Someone else might have asked if they were being too pushy about the sword training, but it was not in the nature of Calliope to consider that she might be pushy. Especially not about swords or assassins. "Is there anything else I can do to help?"
Calliope might have been obtuse in general, but even she perceived that Olivia had her mind made up to be as independent as possible. She probably wouldn't ask for further help. Even if she needed it, thought Calliope to herself. "That's good, I'm glad," she said, smiling.
She nodded, as princess-like as possible, and sat at a table, rubbing her temples with two fingeres.
Calliope went back to cleaning her glasses. After a while, a mailman wearing a baseball cap came into the bar. Calliope recognized him as the mailman that had been delivering to her a lot lately. She took the envelope from him - it was from the Bureau. Inwardly, she let out a long, exaggerated sigh. The mailman nodded and left, although he spent a long moment looking at Olivia.
"Which guy? That mailman?" Calliope frowned. "Mailmen are weird, as a rule, even for purgatory. I wouldn't worry about it."
"It sounds like if you go home, the only thing that will greet you is a knife to the back," said Calliope in a matter-of-fact tone.
Olivia said nothing.She casually extended a claw from her left forefinger and slit her wrist. "don't you think blood's beautiful?"
"Not really. I think poems are beautiful. I think swords are beautiful. I think certain aliens are beautiful."
Calliope was good at many things, but reassuring depressed teenage girls was not one of them. "Wait for your father's signal. Purgatory may grow on you." She opened her letter, which informed her that another soul murder had been committed. That made fifteen known murders. And not of an inkling of a clue to who was behind it. "I need to investigate all the butlers," said Calliope aloud.
"Because the butler always did it," said Calliope, as if it were obvious. "You should be careful, Olivia. There have been a lot of murders lately. More than normal."
If Olivia was being sarcastic, it flew right over Calliope's head. "I know, right? I haven't had to live in fear for a long time...Definitely tell me if you see anything strange, Olivia. I am investigating this."
