Introduction

[PRIVATE For Lewdug97 and Timothy]

In a world where the government knows that people with powers exist, a girl is released from the hospital after her first suicide attempt, and is forced into therapy in order to avoid more problems.

The government is reluctant to disclose people with powers as a fact to the common folk, and and has arranged for a system for those who are discovered.

Since powers mostly reveal themselves while they're still at a young age, it has been decided that this is the best way to get them the help they need, still while monitoring them closely in order to gain more information on the phenomena, and avoid a public disaster.

"Oh, well what are we going to do?" Lucy spoke back with a hint of sadness in her voice. "I feel way better now. Wait," Lucy fail to notice the absence of the voices. "They have gone!" Lucy let out a big cheer of hope

"Right I’m going to have to take you to Mr. Hanagen to get you checked." Lucy had shaken her head in disapproval. "It is just to make sure you are ok. Would you like your boyfriend to come too?" Lucy reacted straight away. "He's not my boyfriend! I mean I have nothing against it but he isn't." Lucy was shocked at the nurse’s assumption. "Well is he coming?" She replied with a bit of embarrassment. "Yeah, I suppose. If you want to." She turned to Anthony.

Lucy begun to drink her water as the nurse rubbed her back to comfit her. Lucy was a lot better now since the voices had gone. Her dreams from the past few years had come true and there was no moans and yells in her head.

He felt slightly saddened as he realized Lucy didn't know why the voices had suddenly disappeared, giving the nurse a slightly angry look while she wasn't watching. Someone had to tell her the truth, soon too if she was meant to do any kind of recovery. He watched in silence as the nurse spoke, only raising his eyebrow when the nurse assumed him to be her boyfriend.

"I'll come along. She's supposed to be in my care," he tried not to sound sarcastic at the last remark, but only barely succeeded.

"Ok, lets go." Lucy stood up with a slight stumble. The nurse also stood and led the way out of the doors and into the hallway. They had taken a left and then a right to enter the therapist’s room. Mr. Hanagen was the same therapist from earlier on in the day. The room was different from before, as a painting of a boat had gone off the walls.

"Lucy, what are you going here?" Mr. Hanagen asked her. "Lucy has had an accident in the lunch room. Some sort of panic attack." The nurse explained the situation to him carefully. "Sit down Lucy." he sat as he invited her to do the same. "Anthony would you please pass me the book over there called The Mind and More?" He pointed towards the book he had been reading earlier. "First of all, Lucy is you ok now?" He inquired. "Yes I’m fine. The voices are gone too! I've waited so long for this." The therapist sighed as she mentioned that she had waited to get rid of the voices.

Anthony followed dutifully as the nurse brought them along the hallways leading to the office they'd left earlier. In the corner, the deck-carrying man from earlier was still shuffling his cards, giving him a harsh glare as they walked past, but he paid him little attention as he assumed the man simply carried too much of a grudge. He remained quiet as they entered the office, only giving the therapist a slight nod before leaning on a nearby wall, as the others talked for a bit, not even noticing the missing painting, as he'd only given the room a fleeting look the first time.

When asked to find a certain book, he walked over and found it on his desk, giving it a glance before handing it to Mr. Hanagen.

"Here you go," he said, curious as to what the therapist was going to do with it.

As he flicked though the book Mr. Hanagen glanced over towards Anthony and the nurse. "Would you mind leaving me and Lucy? I need to speak to her in private." Lucy didn't like the sound of his voice as he asked them to leave. "But, why?" Lucy asked back towards her therapist.

"I am afraid they can not be here when I tell you this information. You will be able to join them when we are done. I will not be long." The nurse walked towards the door as he explained the need for their absence.

Anthony nodded and left with the nurse, giving her a small "thank you," before she disappeared down the hallway, for helping out. He realized that her absence would mean that the voices would soon return to Lucy, and felt slightly disappointed at the thought. Though he wasn't an incredibly sympathic person, it was still a cruel thing for a sixteen year old to suffer from such things, but then he supposed that the world wasn't exactly a very fair place.

Leaning against the wall outside, he wondered if he just ought to leave - do something else for a while. It wasn't as if they needed him in there, though he might be needed to talk to Lucy afterwards if the therapist was planning to explain the situation for her. Anthony sighed, knocking the back of his head into the wall behind him. Why me, he complained mentally.

"Lucy, i have to tell you something that could be really shocking for you. Just lay back and get comfortable. You can't tell anyone outside the hospital what I am about to tell you." Lucy raised an eyebrow as she laid back and concentrated on his voice. "Throughout the world there are many people who are different. These people have special powers and can do remarkable things. This hospital was founded to help these people when the go out of control." Lucy was shocked by this information. "You too have a power. It is the cause of your 'voices'. I believe that you have the power to read minds. This is why you hear the voices. They are simply people’s thoughts that your brain is taking in without you telling it to do so. The voices are not gone, however we can treat you and teach you to use your power. I think this will get rid of the voices for good."

Lucy had just taken in so much information that she almost couldn't believe it. "So, Anthony?" The question was cut short by her therapist. "Yes, he too has a power." Lucy really was surprised by this information. "Can I go and think about it? I mean it's a lot to take in." Lucy asked. "Yes you may leave." Mr. Hanagen signalled towards the door. Lucy raced towards the door and flung it open. "Anthony?" Lucy had a puzzled face as she gazed towards him.

There were cracks in the door in front of him. Anthony had done an attempt to count them while he waited for things to proceed inside with the therapist and Lucy. Forty-two, forty-three.

"Boring," he noted lowly, shifting on his position, leaned against the wall opposite to the door, staring at his feet to see if they had anything more interesting to offer. The door flew open to reveal Lucy's face. She looked slightly distressed and confused, but as Anthony had no way of knowing what she'd been told he only looked up from the floor at the mention of his name.

"Hey," he said. "You feeling better?"

Lucy was surprised that Anthony didn't seem to know what she had just been told. As she walked out of the doorway she shut the door on her therapist. She glanced at his eyes only to quickly look away. "Why didn't you tell me? Did you not think i had a right to know that I am some kind of freak?" Lucy had a tear run down her face as she looked down at the floor. She couldn't look at Anthony not now after she had called him and indeed herself a freaks. She couldn't bear to think about what she was.

The voices were back in her head as she was warned this did not faze her. The voices were quiet but slowly gaining in noise levels. Many different tones but she could make out certain phrases better than she had previously been able too. "Stupid powers..." She heard more, "Lucy could of been so much better. If only this hadn't happened to..." This was the therapist’s voice. Her 'power' was now clearer to her and it was easier to understand the prospect of being different.

It was easy to tell by her facial expression that she knew. He wanted to say something but was cut off, just as he decided to open his mouth, as she began her emotional rant. Clenching his jaw, he concentrated on not getting angry at her accusations towards him, as if this was somehow all his fault - calling the both of them freaks in the process.

"And why should it be my responsibility?" he asked, a bit more hotly than he'd intended. "Why should have to be the one to suddenly change your life after what you tried to do? Huh? Do you think it's any easier for anyone else here? And even if it for some reason had to be down to me, what the hell would I say? 'Sorry, love, your whole life has been a lie and you most likely have to spend the rest of it lying your arse off if you want to survive, cheerio'?"

He stopped himself from going further, leaning against the wall again as he tried to become calm, staring at his shoes as he'd done before Lucy came back. "You're not some kind of special snowflake, the world just sucks."

With this, he pushed away from the wall and made his way down the hallway with quick and long steps. His plan had originally been to slow down as soon as he rounded the corner, but when he did, he suddenly found himself staring at his bedroom wall.

"I suppose it's not the worst time for a power to kick in," he muttered, rubbing his eyes as he sat down on the bed.

Lucy was devastated and scared. She had no idea that, by doing what she had; it would of caused him to completely flip. Why had she done this? Why was she chosen to be this? As Lucy leaned back against the wall, beside the door she had just leaped out of, she began to regret her previous rant. She slipped down the wall and began to weep heavily. It was so load that she imagined half of the hospital hearing her.

No one was there in her time of need. No one was there to comfit her and to help her. Not even the therapist who seemed to be oblivious to her sorrow. She felt so alone in her own world of pain. As she was alone the voices seemed louder as they filled her head with words. "Why?" was a common word as the hospital was full of people wondering why they were not just normal. Lucy understood the pain everyone was going through now. "What is going..." Lucy wanted to know exactly this, what was going on?

Lucy had now stopped crying, only because there was no tears left. In such a short space of time she had cried more than ever. This was a dark time.

Stupid, naïve, stupid.

Anthony wasn't going back to apologize. No siree.

Still seated on his bed, he watched the door of his room as if he was hoping for it to spontaneously combust. Sometimes he wondered why, with his destructive nature, he'd been gifted the power of teleportation instead of something like fire control or telekinesis. It would have been easier to express anger that way.

Even so, he had other means. He snuck his hand beneath his bed, fishing out a bottle of vodka he'd managed to sneak along during his last outing. True, this would be the second night in a row, but his mind had taken worse things. A small pill glass made a makeshift shot, and though he was void of lime, it would have to do.

"Cheers," he muttered.

The door clicked behind Lucy. On that sound she jumped to her feet and began to sprint down the corridor in the direction that Anthony had left. It was weird but she expected him to be there waiting. Ready to forgive her for what she said. Anthony was not there.

"Anthony?" She ran around another corner as she continued to search for him. She looked around every corner she passed as she walked towards the lunch hall. Not stopping to apologise to the people that she bumped into on her way. As she stood outside the hall the voices bellowed in her ear. She decided that to go in was not the best idea that she had come up with so she spun round and lead herself out of the building. She ran towards the ornate fountain she had remembered from before. The fountain no longer seemed sweet and instead it filed her head with the feeling of sadness. Tears seemed to be chased out of her eyes by the water from the fountain. She sat on the rim and continued to display her sorrow.

Anthony didn't know how much time passed before something happened. A loud knock on his door brought him back from a quite nice daydream, and he noticed the room was already swimming, as he drunkenly demanded to know what the stranger wanted.

"For you to get your head out of your arse and apologize," a familiar voice said, albeit rather crudely.

"You're not the boss of me," Anthony mumbled childishly. There was a sound, a lot like a hum, from the other side of the door, indicating that the man wholeheartedly disagreed.

"I gave you this mission in the faith that you would do your best to follow through, Mr. Whittaker," said the man. "I would hate to be disappointed. Now go and apologize." Steps leading away from the door slowly faded as the person made his way down the hall. Sighing, Anthony hid the remains of his bottle beneath the bed again, staggering outside. Inhaling deeply, he put on his best sober walk, and spent a good fifteen minutes searching before he found Lucy by the fountain.

Putting his hands in his pockets, the boy hesitated, though he walked forward. "I'm sorry." He said, only with a slight slur. "I shouldn't 'ave yelled."

Lucy sat with her head still facing the floor. When she heard Anthony's voice her eyes opened wide as she sniffed to clear her nostrils. "No, it was my fault. I didn't know how to take it. Why is it so complicated?" Lucy moaned.

She looked up towards Anthony, almost blinded by the sun that was behind him, before she quickly looked back down to her feet. Why was it so hard for her to just be normal? Then it struck her. If Anthony had a power, than what was it? This however did not seem to important right now as she was focusing on what she had just been told. It was her life not his that she should be worried about.

Anthony giggled, but regained his composure. He slumped down beside her on the edge of the fountain, taking his hat off and stroking a hand through his hair as he glanced upwards towards the sun. It felt nice and warm, though it might have been the vodka.

"It's not as if they really teach us how to deal with this at school," he answered, even if he supposed Lucy was asking a rhetorical question. "And to be honest, you've been taking this a good deal better than most. Guy I knew called Andrew had the power to control fire, burned down the activity room when he realized why he was really here," Anthony giggled again. "That was a fun day."

"What is wrong with you?" Lucy felt like Anthony was acting out of character. "Are you…” Lucy wasn't sure if she could finish off the sentence. She did however force herself to do so. "Drunk?" Her farther was drunk on a regular basis and came home to drink even more. When he was home he would shout and rant as he watched the TV.

"If you are then..." She had absolutely no idea how to finish the sentence. She did not force the clause out of her mouth. She really hoped that he hadn't been drinking.

"Not that drunk," Anthony answered simply, starting to lean back towards the fountain before a small spray of water reminded him there was nothing to lean into. "Like I said - you're dealing with it much better than most. Including me, quite obviously."

"So you are drunk!" Lucy was shocked yet not disgusted. "Well, I suppose everyone needs a way to un-wind. I sadly haven't found one." Lucy let out a great sigh as she listened out for Anthony's voice in her head. Nothing that she could make out seemed to be him. There were many slurry voices in her head but none stud out to be his. "So what was it? The drink I mean."

Anthony burst out laughing at Lucy's shock, rubbing his forehead as the chuckles rippled through him. The innocence at the words was extremely amusing, and in all honesty it simply felt good to forget about his troubles and rejoice at the idiocy of the world. When she asked what he'd been drinking, he shrugged.

"A bit of vodka, nothing major. Wish I had some lime to go with it, but nothing's perfect."

He sighed, as the laughter had died, and looked up towards the sun again, despite the pain as the light blinded him. He wasn't sure how long had passed since he'd retreated to his own room, but it a certainly been a few hours since he and Lucy had taken their first walk through the garden.

"Well, we should certainly find some way for you to 'unwind', if you ask me," Anthony declared. "If not, you'll go insane."

"How about some of that vodka? Seems strong." Lucy had never drunk before. Her farther was getting drunk constantly; she never even touched the stuff. She had wondered for a while what the feeling of alcohol running down your thought was like. "Please?" Lucy batted her eyelids in order to seduce him into letting her have some of his vodka.

His vodka must have been strong. He was pretty hammered at the time. Maybe he just drunk the whole bottle, seemed that way. She hoped that she could be in a happy place just like he was and just forget about all she had just been told.

"Yeah, how old are you, sixteen?" he narrowed his eyes at her, gingerly supporting his elbows on his knees. "I may be a despicable freak of a human being, but I'm not supplying suicidal underaged teenagers with drinks."

Anthony shook his head to clear his mind, rubbing his palms together. His mind congratulated him on an adult and reasonable decision, and he mentally vowed to stick by it. Lucy had many troubles, but there was no need to drag her down into his own misery - after all, she wasn't as near the edge of a complete breakdown as he found himself to be. There was still hope.

"Besides, there has to be better ways to get your minds off of things than turning you into an alcoholic. Like, chess or something, I don't know."

"No, I'm 18. Seriously!" Lucy lied right to his face in order to get at the alcohol. "I am sure i can handle it. Please?" Lucy tried her best to look as cute as possible. She simply chose to ignore her label as suicidal, as he was clearly drunk. It was all going according to plan right now.

The voices continued but were not really important to her right now. This was her time with Anthony and her chance to get at some Vodka. She looked back over to him as she wondered what his answer would be.

"Yeah, yeah, sure." Anthony stopped listening. His thoughts were swimming, incoherently, and he'd long forgotten where he'd even left the remainders of the vodka he'd been drinking. Whatever Lucy's real age was, and she certainly didn't look eighteen, she would have to find a different way to unwind. She wasn't getting his vodka - he'd had enough trouble justing getting that here.

"I feel like a shellfish." he mumbled.

"A shellfish?" Lucy laughed at his little mumble. "You really are drunk. I don't even think there is any vodka left. Maybe i should tell someone?" Lucy pondered on it for a moment, but soon realised that she wouldn't exactly be in his good books if she did. It seemed to her that being in his good books was a good idea. "So what shall we do with a drunken Anthony?" She giggled slightly at her reference to an old sailors song.
