Prologue:

26th Century, The Earth's Orbit, New Eden City.

"LADIES AND GENTLEMEN. BOYS AND GIRLS. HUMANS AND XENOTYPES OF ALL AGES. ARE, YOU, READYYYYY?!"

The crowd numbering in the hundreds of thousands gave a deafening roar, as the Announcer waved his arms up into the air to lift their spirits even further. The arena was colossal; exactly one square mile carved into the oval shape that made up the Gladiatorial ring. Double that space, even, if you counted the ring of spectator seats that wound around it.

"My beloved Audience! In Celebration of the announcement of the first UV Tournament in four years, we have a special match here today! A type you all know and love: filled with courage, desperation, death-defying odds and the skill of a few brave warriors..." He cupped his hands and continued in a deathly whisper, that traveled to speakers all around the Audience ring and further delivered it into their individual ear-pieces...
"It's time, my friends... For the last stand."


The audience roared again, a wave of memorabilia thrown into the air and then caught, that spread all around the Arena population in a fantastical display of lights of blue, green and purple. The Announcer stood tall, clapped his hands above his head as though in prayer, then smoothly moved one hand down to stretch out at his side and point at the far end of of the ring; where a static purple field of energy separated a crowd of white figures.

"Numbering exactly one thousand, our attackers are the infamous Zed-class Xenobot, with low-level weaponry and barely a brain to speak of! In just a few minutes, you will see them pour out of that gate and eliminate any hostile that cannot hold his own!
"And now for our defenders... We picked them from the best of TEN of our new Gladiators so that they may have their chance at Glory... Failure in this battle means death, but should they succeed, the survivors will be given Credits, weapons, armour, clearance to Level 3 Habitation.. and of course... The right to enter the most infamous tournament in the history of the Earth!"

Taro could hear it... From there it was faint; behind the locked doors and static energy shield that stopped them getting in, or out. But the yells of the Announcer and the roars of the Crowd were impossible to miss completely, no matter how hard you tried to ignore them. There were ten of them, including him. Gladiators; men and women with no other choice in this dystopian life but to earn a living in the harshest arena ever built - where upgrades in technology had created a new Warrior caste and with it, the fundamental desire to see which of them is best.

"Get ready, you're on in 30 seconds." The assistant hand said, after coming to order them to line up in preparation for the match itself.

Taro stood; unusually blank of face and steady of breath. He had no doubt the others were nervous, but he wasn't... Not if he didn't look deep enough. He could ignore it, push those thoughts to the back of his mind and forget about them. He could pretend it was a game, pretend it was all just a silly little play on stage, where the murdered stayed alive. He had had a few victories in the past; enough to secure him a basic set of armour with limited jet-capabilities, plus a plasma-based assault rifle and a sword enhanced with extreme vibration and an added electric current. He had wanted an energy sword... But he hadn't been able to afford one.

He had almost forgotten there were a thousand out there. That is, until he realized he was first in the line. He could see right through the shield, flickering and waving of texture like some sort of lava lamp.

"And here it is... The moment you've aaaaall been waiting for! It's time, my friends... To see which of these teams can come out on top: the army of grunts, or the team of Gladiators...
Let the battle... Begin!"

The shield was suddenly gone, and Taro was stepping out into the blinding light.

Introduction:

This RolePlay is about an age in the future where the speed and blatant power of ballistic weaponry has been replaced in a series of technological advances by the extremely accurate and long range plasma and beam rifles. Bullets are no longer used; they're expensive and drain resources and the guns that fired them now exist only in Museums and Collectors Homes. As a result of the slower shots that come from new weaponry, it is now possible to dodge and hit a projectile out of the air like a Samurai cuts through an arrow. With these simple changes, the Warrior caste was reborn. Men and women who took up warfare and martial arts as they no longer felt so... Underpowered, compared to the weapons of old.

With the warrior caste came the codes of honour, return to more classical formation warfare and the arenas crowds wishing for blood. Men and women take up arms in the ring and die for glory and fame...

The biggest of these Arenas is the New Eden City Arena, host arena of the UV Tournament. And despite its incredibly infamous past, the UV Tournament is continuing... And somewhere, you'll be in it.
