Setting
Dominant Species:
The world is inhabited by two dominant races, the Myrans and the Skagrim. The Myrans are similar in appearance to elves, and the Skagrim to dwarves, and both share rule over the planet with the Ahrians, though the Myrans are slightly more powerful as far as armies and land is concerned. They have been given weaponry by the Ahrians, but are not admitted into the Ahrian military as of yet, given their lack of experience with that sort of thing.
"Shadow, you don't have to hover so close." Jessica said, her voice soft, but firm. Shadow's eyes were blind, white, with no irises, and she looked up at Jessica with her lips rounded into a small 'o'.
"It's so bright." Shadow whispered. "So bright. So cold."
Jessica squeezed her hand. "It'll be alright."
"He tastes old, Jessie."
Jessica's brow furrowed as she looked ahead. An old man sitting on the side of the road.
"Leave him be, Shadow. There's no reason to bother him."
"But I'm hungry!"
"No, you're not."
But they had to walk past him anyway, and the whole while Shadow looked wistfully towards the man with her strange, blind eyes. Jessica's massive wings looked heavy, but she carried them well as she walked up, and eventually came to pass the other. Jessica firmly took Shadow's hand to keep her from misbehaving.
"He's OLD, Jessie!"
"Quiet, Shadow. You're being rude."
Jessica turned back to look at the man, her eyes a strange, cobalt blue. "What are you doing all the way out here by yourself?" she asked. "Are you safe?"
Jessie never traveled on her own. She was so fragile, so vulnurable, and so was Shadow, but together they made a rather formidable pair.
Jessie squeezed Shadow's hand to keep her quiet.
"Will you be alright?" Jessica asked. "Why are they so interested in pursuing you anyway?"
"Would you like me to stay and help?" she asked. There was no sense of urgency, just wonderment, like she really couldn't understand what this man was getting at in the first place.
"I think he's going to fight." Jessica replied, stepping up to the gentleman's side. Shadow slunk back, sitting on her heels and wrapping her arms around her knees. She didn't like the idea of fighting. "I don't know that I'd feel right just walking away." she told him.
"I've never been one to do as I was told, sir. Shadow. Hide."
The other woman did as she was asked, turning to disappear into the woods to hunch down in the shadows. Jessica's eyes glowed, the strange cobalt depths swimming as she waited, looking so much like the angel she wasn't.
"We've got you no ya damned murderer!" "Who or what is that with him?" "Don't know, don't care. Just kill the bastard before he gets away again!"
The old man continued to walk toward the rapidly advancing group. within seconds they were withing striking range. It was then the old man took action. Just as a spear came level with his head, the elderly warrior dropped into a squat. His blade flashing to the side to strike the closest horse on the leg. The beast gave out a scream and tumbled, taking the panicked rider down with it. The old man, waited, and repeated the action with the next horse to get near.
Fifteen men on horses, and the first thing he needed to do was get them down on foot.
Something sliver-thin shot from a tiny hole in the top of her arm, striking the closest horse in the flank. It reared, the leg giving out as the rider went tumbling down.
With calculated precision, she aimed for the second horse, and took it down in a similar fashion.
The wings frightened the horses, but that didn't keep her from throwing one of the other riders down, taking his spear, and making a charge for one of the last soldiers that had stayed on the horse.
She adjusted her hold, threw the weapon, and watched the man fall.
However, the older man still had a problem that needed fixing. Jessica turned the horse, dismounting and preparing to come to his aid, when she saw the flash of a white-skinned figure coming flying out of the trees.
"Shadow! Don't!" she shouted.
The other girl gave her no heed. With inhuman speed and precision, the girl launched herself at the nearest rider, tearing him from his horse and pressing his back to the ground. Ignoring his mad flailing, she immediately dipped her head, and sunk her teeth into his neck.
The old man looked once, and snorted before making to strike another man in the leg.
"They obviously don't get around much." she muttered as she began to hear them mutter about monsters. Shadow finally pulled away, smiling a wide grin with bloodied lips, and looked to tear another man off of his mount.
Her first victim was dead, eyes frozen wide.
The old man cursed, dodging another spear and slashing a down on a sword that came next. This was not going the way the old man wanted it too.
