The Long Weekend

The Long Weekend

0 INK

Its Labor Day weekend and you are still working. What you don't know is that there is a killer on the loose and it could be the person right beside you!

1,230 readers have visited The Long Weekend since zhill created it.

Introduction

The setting is the Peltzer Research Facility, which is on a private island owned by the Peltzer Group, which is named after its founder and current CEO Andrew Peltzer. The island is several miles off the coast of Maine and is dedicated towards the researching clean energy by means of sea water. Most employees catch the company ferry to and from the island every day, with a small number of janitorial and security staff left behind on the weekends. This particular weekend however, Labor Day Weekend, finds a small group of employees stranded on the island during one of the worst storms of the year. While the employees seek shelter and try to wait out the storm, they are forced to confront the fact that one of them is a murderer, and that survival might come at a higher cost than they first thought.

Emily's eyes widened as the cook tried to tackle Devin. The attack would have been futile if he hadn't been surprised. She held her breath as they almost came crashing down on them, but was to tired to swear at them. She just laid her head back and blocked out the cooks bumbling apology and Devin's Scottish rage. She paid attention again when Devin spoke to her and she smiled back when he smiled at her.

Then Holly and Gerald came running in with a health pack, and Emily sighed in relief. Finally someone would fix her and she could stop being the center of attention. She wanted to get back to work on designing the new system for the blueprints. Work wasn't just part of her life, it was her life. She didn't want a cut and two broken ribs to take her out of her whole life. She looked up to Holly who looked surprised by the chaos that surrounded her.

"Could you just fix this?" She asked, exasperated. Emily was exhausted from everything. The pain was getting worse before it was getting better. Her eyes were almost pleading the woman whom Gerald had just shoved into the room.

As Gerald approached Holly, her first instincts were to step back, doing so only pressed her back against Pete’s office door.

“Health pack? What in… Gerald this isn’t Tomb Raider.” She said matter-of-factly as he approached her. “What the hell are you talking about!” She exclaimed as he seized her wrist and proceeded to drag her towards the reception area. She attempted to cling onto the doorknob, but failed. “Pete!” She screamed for him as the seemingly nerdy, tech boy, who was just wielding an axe, drug her down the hall. Gerald always seemed like the non-forceful type who was seen and not heard and certainly didn’t drag woman anywhere.

As he swung around the corner and came to an abrupt halt, she nearly collided into him, barely managing not to fall in her heels. She was about to yank her hand from his grip and tare into him with some very un-ladylike words when she turned her head and took in the scene of the reception area.

She didn’t even acknowledge when he said “Here” or that he offered her the first aid kit. Her eyes fell on Samson first. The quiet cook had a look of guilt and possibly shame in his eyes. Then to Emily, the Techie girl who was usually smiling, but was now laid out in a chair bleeding and clearly in pain. And then to…

Holly’s mouth fell open as her eyes landed on Devin. Confusion, anger and worry all played with her facial features. She had a flashback of a night earlier that week. Her arms had been wrapped around his neck, her back pressed up against the pub’s bathroom wall, their lips locked into a drunken yet passionate kiss. Well, she wasn’t sure if he was drunk, but she sure had a few that night. “What are you doing here!” She began to say as Gerald interrupted both her and her train of thought.

"You are a scientist, right? Fix that girl."

She shut her mouth in an attempt to regain her composure. Not many of her coworkers knew about her private life and she certainly didn’t want the fact that someone on this island has seen her naked getting around. The only one who did know, Everett, by law, could not repeat her passionate secrets. She closed her eyes and gave her head a quick shake, causing her curls to bounce around her shoulders. Upon opening them, she focused her attention on Emily.

"Could you just fix this?" She asked Holly.

Holly’s face softened as she could plainly see Emily was in pain. ‘How did this happen?’ she asked herself. “Emily… I’m a biologist, at most… I know very little about anatomy.” She began to stammer and then seen the pleading look in Emily‘s eyes and then answered her more directly. “I’ll see what I can do, Sugar.” her southern tone revealing it’s self.

She looked toward Sampson, purposely ignoring Devin, “Do you think we could get her to the infirmary with out too much further trauma?” Then more to herself than to anyone in the room, “I’ll need her on a table to inspect her wounds. I don’t know much about injuries to the human body, but if it’s just a cut and …” She looked toward Emily’s chest seeing that possibly there was an issue with her breathing, maybe damage to the rib cage, “And a broken rib? Then I might be able to at least get you comfortable until the helicopter can come.” She assumed someone had already called off the island for help.

As Holly began looking at the other girl, medical kit in hand, Gerald knew what it was time to do.

"Ok, You guys stay here. Im going to defend the base."

Fire axe still in hand, he sprinted out of the front door of the facility and noticed it was raining much harder now. But he couldn't be delayed. This was a crisis. The one safe spot on the island had been sabotaged, and surely the person responsible would come back. In fact, he thought to himself, they could be camping the building right now.

Keeping his speed up, Gerald began to run in erratic patterns, hoping to throw off whatever ability the camper might have with a sniper rifle. Soon enough he was back at the building and up the stairs, keys in hand, unlocking the communications room. It was still as he had left it.

Closing and locking the door behind him, he sat on the floor away from the window and waited, axe laid across his lap. "Can't take the flag while I am here," he muttered. After several minutes his heartbeat and breathing slowed significantly and he began to realize he had been behaving wildly. New tears came to his face as he thought about what had happened and the fear of almost dying gripped him. He knew he had to get a message out, but that meant fixing whatever was broken. Fortunately, knowing how to do such a thing gave him a confidence boost that helped him to shake off his panic, and stand to his feet again. He considered going back to the main building, but he was too embarrassed to face them anytime soon. "Besides, there's work to do."

Samson stepped back even further when the man began to yell "What the fuck do you think you're playing at!? You trying to break another one of her ribs? Maybe puncture a lung? Eh? Try anything like that again and I'll show you why people don't pick fights with Scots! You want to apologise? Go help the axe man with the medical stuff. Maybe then we can start fixing things rather than breaking them!" this was not how Samson had expected him to react. Because of that he had no idea what to do next, but luckily he didn't have to think of anything. The "axe man" and Holly joined the conversation.

The chef had seen them before, mostly around diner time, but the girl's eyes were bigger than usual just like Gerald's posture. When Holly was a bit less shocked she asked Samson something “Do you think we could get her to the infirmary with out too much further trauma?” He immediatly began to think about how they could best move the injured girl. "Maybe we could move the entire makeshiftbed and move that to the infirmary," he planned "there we could lift her off the bed if Holly wants that. I suppose Devin can help out, maybe even lift the whole thing by himself if I'm not good enough." he thought, being somewhat insulted "What was he thinking 'I'll show you why people don't pick fights with Scots'. Seriously? A Scot versus a black guy?" he thought while slowly changing his hands into fist, only to be suprised by a sudden severe pain. "But I guess I shouldn't be too hard on the boy, he reminds me of myself in a way, challenging men at first sight."

Then he realised he had to anwser the girl's question, he had already wasted some precious time. "Yes, that doesn't seem like too much of a problem. We just have to move the whole thing towards the infirmary and she wouldn't feel too much pain." he said while looking at Holly after she was done talking. Then he looked at the man, the Scottish boy, and continued "But maybe Devin could do that, because all my sincere good intentions towards the girl haven't been taken kindly up to now. And there's still warm food in the kitchen, if we'd be in need of that." he said, kind off sad at the last sentence.

"Oh, and maybe you could look at this too, girl?" he asked out of nowhere, showing his hand where one of the phalanges was missing. It was still bleeding, but a lot slower than at first. Before he heard the anwser one thought crossed his mind "He isn't like me at all. Even though I've challenged older boys, I've never challenged an, almost, midlife-crisis aged man." while he felt a shiver at the thought of him being 'old'.

Pete sat at his desk, looking up at the woman trying to explain how she had been clumsy with a test tube and broken it. This made Pete slightly angry, but tried to suppress this, since he didn't want to make an enemy of Holly.

Holly then suddenly changed the subject, "Did you not feel the building shake?"

"Building shake...?" Pete said to himself, as he realized that his first bad dream was caused by some sort of shaking throughout the entire building.

A loud clattering sound then came from the hall, through his now partly open door. Holly seemed to almost have a heart attack from the noise, and even Pete was slightly shaken from the strange noise. Holly walked to the door and opened it wider in order to see out. Pete stood and walked around his desk to stand behind Holly and see what was going on in the hallway. The sight was quite astonishing, as a man that Pete could not recall was whacking away at the door to the infirmary, apparently very intent to get something inside.

“Gerald?! What are you doing? What’s going on?” Holly asked the man. Gerald? Do I know that name? I wish I paid more attention to the names of the people that I worked with.

"She needs a healthpack," the man, Gerald, exclaimed as he pushed into the room. Pete was amazed at how the man seemed so panicked. Someone must be hurt very badly. He isn't even making sense: healthpack?

Pete became very concerned as Gerald grabbed Holly and dragged her down the hall. Holly called for Pete, which immediately made him worried. "Let's try to clam down, buddy!" Pete called after the pair as he jogged behind them. Gerald is acting very oddly, he is acting like he killed someone.

As he caught up to them at the corner, he attempted to break Gerald's grip on Holly's wrist, but they had suddenly stopped. Gerald handed Holly the first aid kit that he had been carrying, and let go of her wrist. Holly was shocked for a moment, but seemed to be broken out of a trance after Gerald asked her, "You are a scientist, right? Fix that girl."

Pete tried to take in the scene himself that had stunned Holly a few moments earlier. His eye was immediately drawn to a girl, bloody, lying on the floor. He didn't recognize her at all, and he assumed that she didn't work on anything important, that is, research. There was a man that Pete recognized as a researcher standing next to the girl, covered in blood, probably not his own, and another man standing a few feet away, facing the man. It looked as if they had just been arguing intensely, as they both looked pretty angry. Perhaps one of them was responsible for the injured girl.

As Pete was looking around the room, he didn't notice that Holly had walked up to the girl lying on the floor. She was holding the first aid kit, but Pete didn't know what she would do with it; he knew that Holly didn't have much experience medically, she was a biologist, but she would be able to help the girl more than Pete could or probably anyone else in the room could.

Pete moved up to where the group was standing and saw the crazed Gerald run out of the room, still holding the fire axe. Pete heard Holly ask about moving the girl into the infirmary. It was a very long distance to carry someone who had broken ribs, if Holly was right about that.

"Perhaps we should just leave her here? We might end up hurting her even more if we try to carry her." Pete suggested. "Maybe we could just carry her over to the reception desks over there?"

"Really, it's fine. Just do it quickly, Devin already carried me all the way inside." Emily moaned as they disputed carrying her.

She didn't like being discussed. The chaos that surrounded her was making her dizzy again, but she didn't want to be even more of a hindrance so she kept her mouth closed. Soon she was feeling nauseous and grabbed the trash can next to her as she puked up her fruit loops from that morning. Well this is just my day, isn't it? Emily thought sarcastically to herself as she wiped her mouth on her sleeve and laid back again.

Her leg had become numb at this point and she had taught herself to breath shallowly, so the pain wasn't quite as bad. She kept feeling herself look to Devin, but again attempted not to stare. How could she ever thank the man who saved her life? Sighing, she shut her eyes and tried to block out all the other people in the room. She pictured herself meditating in some beautiful landscape and let go of her pains. She let out a deep breath.

“Wow…” Holly murmured to herself as she took in the sight of Samson’s severed finger. She didn’t have time to think about what the hell was going on around here, as she could plainly see Emily’s pain was growing. Devin? So that was his name.

“Ok, ok, ok…. Just let me think.” Her eyes fell over everyone in the room who seemed to be waiting for her to respond. Turning on her heel she walked briskly out of the reception area and burst through the battered infirmary doors. It was a room she hadn’t spent much time in, but with a quick scan she could see it was much like a clinic or a very small ER room. She walked over to one of the beds, checking if she could move it, thinking it would be easier to bring a bed to Emily then vice versa.

She smiled as she saw that it did. She quickly maneuvered the bed so she could wheel it out the door and down the hall to Emily. “This should answer our problems.” she said to no one in particular as she emerged from the hall, pushing the bed. She may have been small in frame but she was scrappy and didn’t like coming upon an issue she couldn’t resolve.

“Now. If you boys,” she began looking at Pete, but clearly meaning both him and Devin, “would please help Miss Emily onto that and carefully see her to the infirmary.” It seemed like a question but it was more of a demand. She then turned to glance at Samson. “I think food is the last things on our minds”, she simply stated as the loudest crack of thunder she’d heard yet rattled the glass in the windows. “Come with me and I’ll see about that finger.”

At that she left them again, heading back to the infirmary, not waiting to see what the men would do or say. Once there she would start rummaging through the cabinets and drawers looking for the supplies she suspected she would need to fix, or at least attempt to fix, both of her patients. She laughed for a brief moment to herself, “Does being an avid Grey’s Anatomy follower really qualify me for this?”

“Come with me and I’ll see about that finger.” said Holly, walking towards where the infirmary would be. Samson had been a bit disapointed when she clearly waved his suggestion to get some of his, probably delicious, food. But non the less he followed the girl, he didn't like the tension that was in the room. At first he had an unfinished dispute with Devin, besides that there was a girl which was heavily injured and like it just wasn't enough, what did Gerald mean with "Ok, You guys stay here. I'm going to defend the base."

"Could it be that someone had planned all this? The shock wasn't caused by an earthquake, so what could let this whole island tremble?" the man thought "I have to stay focused, maybe I'll find out what has happened." Holly laughed for a second, probably to herself but Samson didn't like the timing. Samson took large paces to get a place besides Holly, and not just behind her. He did this for two reasons, one: he wanted to say something to her, two: she would get unconsciously the message of not standing alone in this situation. Samson himself hated it when felt like everything counted on him and his actions. "Don't worry Holly," he said, smiling at her friendly "I'm sure it'll get better soon."

Samson didn't hear or see what the others did and he didn't want to, he was too busy trying to walk straight. He had lost a lot of blood since the little accident and was getting dizzy now because of it. He looked at his white tunic and saw that it was splattered with blood, he had wiped his hand off on it without noticing it "I should get myself a new shirt as soon as possible." concluded Samson.

This was one of those typical 'Why-don't-I-have-a-sigar-with-me?' moments for Samson. He was a bit stressed and could really use some distraction, but he had done 'the good thing' four, almost five years ago when he stopped smoking.

"So why did you choose to stay here for the weekend?" he asked out of the blue. "I should try to make some conversation, it isn't the end of the world is it?" he thought. He looked at the girl with a reassuring expression while waiting an anwser.

Lori found herself almost running down the stairwell and into the reception room because of a loud gathering of voices. She wasn't sure what was going on - she didn't know where to go or what to do or who to talk to even.

Stopping in the entrance to the reception room, she was greeted with the sight of what she figured was mostly everyone working at the facility over the weekend. She was in a bit of a tizzy herself, so she didn't really take notice of who was in the room at the moment, only that there were a lot of people there.

Her eyes locked on Emily right away, though. A gasp escaped her lips at the sight of the girl; she was obviously in a lot of pain, though it seemed as if the others were doing what they could to help her.

Lori wasn't quite sure she had any abilities to add to helping out. The female just resorted to moving herself to where she felt she was out of the way, before glancing around the room at everyone. "Ummm..." was the only thing to escape her lips, and even at that it was relatively quiet anyway. Her fingers once again began to play with the hem of her white dress, that same nervous habit taking control once more.

But to her, this nervous tick came with reasoning behind it - there was definitely something going on here. Emily was hurt, and everyone else seemed on edge. She figured others might be hurt as well, but she didn't bother even looking around to check.

Devin completely zoned out as soon as he saw Holly. She clearly recognised him, and he thought she looked familiar, but he couldn't quite place her. Was she a work colleague? A fellow researcher perhaps? No, or the others wouldn't have known her as well as they seemed to. Maybe he had met her back on the- Oh shit he thought as he realised where they must have met. He had been in a bar on the mainland, sulking over having to work at this place. He had had way too much to drink, even for him. He remembered seeing her there as well, but after that...
From her reaction alone something had clearly happened between them. He really didn't need this right now. It was all getting uncomfortably complex, like a bad dream that slowly turns to your worst nightmare. He snapped back as soon as she was gone, remembering what he was doing. Thank God she hadn't said anything, he would have to talk to her about it later.
There was now a bed near Emily, and walking over he wheeled it right next to her.
"Okay, this is probably going to hurt a bit." he said to Emily apologetically "Whoever else is going to help me" he looked at Pete, a clear indicator he expected him to lend a hand "I'm ready when you are."
So long as they did it quickly and carefully then there shouldn't be any further complications. Apart from anything that arose within the infirmary, of course. He hated to admit it, but once they took her in there what happened really was out of his hands. Whilst he didn't like the idea of being stuck waiting to see if anyone could help her, he knew that there wasn't really anything he could do either.

Holly had heard Samson come in and stand beside her. As she stood up from digging through the cabinets, he said, "Don't worry Holly, I'm sure it'll get better soon." She offered him a smile in return and she wasn’t positive that it was too reassuring.

“It will get better… as soon as we get you patched up and see that Miss Emily is comfortable. Then… This storm could blow pass and we could all just get back to work.” At this she gave a softer smile and then patted a chair/bed lined with a strip of paper, resembling that of a dentist’s chair.

As Samson was positioning himself on the chair, Holly took a pair of gloves from the mounted dispenser and began laying out a few of the items she had gathered from around the room. She had several antiseptic towelettes, alcohol pads, some various bandages, and she managed to find a suture kit, just in case.

As she laid out and examined these items, Samson asked her, "So why did you choose to stay here for the weekend?"

Holly had filled a stainless steal bowl full of water and sat it on the small work table aside the chair. Her eyes were squinting, as if in deep concentration from behind her safety glasses that she still had on from earlier that day. Gently lifting Samson’s arm, she submerged his hand in the warm water, intending to let it soak for a moment before she would attempt to clean up the severed area. She would then decide if it needed to be stitched or simply bandaged till someone else, someone more experienced in the medical field then herself, could take care of it properly.

She glanced up into Samson’s eyes to give her delayed answer to his question with a little smile of embarrassment for the lull of quiet. “I’m sorry, I don’t usually have live specimens to experiment on.” She attempted to joke with him offering a more genuine smile. “And to answer your question, I work most weekends. Though, it’s usually just half a day on Saturday and then I’m home, alone, reading… but I really wanted to finish up some labs. I knew Pete, he’s one of the head researchers, was going to be working and I guess I just wanted to be here to make sure everything went well and get my labs documented and …” She realized she had began babbling as she removed his hand from the water and started to clean and sterilize the area.

Glancing to his eyes again, he didn’t seem to mind and talking was actually giving her some nerve to perform the task at hand. She usually worked, on her labs anyway, in complete silence or to the songs of her iPod, but talking seemed to be good too. So she continued, “I’m not sure what they tell the… other members of the staff”, she hesitated not wanting to sound like she was down grading the kitchen staff or the janitors, but the researchers and those who worked with them often seemed to be the only people she focused on during her day to day. “The work… the research we do here is really quite amazing… groundbreaking even. We are literally on the verge of discovering something truly great. It will forever change the way we live.”

As Holly was going on about the studies of the facility, she had managed to clean up Samson’s wound, clipped off some jagged pieces of skin, and already began to suture. She had decided to go ahead and perform the stitches, giving that with the increasing violence of the storm, help might not be arriving anytime soon. Stitches would most likely make his wound heel better and at the very least, may be more comfortable then changing bandages all night.

Tying a small knot at the end, Holly was actually impressed with her work. Clearly done by an amateur, but still not bad and it was clean and closed. “There.” She smiled to herself as she put some ointment across the stitches. “Not perfect Mr. Samson,” she admitted in her friendly, southern tone, “But I believe it will do just fine till someone more capable arrives.”

She hadn’t being paying attention to see if Emily arrived in the other part of the room yet, but she imagined that she should be there by now. Holly rose up and began to quickly clean up the area, but hesitated and turned back to look at Samson, giving him a warm smile. “I’m sure that after we get this straightened out, that all of our stomachs will be reminding us of the missed dinner. And Emily might not be able to leave her bed. It would be nice to get something warm and substantial in her belly.” She patted his arm and gave it a gentle squeeze, “If you feel up to it, that is.”

She got the feeling that Samson wouldn’t be the type to lay back in that chair the whole evening. It seemed like he would be happier being able to help out somewhat and she didn’t want him straining himself, so putting together a bite to eat would be perfect for him, she assumed. Letting go of his arm, she continued to clean up and discarded her gloves, replacing them with new ones.

Pete watched Holly roll one of the beds into the reception area and instruct Pete and Devin to put the injured girl onto it and bring her into the infirmary. Pete stood dumbfounded for a moment, Holly was giving him instructions. She wasn't his superior, she couldn't tell him what to do. Even though it was for a good cause, Pete should be the one taking charge in this situation. He wouldn't ever say anything, though, this would just stew in his head for a while.

Devin suddenly broke Pete out of his thought as he said to the girl, "Okay, this is probably going to hurt a bit. Whoever else is going to help me" the man looked over at Pete, "I'm ready when you are."

Pete walked over to the two and knelt down to grab the girl's legs, avoiding her bloody ankle. Looking at Devin, Pete lifted her legs at the same time that Devin lifted her torso and they placed her on the bed. The man started wheeling the bed towards the hallway. Pete stood there for a moment, watching them wheel away.

Suddenly, he noticed a woman standing off to the side. He recognized her, but he couldn't recall her name. He had always thought she was fairly attractive, the type that he normally went for, but kind of on the short side. She didn't work in the labs, so he never really thought much of her. At his moment, however, she looked physically shaken. He wasn't surprised, most people would be slightly disturbed by that sight.

"Are you OK?" Pete asked as he made his way over to her.

Lori watched as Emily was lifted onto the rolling hospital bed, safely in place so she wouldn't roll out of it accidentally. She couldn't keep her eyes on the girl long though - the sight of her, so injured and bleeding, really made Lori's stomach turn. She didn't feel like puking in front of anyone.

'Way to be weak-stomached, Lori. This isn't the time for that...' she told herself mentally. She shook her head slightly, before looking back up at someone who was speaking to her.

"Are you okay?" he asked her as he began moving towards her. She looked out towards the doorway where Emily had just been taken out of, before looking back towards him.

"I think I'll be okay now..." she began, her fingers still playing slightly with the hemline of her dress. "I was never really too good with blood. It's just... I don't know. It always bothered me for some reason. Silly, right?" she let out a nervous laugh, before rubbing her arm lightly.

But Lori stuck a small smile on her face anyway. "Thanks for wondering though... I take it you're okay? You know, after the whole building shaking ordeal. What was that anyway? It sounded as if a train crashed or something."

Emily clenched her teeth and shut her eyes as she was lifted onto the bed. It hurt her, but she kept her mouth shut. She opened her eyes again as soon as she felt the bed start moving into the infirmary. Her head was spinning as she stared at the the ceiling.  Her rib hurt with every breath and it made her almost hyperventilate due to the needs for shallow breathing. She avoided looking down to the wound on her leg because it only sickened her more.

Once she was in the infirmary, she heard the last bit of Holly and Samson's conversation. She really hoped she wouldn't be stuck in bed for the rest of the weekend, but knowing herself she would find some way out of it. She was never the type to sit back while everyone did things for her. It made her nervous. Sighing, she pulled out her iPhone, which thanks to it's metal casing was still intact. She tried to google how to treat a broken rib and was disappointed. No service anymore of course.

"Can we just get this over with, I have a project to complete." Emily asked Holly without even turning her. She was trying desperately not to think about having to get stiches on her leg. Stiches grossed her out even more. She hoped she could find peace in her work. It was the thing she was best at, and it made her uncomforable to think she would ever underwhelm someone with the amount of work she had done.

Suddenly, her mind drifted to the explosion. She hadn't even questioned it yet. Did a generator blow? Then she started to feel guilty. It could have acidentally been her own doing because she had been messing with the network which pretty much controlled everything. But Emily hardly ever messed up, and she wasn't ready to start so she kept her mouth closed.

After cleaning up, Holly began to reorganize the small table once again to prepare for Emily. Once she felt she had all she would potentially need, she wheeled the cart to the other side of the room. Devin had just rolled Emily’s bed in. She met his eyes for a moment and started to offer a small smile. Before the smile could register, Emily spoke up…

"Can we just get this over with, I have a project to complete."

Holly’s eyes tore away from Devin’s and looked down to Emily, “I’ll do what I can, as quick as I can Darlin’.”

Placing the cart into position, Holly began to inspect the girls leg wound. She took a pair of scissors from the table, “I hope these weren’t your favorite jeans.” she stated as she began to cut the material away from the injury. Replacing the scissors she took a cleansing cloth and began to sterilize around the wound. The bleeding seemed to be slowing down and almost stopped flowing from the opening, which Holly assumed was good. Her hands moved with grace as she tried her best not to cause Emily too much pain.

“Well, Sugar… Your choices are wrappin’ it tight and prayin’ or stitches… And probably more prayin‘… My unprofessional opinion is to let me stitch it up. That storm sounds dreadful and it could be on into the afternoon before that chopper gets out here.” Holly was still assuming that someone had called this in and that someone would be on their way as soon as possible, considering there were two people injured.

Samson was listening to Holly which told him why she stayed here for the weekend, and before he could realise she said “Not perfect Mr. Samson, but I believe it will do just fine till someone more capable arrives.” She then focused on other things, cleaning things and such. Samson didn't know what those things were and where they could be used for. He smiled happily at Holly's comment about the food, he wasn't going to lean back all day.

He jumped up, a bit too enthusiastic, "Oke, closed is not over, should've know that," he thought while he paced to the reception desk. Samson took a map and searched for the best path he could take, he didn't want to get lost again. "There should be some food left in the kitchen," he mumbled to himself and began to walk to the building he had been in before the 'accident'.

The man had been right, the dining room and kitchen were exactly the same as how he'd left it. Samson walked to where plastic bags were and began to walk around, searching for the food he had already prepared. The man ignored the pain, although it was a constant, annoying pain, and placed the spaghetti, tomato sauce and the minced meat into the bag's, each thing in a different bag, separately. It was still warm, "Lets have a taste," he thought, eating a small amount of food, "Delicious.

Almost too late he realised he had forgotten the salad, he took another bag, too excited he knew when he bummped his hand against the wall, hurting him quite severe. He filled them with salad and, of course, didn't forget to taste it. His eyes looked content into the room, he just loved to cook, especially when it turned out great.

Emily sighed before replying to Holly.

"You'll need to stitch it then, no helicopters will be coming." The thought repulsed her, but Emily tried to keep composure in her voice. She looked away, trying to put happy thoughts in her mind. But she could only thing of the wound on her leg. She started to think about the explosion, which at least distracted her. Although when it had happened, she was hurdling over the side of a building, she had caught a glance. It was of two high power to just be a blown out generator. The only explanation to the magnitude was a time bomb. But why would someone put a bomb in the building?

None of it made any sense. But, Emily did know it wasn't an accident. Whoever had done it wasn't some random hack, they knew what they were doing. Later Emily would have to find if there was any evidence of the bomb left over. It could give a clue to who could have made and planted it.

Replying to Emily, Holly went on, “Stitches it is and with that rib… Wait. No Helicopter? I know the storm is bad tonight, but it should clear up in the morning‘. You’ll be fine Hon’. Don’t worry.” Holly attempted to reassure Emily. She assumed Emily made that statement because she was hurt and was in some sort of state of despair.

As Holly spoke, she had moved her hands up to Emily’s tiny torso. Gingerly pressing her fingers around her ribcage, she concluded, “Emily, I don’t know much about this but… It seems your not havin’ too much trouble getting’ your breath. I take that as a good sign there isn’t damage to your lungs. Wrappin’ it up and just takin’ it easy is about all I can recommend.”

Turning from Emily, she took some antiseptic wipes from the table and began to clean up her leg wound.

Re: [OOC] The Long Weekend (closed)

I got no ideas for a sequel.

Re: [OOC] The Long Weekend (closed)

Hello! Just a note...

I will be checking in on this and have been about once a week. If anyone still wants to post, Holly will definitely respond/post. I love the idea and still hope to see some death, murder and drama of sorts. :)

So anyway, even if it's slow, just letting you all know that I'll still be watching the thread. :)

Re: [OOC] The Long Weekend (closed)

Well I just started going forward with "One Last Chance" but that is different from a rp since each person will be pretty much writing their own characters story and it wont focus on interaction too much. You were supposed to make a char for that one, so you can still join up if you want, up to you.

I will start working up the idea for the sequel I guess and will let you know when I have a more solid idea.

Re: [OOC] The Long Weekend (closed)

Zhill, if you can either bring this back somehow or start a sequel I swear I will give it my full support. A word of advice for next time (if there is one) would be to skip some of the build up and jump straight to it. That's my opinion, though it probably wouldn't make that much difference in the long run. If you ever want me to take a look at an RP or bounce ideas off me, just shoot me a PM. :)
likewise i'll let you know if I find an RP that I think will meet your creative standards. (any chance of a post in Guards while we're on the topic of other RPs??)

Re: [OOC] The Long Weekend (closed)

Elloit I agree with your sentiments.

I really didnt want to declare this dead, and honestly even after my post my hope was that people would go on anyway. I just got really discouraged because I had this idea that I had never seen done before (even "despots" which is dangerously close to the method i used came after my rp was suggested as an idea) and had so much potential to be worked to a final point of conclusion.

The week deadline was obviously relaxed as we got into the rp because so many people were breaking it and we hadnt even had our first killer post yet. So it wasnt just like I could say "this person is now dead" because it would have totally ruined the surprise effect I was going for in the first place.

I really want to finish this. Im just convinced it can not be done now because there has been such a big lull in activity that to try and push forward would make it so forced that it would be more........more of a superficial conclusion than a natural one.

I still have my sequels (yes that is plural) in mind, and I will say that I can in fact be convinced to run one of them. If I were to do so, however, I would want to make sure beforehand that it would get off the ground and go well.

I dont know what I am going to do RP-wise because I really feel like I have this gap now. I enjoy creative writing so much and now with no object for my attention I feel kind of lost in place like I am turning in circles. I can hope something will come up with openings that is of such a caliber that I can really pour myself into it, but i think the odds of that are worse than roulette at vegas. So it would seem the only viable option left to me is to try to start this again. Im just not ready to do that yet.

Re: [OOC] The Long Weekend (closed)

This is so sad. The Long Weekend was my first RP on this site that I actually got into and really wanted to commit to. It’s a little heartbreaking that it died out so quickly.

A note to Zhill… You have been a great GM! The best I have worked with thus far on this site. Please don’t let this RP discourage you. Hopefully you will find dedicated writers to fully commit to your visions in the future. P.S. Have you scene the preview for Vampires Suck? That was so our idea! Lol!

To Fellow Long Weekenders… I truly enjoyed all of your characters especially the ones that I interacted with. Hopefully in the future we can come together again, when life is less demanding (LOL!) and create something great!

I look forward to working with many of you again in the future! Keep RPing!

Hugs, Sarah Gracie

Re: [OOC] The Long Weekend (closed)

That seems a real shame to me, though I must admit I think part of the problem was the waiting for others to post. I know that I too was guilty of this, it's why I stopped posting- I was already over the week deadline, so my character was supposed to be dead anyway.
I do maintain, however, that part of the problem is, in my opinion, the slow posting. I am NOT criticising anyone for this! Some people simply cannot post that often and I completely understand. But I would like to use another RP that I am currently involved in called 'Witches- The Hidden War' as an example. So far most of us have been posting roughly once every day or two, and I think it is what has helped keep the RP alive. Not only that, but this rapid rate of posting means that the story progresses quite quickly, meaning that it remains interesting and gives people a reason to post.
Once again, I'm not criticising anyone or anything, I'm not even sure why I'm writing this. I guess you could consider it my funeral piece for an RP that had a lot of potential and died well ahead of it's time. :(

Re: [OOC] The Long Weekend (closed)

I am officially declaring this RP as Dead.

Its sad really because the idea had alot of potential and I think it would have been interesting to see how things worked out. It is my opinion, however, that this will never happen.

Please note that this declaration of death means/does not mean a couple things:
1) It does not mean that the RP is closed, it is just dead to me and Im not really going to keep coming back to check the activity on an RP thats going nowhere. Players can continue to post at their leisure/discretion with the understanding that any former restraints, rules, guidelines, etc. are pretty much out the window along with me.
2) This is not because of any particular person. I think that the RP as a whole has failed. In hindsight I wish that I had put more into it as far as IC posts, but I know that had I posted more it would have upset the natural flow I was going for. So the thing just failed to materialize in my opinion.
3) The killer, as far as I am concerned, is never going to be revealed. I was going to reveal the identity of the killer at the end of the RP, but since I dont think we will ever get there I will never reveal the identity. however people decide to play things out from here is totally up to them.

I am really disappointed that this didnt work out because i think the kind of idea i had brought to the RP was enough to keep it active and going forward. But I guess I was wrong. It really (in my opinion) makes a very true but sad statement about us as writers that we cant even be bothered to keep a simple plot going longer than a few weeks. It would be refreshing to see an RP actually reach a point of conclusion in regards to its plot (in my life of forum RP'ing I have never seen it happen) but I know the success of such a thing is directly relatable to the commitment that the writers involved have to the project.

I cant make anyone do anything, but the one thing I would hope comes as a result of this is that anyone who has been following along/reads this will take a long hard look at how they post on here and decide to either involve themselves in fluffy rp's that dont go anywhere and are obviously superficial, or choose to meet the requirements of the story they undertake and make sure it reaches its full potential before joining another RP project.

I dont suppose I will do the sequel (or third part) to this as I had originally planned and am probably going to take some time off until I can find a writing project that I can really dive into and actually has a glimmer of potentially reaching a point of conclusion successfully.

Thanks

Re: [OOC] The Long Weekend (closed)

Let it be known that I will be on a Mission trip in Philly from tomorrow morning at 7:30 am until Friday night at about 9:00 pm. I will not have internet during this time.
But, I will be back on, on Saturday. :)
Until then~

Re: [OOC] The Long Weekend (closed)

I'm here! I'm just busy right now so will be (finally) posting tomorrow! :)

Re: [OOC] The Long Weekend (closed)

hellllloooooo?
is anyone still here? it would suck if this already died, no one was even murdered yet!

Re: [OOC] The Long Weekend (closed)

well you can assume that you followed him into the reception office without having to actually post yourself having done so (since you were away). Interacting with the others would be my recommendation.

Re: [OOC] The Long Weekend (closed)

Hey Zhill. I'm finally feeling better about my whole little situation...

So, Since Syreaa is going to be absent for a while, and I had moved my character to interact with Everette, should I just move my character with the rest of the gang?

Re: [OOC] The Long Weekend (closed)

Nice post PJ.

Ok, because she is absent, everyone assume that Gorie followed Pete into the reception room too. I will be controlling her character (as I said) but not in any major way. Also plan on not seeing Gerald for a while unless you seek him out since he will be focused on trying to repair the damage to the comms room.

But otherwise, you guys can feel free to proceed how you see fit.

Re: [OOC] The Long Weekend (closed)

Thats a safe assumption PJ.

Re: [OOC] The Long Weekend (closed)

My post assumes that since we are in the reception room, there would be a big reception desk. If not, just ignore my last sentence. :)

Re: [OOC] The Long Weekend (closed)

yep..... i just realized that was kinda weird, but Emily is a gamer too so i think she would understand the reference.

Re: [OOC] The Long Weekend (closed)

PS - I had tried to hint at something else (which was probably horribly missed): if anyone has a cell phone, they will now find it doesn't work due to signal interference from the storm.

Re: [OOC] The Long Weekend (closed)

Just FYI (cough pandora cough) its not actually a health pack. Its a first aid kit. Gerald is in shock and can only think about things in gaming terms at the moment. I thought that was obvious, but sorry for not overtly stating it though.

So far this has gone well and looks to be building to some very interesting moments!

Re: [OOC] The Long Weekend (closed)

Syreaa, the psychologist, told me that she was going to have to be absent for a bit. So for now we will assume the dr is running in his room (as stated) and hasnt noticed what has happened yet. If need be, I may take control of the dr (since syreaa did tell me before leaving) to keep him involved, but my control over that character will be minimal.

Also a note to players AND THE KILLER: Syreaa is IMMUNE TO DEATH at this time because she is away and told me about it first. Once she is back, you can kill the junk out of her, but not until then. This is a privilege I will extend to all players under similar circumstances (no this is not an invitation to go absent repeatedly in this RP just to avoid death)
