"I may be a thief, but overall I'm not that bad."
Not much is known about Daneryse, even to the few she might call friends. What little is known is she grew up on the outskirts of a small village in the north of the Free Marches. Her father was a pirate and a thief while her mother was an elven servant from Kirkwall. She personally doesn't really recall how they met exactly but the story her mother told her was that she was a servant in a nobleman's household in High Town and she met her father when he was in the middle of robbing it. Regardless, the elven woman fell for the dashing rogue and ran away with him. She was raised in Antiva until she was four, when her mother was told her father was lost at sea.
Returning to the Free Marches, her mother refused to live in Kirkwall and subject her daughter to living in the Alienage. Rather they settled in a small rather remote village where Daneryse would be less likely to be subject to prejudices because of her lineage. Life wasn't easy. Money was a matter of serious concern. To support her mother, who was growing weaker since leaving Antiva, Daneryse became a pickpocket who would steal from travellers on the road.
When she was 8, her mother finally succumbed to her illness, and so Daneryse was left to fend for herself. Living like a street urchin for most her life, and sticking to the wilderness when she could, she stole to survive. One day she attempted to steal from a man who was headed for Ferelden. She didn't realize he was quite the expert thief as well as a Grey Warden. He caught her before she succeded. Impressed by her spirit and skill, he took her in and raised her as his own.
The man, who she called Wallace, was a former pirate who became a Grey Warden. He knew Daneryse's father from a long time ago, and so he felt he owed it to him to look after her. He never told her this of course. Over the years, Daneryse learned every trick in the book as a thief and duelist. Wallace died in Ostagar before the Hero of Ferelden had defeated the Archdemon.
Disillusioned after his death, Daneryse left Ferelden and took up a life as an outlaw. Known as the Black Fox, the bounty on her head was rather high. For a few years she enjoyed the freedom, however she was met by Grey Wardens who were rebuilding the order in Ferelden after the end of the Blight. In return for granting her amnesty for her past actions, she was inducted into the Order as a Grey Warden herself.
