Setting

Eastern G'ael

G'ael is a region of Northern Aslund that few know of, and fewer still have traveled to. Thick fog and rocky shores that dot its coast make it a dangerous region to traverse by sea, while the icy peaks to the west and south provide a formidable barrier by land.

Those that live within G'ael are largely divided into one of two divisions. Eastern G'ael, and Western G'ael.

Eastern G'ael

Eastern G'ael is a dark land, its people dominated by superstition and fear. Well known for its rolling highlands and vast woodland valleys, this region was once a place of great beauty before the land grew sickly. Life in eastern G'ael is centered around the scattered settlements that make up this region. With little to no contact with neighboring towns or travelers, each settlement is self-sufficient and often sport night-watches and strict curfews. Outsiders are viewed with great mistrust and only barely tolerated until they move on. With woodlands teaming with feral werewolves and vampires who prey upon the unwary, this land is not for the faint of heart. The hostile conditions have bred a strong people, both resilient and resourceful, but also heavily influenced by paranoia. There is no regional economy to speak of within eastern G'ael, and coin based monetary systems are non-existent. What buying and selling occurs is done through barter and trade of goods and services.

Magic in Eastern G'ael

Though once prevalent, the use of magic has not existed in eastern G'ael for hundreds of years. During the peak of its uses, the nobles of eastern G'ael began to delve into necromancy and the occult in search of the answers to immortality. Twisted by their misuse and dark purposes, the magic of G'ael grew tainted and with it the land. What magic still exists within these regions can no longer be wielded and simply serves to keep the undead scourges animated. Those reckless enough to try will typically find themselves overcome by its dark and twisted nature, and they themselves will soon join the ranks of the dead as shades and wraiths who haunt the night in search of magic to devour. Mages have long avoided the lands of eastern G'ael.

Werewolves of G'ael

Within G'ael superstition runs rampant, but the nature of these superstitions can vary from region to region - as is seen with the werewolves of G'ael. While the people of western G'ael retain a strong fear and aversion to the vampires of eastern G'ael, werewolves are accepted and even revered for their ferocity in battle, and they play a significant role in keeping the western lands free of undead influence. However, once their affliction has taken hold of them and they become a threat they are typically killed or simply driven into eastern G'ael to join the feral populations. This systematic relocation serves to perpetuate the animosity towards werewolves by the easterners who view them as no better than the undead scourge that plague their lands.

See the Ulfhednar for more details.

Vampires of G'ael

The origin of the vampires within G'ael can be traced back to early necromancy at the hands of nobles. In their search for immortality, they delved into matters of the occult and dark magic. Their twisted experiments gave rise to the early vampires, a twisted abomination caught somewhere between the living and the dead. These creatures fed upon the flesh of the living and were soon ravaging the countryside. These creatures became known as the draugar (singular: draugr). Infused with the same greed and amorality they contained in life, these creatures can typically be found lurking in graveyards, looting the dead or feasting upon the corpses.

Despite early failures, the nobles of eastern G'ael were driven by their greed and a hunger for immortality. Regardless of growing pressure and resentment from the commoners, they redoubled their experiments so as to perfect the nature of the abominations. Their efforts proved successful with the subsequent creation of the vampires. Born out of dark magic and the greed within their human hearts, vampires are creatures driven by sinful desires and power. Almost all of the vampires living within G'ael are of noble birth, or descendants of nobles. This has given rise to the people of eastern G'ael going to great lengths to hide their nobility for fear of the vampires discovering them.

Eastern G'ael lives in a perpetual state of fear and conflict with the undead abominations that plague their lands.

(RP Notes: For those RPing within eastern G'ael please be mindful that eastern G'ael's culture and atmosphere is loosely influenced by a mingling of medieval western Europe, Romania, and fantasy. While other cultural denominations are present as well, they are often viewed as a peculiarity, and are few and far in between and often have quite the tale to tell as to how they came to live in such a place. G'ael is not a particularly advanced region, and it lacks in modern comforts. Any technology that exists in G'ael typically consists of what people carried in on themselves.)

Alcatone walked to the balcony, "Come. Let's finish this quickly."

He stood on the balcony railing looking back at Ettelo. "After everything has happened, I doubt it. I hate you and you hate me. There can be no perfect picture as long as we both breathe." In the cold G'ael air, The duke leapt forward into night, beginning an uneasy journey.

Ettelo listened to Alcatone's words with a grinning heart. She followed behind Alcatone, linked to him by his shadow. As they moved into the night, Ettelo sat and watched Alcatone carefully. The silence she kept was eerie, and threatening; when she was silent, she was thinking.

Alcatone valued the silence that hid behind each of his snow crunching footsteps. The last few days had filled his head with an uncomfortable amount of dread, sorrow, defeat, hope, and joy. All at once. The rush of emotions were hard for him to process at the capacity they arrived.

Every so often, the vampire would sniff the air, making sure he wasn't being hunted. When he was sure, the duke would spend a bit of energy above the trees, searching for light, towers, and sounds. It had been some time since he traveled.

After about an hour of walking, he finally spoke to Ettelo. " Why now? Why after all this time do you want a place of your own? And why must you do it in such a fashion that makes the process difficult, painful, and dreadful for all of us? It could've been simple, but..." He quietly shook his head, "Nevermind. I already answered my question. I know you will spit another insult, and then mock me."

He shook his head once more

The Shadow looked over to Alcatone, and took a heavy sigh. No matter what shadow she possessed, she always mirrored the body of the host she shared. Sometimes, it was easy to see the pain in Alcatone's eyes as he looked at the distorted image of his wife. However, he never understood that Ettelo was just as much a part of Olette as a whole soul.

"I've always been soft on you, Alcatone," she muttered plainly. Ettelo folded her arms as she glided beside him. "I screwed with your mind, but you were never a threat to me. I seldom hurt Olette, but it is in my nature to play with you. You're just so...quick tempered, it was almost a guaranteed laugh whenever you opened your mouth."

The Shadow looked down, musing as she gazed. "But I've waited far too long to be able to walk this plane and have my own rule. I want to control the shadows, puppeteer the peoples of this world...but I couldn't. I couldn't figure out how to unravel the binding of my soul to Olette's. You should know better than anyone with that piece of metal you call a weapon that souls are called to their bound object, we cannot simply waltz into anything we choose. Humans and creatures alike would stand no chance. Don't be so quick to insult me, Alcatone. I know you don't care for me but you seem to willingly forget that I am also one of the greatest tools you have."

Alcatone sighed as she finished. There were times she aided him in his fights. He was just never sure of it was genuine or to keep Olette alive so she could stick around. Yet at the same time, his family had been tortured by her more than he could remember.

The Duke did realize, she didn't kill Nieve like she claimed to. He wasn't going to trust her, but she was right.

Alcatone let out a soft, deep growl. He wasn't angry. Just unsure of what to say. Whatever was going to happen from these next hours, would change things. For better or worse, he did not know.

"The thought has crossed my mind. I don't want to watch her grow old and die. Yet I don't want to condemn her to this ashen, blood dependant state. My children already are." He could smell a fire in the distance along with a few live bodies as well.

Alcatone didn't have to look at Ettelo to know what face she was making. "No. Either path of immortality results in suffering."

The vampire began seeing a large wall through the dense trees. He spotted four guards at the wooden gate, and stopped, looking at Ettelo. "Don't do anything that'll cause and uproar. These people hardly see magic. It took a damn long time to get my people to accept it, and I doubt they'll react well to a vampire and his living shadow within their walls."

"You know me so well."

Alcatone emerged from the cover of the tree line, making his way to the guards. Two of the guards eyed him carefully whole the other two met with him halfway. The leader, Alcatone decided, spit the filth he was chewing onto the Duke's boots.

"We really don't like beggars hanging around outside." The guard motioned to Alcatone's tattered coat. "Turn around and don't come back if you know what's best for yah."

Alcatone took a deep breath and looked at his boots then back to the guards. "Look, I know I give off the poor man vibe, but I assure you that I am far from it. Just looking for a place to stay." The Duke had only been here for five minutes and was already displeased with the reception.

Ettelo turned her attention to the guard on the far left, easily the weakest one. He was the man in the pack who wouldn't move unless the others did, and assuredly he'd move the slowest. Her violet color stood out easily in the darkness that surrounded her and the Duke, and she kept her word. Her eyes unmoving from the guard, she folded her arms and sighed.

In an obvious display of power, the leader threw his fist into Alcatone's jaw. The Duke closed his eyes and began laughing. He didn't know why. Maybe from all of the recent stress or lack of sleep, but he laughed and laughed.

The guards looked at each other with concerned looks. The leader threw yet another punch but the vampire was ready. With unnatural speed, Alcatone spun around the guard's attack, immediately pulling him into a chokehold. He then kicked the back of one of the legs so the guard fell to his knees. The other guards drew their swords, the weaker one trembled.

Alcatone smiled at the rest of them. His hand reached into his coat, and produced a few silver trinkets. " Now... I believe I was being let in?"

The weak one looked back and forth to the other guards. "Do it!" The leader yelled, "Kill him! Now!" Alcatone tightened his grip, soon knocking the man unconscious. His body fell with a satisfying thunk. The Duke tosses three of the trinkets to the remaining guards. "Well? This hospitality of yours leaves one wanting. Open the door."

One of the guards barked orders at the other two to pick up the rather large body while he opened the doors. Alcatone sighed, whispering, "So far so good, right?"

"Please," Ettelo scoffed, "that was hardly annoying. What kind of guard rushes a stranger not knowing a thing about him? Ridiculous."

She lurched for the weakest guard, snatching him by his arm.

"I'm taking him with us," she said, smirking at the cowering man. "I'd like to have an escort who knows where he's going."

Alcatone sighed and nodded. "Sir, we will be commandeering you from your post for now. I suggest you do as we ask. That grip you feel on your arm will get a whole lot worse."

Sweat seemed to be an endless supply for the guard. He nodded nervously and led the visitors in. "Where... Are you g-going?" His eyes darted around looking for an out.

Alcatone motioned at the new kingdom they entered, "The ruler here. Your boss. Take us to him" The area here was uncomfortably quiet. Not even the tavern across from them seemed to hold life.

Ettelo's eyes were swimming around the guard in her grasp.

"You're not making a very good impression on your neighbors, Alcatone," she said coldly. "Wouldn't it be terrible if they were to remember you storming through with predetermined chaos when I assume power? I'd be careful..."

"They don't even know who I am. Besides," he looked at the guard, patting him on the back, "I'm not here to overthrow or kill anyone. Your friend over there was rude. He spit on my boots and mocked my jacket."

The guard still watched him with a frightful eyes. "I, um, if you say so? I don't...trust you."

"Good." Alcatone said with a smile. "Never trust anyone who just took out your leader and makes demands of you. Now let's go."

As they walked up the road, Alcatone couldn't help but ask about the quiet.

"Curfew," the guard began, "Our Madam commanded it. Most of the townsfolk were conscripted into the guard....by force. Food is rationed." He sighed. "We're all pretty hungry."

"Madam Sevra Asterion. She rules here." They neared the castle. It was dark except for the moonlight that was cast from above. Guards surrounded it, many with distant or angry looks about them. Of Alcatone wanted, this place would be his without any effort. Ettelo might as well already call it hers.

They arrived at the castle doors at last. Sandal, the guard called himself, explained that an Alcatone Ragnovah requested audience with her majesty. The guard disappeared into the castle, returning in what seemed like an eternity.

Sandal led them inside the dim castle. Hallways were adorned with various rulers of the past. Many of the paintings were torn and dirty. Once they reached the throne room, it was a completely different atmosphere.

Torches lined the walls and pillars within, giving the room a considerable amount of light. The throne itself was a bright gold with lions and other animals etched into it's surface. On the throne sat the Madam. A crimson gown with an excessive amount of frills accompanied with her own golden mask. Whatever the mask depicted, it was hideous, Alcatone thought. She looked on with a smile as the visitors arrived, Sandal still leading. The guard deemed to tremble more than before.

"Here you are....My Lady" He bowed to his ruler. She motioned for him to come forth and stand next to her.

"And what do we have here? Common trash?"

"Ah," Ettelo smirked, gliding in front of Alcatone, "I see you recognize us as equals. I find it peculiar that you let 'common trash' into your court with so little inquiries for me and my companion here, but I see that it serves no mystery now looking at the state of your castle."

As Ettelo finished, Sevra produced a dagger an rammed it into Sandal's gut. She dug it in deep and pushed Sandal back. The boy collapsed, clenching the dagger in his hands. Two armor-clad guards dragged him away.

"Equals? No, my dear." The woman wiped her hands with a servants gown, to the girl's horror, and motioned to a cloaked figure. He whispered to her and she nodded.

"Vampires and spirits are as disgusting as they come."

Alcatone looked at her with a hint of surprise. Ettelo was obvious, but he gave no evidence of his vampirism. "You didn't have to kill Sandal....and how do you even know what I am?"

Sevra let out a sarcastic giggle. "I despised that boy. Dropping his weapon when demonstrating my power to the kingdom. Always stuttering and weak. It felt good. How I longed to remove him from the picture."

"No," Ettelo narrowed her eyes at Sevra, "you needed an excuse to show your power. You don't fool me. Any ordinary man can kill another with a butter knife, a ruler can kill a man without lifting a finger. Congratulations, queen...it seems you are seemingly ordinary."

Ettelo stood firmly on the ground and crossed her arms. She challenged Sevra to a duel of wits with her violet eyes narrowing on her, but she knew it was only a matter of time before the Queen snapped. Humans were remarkably effortless to offend.

Alcatone ears perked up. Six? Maybe seven guards behind them? He kept his gaze forward to Ettelo and Sevra.

"Sometimes spilling a little blood yourself is good for the soul. As for you vampire, my associate here learns all that he can about neighboring lands. You, Alcatone Ragnovah, are a pathetic excuse for a ruler. Your shadow here caused quite a bit of distress in the castle I hear."

She smirked, "Is he your little pet? Hmmmm where's the frail, little princess? Did she die on the way here? Perhaps your filthy half-breed children did too."

Alcatone's fingers twitched.

Ettelo's shadowy hand grasped Alcatone's arm, but it wasn't a menacing hold. She did her best to calm Alcatone; whenever his family was thrown in the mix, it didn't take much for him to lose his mind.

"Would you like to perform your queenly duties, or do we have to sit here listening to 'Grandma's Story Time?'" Ettelo sneered. Her lips curled upwards as she watched the Queen try to harass the Shadow and the Duke, but she was underestimating them wholly. There was nothing this woman could do that would burn Alcatone; he had been forged and perfected by Ettelo's shallow grasp.

And the Shadow...well, she was never threatened. She was challenged, and she always won.

Alcatone, for a brief second, was confused by Ettelo's touch. It was strange and foreign to him. Usually he would be tossed aside by now. The queen's grin snapped him out of it. He gave Ettelo a "I'm about to give her five seconds" look.

The guards behind them were close now. Whether they were there for intimidation or to strike, he did not know, but his main concern was the Queen's cloaked friend. Something smelled familiar about him. He whispered to Ettelo, "I know that man from somewhere. Keep your eyes on him. He's our biggest problem."

"I'm sure my advisor here would love to deal with you both," the queen held her grin, "He's a...hunter of sorts." She nodded to the man. He reached into the cloak, tossing out a few fangs and werewolf ears.

Alcatone had only run into one other man like this in the past. Hunters were relentless in their pursuits. The Duke couldn't figure out who this one was. "You know this won't end well right? Whatever you're planning against us, you'll fail. I'm not here to kill, but I won't hesitate to make a point." He sniffed the air, "Most of your men aren't even close to warriors. Outfitting them like they are is a mistake. One of my soldiers is more than a match for five of yours."

Sevra giggled, "Oh, I have my ways." She stood and flicked her hand. More guards flooded into the throne room. "You won't be returning, vampire. The hunter will have you both, and I will have your kingdom. Your children will grow with leashes and your wife," Sevra glared at the Duke, the look in her eyes and her words boiled his blood. "Your wife will be my little play thing. And all the while we cut you apart in front of them. After all, when you waltz in here like you own the place, I will make you suffer."

Torchlight would occasionally catch Alcatone's green eyes, causing an eerie glow. He wanted to tear her apart. His calm was waning, growls becoming increasingly frequent
