Guardian of the Dragon Crystals
Yolzor is a little bit batty, having lived alone with just a few pets for company for nearly ten thousand years. He takes life and his duty as a wizard very seriously, but there is a gruff sense of humor hidden somewhere inside him.
Yolzor's most obvious piece of equipment is his cane. His legs are not very strong, and he leans on it all the time. More remarkably, he is the possessor of the Dragon Crystals, magic gems that contain within them the power of the extinct dragons of prehistoric Earth. In his laboratory he also keeps all manner of magical and technological apparatus. You never know what you will find when you dig through his cupboard. His only company is Owlmer, a sentient talking owl.
Yolzor was born into a tribe of Stone Age nomads. As a young man, he became the shaman of his tribe, and was a prodigal spellcaster.
One day, he and a group of hunters were stalking game when they came upon a slumbering dragon. The hunters suggested that they should attack the dragon--surely its meat would feed the tribe for days. However, Yolzor recommended that they leave the creature be, knowing that dragons were ancient and powerful beings who required respect.
As they discussed this, an army of monsters (whom Yolzor would only later learn were cannon fodder known as "putties.") emerged from nowhere. Just as suddenly, an old man in a robe appeared between the army and the dragon, and he attempted to fight them off with a strange sword.
The putties were weak, but the elderly stranger was, well, elderly, and was failing. Yolzor and the hunters jumped to his rescue and fought off the putties.
The grateful stranger introduced himself as the wizard Zordon. He explained that the dragon and its kin had been poisoned by an evil witch, Rita Repulsa, who wanted to use their magic to conquer the galaxy.
Yolzor and the unters, feeling sympathy for the plight of the dragon, asked how they could help. Zordon gave them each a machine he called a "morpher," which could tap into a mystical energy field, the Morphing Grid, and transform them into superhuman warriors. With the ability to morph, they could help Zordon save the dragons and the galaxy.
They accepted, and became the world's first Power Rangers. They fought back against the forces of Rita.
During their campaign, Zordon saw Yolzor's potential for wisdom and wizardry. He taught the shaman much of what he knew about the morphers, the Morphing Grid, and the dragons.
Eventually, they imprisoned Rita. However, in the final battle, Zordon was gravely wounded. He had to be sealed inside a stasis chamber to preserve his life.
The Power Rangers retired and returned to their lives--all except Yolzor. Zordon warned that there were other evil forces in the universe, and tasked Yolzor with protecting the power of the dragons from anyone who would try to steal it.
For ten thousand years Yolzor, his life prolonged by magic, has kept his oath to protect the dragon crystals. He resides now in a secret hidaway in the mountains.
