While the stone itself is known as a slightly softer gemstone, Vesper himself looks like he was chiselled from granite; toned and highly muscular, Vesper can and has been mistaken for a statue of rock if standing perfectly still amongst humans. Broad shoulders, large hands and proportionate to a fault, Vesper looks almost too good to be true; but then again, it has a lot to do with the stone that he embodies.

Vesper is, as with all full gems, a physical representation of the Onyx. As such, his skin is a dark grey, almost gloss black with veins of white streaking through his entire body. Itโ€™s why his eyes are black, and why his hair is two toned. Unlike a lot of his other pure-bred companions, he can no longer change his eye or hair colour due to mood or anything, as the Onyx has decided that he has achieved enough perfection as is.

As his gemstone is, the Onyx is the ultimate in self mastery; because of this, Vesper is extrememly driven for achieving the ultimate perfection of the body, mind and soul. The problem is that this absolute desire for perfection has split his personality in half between the two parts of an onyx; his calm, calculated, almost statuesque black side, and his childish, hotheaded white side.

Vesperโ€™s black side is the one most people interact with on a daily basis, what the onyx originally destined him to become. As an elder and one of the Crystal Syndicate, Vesper is calm and collected, making rational decisions for the good of his kind and for all. He talks little, instead wishing to have his actions speak for themselves, hoping to lead by example for all those that wish to follow his example.

However, perfection cannot be attained, something the gemstones should have realized eons ago; Vesperโ€™s body and mind should have been at least an indication. Vesperโ€™s other side is that which makes him relatable, if not difficult. He becomes childish and excited by nearly anything that appeals to him, almost unable to be taken seriously by anybody, which is an odd sight for somebody so muscular. He becomes hotheaded and impatient, attempting to get everything he wishes to accomplish done immediately, no matter what has to be sacrificed or cut to ensure that it happens.

The one thing that both sides can agree on is his drive. Because of the innate abilities of the Onyx, Vesper cannot finish something until it achieves perfection in his eyes. He becomes visibly distraught if he is forced to quite something before he has finished it, to the point of breaking down in a fit of rage. Anybody that stands in his way for achieving either personal perfection or perfection in what he does not last long, as Vesper does not appreciate those that impede him.

So how does this affect why he leads those that strive for a cure? While his black side would rather just remove the entirety of humanity to achieve perfection the easy way, his white side violently reacted to the idea, believing that the destruction of a race was not achieving anything, instead just stopping a race from striving for their own perfection. So Vesper strives to remove the gemmed influence from humanity to repair the purity of both species.

Aura of Fate

While the name is slightly misleading, the onyx is the stone of self-mastery and healing. Vesperโ€™s ability is that he can accelerate the healing of those around him by expanding his barrier - all gems have the ability to create a bubble, but Vesperโ€™s is a bit different; instead of a bubble, Vesperโ€™s acts more like an aura that encompasses him. When it expands, the original barrier remains around him, but a second aura continues to stretch out to almost 4 times the size of the original. However, if he makes direct contact with another, it accelerates healing much more quickly than his barrier, as he is a living, breathing, healing unit. Some have complained that it is technically two powers, but really it is one (healing within a barrier) and the other is just augmenting his own power (barrier creation). You donโ€™t think he was admitted into the Crystal Syndicate for being like everybody else, do you?

Vesper was born of the Chalcedony, a relative of the Quartz family and one of the largest families of gemstones throughout the empires of Gems. However, Onyx was different; an Onyx hadnโ€™t been born for a few generations, due to its demand for perfection and absolute purity, making the odds low for him to be produced. However, once he was, his parents began to groom him for greatness. Onyx usually grew up to be master healers, so it was natural for them to expect greatness from the little newborn; even if he already felt the pressure within to constantly exceed expectations and strive for perfection.

Growing up the youngest of three still was difficult. His elders were a Bloodstone and a Moss Agate, and neither truly appreciated his arrival of fanfare and approval. Bloodstones had always been considered somewhat of a dirty Jasper, even though their healing ability was almost on par with an Onyx. Nevertheless, Onyx still felt happiness in the presence of his older siblings, as they were among the few that werenโ€™t adding to his pressure to become great.

Years went on, and the fake sibling love continued on even as Onyx became a member of the Crystal Syndicate and the leader in the section of healing and medicine as he warped throughout the universe protecting people. It wasnโ€™t long, however, that the beginning of the fall began, and who better to fall than those fed up with the popularity of their little brat. Numerous chalcedony, Bloodstone and Moss Agate included, began vying for more power until they became what their race despised; monsters with no thought and no reason, destroying that which they had created. It was left to Onyx to deal with many of his family and friends, and it was on that day that the white veins surfaced upon his skin, and his split personality began as he butchered his own.

Flash forward many years and many pseudonyms later (his most popular being Leila) and Leila and the Crystal Syndicate heard that many of their fallen gemstones had fallen to different planets. At first, nothing to be concerned about, until they found out that the souls of their fallen had bonded to the wildlife there. Immediately debates rang clear of the Syndicate on what to do with these abominations of their own. After not long, there seemed to be only one answer; eradication. Only problem was, Onyx - now Vesper - was split down the middle about the idea. His one half agreed, but his other, louder half stated that removing humans was no solution of perfection; similar to discarding an apple for having a blemish on it. If they had it in there power to simply cut out the blemish, why shouldnโ€™t they? As this was the side that won out in his mind, Vesper demanded that they search for a cure, becoming one of the more vocal for the search for a cure and becoming one of the leaders of the โ€˜rebellious faction.โ€™

That is all to Vesperโ€™s tale, as he warped to earth to find enough humans infected to study and hopefully find a fix. He went alone, for there was no need; the only cause for concern would be the purebreds that had abandoned their homeland for this place.
