.” He and Vanessa left the small council room and summoned for their carriage to be made ready for departure.

As the two walked toward the palace gates Vanessa inquired. “Francis what are you planning love?” She knew better than anyone that her husband would die to protect his best friend Moloch. Francis had not yet answered before Vanessa continued, “If you’re considering sending word to Moloch about the plans discussed here, I’m sure I needn’t remind you that said course of action would be considered treason.” she made sure to speak quietly enough for only the two of them to hear.

Image

Francis replied calmly while looking ahead. ”And if I am?” He didn’t what his wife caught up in his web of possibly death warrant signing affairs. If he was to warn Moloch it meant betraying his In-laws.

Image

Vanessa replied casually, ”Well I guess that makes us both guilty of committing treason now doesn’t it. You didn’t think for a second that I wouldn’t follow your course of action? Darling where you go I go. If you decided to embark the road to hell, well, to hell and back if necessary.” She said with a mischievous smile.

Francis looked relieved, he kissed Vanessa sweetly. ”Thank you my love.” he whispered. The carriage was prepped and the two set off for their home in Southern Valyria. Once home Francis explained his plan. ”Moloch is indeed too far for us to send word to him by letter or any conventional messenger thus I figured I’d have to use more imagination when pondering a method. Then it occurred to me to call upon the Blue Faery. When Sophinia arrived that’s when it occurred to me. We can have the Blue Faery send warning to Moloch in Khalidor. Wishing Star Faeries can travel the globe faster than most anyone, or so I’ve read.”

Vanessa replied, “Brilliant. I’ve always wanted to meet him. I’ve heard that he’s handsome. Now how do we gain an audience with the Blue Faery, doesn’t he appear to those of pure intentions and hearts? Darling making a wish that is ultimately an act of treason isn’t exactly my definition of a pure hearted wish.”

Francis smiled playfully and responded, “However, a desire to save a friend and his nation is a pure wish.” Wasting no time he exited their large home and wandered into the nearby woods. Francis wanted no witnesses, other than Vanessa. Francis, holding a lantern in his hand, looked up to the starry night’s sky and called out ”Luin Elen, I wish upon the Blue Star! I need your assistance.”

As the two of them stood waiting Vanessa folded her arms in impatience. ”I feel really bright standing in the middle of the woods at night shouting at the stars.” Francis simply embraced Vanessa and kissed her upon the lips. She began to feel better as she thought of their current situation as if they were on a secret date.

Father Superior was busy healing those that were injured in Khalidor. He suddenly heard that he was summoned. The Blue Star in the sky shined brightly he was needed elsewhere however there were still many injured here that needed tending to. Father Superior flew about the sized people to find Niven. He and Zexen were sitting with a recovering Valen in the infirmary. I must go as I have been summoned. I will be back shortly. There are still many that need help here so I will call upon the Star Faeries to descend down from the skies of Anansai and assist the recovery efforts here. Remember, keep the book of Cosmos safe.

Father Superior pointed his wand towards the open window and a shining blast of blue light shot out into the night’s sky and erupted like fireworks. Moments later many colored orbs of light descended from the sky. The many wishing star faeries flew down to Khalidor, it looked as if the stars themselves were fluttering down to earth. About twenty-five star faeries fluttered about gathering around Father Superior. Faeries the people of Khalidor have suffered a great tragedy. There are many injurned and in need of healing. Tend to them. Those that are suffering from magic loss mainly need time to recover, focus you attention on tending to those with physical injuries. Use faery dust sparingly as humans should only have minimal contact with it. Also avoid iron as you know the consequences. If anyone gives you trouble about your unannounced precense inform them that you are here upon request of the Blue Faery Arch Bishop in Anansai. I will return as soon as I can.” with that, the Blue Faery flew off towards the night sky bound for Valyria.

Moments later his blue light could be seen through the trees of the woods Francis and Vanessa waited in. Francis took notice and smiled as if he were a young child upon the sight of the pixie sided faery. The Blue Faery flew close ”Greetings you who have called out to the Blue Star, how my I help you?”

Francis replied after bowing, ”I wish to warn my friend of impending danger. It is out of concern for his life and my former nation that I called you.”

”Please deliver this message to King Moloch Markus of Drake City. He is currently located in Khalidor.” Francis said as he held a neatly written and bound letter in his hand.

Image

”I’m not a courier Lord Francis. Please send your letters the conventional way as I have pressing matters to attend to. Not to mention that there are limits as to how involved I am allowed to be with human realm skirmishes.” Blue replied.

Francis replied, ”I figured you’d say something like that. So I have something else that might persuade you that this matter is as much of a concern to you as it is to us.”

”I’m listening.” Father Superior replied as he clasped his hands together.

Francis continued, ”Sophinia of Anansai has requested that our Queen kill Empress Tenanye in return for Anansai Silk and King Theomus’ returned sanity. Caemryn will aid in Haviir Kabuk’s invasion of Drake City. Caemryn has agreed to murder your Empress and Sophinia has promised to give her the means to do so. Anansai is just as much in danger as Drake City is I’d imagine.”

Vanessa interrupted, ”Now do we have your help or not? This matter is beyond your pious principles.”

Image

Father Superior nodded reluctantly in agreement. ”Crudely stated but I agree. You will have my aid. I will see to it that Moloch is warned. Please take great care when dealing with Sophinia. I cannot stress how dangerous she is. Trust that her intentions are in no way good for anyone but herself. I must go, I see time is of the essence. Farewell.” Father Superior took the note after minimizing it down to size and flew toward the sky.

Zexen waited for his father to awaken from his unconscious state. Niven was glad to see the other wishing star faeries about in Khalidor assisting. Zexen was amazed to see all the other wishing star faeries. Seeing Father Superior and Niven was one thing but so many in one place was almost unreal. “So these are my father’s people, my people
I’m technically one of them.” Zexen starred in amazement wanting to speak to them however he couldn’t seem to muster the courage. Zexen couldn’t help but think on the memories that flashed in his head as clear as if he were reliving the moments while the manabomb struck.
Image

Niven noticed Zexen’s disposition. He stopped playing his wooden panflute and inquired. ”You look as if you’ve seen a spirit. Your father will be alright. If Blue says time is all Valen needs to recover then time will see to it that he does. However I’m sure there is something else that’s on your heart. If you don’t mind me asking, what’s troubling you?

Zexen sighed and then replied, “Actually I’m glad to talk with someone about this. You’re right something else is and has been troubling me for quite some time. It’s only now that I feel I’ve been confronted once again with it. Zexen said as he learned forward in his chair.

”While I was unconscious, I saw visions, memories, from my past. It was as if I were watching them from outside of myself yet still experiencing them all at once.” Zexen continued.

Image

Niven replied curiously, ”What were these memories of, happy or sorrowful times?”

Zexen shook his head slowly. ”Both actually. All focused on my time in Athedale and the person I fell in love with. We were friends, both soldiers in training. He seemed to understand my heart in a way that no one else seemed to. We became lovers, comrades, irreplaceable to one another. The memories all involved him and I.”

Niven inquired, ”I’ve never been in love before myself. Wish I knew what it felt like. What became of him? Where is he now?” Niven was excited and inquired as if he were a child talking with an older sibling he looked up to.

Zexen gave a melancholy expression, it was visible that the pain of the past was still present. “He died. He was severely wounded in battle and died of his injuries. I wanted to try to save him but Commander Peregrine said that he should be allowed a proud and dignified warrior’s death. I asked him to allow me to call out to the wishing star faeries but he said wishes are for the weak willed. In the end, I was ordered to take my love’s life. Memories
painful memories are what I saw.”

”I’m so sorry for your loss. I believe you’ll find love again, someday. Love
I don’t have to have experienced it myself to know that it’s all about you, inside you. You’re love, if that makes any sense. Sorry, Blue says I’ve good discernment abilities. So the things I say tend to come off a bit weird at times. Does your father know?” Niven asked.

Zexen looked over to his slumbering father. ”No, he knows nothing about my love nor do I want him to know. I’m afraid he wouldn’t understand. Also I did something I’m not proud of after that. However, that is a matter for another time.” Zexen explained. Dorian approached the two and Zexen turned his attention to him. Niven simply returned to playing his panflute quietly as Dorian prepped Zexen for the beginning of their training and a short journey by ship. Niven promised to continue to look after the recovering Valen while Zexen was away. He also continued to safeguard the Book of Cosmos until Valen awoke.

The night had passed, Zexen spent a mass majority of it being taught fire spells. He was given a ring that suppressed a portion of his mana. He was also instructed that he was to wear only light clothing. Khalidor was cold and Zexen was used to warm climates, given he was from Valen Alus. Khalidor’s winter weather was bothersome for Zexen with the proper clothing on however now it was twice as difficult for him to manage. Zexen allowed himself three hours of sleep before forcing himself awake to resume practicing. He prided himself in giving any task his all despite his previous failures in magic casting without the use of a weapon as a magic channeling device. So far Zexen managed to create fire in short bursts of wild flame. Sustaining a steady flow of projected magic proved to be difficult.

Shivering and hungry Zexen tried to focus on what he was taught. Dorian was a clear instructor but brief. It seemed that survival was the real teacher here. Zexen committed every syllable of instruction to memory but under the cold conditions maintaining focus was challenging. Zexen’s thoughs became clouded with the images of Valen his father, the Blue Faery, Niven, Dorian, the leaders at the summit. He thought on something the Blue Faery told him.

Image

”well you will not have control over magic of any kind if you don’t believe in yourself as a spell caster. This is especially true for faery magic. Wishing star faery magic is rooted in faery dust. A star faery is required to believe in his or herself in order for their spells to work most effectively. With your current attitude towards your magic, it’s no wonder your spells have been unreliable.”

Zexen focused on those words and closed his eyes. ”Failure is not an option.” he thought to himself. Then another mental flash occurred.

Image

Zexen saw Deias is former lover. Deias placed a hand on Zexen’s wrist. Their surroundings were bright and the air felt thin. Deias looked gently at Zexen and spoke. ”It’s easier to believe in yourself when you have someone that also believes in you. I’ll always believe in you.” The brightness faded and Zexen opened his eyes having eased to a more relaxed state. He opened his eyes to find that he was sustaining a flame in his hand. Zexen began to smile through tears. ”Thank you.” Zexen whispered.

Dorian walked out from his chambers to the deck to see Zexen still practicing the spells that had been instructed to him. Dorian had ordered that Winter's Kiss was not to be heated and that his apprentice would not be given cooked food. According to meister training, Zexen would need to use isolated fire spells to cook and to warm himself while being lightly clothed during their short journey. Should he fail to use the spells properly he would freeze. Over a third of apprentices in the Order quit or perish from one of the tasks within the first month, those that do make it usually become entry level meisters.

"Have you ate breakfast yet?" Dorian asked Zexen with a grin. "The bacon's delicious and the cocoa is phenomenal." He had already cooked his food in his chambers while reading over the budget. "Is there anything that you need help with?"

Zexen replied with a shivery smile, ”I’m finally getting the hang of sustaining the spell. I had to pull some encouragement from inside. I haven’t eaten yet. However now that I’m getting the hang of this I should be able to roast up my food.” Zexen began to light flame under the food to be cooked. ”So Dorian, where are we headed? It’s colder than where we were.”
