Soleil is a thick, chilly shell around a burning ember of resentment and anger, and that's on a good day. On a bad day the ember is stoked, and she all but seethes just under the surface. Fortunately, bad days of this sort are rather few.

For just about as long as she can remember, her world has been composed of herself and her little sister, Luna. Their parents both died when they were very young—young enough that Soleil doesn't actually have any memories of them. They live and have always lived in one of the grimiest, poorest areas of the city, and for the first few years, their survival was touch and go. Soleil developed the personality traits required to cope with this, including a certain hardness of demeanor and cynical way of viewing other people. Her trust is almost impossible to win, her civility default but limited. She isn't cruel or mean-spirited in the main, but her patience for people and wastes of time is limited, and will eventually run out.

She doesn't usually talk much, seeing most conversation as pointless. When she does talk, it's clipped, quiet, and usually in a deadpan voice. Her tone is slightly raspy at the edges, and well into the lower register for a woman. Most of her exchanges with people, be they customers, neighbors, or servicepeople, are perfunctory and as free of the trappings of small talk as possible. There's a certain kind of honesty to her, but she's not dumb enough to say exactly what she thinks all the time. She can and does check herself around people with power over her, and in her position, that's a lot of people. Still, her concealed bitterness means she can't bring herself to flatter or be obsequious, so the best she can manage is "acerbic, but only mildly so."

Soleil is very observant, and good at getting a quick read on people. Threat assessment was a vital skill in her formative years, and it hasn't left her. Wary by default, she rarely lapses in her tendency to track others through rooms, scan them for likely weapons, and so on. One could say she almost never relaxes or loosens up and they'd be right. She's as tightly-wound as piano wire most of the time, though she does a pretty good job affecting a sort of listless lassitude instead.

Indeed, most people who would care to observe her in turn would think her much less sharp than she is; slightly slow even, or at least extremely apathetic. Her face doesn't emote any more than her tone of voice does, and she has a deliberate way of moving that looks efficient and somewhat graceful but also harmless. The truth is, she's had to train herself to do this, as normally her reaction speeds are unusually fast, to the point of perhaps being alarming. She does a lot of work to make herself seem insignificant and unimportant; the one area in which she could even remotely be said to allow her potential to shine is in her job, where she has a well-deserved reputation as a whiz with all things mechanical.

Large chunks of time are missing from Soleil's childhood; she has no memories before the age of ten, actually, which is much later than most people typically start to remember things. What she does recall is that she once had a father and a mother, but that something happened to them. She can't recall what, or their names and faces or anything—just that one day, she knew she was alone and had a very young sister to look after.

For those initial years, they survived on what she could scrounge from dumpsters, pitying restaurant owners, or what neighbors would give them in exchange for chores of various kinds. It wasn't always enough, and Soleil made sure that on the days when only one of them could eat, it was Luna. She'd make up excuses, of course—say she'd already eaten or had managed to get the nice lunch-lady at middle school who wouldn't charge her for school lunch, or whatever made the most sense at the time.

Over this period, she discovered that she had a real knack for mechanics, after helping a local repairman with a few basic chores. She was cheap labor, and so he didn't mind employing her, and in a short time, she was capable of everything he could do and more. He took advantage of this for a few years, outsourcing the hard work to Soleil and taking the majority share of the profits, but by this point, Sol and Luna were eating almost steadily even from the slim cut he gave her, and she was slowly building herself a reputation. People were noticing her talent, and eventually bringing their jobs directly to her.

And therein lay their salvation. Soleil moved into independent business, buying herself a basic toolkit with what she'd managed to save and doing housecalls to fix plumbing or faulty wiring, or patch up a muffler someone couldn't afford to replace. This enabled her and Luna to get off the street, and when Sol finished middle school, she elected to drop out entirely. Even if they were eating regularly now, they couldn't afford two high school tuitions; it was Soleil's firm opinion that Luna was the one who should go. In the meantime, Sol converted the garage of their crummy rental into a proper shop, her business now mostly cars and other complex machinery. At night, she'd study Luna's books and do the same homework assignments, comparing answers when Luna got hers back from whatever teacher. It wasn't real school, but it was something, and though she definitely lacks a conventional education, Soleil is nevertheless extremely intelligent.

And that's pretty much been her life. Right now, she's saving up so that Luna can go to college. It might take a while to get the funds, but the two of them are both working in the meantime. The shop business earns more money by a significant margin than Luna's work as a secretary, but it's also much less stable, and has unpredictable fluctuations which mean that some periods are still very lean for the two young women.

Soleil likes to act as though she's never questioned why she just understands things so much easier than other people do, or why she can lift as much as men twice her size. In fact, she prefers to forget that she can do these things at all, and prefers to keep her head down and go beneath notice. She's perfectly happy to stay buried in the sand, because that's the way she and her sister stay the safest. To most people, their life isn't much at all, but considering how far they've come from two starving, homeless urchins, she'll do anything it takes to protect what they have now.

If wishes were poppy, Soleil would be high as a kite lately, and it has everything to do with Samael. Something about him just makes her… feel. Makes her want things for herself that she's long accepted she doesn't get to have. It's dangerous, and she's wary of it at the same time as she can't quite seem to make herself stop wishing. Ordinarily she'd run from something like that and never look back, but she just… can't.

She'd almost managed to forget how dangerous Luna's tendency to want to help people can be. This time around it nearly got both of them killed, and Soleil's still rattled by that, even if she goes out of her way not to demonstrate as much. She's having a hard time dealing with it right now, but keeps up the pretense of being fine. One thing is clear though: if Luna's going to keep doing this, the biggest danger—Zinoviev—has to go.

Soleil isn't exactly sure what to make of Mick, especially because she can't seem to figure out what the Hell he is. It seems to be something between what she is and what Samael is, but that's not quite right either. She wants to believe in his good intentions, but…

The scruffy man with bowed shoulders and a hunched posture looks like a bear, but his demeanor is more like an old hound than anything. One who's seen a fair bit more than his share of the worst the world has to offer, at that. And like any dog kicked often enough, Mick (as he calls himself these days), suffers from a fundamental contradiction.

On the one hand, some part of him still looks really hard for the good in the world, still has a tendency to pick up pack, as it were. To settle himself amidst the starved homeless of the city's grimiest areas, and do what he can to assuage the burden of living in such conditions. To his fellow homeless, he might even qualify as a light: a candle rather than the sun, to be sure, but something a little bit warm and a little bit reassuring nevertheless. He always seems to have a little bit to share, just half a sandwich or a nip of something warm on a cold night. He's no miracle worker, though, not anymore, and remains fundamentally powerless against the conditions that create such suffering.

On the other, a dog long enough stray and kicked learns to keep outsiders at a distance, to growl and snap when they draw too close. Painfully slow to trust, cynical, and so tired he sometimes wonders how he's still alive. He doesn't tend to socialize much, and spends a lot of time inside his own head. He's slowly losing what little sense of humor he has left, and is deeply convinced that trying to do much beyond surviving is useless.

There's a lingering sense of melancholy about him, a perceptible thing that serves to keep everyone a certain distance away even if he's not outright hostile. Even streaked in dirt, even layered in castoff, threadbeare clothes and with his hair permanently disheveled, there's something untouchable about him, something that retains the faintest hint of his divinity and cloaks him in the kind of sorrow that other people cannot touch. It's so much a part of him that he hardly notices anymore.

One upon a time, Mick was a military commander, and the most physically powerful member of the Heavenly host, but it would be impossible to guess that interacting with him now. There's a certain physicality about him, a way of being that occupies space even beyond his bodily dimensions. He tends to draw attention without seeking it, something he does his best to diminish. His body language is more communicative than his face or words most of the time, and he still has a certain way of moving that evokes deadliness and strength. Small, subtle reminders of things long gone.

Perhaps some part of him is still more wolf than stray dog, but it's buried deep, and hard to rouse.

It's a long way down from the top of the world.

The thing is, Michael's descent from the Left Hand of God to Mick the local bum wasn't really a fall, as such, but the result wound up just the same as if it had been. He's barely even a shadow of his former self, and has lost anyone and anything he ever held dear, now left to languish for the rest of time in a Hell of his own making, quite literally.

It all started with Samael.

Back in the day, Michael ad Samael were actually close friends. Brothers, of a certain kind, and not just because they happened to both be angels of the LORD. Michael had a legitimate, personal respect for Samael, and though he was the general of the Firmament's army, he often sought out the other angel for strategic discussion and plain old companionship. Something about their personalities just meshed, in a way he didn't have to think about because it was simple. Easy, even. They were also both quite close with Azrael, and Raphael.

Of course, there was also Sariel, who Sam was so obviously head-over-heels for that the others often teased him about it. It wasn't exactly permitted, but the three of them kept Sam's secret for him, thinking that it was ultimately harmless. Besides, the Father of them all knew everything, and hadn't done anything to stop it, so how bad could it possibly be? Pretty bad, as it turns out. It resulted in a horrible misunderstanding, some deception, and an incident in which Michael was left with a choice: cast Samael down with his own hands, or kill him. He couldn't bear to kill him, so he threw him out of Heaven instead. He doesn't know how he knows, but he is quite certain that is the day that set him down his eventual path.

That path led to the war for the mortal plane. It was a war Lucifer was never supposed to win, and yet he seemed to be. Michael and his angels did everything they could to protect the earth, but another, growing faction was pushing for the army to just grab all the 'chosen' humans and retreat to Heaven, sealing it off beyond the intervention of anyone but God. Eventually this became the majority opinion, and Michael was faced with another possible choice. He chose to defy his orders, and Azrael and Raphael went with him. Brothers, till the end.

What happened after that resulted in Raphael's death, and the stripping of most of Michael and Azrael's power, and the isolation of the remains of earth from Heaven and Hell. Unfortunately, there were plenty of demons still about, and before long, they had rigged everything in their own power. Michael and Azrael, weakened, were powerless to stop it. Azrael eventually seemed to resign himself to this fate, living as a human and eventually even having children. The damage to his power had rendered him mortal, though, and soon he, too, had died. Michael, now calling himself Mick, was entirely alone in a world ruled by demons, having lost everything he ever loved.

Unsurprisingly, it's a complete crapshoot.

He needs to get his mind out of the gutter, is how he needs to handle this one. He's literally older than dirt, and Luna's barely an adult. End of story. He likes her, as a person, because of course he would. The occasional intrusive thought that suggests more than that? He'll keep stamping those out until they're completely dead. Her old man once asked him to look after them, and on that better late than never, but that's it.

Mick isn't sure what to make of Samael's apparent involvement in the Nishants' lives. His first instinct is to be highly suspicious of it—Sam's near on a demon now, and there's no coming back from that. Except… except he's met Abaddon now, too, and maybe there is something like coming back from it. If there's any chance that's what's happening with Sam… but even that isn't worth playing with the lives of Az's kids.

Soleil surely now knows he's not what he seems. He'd never intended to break his cover in front of either her or Luna, but he supposes it's too late for that now. He did exactly what Azrael asked him to, all those years ago, even if it's not enough to make up for all his preceding failures. If she distrusts him for it, well, she probably should. It might help balance out the fact that her sister seems to trust him too much.

How do you characterize a thunderstorm?

That's what Hikaru is, down at his core: a gale, or maybe a tsunami, or something like that. Dark clouds, crackling lightning, wind enough to tear down everything around him. To call his personality forceful is to understate things a bit; but then maybe it also misses some of the important things. He's used to getting what he wants and having his way—generations of worship will do that to a person. He's used to leaving his mark, to letting his actions speak for him, rather than his words. Not to say he doesn't have a way with those, too—he does. It's just secondary.

He's charismatic, in a certain way. It's hard to ignore his presence, even if he's in the middle of a crowd. There's just something about him that demands attention. And to be sure, some of it's just his flashy looks, but gods all tend to have those, and Hikaru stands out even among gods. It might have something to do with the way he carries himself—strong but the opposite of sturdy. He's utter stillness and then sudden flashes of motion, or the slow-rolling build of a thunderhead. Tough to get a grip on, impossible to predict for certain, and often surprising.

Truthfully, he seems more like a wild creature than anything so stately and dignified as a prince of the heavens. Perhaps that's because he's really not—son of Izanagi he may be, but he's nothing as far removed from humanity as the sun or moon. Nothing so distant and clear. He's closer to earth, more aware of human custom and convention than his siblings, and his mannerisms are rougher accordingly. He's got a bit of a mouth on him, and not much by way of a mental filter. Combine that with a notorious trickster's attitude, and it tends to leave a strong impression. The people who like Hikaru generally love him. The people who don't like him—they tend to hate his guts.

A veneer of arrogant self-possession does hide some benevolent tendencies; the point of a storm is the rain, after all, as distracting and devastating as the rest of it can be. He's most likely to do a good deed in secret if the desire seizes him—publicly making his softer traits known is not something he wants to do.

His belligerent edge has served him well in the past, but his anger isn't explosive. It's slow to build, and precise in the striking, but very, very destructive. This fact makes provoking him—genuinely provoking him, not jokingly or for fun—rather unwise.

To perhaps put it more succinctly: sarcastic sonuvabitch with a few extra layers of interesting underneath. Engage at your own risk.

Susano-o is the third of four children between Izanagi and Izanami. Like many a middle child, he is well known for acting out, striving to define himself memorably even despite the rather impressive company he's in as a member of his family. It's something he's managed to do, actually, and as far as the popularity of he and his stories go, he counts not only as god, but also folk hero, a unique distinction among his kin.

Born the master of storms, a somewhat more earthbound deity than his celestial siblings, Susano-o took to the mortal plane with a rare fondness. He liked it, the strange domain of humans and monsters, and he liked the attention the humans would lavish on him when he did good deeds on their behalf. He even learned to enjoy their fear of him, in a certain sense, the way they would fall before him like threshed wheat if ever he revealed his presence for what it was. Despite this, he never acquired Tsukuyomi's penchant for torturing them with impossible or heinous tasks; his favor was given or withheld a bit more whimsically than that, and he grew a reputation for being a capricious trickster, as likely to play pranks as solve problems. His temper was fierce and deadly, but not provoked for absolutely nothing, and so in a sense he was almost reliable, at least compared to the others.

Perhaps it was this that led them to pray to him when the daughter of an ancient earthly deity became the latest victim of one of the world's most infamous monsters: Yamata no Orochi, the eight-headed serpent. They begged Susano-o to save their child by slaying the creature, and he took on the challenge, eventually tricking and destroying the mighty creature. From Orochi's bones, he forged the legendary sword Kusanagi, the heavenly version of which he carries with him to this day.

Kushinada, the rescued princess, and her parents were of course immensely relieved. She was offered to Susano-o as a bride, as was the custom in those days, but he declined, preferring to keep his freedom. That's not to say they haven't been involved, of course—it's something of an open secret in the celestial court that Susano-o has many lovers, Kushinada among them, and he among hers. It's an arrangement that works for both of them, and so neither has seen much point in dissolving it despite the lack of romantic attraction.

The rush of slaying a god-killer like Orochi was intoxicating to Susano-o, and he's slain many other monsters since. The occupation serves as a necessary outlet to the violence inherent in his nature as god of storms, and over the years he has worn many faces and names to do it, becoming over and over again part of the myths and tales of humanity. His latest name is more of a civilian identity than anything, one he uses to get around on earth, where he still spends a fair amount of his time.

Yet another prank pulled in heaven, this time against his father directly, got Hikaru put on Izanami-visitation duty, or as he refers to it, "momsitting." Yomi is by no means his favorite place to be, but until one of his siblings manages to screw up even worse, he's stuck with the job, which means periodic visits to the underworld. His plan to get one of the others pushed to the position backfired, and their dumb asses all wound up banished to the mortal plane instead, stripped of their powers. That part's hilarious.

Not so funny? He's momsitting for sure until at least one of them gets their shit together.

Sakuya, while a goddess, isnt one that Hikaru has ever really associated with; as far as he knows, she's married to that one guy who's kind of a douche and has something to do with spring or cherry trees or... something. It's not like it has anything to do with him, so he's never really formed much of an opinion on her. She's pretty, if he remembers right, but they haven't conversed.

Hikaru's rivalry with all three of his siblings is pretty intense, to say the least. Things have always been that way between the four of them. But Tsu is distinguished from Ama or Kagu by the fact that they actually get along pretty well when they aren't actively competing. Technically that probably makes Eien Hikaru's favorite brother, though that's a dubious distinction at best, honestly.

Hitomi has spent her entire life in the background of other people's lives, and she is well aware of this fact. As it happens, she prefers it that way, because the few times she's really managed to draw any sort of attention, it hasn't worked out well for her. The desire to blend and fade from the awareness of others means that she's cultivated a quiet, unassuming demeanor that doesn't like to get in anyone's way and doesn't go out of her own way to do anything particularly interesting, either. Her hobbies are almost exclusively things she can do by herself or behind the comfortable anonymity of a computer screen, she doesn't go out all that often except to work, and she doesn't really keep friends or other kinds of companion.

Always awkward at best, she's quite shy, sometimes painfully so, though if she absolutely has to, she can sort of hide it behind either her customer-service face or a shield made from sarcasm and dry humor. Admittedly, the last doesn't always work that well; social situations are uncomfortable enough for her that she often finds herself thinking of exactly the comeback she wanted several minutes too late. She's a terrible liar, not a very good communicator, and hopelessly clumsy around other people, more likely to accidentally put her foot in her mouth or trip over them both than manage anything too successful.

She's spent much of her life alone, and solitude is indeed where she's most comfortable—though she also can't deny to herself that she's incredibly lonely. Her cat, Fuyu-chan, helps a bit with that, but she's quite deprived of human contact, something which is readily obvious after enough time in her company.

While Hitomi is, at the core of herself, a very good-hearted person, her fear and discomfort can prevent her from really acting in the way she wants to, and she tends to push away people who make any attempt to reach out and connect with her. While her solitude is often painful, it's a pain she knows she can tolerate. The potential pain of growing close to someone only to be abandoned or rejected, however... that is another beast entirely, and she's not brave enough to risk it, something that she knows about herself.

Alone, she's much more than she seems. From early in her life, she manifested strange powers she could not explain, and while she has mostly repressed them, there are some that simply cannot be denied. For one, she's bizarrely strong for someone of her dimensions. She also never gets lost and feels a pull she cannot explain towards being outside at night, particularly anywhere she can see the moon and stand under its light. She tries not to indulge this weird tendency, and indeed has soundly rejected the supernatural parts of herself, retreating into a stubborn skeptical stance on any such things.

Smart, melancholy, and inclined towards self-flagellation (sometimes of the physical-harm sort), Hitomi's not exactly the ideal candidate for, well, anything. She tries her best to be okay with that.

Hitomi Ishida never met her parents. In fact, that's not even the name they gave her—she was committed to the state upon her birth, and raised by a combination of caretakers and foster parents, none of whom kept her long, for various reasons. It was her longest-term arrangement that granted her a permanent surname, and the nurse at the hospital where she was born who called her Hitomi, for the strange violet color of her eyes.

She grew up rather introverted and awkward, as one might imagine. Rarely at the same school for more than a year or two, she tended to be easily the tallest child in any of her classes, including the boys, which became the subject of some discomfort for her when people inevitably found it either intimidating or lacking femininity or whatever else. She never really had any friends, even through high school, where she gained something of a reputation for being "creepy," given her moroseness and tendency to dress in a lot of black outside of school hours.

Her peculiarity is not merely of the mundane kind, however. Hitomi always excelled in both gym and academic classes in school, being strangely strong for a person who looks as thin as she does. She was able to easily outrun pretty much everyone she knew without training, and actually won several national titles in track and field in middle school, the one year she competed on an actual team. Studying came just as naturally, and she found that she rarely managed to forget anything, even minor details that would ordinarily not have become embedded in a person's long-term memory. When left to her own devices, her biorhythms are completely nocturnal, and she has always felt an inexplicable affinity for the moon. The best things have always seemed to happen to her when it was full, and the worst when it was new, though she's managed to convince herself that this is just some kind of coincidence.

Hitomi developed clinical depression in her early teenage years, and has dealt with various self-harm issues since, culminating in a rather clumsy suicide attempt when she was sixteen. She is also diagnosed as being schizophrenic, due to her reports of seeing things that are not present. What she doesn't know is that the things she sees—ghosts, oni, and so on—do in fact exist, but cannot be seen by most human beings. She has developed a coping mechanism that involves pretending not to see them anymore, because the medication that helps a little with the depression does absolutely nothing to get rid of the visions, and she doesn't particularly want to be institutionalized again.

She spent a long stretch in a psychiatric facility after her suicide attempt, during which she remotely attended university, graduating at the age of twenty with a fairly useless degree in literature and her psychiatrist's approval to rejoin a world that frankly doesn't hold all that much interest to her. As a legal adult, she has the right and responsibility to take care of herself now, and so she got a tiny apartment in a small Kyoto suburb, and holds down two jobs: one as the assistant and delivery person to the local florist, and another that mostly just involves doing odd jobs for the townspeople.

The prospect of her life continuing as it has really doesn't do much for her, and she can feel herself slipping back into the place she occupied at sixteen. This time, though, she knows enough to hide it. While she knows she isn't doing well and probably needs help, she can't bear the thought of more years in a sterile hospital, wasting away until she's something less than the ghosts she sees in every corner.

Svetlana is quite the bright soul, a rather dynamic and vivacious personality as a rule. Her natural charisma is perhaps her most notable personality trait; she has an easy way with others that allows her to slide fluidly among all kinds of people, bypassing ordinary distinctions of class, race, gender and culture. There's something about her that's magnetic, and while it isn't any sort of supernatural effect or talent as some metahumans have, it's a powerful thing in its own way. She has a sense of genuineness about her, even when she's intentionally being coy, which is honestly pretty often.

That's only with the mask on, though. In her everyday persona, Sveta is still friendly and kind, but in the sort of benign way that doesn't really push anyone beyond what they can handle. She's the woman behind the counter at the bakery, working magic with coffee and scones, pretty but otherwise mostly forgettable, in the way all ordinary strangers are forgotten. That's good, since she needs to blend in, but honestly she wonders if that's really just how she is: bland, mild, unmemorable, unimportant. The thought stings quite a bit, and she tries not to dwell overmuch on it, but sometimes she can't help herself.

In her hero guise, she's quite different indeed. Snowfall is Estolia City's darling, their most recognizable and quite possibly most popular hero, despite the recency of her appearance on the scene. This is in large part because of her well-known backstory, but part of it is also surely due to her surpassing talent and unconventional beauty, a combination which tends to draw notice. Her record of service thus far has also been stellar, which certainly helps her remain in public opinion. Her charisma shines its brightest when she's behind the mask, unhindered by the reservations that plague her in more ordinary life.

Truthfully, she feels a great deal of pressure to perform to a ridiculously-high standard. The legacy of her parents and mentor looms large for her, and she was always going to have a big target on her back as far as villains were concerned, given just who she is. The strain of trying to live up to the enshrined perfection of her precursors leaves her feeling perpetually inadequate even as she takes great pains not to give even a sign of it. Her reputation matters to her; even the criticism slung by people who have no idea what they're talking about hurts her far more than it should, slowly imploding whatever real self-confidence she managed to gain as her powers gradually developed.

She wears it well, but her bare face is just as much a mask as the one that came with her costume. She has few friends, and between her business, her volunteer work, and her hero's occupation, she doesn't really have time for any. In fact, probably her only friend is Misha, who she was raised with. Despite her coquettish demeanor, she also doesn't have (and hasn't had on any long term basis) a lover, either.

Svetlana Antar was born the child of Sergei Rasputinov and Jahanna Antar; or, as the wider world knew them, Blizzard and Seraph, two of the world's most beloved superheroes and the first leaders of the United Hero League, headquartered in the massive metropolis of Estolia City. The UHL extends membership invitations to only those heroes both skilled and devoted to justice enough to count as among the world's very best, and her parents were acknowledged as among the finest in history in both respects. When her parents married, it was a matter of public interest even greater than royal or celebrity unions, because there was a very real sense in which the world's security was reliant upon them and their allies.

Svetlana was known about, but only as a matter of speculation; her true identity was carefully concealed from the moment she was born, though it wasn't uncommon for reporters to ask her parents questions about how the 'superbaby' was doing or to prod for details about any chance of her powers manifesting. So in a sense, her life was public record from moment one, though thankfully it was shared in only the vaguest of terms.

She wasn't more than a baby when her parents sacrificed themselves in a desperate attempt to stop a doomsday plot by the villainous Dr. Erebus, one of the world's most notorious (and unscrupulous) metahumans. Their effort was successful, but cost both of them their lives. The UHL lived on after them, the mantle of leadership assumed by Captain Estolia, one of their closest friends. He also adopted Svetlana, raising her alongside his daughter Misha.

In time, Sveta awoke to her powers, and Captain Estolia became her mentor. She was his sidekick from her mid-teen years, and from then on was watched very closely. It was assumed, but never confirmed, that she was the daughter of the two martyred heroes, but her teacher did what he could to keep her insulated from the pressure. Unfortunately, it was impossible, and when she "graduated" from being his sidekick to a fully-fledged hero of her own, she told the press what everyone already knew: the daughter of Estolia City's most beloved heroes was taking up their mantle.

It certainly hasn't been easy, and Sveta attempted to do this slowly when possible, attending college and then culinary school and opening her bakery as a way of giving her secret identity a robust reality. She didn't want to be only a hero, because she was deeply afraid that she'd never be able to do it well enough. As it is, it's not helping much with her confidence issues, but it keeps her busy.

Of late, she does volunteer work with the Gendler Foundation, named after the journalist who was first public relations specialist for the UHL. Its goal is to bring metahumans and other people into more regular contact, and develops programs for heroes to get ground-level exposure to their communities. In particular, she arranges things like hospital visits to sick children, and other charity work that involves youth. Of course, she only occasionally shows up to these events in her hero persona; most of the time she acts as a civilian organizer, and the Foundation is none the wiser, to her knowledge anyway.

Aleksandr comes into the bakery pretty often, honestly. She only knows his name from his receipts, as he doesn't seem like much of a talker. That's okay with her, though—she's honestly too shy without the mask on to make much effort to strike up conversation with him, either. She's gleaned a few basic things, like that he teaches, since he's filled out report cards at the table before, but that's really it.

They've both been through a lot in life, but Sveta's come to rely on the fact that no matter how bad everything else gets, they always have each other. On most days, Rainier is paid to be charming as fuck for about six hours. And that is absolutely something he can deliver. When he's on the clock at his day job, there's hardly a more attentive listener, adroit conversationalist, or gracious attendant. He's warm, he's flirty, he's witty and suave and basically the perfect gentleman. Off the clock, the facade drops, and the jaded, bitter cynic emerges. Rain's a man fundamentally tired of and bored with life at the same time, a pervasive apathy wrapped around a core of pain that he blunts with drugs, cigarettes, alcohol and sex—pretty much all of them to levels that other people would consider excessive. He makes extremely good money at both of his vocations, which he has to do in order to fund his various expensive habits, because he's enough of a connoisseur of vice that he'll really only take the best of all of them, and that adds up really fast.

For this reason, he can come across as a shallow, arrogant hedonist, and for the most part, that impression is the correct one. He still has his charms—there's something to be said for the self-confidence and charisma of the typical narcissist, after all, particularly a narcissist who's also extremely clever, and has the odd moment of generosity. He doesn't mind seeing to it that other people enjoy themselves as well; he might even like it, in a bittersweet sort of way. The shallow admiration of others, whether lavished upon him for his looks, his wit, or his uncannily precise ability to tell exactly what people want, provides him a thrill every bit as temporary as a narcotic, and perhaps nearly as addictive.

Though filled about to bursting with pleasure, his existence lacks much by way of joy, and in fact he has exactly one friend, three (other) people he likes, and that's about it. Honestly, even that number's pretty lucky—being able to read minds with astonishing accuracy has never been a particularly fortunate skill in the sense that it's given him a hellishly bad opinion of most people. He seeks superficial pleasure because he considers it more honest than so-called "deeper" happiness. Particularly that supposedly profound kind that's supposed to arise from human connection and love. A bunch of bullshit, if you ask him, and he's the one who's been in hundreds of heads, so really, who's most likely to be right here?

The depths of his own psyche are probably better left unplumbed, as his life has twisted him into something rather dark. He's able to keep a lid on the worst of his tendencies, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. For one, he's a bit of a sadist, and would probably consider himself a sociopath as well. He's ruthless, often cruel, and while he adheres to certain principles as part of his job as an information broker, they don't resemble anything near a hero's ethics. While not a "villain" on the level of some of the others, he exists comfortably in a very dark grey area. He's killed people on more than one occasion, and while he doesn't ever do so without a reason, his reasons are hardly only the kinds that most people would find satisfactory.

What could drive an intelligent, extraordinarily-gifted child to a life as a criminal and part-time host? Perhaps only a particularly-volatile combination of things; certainly that's what did it in Rainier's case.

The first was, perhaps unfortunately, being born a whoreson, the get of some unknown man and the kind of woman who'd never had a little bit of luck in her entire life. Her birth control failed, she couldn't afford an abortion, and something niggled at her—a tiny desire to raise a child and perhaps, finally, enjoy the feeling of a little light in her life.

No doubt Candace Darrow had little enough experience with that particular emotion. But she did love her son, whom she named Rainier, a rather more posh name than 'Candy,' as she was so often called. But she wanted a better life for him than the one she'd had, and though the demands on her were taxing, between her work and her son, she did her best to stretch her meager resources as far as they would go. She always fed him first, and when he proved to be astoundingly intelligent for his age, she bought him books, too, or when she could find the time, drove him to the public library, where he could indulge his curiosity for a few hours at a time, even if it never seemed enough.

But as such things often do, the relative peace of their lives ended. Candace was killed, the victim of one more murderer stalking the streets of the then-crime-ridden Estolia City. Rainier was shunted off to a group home. In time, he was adopted, but he proved to be a difficult child for each new home that attempted to foster or keep him, and on each occasion he was returned to the government's care. The difficulty may have had a lot to do with his gradually-manifesting powers, or his uncanny intelligence and cool, distant demeanor. Perhaps it was merely his bluntness, his refusal to gentle the truth as he saw it. And he did see it—the kinds of secret thoughts that would rip families apart were easily laid bare before him, and he did not learn in time which things were meant to be said and which ought to remain unspoken.

By the time he turned eighteen and left the group home for college, he had more of a handle on that part, but if anything it jaded him further. He found some ease in the more... socially-acceptable version of his mother's profession, paying his student loans easily with a job as a host, availing himself of the extra he tended to earn when he went above and beyond for his clients—something which nine times out of ten involved having sex with them outside of normal hours.

He only once attempted a long-term relationship, one that ended in shambles and a rather flagrantly-burned bridge, but at least the dalliance served some purpose. Specifically, it introduced him to the metahuman underbelly of the city, where he quickly discovered the other sorts of value his talents might have. It also introduced him to a longtime client, one Luka Forscythe a.k.a. Spectre, and the troubled sidekick who would eventually become Rainier's roommate: Aleksandr Dragovich.

Nowadays, both businesses, so to speak, are booming, and Rainier is quite well-off. In that sense, at least, he supposes he's living up to his mother's dreams for him, even if she'd be disappointed with the cold, hard man he became to do it.

Rainier has of course heard of Captain Estolia's daughter, the intrepid investigative journalist. He's gone to great lengths to make sure she doesn't do any more than hear of him, too. His business is in keeping information to himself and anyone who can pay. Hers is exposing it for anyone to see. The tension is obvious, though they haven't met in person.

In the meantime, Sasha's cool with him, even if he hisses at the first sign of anything closer than absolute neutrality.
