Full Name:
Edward Adam Wartheimer | "It's a fine name, I know. My parents hoped that I would achieve some sort of greatness as I grow up so they basically took the best names they could think of and plastered them onto my forehead. Not that I'm complaining- I think that my name is relatively great."
Preferred Name:
Eddie | Ed | Edward
"I mean, everyone just slowly started to...like, come up with different names for me, if you get what I mean. It just...they all, like, just developed out of nowhere and I don't really care, you know?"
Ethnicity:
25% Polish | 25% American | 50% British
"My grandfather was an escapee from Poland during World War Two. His family- all Jewish, by the way- had quite a bit of luck on their side and had fled from Poland before the war started. There, my grandfather met my grandmother and bam! My father was born. After two decades or so, my father and my mother met at University. She had fled from her up-tight rich family and he had fulfilled his job as a prodigy within the household. They got married, and then I was born. Pretty nice, huh?"
Birth Date:
December 21st, 1995
Age:
19
Sexuality:
Bisexual | ā€œI can promise you that I am heterosexual. Nothingā€™s happening between me and anyone- itā€™s the truth, I swear to God.ā€
Blood Type:
AB negative | ā€œMomā€™s an A and dadā€™s a B. Nice combination working there, isnā€™t it?ā€

APPEARANCE

Image
Image

Height:
186cm | 6ā€™1
Distinguishing Marks:
- Tattoos | It can be considered that Edward sort of ā€œcollectsā€ tattoos. Wherever he travels, he makes sure to scout out a good tattooist in the area to add another tattoo onto his growing collection. His first tattoo was a simple one at New York that had really sparked Edwardā€™s interest in more tattoos. Edward got his next tattoo during a visit to London, during which he got a new tattoo at the base of his back as a tribute to his love to anything Tolkien. But that had not been enough of a tribute, so when Edward had later went to Berlin, he commissioned a tattooist to tattoo a large piece on his back. By then, his parents had set their feet down, claiming that Edward had enough tattoos to go around- but (as if to just spite them), Edward had gotten his fourth tattoo done while on a private trip to Shanghai, China. Currently, Edward is thinking about getting a new tattoo on his lower left hip as a reminder that life constantly has its ways around people.
- Scars | Edward has multiple scars dotted all over his body from rugby practice, training and the like. Getting into fights and a small motorcycle accident has left Edward with a few cuts on his arms and a rather long gash on his leg from each incident respectively.
Physical Appearance:
Edwards tends to be extremely clean in appearance. Pristine and pale, many people have asked Edward if he has ever thought of going into the modeling industry or if he was a model already. With how his hair rarely ever deviates from its constantly slightly messy (yet obviously left like that) look to his meticulous choice in clothing, itā€™s hard to question why people have asked him these sorts of questions. For his hair, Edward tends to just wake up and run a hand right through it with a bit of gel, ruffling it up well enough so that thereā€™s a small puff to his hair. Sometimes- though very rare- Edward allows his normal curls to take over, allowing it to frizz over with a bit of control from a bit of gel. While playing sports or working out, Edward tends to slick his hair back due to his habit of running his hand back through his hair, pressing it against his scalp. Funnily enough, even though Edward spends most of his time outdoors, he has not been able to shake off his pale white complexion. His light brown hair tends to frame his face in the exact correct shape, bringing out the depths of his pale blue eyes that many people so adore.
As per to his clothes, whenever he is not training, in session, or at a game, Edward loves to wear semi formal clothes. A single colored t-shirt tends to be his way to go along with a pair of jeans and, if cold, a loose cardigan or jacket to keep him warm. Edward tends to constantly try and be up to date with most trends in fashion, as the changes in styles tends to intrigue him for a weird reason. Only for training sessions can one see Edward wear sweatpants and loose shirts (or even short pants when heā€™s playing soccer). Most of his clothes tend to be blue, red or grey, and a scarf tends to deck out every outfit Edward dons during the fall and winter days.

What is inside

Personality:
Strong | Determined | Team Player | Brash | Gregarious | Immature
Edward is what most would think when they are asked what a ā€œJockā€ is like, though he tends to not associate himself with the term. Gergarious and socially adept, Edward is basically friends with everyone at school. Extremely kind and open-minded, rarely has he ever been denied an act of friendship while meeting new people. At times he may seem intimidating, what with how he tends to push again and again to make an acquaintance, but itā€™s easy to see that Edward is actually an extremely cheerful young child inside. This is probably why many people are drawn to him. Edward has a sort of immaturity that shines through in his smiles, that hover in the depths of his eyes- a curiosity and unbound happiness that Edward has not lost just yet. But this innocence doesnā€™t indicate that Edward is rubbish at school (to the contrary, he gets average-and-above grades), it does, however, mean that Edward is rather rubbish when it comes to love and relationships. In situations of close intimacy, Edward rarely ever knows what to do or can really understand what his partners expect out of him. It is common for Edward to slowly draw away until his partners break up with him, as he turns his back on them while his smile stays on his no turned away face. Though Edward has tried to tackle this problem for a while, the solution still seems too far for his mind to be able to grasp.
However, Edward has always been strong and determined in other facets of life. He has pulled through as a weak child to become one of the best athletes at school; his grades were subpar but a year ago, but after a serious talk with his parents, he managed to pull out a straight B average. No one would ever question Edward when he puts his eyes on a goal, as he rarely ever deviates from his plans once he does. The amount of determination Edward has to complete self-set goals is astronomical, and no one has ever heard him ever say the words ā€œI give upā€. Of course, this doesnā€™t mean that Edward aces everything he does- rather, he tends to be quite rubbish at studying, or, well, basically anything outside of athletics and socializing (he even sucks at drinking). But Edward is made of strong heart and steel-like resolve, and no matter what sort of obstacle comes his way; Edward tends to try his best to become even better than before.
From time to time, though, his emotions tend to drag Edward back away from improvement. His anger tends to get him into a lot of trouble, as he has fallen for the taunts of strangers and other athletes alike which almost ended up in a few bans from tournaments. He can be extremely easy to sadden and lighten up all the same, as he hangs on the words of other people with a near reverent sort of behavior. But as much as other people can manipulate Edward, he can manipulate them back as well, fitting them into his team of friends or acquaintances for later use and benefits.
Role:
The Jock
Skills:
- Sociable | Edward is something most would call a ā€œsocial butterflyā€. Many people crowd around him not only due to his innate good soul, but also because of his charismatic personality. It isnā€™t hard for Edward at all to walk up to a stranger with a large childish smile on his face, hand out for a handshake to ask for their number. Like this, Edward has slowly gained himself a large social network that he can call up whenever needs be.
- Athleticism | Strong, fast and nimble, Edward is everything a sportsman needs to be. His agility is not as up to par as his strength, obviously, but Edward is still one of the fastest runners in school. Itā€™s not like Edwardā€™s skills are restricted to the soccer, rugby fields or tennis courts or track fields- no. Even though Edward can be slow at times, he is definitely capable of using his already developing set of skills to help him survive wherever he goes.
- Leadership | It is pretty obvious that Edward was ā€œborn to leadā€, or something along those lines. But his leadership is only there due to his charisma, not because of his smarts or great ideas, or anything of the like. Rather, Edward can only be a figurehead as he can never come up with great, ingenious ideas that most others can. A source of protection, a promise for survival, a vow for success- those are all Edward can ever give to the people following behind him (unless theyā€™re on a sports field).

What is in the Past

Image
Relationship Status:
- Delaney J. Ren | Dating | Edward is currently dating Delaney, one of the most popular girls from their high school. He adores her and tries to lavish as much attention he can on the girl, though his affections have been growing gradually more and more sparse. But he still does love Delaney- to an extent-, itā€™s just that Edward isnā€™t exactly sure if his affection really can equate to love anymore.
- Oliver James | Secretly dating | TBA
Family and Friends:
- Father | James Wartheimer | The leader of a large conglomerate business, James Wartheimer is a name that most people know. His own relationship with his children and wife are near to none, as Mr. Wartheimer rarely ever heads home any longer. A large funder of the Network, Wartheimerā€™s power is near to surpassing the governments, even, and many have their eyes trained on the back of his head. Edward dislikes his father with a passion due to how little time the man has spent with his family, and really would not like to be associated with Wartheimer, co. at all.
- Mother | Olivia R. Wartheimer | Wife to one of the most powerful men on earth, Olivia Wartheimer has been on many lists of ā€œworldā€™s most happy womenā€ on many different magazines. But the truth is much more different than the reality that is sold to the general populace. Sad, bitter and depressed, Olivia Wartheimer tends to throw all of her attention onto her kids, trying to drag her head away from the thought of how her husband rarely comes home. Always the strict parent in Edwardā€™s life, he adores his mother for all she has done for him throughout his childhood and when he had grown up a bit more. The both think of each other more so as friends (and tutor to pupil) rather than mother to son.
Known Languages:
English, Mandarin, German
- Edward is fluent in English, obviously, and Mandarin. He was forced to learn the latter by his father whom had asked a close Chinese friend to teach the then young Edward the language. During those short, sparse classes, Edward had fallen in love with the different language and had pursued an education in the language himself afterwards. Compared to his mastery in the other two languages, Edward is horrid at German and can only speak a few words here and there.
HISTORY
Edward was born the only son to the massively rich Wartheimer couple. His birth had been marked with much controversy, a few murder attempts, and the lack of care from his father. Brought up in a secluded area, Edward was homeschooled till he was nearing high school. His mother made sure that all of his needs were accounted for and that he would be able to learn anything and everything she thought was useful. Needless to say, it didnā€™t take long for her to realize Edward was more proficient in sports than in studying, at which point she enrolled him into many different classes for multiple different sports. Because of his mother, Edward spent most of his childhood playing tennis, rugby, soccer, badminton, track and field, horse riding, rather than in closed off classrooms listening to a teacher drone on and on from a textbook. But in the end, his mother had decided that Edward needed to go out into the world after much prompting and persuasion from Edwardā€™s side. Soon, he was transferred into a lesser known, elite schools in which she paid a hefty amount of money to ensure his safety. There, he went through girlfriend after girlfriend, course after course until he finally settled down into the top social circles within the entire school body. Edward had never thought that he would experience any sort of hardship due to his parentsā€™ influence across the globe- but it seems as if his assumption is going to be shattered very soon in the near future.

So begins...

Day One

Somehow, she just knew. She knew that the bus had been crushed. She knew that Adrien was most likely seriously injured. Tallia just knew. When Ollie picked up her sister and brought her inside, she walked over to Adrien and did her best to get him inside the doors. She leaned him against the wall so he wouldn't-as Carter had said- "choke on his own spit". She didn't feel right about leaving him, but walked a bit farther in until she found the clearanced blankets. Carefully, she put a blanket over his unconscious form, then she settled one over her sister. "Please be okay," she whispered to Jen.

Her mind spun at a million miles an hour as she came up with ideas. "Anything perishable," she whispered to herself. "We need to get anything perishable together!" she exclaimed, snapping her fingers.

Delaney stared blankly after Edward's retreating back as he went out again. "Where else would I go?" she murmured to no one in particular. Impassiveness was written all over her face, and she did not react for the next fifteen minutes or so, just sitting quietly in a corner, collecting herself.

The commotion around her slowly became clearer, and as the world came into focus Delaney managed to push herself upright, bracing her hands on the floor. Getting to her feet, she wandered around the main area where mostly everyone was, pausing to check on Adrien. To her relief, she found that she still had her bottle in her backpack, full of water, which she handed to him. "Take it easy, Adrien. Breathe." She waited for a moment to make sure he was alright, then moved on to Jen.

Since Jen was still unconscious, Delaney comforted herself with smoothing the girl's dark hair back, making her look more peaceful, as if she was just sleeping. She checked Jen's dressed wounds, and glided on.

"We need to get anything perishable together!" Tallia's voice carried, clear and determined, over to Delaney. She moved to stand by Tallia. "We can't take the perishables out of the freezer," she commented. "We could move them to one freezer, all together. That is..." and here her voice faltered, the unthinkable creeping into her thoughts, "if we're planning to stay here indefinitely."

The first thing she noticed was the searing pain throughout her body. She felt as if she was hit by a bus. In actuality that was closer to the truth than she had realized. The last thing she remembered was a sudden jolt in the bus, and then black. What the hell had happened?

Her morning had started as normal as the rest of them. Waking up regrettably, stumbling over to her computer to check her blog - as well as her Skype to check for messages from her internet friends. She had no time to really reply to any of the fan mail she had received on her blog where she posted drawings, digital art, and various things of her favorite games. She dressed in her usual attire, some sort of skinny jeans with a overly large sweater. Jen always had some sort of so called "geeky" jewelry, today it was just a Doctor Who ring and earrings, with a sword necklace.

There was no tell tale sign that this would happen. No raven flying over head, no spilling of salt, nothing. Nada. Zip.

Slowly her dark eyes opened to reveal an unusual setting. Jen was unsure of where she was. Her vision was blurry and all things looked to be in doubles at the moment. Her head was throbbing, heavy like she couldn't pick it up. The first thing to her disheveled mind was her twin sister, Tallia.
"Tall..." she mumbled, trying to move her head to the side in hopes to see her sister. She saw familiar shoes that she knew belonged to her sister in the corner of her eye, and moved her head to that side. Weakly she took her arm from the blanket and had it fall on her shoe.
"The hell happened?" Jen questioned, her voice being as weak as her body. Confused. That was a good word to use at the moment. There were others around, she could hear them. Who exactly, she didn't know.

Virgis sighed with relief once people got up. He looked at what he had. Well, Adrien's head was losing blood...
Virgis grabbed a roll of gauze and kneeled by Adrien. Virgis said, "Wow.. that's lots of blood... this might hurt a bit..." Virgis started trying to wrap the gauze around adrien's head, because he had the most blood there. then he handed Adrien the pain killers, and an ice pack.

So, after that was done Virgis went over to Jen with the blanket. "Here. You're going to need this." Deciding that he'd best just get out of everyone's way now, he just walked away. He needed a break from all of this. He couldn't stop thinking about everyone dying. Surely this was on the news. The news... He remembered some stories recently. Norad spill, gang war, nyan cat revamp. What the heck was nyan cat? Anyways Virgis expected all of those stories to be squashed.

He went to the media and electronics department and look through the tabs. None connected. That was not reassuring. Then he found one of the t.v.'s and messed around with it, turned it on, and switched to the news...

The group was well into the lobby to be safe from the hail impaling everything else outside, at least for now that was. If paid attention to closely and silent, the sound of the golf ball sized hail pellets could be heard beating on the roof, the walls, the sidewalks and anything else that stood in its path just outside the glass doors. Those thin glass doors are the only thing that separated the group and their immanent doom. They needed to get to real safety otherwise they'd end up like the kids on the bus.

Things were starting to calm down, at least in Carter's head it was. It was starting to hit him that his sister was dead. Gone. Forever. He was supposed to protect her and he failed. He didn't even know it was her at first. He tried to hard to remember what she had on that morning but his mind wouldn't focus. How could he not remember what his own sister had walked out of the house wearing this morning?

The teenager had sat himself down against a pillar in the lobby. He ducked his face into his hands and the image of his sisters swollen face and broken body flashed across his eyelids. He held onto his tears. He looked back up at the small group in front of him and took a deep breath and let it out. His stomach grumbled simultaneously.

Carter knew that their time was limited. Tallia was right though. If they planned to stay here more than a fee hours it was time to crack open the perishables and start a feast. With his knees against his chest and his arms dangling over his knees Carter looked at Tallia. "She's right. We need to get the perishables. If not eat them then stick them somewhere cold enough to last us however long we're stuck in this shithole for."

Carter had no intention to take a leadership position here but someone had to do it and he sure as hell didn't want that Adrien guy doing it. Besides, when it came to being a leader, Carter was a bit more gentle about it than Adrien seemed to be. He stood to his feet, "Edward, and Delaney, come with me. We'll go look for food. Tallia and Oliver, you two stay here and tend to the injured. Virgis, you look for anymore medical instruments or possibly a phone. We need to find a way out of here." Carter took off walking, hoping people would move in the way he had hoped, but he didn't want to turn around and get bombarded with rejection. He was going to do what he had to to get out, if no one wanted to follow than that was their problem. Carter was getting out alive.

Virgis wasn't paying attention. He was looking at the t.v. Their town wasn't on the news... The storm was messing with the connection. So for now he'd only get parts of the story. He could tell it was on a loop... It wasn't like the storm was getting better so Virgis decided he would stay until he could figure out at least part of the message. He heard Colorado... Maybe some other city? Then he heard the voice get urgent. He heard NORAD spill... Compounds? Dangerous... Colorado again... NORAD bio-something... Then he heard the magic words even though it was all scary. Quarintine. Colorado. Stay indoors.

Virgis just stared at the screen. He wanted to scream. Hadn't they been through enough! Hadn't he been through enough? They just lost all of their friends, some of them were bruised badly, coughing up blood, and they were all traumatized... Virgis wasn't traumatized because he was used to things like that... Though... This was ridiculous. He couldn't get a break! NORAD SPILL! A NORAD SPILL! BIO-CRAP! Now they had to board up the doors, windows, and not mourn the people they just lost. Virgis probably would've smashed the t.v. with a baseball bat if he didn't have to warn the others.........

So he sat up with a pale look on his face, trying to compose whatever he had left. He was good at that, he did it every day. he started walking over to the group and then jogging. "GUYS! There was a NORAD bio spill or something, I saw it on the t.v. We have to get the windows and doors open! There's like some kind of chemical mushroom cloud or explosion I don't know something is coming! The whole state is in quarantine! We need tape, staples, wood, plasters, anything!"
Virgis is full on panic mode for now. They could all die from chemicals. Or they could just like make him get cancer or something. Whatever it is they are dangerous.

Delaney turned at the sound of her voice. "Oh, uh, right. I'll just go... join Carter then," she mumbled apologetically to Tallia, turning away. She didn't see Edward, but hurried over to Carter anyway, skipping a little as she tried to keep up with his pace.

"So this is really something, huh?" she asked, trying to remain cheerful and bright, like people expected her to be. "I mean, this is totally crazy. We've never had hail this bad. And for that to happen... oh my god. I'm so sorry." Delaney covered her mouth, remembering Carter's sister.

She remained quiet for the next five minutes, grabbing a nearby cart and loading it with food. There were lots of cans, she made sure to stock up on those, especially the fruit. A can opener misplaced on an empty shelf caught her eye, and it clattered to the bottom of the cart as well.

When they passed aisles filled with bottles of water, Delaney swept her arm carelessly past the shelves, letting the different brands fall into the cart. She held one out to Carter. "How're you feeling?" Her tone was quieter now. "Drink up - it'll make you feel better. We'll get you medical help later, I think Virgis is on that."

Then Virgis's yelling reached her. She glanced around nervously. "Damn. How - how did that happen? NORAD is supposed to be safe." Her voice shook, feet coming to a standstill as she tried to remember where exactly the doors and windows were.

At Carterā€™s beckoning, Edward had followed along behind the other two slowly after casting Adrien and the rest a worried glance, his back hunched as he chewed at the inside of his cheek. And though his own personal indifference to the other few surviving students worried Edward slightly, he could not let something else slide- the idea that so many of their friends had just died. It appalled him how calm most of the others were. It was as if they had just slid the deaths off of their minds as if nothing had happened- but then again, if they had kept the deaths on their mindā€¦no. Shaking his head, Edward cast the people behind a gaze of mistrust while following behind Carter and Delaney. He could not lie about being a bit disgruntled with how Carter was acting- something seemed off about his friend, especially with how fast he had recovered over his sisterā€™s death. But whom was Edward to judge? He could only send a prayer her way, hoping that the impact against the gravel had immediately stolen her last breath.
Edward sighed as he tried to shove the grim thoughts away, shaking his head as if the motion would fling the thoughts out of his mind. It didnā€™t. The only thing that the motion brought was a small, tiny sob that Edward tried to stomach down, his hands wiping roughly at his eyes to not allow the tears that hung precariously in his eyes to subside. Watching the other two, Edward felt a tiny pang of jealousy as Delaney tried to console Carter, his eyes glowering at their backs before he caught himself. He did not have the right to feel jealous, anyways- it was he whom was dating behind her back. Not Delaney. No; she was as pure as an angel, like how Edward had first found her. But even if he were to allow her to another guy he knew that it would not be Carter. Not the playboy, though he was Edwardā€™s friend- but the sound of the thunks on the ceiling dragged Edwardā€™s attention back to real life, looking up at the roof with a hopeful gaze that it would not cave in over their heads. Walking up, Edward ignored Delaney and patted Carter hard on his back, not saying anything as he gave him a grim gaze. That was the only consolation he would give- it was always the only consolation he ever gave.
ā€œIā€™m going to go and find some mode of communication with the outside world.ā€ He said, looking at Carter then at Delaney before turning away again. ā€œIā€™m sure that the Network is still up- Iā€™ll try and find something. Iā€™m sure there are phones in here since it looks like it was still in use just yesterday.ā€ Taking a few steps forward, he gave them both a cold look- a look that the old Edward Wartheimer would definitely not have on his face. Something had changed insdie of him as much as how the others had changed as well. ā€œIā€™ll be back soon.ā€ Immediately, Edward struck out without a second word, his eyes intently searching for a phone as he had lost his own in the tumble on the bus. But with the electricity mostly out in the mall, his only hope was to first find out if the power room was still able to operate. It was his last chance to try and see if he could wield the power of the Wartheimer conglomerate business to save the students he was stuck with. If only everything would just work out. He thought, quickly pacing through the multiple racks of food, his eyes clouded with worry as he made his way to the back of the mall. If onlyā€¦
But something told Edward that something was very, very wrong- and that they would be stuck here for an indefinite time. The bad feeling boiled in his guts as he finally located a "staff only" door, pushing it aside with a force to harsh. The "bang" resounded throughout the mall as Edward made his way in, his vision shaky as his breath as he passed through the changing room, the small offices, his eye searching for the sign that he had to find. Power room...power room...come on... His eyes flashing left and right, Edward let out a shaky breath as he finally found the room. Their salvation from being stranded in the middle of nowhere. But something caused Edward to hesitate as he made a motion to push open the door, a gut feeling pulling him back before he finally allowed his hand to land on the handle. He pushed it downwards. The door did not budge. "You're fucking kidding me." A growl left him as the usually calm Edward slammed his body against the door, trying to push it so that he could probably turn on the lights. Turn on the fridges, at least. But the door would not budge. He would have to find help. Rushing out of the staff-only area, Edward quickly let out a loud, "Carter! Get over here!" before rushing back in again, cursing under his breath as he glared vehemently at the inanimate door.

Carter walked alone for a few moments before Delaney joined him. She started talking about the bus and how crazy all this has been. Carter bowed his head and pursed his lips. She shortly realized what she just said and started quickly apologizing. "Yeah it's really crazy." He started with his head still down then picked it up to look at Delaney. "No. It's fine. I-I-I-" He was having trouble forming the words. There was a cry stuck in his throat just about to escape. Carter swallowed hard, attempting to hold back a breakdown that was just short of the surface.

There was a long five minutes of awkward silence. Delaney plopped a few supplies into the cart she was pushing and offered Carter a water. "How are you feeling?" Carter took the water from Delaney and took a large gulp. He shrugged as he pulled the bottle away from his mouth. "I don't know," Carter turned his attention to Delaney now. He looked in her eyes with a pain that was indescribable, a hurt that wasn't inevitable to hurt. "I was supposed to protect her Del. And I failed her." Carter turned his attention away again. He didn't want Delaney to see the tears escaping his ducts. Just then Edward patted on his back. The boys looked at each other without words. Carter knew there wasn't anything Edward could say to make him feel better, so he didn't. He didn't have to.

Edward took a few steps alongside his best friend and his girlfriend and excused himself to see if the Network was still up. He gave the two a cold glare before departing that left Carter with am uneasy churn in his gut. Carter looked back at Delaney to see if she had caught the look too. "Is Ed okay? I haven't had much of a chance to talk to him yet."

Carter peeked over his shoulder to see where Edward had gone but couldn't see much in the dark behind him. He dropped a couple of bags of chips in the cart. He walked ahead of Delaney a few steps and pulled a mini flashlight off a side rack. He rattled it to find that the flashlight came with no batteries. Before he could turn to look for batteries, Edward had called out for Carter.

"Stay here, don't move." Hr said to Delaney with his hands grabbing her shoulders. "I won't lose you too." He just barely shouted as he ran towards Edwards voice.

Carter jogged over to an open door that was labelled "staff only." He pushed open the door a little more and stood by his friend. He looked at the door and then at Edward. Carter assumed the door had been locked, otherwise Edward wouldn't have needed to call him. He propped his hands on his hips and exchanged glances between the door and his friend. "Pick the lock?"Carter proposed the idea to get the door open.

There was an awkwardness between the two friends. They haven't spoken since before the accident. He felt a coldness from Edward that he wasn't quite certain from where it originated. Perhaps Edward didn't know what to say to Carter because of his sisters death. Carter was doing his best to keep it off his mind but he knew that as soon as everything calmed down a little Carter would break. That's why he tried to stay occupied. The feeling of guilt that shadowed him was too much too handle for the situation they were in right now. But he had to pull through. He needed that sliver of hope that survivalists had. If he didn't have that, he wouldn't make it.

Adrien

Goosebumps exploded onto Adrien's skin. A biochemical spill. He began giggling, and the giggling became laughing, but no one was under any illusions. This was not the laugh of a happy man, but that of one accepting how utterly fucked he is. A maddened final plea to life; a desperate silent question of "You're joking, right?" in the hope of defying reality.

His lung was punctured. His rib was broken. He was a fountain of blood. And now he would be choking on whatever the government had concocted, intending to hurl it at Middle Easterners or Russians or whoever the hell else. And now he would be recieving premium tickets to the show.

And yet Adrien still laughed and laughed, and he laughed until he started choking, and only then did life slap him in the face and tell him to calm down and accept his fate like a man.

Unless...

This store was a major one, selling pretty much everything under the moon with the exception of guns. It had to have air filtration masks somewhere, right?

He waited to regain his breath, then spoke:

"If some chemical did leak, it's probably airborne. We need to get gas masks. Now. Barricading can come later."

"It's not your fault," Delaney murmured to Carter. "You couldn't have stopped the bus, or unbroken the window." Apparently these went unheard, however, as Edward popped into sight.

He didn't say much, but when he shot Delaney the coldest glare she'd ever seen in the time they'd been dating, she felt as though she'd been stabbed with an icicle. It was the only way to describe it - a shot of pain, thread through with rejection and anger. She could only stand, frozen to the spot, as Edward left.

"Is Ed okay? I haven't had much of a chance to talk to him yet."

Delaney snapped out of it, and looked at Carter. "Huh? Oh, uh, I guess... he brought me in here, I don't know." She turned away, biting her lip. Had she done something wrong? She tried to push the thought away by occupying herself, moving down the aisle, watching Carter drop items into the cart.

Then Edward called. Delaney nearly lost her balance when Carter's hands landed on her shoulders, unexpected. For the second time that day, she watched him go. "I'll be around."

She looked around, hearing her schoolmates' voices call and echo around her, trying to make sense of what was happening. A cool breeze ruffled her hair - and it struck her. She hurried back to the main area.

"It's not just the doors and windows! The vents, guys, there's air coming in from outside!"

ā€œPick the lock?ā€ Edward let out a sarcastic laugh as he shot a look at Carter to see if his friend was serious. It was apparent that he was. Sighing, Edward stood back up straight and leaned against the wall behind them, raising an eyebrow at Carter as he shrugged his shoulders to prepare for another battering against the stubbornly still door. ā€œI have learned how to play rugby, lacrosse, tennis, soccer and basketball,ā€ He started, a playful grin that didnā€™t reach his eyes crossing his face, ā€œbut Iā€™ve never taken any classes in lock picking.ā€ Turning sideways towards the door once more, Edward scrunched his face up as he rushed against it again, grunting as pain shot through his arm to no result once again. ā€œFor fuckā€™s sake!ā€ Kicking his foot against the door, Edward crouched down on the floor, rocking back and forth on the tip of his toes as he muttered into his clenched hands. He couldnā€™t do this; something was wrong. What is happening here? Edward cursed again and stood up, pacing back and forth in the small corridor before finally rounding towards Carter, an uncharacteristic look on his face.
ā€œLook,ā€ Edward started, licking his lips once as he looked at his friend as long as he could until his eyes flickered away once more, ā€œI know that this shit is extremely hard for you to comprehend and I feel for your loss.ā€ He let out a sigh and let a hand fall on Carterā€™s shoulders, his hand clenching hard as he tried to convey the pain that laced through his own heart at the very moment. ā€œBut weā€™ve got to move on if we want to survive. We canā€™t just stick ourselves in this mall for the rest of time, can we? No one will know weā€™re gone, possibly- and I need to get to my parents.ā€ Letting his hand fall back to his side, Edward let out a long sigh as he tried to find the words once again. They had not come out of his mouth as he had wanted them to; they were off from what he wanted to convey. But try as he might, the sentiment could not come to Edward as his throat dried and his mouth became parched, his throat tugging into the back of his esophagus as he tried to speak again. Before he could, tears filled the sides of his eyes and caused Edward to turn his head away in a rush, covering it with a hand as he coughed awkwardly.
Why did this have to happen? He thought, cursing all the entities that controlled the events that occurred on earth, wishing that he had never left his house that morning. That he had given in to the usual morning laziness everyone felt rather than packing up and making his way to the bus stop. That his mother had told him to stay home and prepare for his fatherā€™s arrival rather than rushing him off to school. If so, everything would have been so much better. Edward would not have had to seen his friends die one by one only till the point that all but three were gone. ā€œSorry,ā€ Pretending to cough, Edward sniffled slightly as he let his hand fall, blinking his watery eyes as he glared up at the ceiling. ā€œI just- Iā€¦ I donā€™t know whatā€™s going to happen.ā€ Looking helplessly at Carter, Edward shook his head as he placed his hands on his hips, letting out a long sigh as he turned towards the door once more. ā€œEverything happened so quick and it just feels as if nothing has reallyā€¦sunk in. Iā€™m so sorry about your loss, mate.ā€ It was a mutual loss, one that Edward would keep close to his heart, as he had been a close friend with Carter and his sister for many long years.
But now was the time to move on. As the sound of hail continued to pelt down against the metal and concrete protective layers that surrounded them, the countdown to having the ceiling cave in was slowly ticking down with unknown digits. Sniffling once more, Edward closed his eyes and banished all the thoughts that had suddenly swam forth, blocking them out as best as he could so that he could focus on the task at hand. The one that faced him but a meter and a half away- the one he needed Carterā€™s help with. ā€œIf you know how to pick a lock, go ahead. If you canā€™t, letā€™s just bust it down. With you and I, Iā€™m sure we can do it.ā€.

Life was a mystery from beginning to end. There were questions left unanswered at every corner and major intersection. There were doubts about the simplest of life's moments. People weren't always able to understand that or really accept that. That was probably the situation that everyone in this mall was going through right now. No one was able to understand why in the world this was happening to them. No one was able to understand what was going on and what was going to happen next. It was a terrifying situation. There was nothing more terrifying than not being able to answer the question of what in the hell is going to happen next?

Suffering was nothing more than an evil game that nature was spitefully playing with this handful of teens. Down in the depths of their guts was a twisting that reminded that every living breath around them quickly escaped the mouths of their friends. Carter was certainly feeling the pain. His sister had released her last breath in a bus that was meant to keep them safe. It did the opposite. It put them in danger. They were all in danger. Carter was terrified that he would end up like his sister. Vulnerable to the world around him. Left as a victim of natureā€™s demise.

As Carter stood by watching Edward ram his own body into a door that refused to budge, the thought was finally sinking into his brain. The twisting was developing in his gut. The churning was getting too much for him to deal with. As Edward tried to console his friend with a hand on his shoulder, the emotion was just too much to bear for Ed himself. Tears rolled down Edā€™s face, he attempted to turn away but he was too late. Carter was able to see the pain and tears seeping through him. Carter knew that he was worried about his family, he felt it was slightly insensitive being that his sister had just passed but everyone was in some sort of pain.

Carter wanted to break down and die. He wanted to lie down on the ground and stop breathing. He wanted to get hit by a train. He wanted to run back into the hail and let it impale him until his last breath was beat out of him violently. But he couldnā€™t. His best friend was depending on him. His family was depending on him. If he wasnā€™t going to do it for himself, he was going to do it for his sister. So that she wouldnā€™t have died in vain. He nodded at Edward and prepared his shoulder to use it as a battering ram.

He positioned his body to aim right at the door. Lock picking was definitely something that Carter was capable of doing. Itā€™s something he learned a few years ago when he was a younger rebel. But it figures that Carter didnā€™t have time to pick locks, at least Edward didnā€™t think so. He ran towards the door, having it creak just slightly. He kicked at the door knob a few times. Carter knew a bullet to the lock would definitely get the door open but that wasnā€™t an option here. Edward and Carter would have to knock down the door together. Two strong shoulders should do the trick. The door would open to a room full of machines, levers and knobs that controlled the entire building. The room that would light the Network back up. That room would allow the stranded students to connect with the outside world. The room that held their survival.

[center] Virgis heard Delaney walk over and herd her say, Hey. Finn. Don't go passing out on us. Virgis wiped more barf on his jacket when Delaney pulled him up. Virgis was staring blankly still. He'd always done that... If he was left alone too long, he would get so lost in his thoughts, that people couldn't pull him out. Virgis stumbled while Delaney pulled on him, trying to get him to go. He complied, moving on his own a bit.

Then Virgis smelled it... He couldn't tell what it was. For a second he thought the compounds had already reached them. That made him nearly stop for a second, but then he figured it out. It wasn't compounds; It was blood. Adrien's barfed up blood. Also, probably Virgis's barf. It smelled worse than barn animal crap. The smell brought Virgis out of his daze, and he was able to walk on his own.

He realized Delaney was helping clean him... Virgis was friends with Delaney... Still though, he could tell they all saw him as the younger kid... What was she cleaning? Blood or barf? Probably both. Then he heard something- a laugh?- and Delaney gestured to Adrien, asking him for help. Virgis realized he'd lost blood. Since Delaney and Virgis were next to the bathroom, he just went inside. Adrien seemed out of it, and Virgis felt he should just get away from him.

He turned on the sink, and was thankful it was still working, and started washing his face, and hands. He cleaned the blood and barf off of most of himself, and looked in the mirror. Virgis felt anger... This was so screwed up. He'd never barfed for a reason other than being really sick. He'd never had people's blood on me. People that were dead. Virgis shivered. He had to show some strength... Delaney just had to help him up and clean him with Kleenex! There was a lot wrong with that, in his opinion. He should've been able to do it all himself. It's not like he's been through more than... Not like he's had trouble...
