She was lying on her bed, staring listlessly at the ceiling with the tourniquet still draped behind her bicep. The old needle was clasped in her hand, and her fingertips idly played with it as she drew in a deep breath, exhaling with a smile. This was a good batch, a good, clean batch, and the high seemed better than ever before. Yet, her musings were interrupted by the door opening, and soft footsteps followed. Her little brother’s shadow touched her first, before the boy came to stand at her side, his eyes wide as his longish dark hair brushed against his lashes.

“Gabby,” he said softly, tentatively, reaching to touch her shoulder. She lazily swatted him away, the needle falling to the ground with a clatter.

“Go the fuck away, Alex. I’m in the middle of something.”

In her haze, she hadn’t seen the bruise on the high side of his right cheek. In the haze, she hadn’t cared. She thought she might have heard him crying in the next room, crying for their mom, even crying for her, but she couldn’t bring herself to go to him. She’d never cared about anything more than herself. In fact, she’d cared so little that she’d gotten up, walked away from him and their father and their old life, falling into a pit so deep she didn’t think she could ever be saved. She didn’t think anyone would want to save her.

Her pupils were constricted tight, skin pale as she slowly rose from the couch. Behind Casper, Xander’s expression had turned to horrified surprise, pink splotches appearing on his cheeks as he tracked the girl with his eyes.

“G-g-g,” He couldn’t bring himself to say her name. Gabby could only stare, slowly beginning to shake her head

“Alex,” she finally managed, her eyes widening as the larger boy suddenly started for her, threatening to push past Casper.

Casper's eyes flitted to Sky, in surprise and empathetic fatigue. He glanced between the three, only catching Gabby's rigidness after Xander had retorted, and it was a little bit too late. Xander had pushed past him, narrow as the corridor was, but Casper instinctively reached out to grab his wrist and give him a hard yank backwards.

Instinctively. They'd been put through hell too many times.

"Hey, what the hell, dude? Now's not the time to go fucking predator, alright?" he hissed, though gritted teeth.

"Jesus! You two know eachother, or something?"

His first instinct was to turn and lay one right between Casper’s eyes, but flashes and images of his father played in his mind’s eye, the ugly look he’d get right before he’d hit Xander…and somehow he managed to stop himself. He was jerked back, yes, and part of him prayed that Casper didn’t let go. He needed restraint, especially when he looked from Casper’s bewildered glare to Gabby’s frightened eyes.

She was afraid of him. The thought startled him as though he’d been struck.

“M-m-my sister.” He breathed, staring towards the young woman. Gabby looked like she was about to be sick.

Sky pulled himself to his feet, hesitantly standing somewhat between Gabby and the stranger. He was not an imposing blockade, his slight figure and short stature anything but threatening (not to mention the broken finger and obvious fatigue) but it was the thought that counted, right?

"Let's just... can we like, chill, or something?" he asked lamely, running a hand through his hair with a confused sigh. He shared a glance of 'what?' with Casper, despite not knowing the other boy, because it was clear that they shared in the fact that neither of them had any idea what was going on between their companions.

When Xander spoke, Sky resisted groaning. Family drama. Oh great. He had the best timing ever.

She didn’t know what to say. She didn’t know how she could alleviate the rage that burned behind her little brother’s eyes. She’d known he had a temper, of course, but never had she been in a predicament when the anger had been turned on her. He was bigger now, much stronger, taller and broad in the shoulders like their father had been. She knew if he had the mind to do it he could seriously hurt her.

And she wouldn’t blame him one bit.

Holding up a hand, as if to protect herself from his anger, she looked from Alex to Casper to Sky, and then back to her brother.

“We can’t do this here, Lexi.” She said, her voice trembling. “If you want to talk…we…we can, we can’t just do it like this.”

Xander’s forearm grew stiff and hard as he clenched his fist in Casper’s grasp, and he turned to stare at the blonde.

“I n-need to l-l-le…go.”

"I didn't know." Casper said, looking between Xander and Gabby. His confused anger dissolved into slight regret. "That what you were looking for...?"

He side-stepped, to move in front of the door. He'd seen the boy's fist, and felt his muscles tense up in his hand. He shared a look with Gabby, who had been bracing herself for Xander, and Sky, who had come between them.

Sky, who had wings. Who was an angel. In their house.

"Yeah, you know, I'd like that, Angelboy. Let's just chill."

Casper felt another slight pang of confused anger. Without realizing it, he tightened his grip.

"Where are you going to go? You said you were broke."

“I th-thought she was d-dead.” Xander said sharply, in a way that stung Gabby worse than if he’d hit her. “D-didn’t th-think I’d…of all th-the p-places…” He started breathing hard, tears burning at the corners of his eyes as his eyes turned red.

“Th-this it? N-new family?” he directed to her, sounding more hurt now than angry. “L-leave without a f-fucking word…” He shook his head, leaning against the wall of the corridor with his arm still in Casper’s hand. He glanced again to the winged boy, taking deep breaths as he struggled to keep a handle on his emotions. So many different feelings raced through him: anger, hatred, anxiety, hurt and elation and relief…

“D-doesn’t matter.” He directed to Casper. “I c-can’t b-be here with..with her.”

Gabby looked hopelessly at a loss for what to do. Her look was apologetic to every single one of the men in the room.

Sky resisted the urge to mumble something grumpily about being called angelboy, but decided now wasn't the time. But seriously, did everyone have to call him that? Grumble grumble.

The half-angel stayed quiet, glancing between the others awkwardly. He didn't really have anything to say at this point that wouldn't come across as either assholeish or redundant.

“I should just go. I can stay with Viktor for the night.” Gabby told Casper, mostly. If Xander needed time to chew over her being here, alive, with a lot on their plate to talk about, then she could just go elsewhere. She didn’t want him kicked to the street anymore than Casper wanted him to leave.

“Just…to let him get used to the idea.” She insisted. It seemed like the wise thing to do, considering all that would predictably come of this in the end. Whether it be a huge fight or a call to the police station…well, that depended on how well Xander could control his temper.

“It’s ok.” She insisted. “I…I want to talk this through, but now’s not the time.”

Xander was simply glowering now, his chest heaving as the emotional turmoil burned him up on the inside.

Casper opened his mouth to protest, but he couldn't find any words to help either of them along. He wanted to tell Xander that it wasn't like that, but maybe it was. He wanted to ask Gabby to stay, but he was afraid of what might happen. He didn't have a compromise.

Instead, he nodded, meekly, and let go of Xander's wrist. Both of his hands came up to shepherd the younger boy into the living area, so Gabby could pass through the narrow exit without having to be too close to him.

It was a pathetic thought.

"Dysfunctional fucking families." he breathed. "Gabby, call when you get there. Alright?"

The blond looked between Gabby and Sky.

"Are you leaving him here...?" he pried. "I, uh... You're going to take him with you, aren't you?"

"We'll both go." Gabby said, her lips pressed into a thin line. Taking a deep breath, she looked over to Sky.

"I'm so sorry. We're just going to have to go a few blocks if that's ok with you. Vik's a friend of mine, and he hates Russians, so...it's a plus."

She didn't even bother to grab anything. She just needed to get the hell out of there.

Xander allowed himself to be coralled, taking to staring at the floor so that he could avoid looking at his sister's face. He said nothing, and only briefly glanced to Casper. He might have been ashamed of himself, but his hair had fallen in front of his eyes, and guarded his expression.

"I uh..." Sky blinked, "Okay! Uhm..."

The half-angel put a hand over his face for a moment, sighing wearily into his palm. When was today going to end? Knowing his luck they'd get halfway there and a fucking sixteen wheeler would hit him. That was where today was going, he decided. If he wasn't in a ditch by the end of it, it would mean there'd been drastic change in the time to things-fucking-sky-up ratio.

He looked up again, "Alright. Whatever." Sky followed slowly after Gabby, moving past the other two to grab his bag from the hallway, his wings brushing against them lightly. He glanced back, "I guess I'll see ... well, I dunno. I'll probably see you later... nice meeting you, I think?"

He didn't seem one hundred percent sure of that. Sky looked vexedly at Casper and Xander for a few moments longer before seemingly snapping to awareness and following after Gabby into the night.

Forgive and forget. It was something she was really bad at. She'd never forgiven her father for the way he'd treated his children while they were young, for the way he'd scared their mother away, leaving them all behind. She'd never forgiven herself for what she did to her family, for not having the courage to back, even after so much time.

And, given the way that Lexi had been looking at her when he first saw her...she figured he didn't forgive her either. Maybe he never would.

Walking with her hands in her pockets, and her eyes downcast, she stepped alongside Sky, feeling bad about the way things had turned out for the both of them. She'd wanted to offer him a safe place, but knew, of course, that leaving him with Casper and Lexi wouldn't be fair or right. She was the one he knew. So they'd stick this out together, even if he was apprehensive.

"For what it's worth," she started, "I wasn't expecting shit to go down right then." she mumbled, glancing his way.

"Shit never goes down when you expect it," Sky remarked, pacing a few steps behind Gabby with a slight limp that he was doing his best to disguise. "Because it isn't quite so shitty if you can plan in advance. Takes the element of surprise to really fuck your day up. Extra points for three in a row! Triple you're-fucked score! Go to hell, go directly to hell, do not pass go..."

The half-angel trailed off, staring up at the night sky. The cold was at least slightly numbing on his eye. Gabby never had gotten that cream. He wasn't about to complain about it, not now. Not after that, whatever the hell that was.

"So... bad history between you two, I'm guessing?" he said lamely, sighing. He needed a hit or something. When had his last one been? He couldn't remember.

He mused over the fact that if he was a girl, he'd be pregnant a lot.

She glanced back at him with a half-smile, before falling into step and walking at his pace. “It…it’s kind of a long story, but a really common one for girls like me, I’d guess.” She looked tired, averting her eyes to the sky as he did.

“My dad was a pretty shitty person. I imagine that much hasn’t changed in the last few years. Daddy issues gave me incentive to hang out with the wrong crowd once I started high school.” She sighed.

“Before that, Lexi and I were pretty close. I took care of him because I wanted to, and he needed someone to lean on, and protect him from our dad. I did that until I got mixed up with these friends. I found drugs and parties and a social life that meant I didn’t always have to go home…and it was sort of a relief.” She looked guilty. “I could distract myself, and I did. To the point where I neglected Lexi and ended up just…leaving.” Her lips pursed.

“And I didn’t go back. Not even after I got clean. I imagine that’s why he hates me so much. I don’t know that I blame him, either.”

Sky grimaced, staring at the ground. Gabby was right, it did sound pretty familiar. Shitty parents and broken families were a common feature of the kind of people he hung out with. He didn't comment for several long moments, just walking along beside Gabby. He stuffed his hands into his pockets with a sigh. It reminded him a little of himself. Being the good kid, the really annoyingly nice kind where old ladies would tap his mom on the shoulder and say "isn't he polite?". Yeah, not so much anymore.

"That explains it, I guess..." he said, giving Gabby a sidelong glance. "Too ashamed to go back, right? I know that feeling."

And he did. There was no way in a million years he'd ever be able to face up to his mom for what he put her through.

The half-angel fidgeted irritably, flexing the fingers of his unharmed hand. "My dad was sort of an asshole too, I think. I never knew him much, but when I did speak to him he mostly just told me to fuck off. Turns out angels aren't all great guys."

He ran a hand through his hair and looked across at her, "How d'you think things are gonna... I mean, you can't just let him essentially force you outta the place you're staying long term, right? What d'you reckon blondie's angle on all this is?"

"Casper's got my back." Gabby said with an affirming nod. "But he wouldn't throw Lexi out. He may seem like a hardass, but he cares about people too. Casey kinda put it in us to care about others the way she cared about us." She shrugged and emitted a heavy sigh.

"My hope is that, maybe, I can talk to Lexi and get him to at least be okay with staying in the same place as me. Maybe we can try to fix what we had with time and a little bit of encouragement from the others. If not, well...I'm not sure what I'll do then. I know if Farai ever found out there'd be some serious trouble."

So maybe it was a good thing that her significant other had been gone for so long. There was so much drama, and having them there would only make it worse.

"Eh, in the like five seconds I saw of him he seemed fine enough," Sky said with a roll of his shoulders. He hadn't really had time to form a judgement on the blonde boy, with Xander stealing the show, aside from the vague solidarity of both of them having no idea what was going on between the two siblings.

He stretched his arms and wings out widely, "It's gonna be a party, then!" he declared, shaking his head with a humourless laugh. "How much space is there in that house again? Can I shotgun the couch now or does everyone have to be there for that?"

Despite the humour, Sky's less than enthusiastic tone made it clear he was just putting a brave face on things.

Gabby sighed, putting her hands behind her head and letting her head rest back on her fingers. She meandered along, not really feeling like sleeping, but knowing that Sky was hurting right now, and probably needed to rest at some point. "It's not the worst thing we've been through. I just have to work through years of my little brother's anger and betrayal. I mean, I've not done him any kind of personal harm, yeah?"

There was her humor, too. "If I apologize and mean it, which I will, then things should turn out okay. I don't want to send him away because I don't want him to go back to my dad. And maybe I can make up for being a shit big sister starting now, or whenever we get a chance to talk."

She sighed. "Hard to believe how much he's changed."
