“The man who believes that the secrets of the world are forever hidden lives in mystery and fear. Superstition will drag him down. The rain will erode the deeds of his life. But that man who sets himself the task of singling out the thread of order from the tapestry will by the decision alone have taken charge of the world and it is only by such taking charge that he will effect a way to dictate the terms of his own fate.”

"But any place and all places can be The Twilight Zone" The TV flickered ominously and PJ clutched the James's throw pillow closer to his form. The traditional Twilight Zone theme began to get louder and louder - CRASH - PJ jumped nearly six feet off the couch nearly taking the decorative coffee table with it. "Damn it" He muttered under his breath as he collected himself and made his way to the basement door. Before opening the door he hesitated and stopped, pressing his ear against the door slightly the muffled voices of the kids flooding through the thin oak door. After contemplating for a moment he finally cracked open the door and peeked inside. He could barely see the outline of the kids past the stairs leading down to the basement. "Hey! Is everything alright down there? Fletcher didn't break anything did he?" He called out raising an eyebrow.

Wes all but yelled at his friends as they raced to go check the dice he had rolled that had bounded off the table and tumbled under the tall book shelf. If they weren’t careful—CRASH. Great. They weren’t careful. His book collection all but reigned down on his scuffle of friends while they still frantically searched to find the dice. It was a matter of life and death, however. If the dice had landed on anything but a 3 or 11, the Demogorgon would eat every single one of their heads. Ugh! None of this would have happened if Luke hadn’t slammed his hands down on the table earlier which caused the dice to fly off. Wes with all the frustration he had built up over the course of the night hit his forehead on the fold out table they had set up for their Dungeons and Dragons game. Trying his very hardest not to yell and flip out, he only lifted his head up when PJ’s voice carried down the steps to the basement. Sliding his reading glasses back up his nose, Wes hollered back, “nothing’s broken other than my patience!” Luke popped his head out from behind the couch rolling his eyes at the boy. “Oh can it Wes, I don’t see you looking for the dice”. Wes shot him a look of complete exasperation as he replied, "that's because I'm the game keeper and way more civilized than you."

PJ shook his head a hint of a smile on his face, “alright, your parents should be home soon so you guys better start cleaning up”. As if on cue, Wesley's mother and father strolled through the front door after struggling (slightly drunkenly) to get the keys within the door. PJ's attention strayed from the basement to the door as he smiled at the rather intoxicated Mr. and Mrs. James. Mr. James was the first to greet Pj as he hung his coat on the door, "PJ! Nice to see the house hasn't burnt to the ground yet. Hope the kids haven't been into too much trouble". PJ let out a small laugh, "No, not anything too drastic. I didn't let Wes anywhere near the oven this time, lesson learned". He couldn't believe the boy actually tried to bake a cake on a 500-degree level for 50 minutes. He was lucky all that happened was some serious smoke inhalation and a burned towel.

"Found it!" Christopher's voice rang out from behind the half fallen bookshelf, proudly holding the lost die in his hand. "Thank god, I couldn't stand to hear those two goons fight anymore" Charlie spoke shooting a curt glare at Wesley and Luke. Wes grunted in response to Charlie's comment. Standing up from the table, he walked over to Christopher and asked "did you see what number the dice landed on?" He was honestly a little nervous to see what would be the fate of their party. Dungeons and Dragons was serious business, after all. Christopher shifted back and forth on his heels as all eyes in the room shifted to him, he saw what was on the dice but he knew none of them really wanted to hear what it had landed on. "Oh, uhm I actually erhm didn't catch what it landed on". There was a collective groan of annoyance from the others.

A knock at the door startled Mrs. James out of a small giggle fit as Mr. James retold a story about how once when Wes was a toddler, he cut himself on his science set and ran up and down the hallways screaming about how he was dying while blood dribbled from his finger and splattered on their new wall paper. PJ was grateful for the sudden knock on the door distracting Mr. James from his usual banter. Opening up the white painted chipped door, Audrey Fletcher offered a small smile as she was ushered in. "Hey mister and Mrs. James. Is Luke ready to go?" Audrey felt absolutely drained from the stupid date she was just on. She honestly didn't want to go in the first place, but her friends pressured her too. The guy was on the basketball team, and while he was nice, he could barley hold a conversation. Not that conversation was what he was really after. Audrey basically had to tackle him to stop him from throwing himself at her at the end of the night. "He should be, PJ dear would you mind getting Luke for Audrey?" Mrs. James said turning her gaze to him. "Yeah, of course... Hey Audrey" He offered the girl a small rather dorky smile before heading to the basement door. Pj only ever saw her when she came to get her brother and occasionally at school. She was rather quiet and definitely not apart of the crowd that he hung out with, but he gathered that she was sweet. Audrey offered back her own small "hey" to PJ, slightly curious if he knew the boy she had just gone on the date with. They were kind of in the same "sporty" group. Oh god, she hoped he wouldn't hear that she knee'd the kid in the balls. Now she definitely wasn't looking forward to school. Mrs. James gave Audrey a gentle nudge with her shoulder, both eyebrows quirked up promiscuously as she stated "PJ is such a nice boy, isn't he?" Great.

PJ ventured down to the basement, his eyes widening slightly at the mess. "What happened down here?" Luke gave him a cheeky smile, "The demogorgon". Charlie piped in after him, "Oh Peej it was horrible, he destroyed everything". PJ let out a small laugh staring at the rather innocent faces of the kids. "Really? That sounds terrible! Did they demogorgon happen to have the name Luke Christopher Charlie Wes?" This wasn't the first time the kids had blamed their mess on one of their imaginary game characters. "That seems like a pretty long name for a monster" Luke said sarcastically, "I'm pretty sure its name was Wesley James". Wesley threw up his hands rather dramatically as he exclaimed, "I had no part of this! It was all those three!" Charlie whipped her head around to Wesley, "Excuse me? I had no part in this James. It was you three". Wes raised his eyebrow at the girl, stating firmly, "I don't recall running head first into a book shelf like some blonde girl I know." PJ rolled his eyes and gestured to Luke, "Alright you guys can sort this out later, Luke, time to go your sisters here". Luke let out an overexerted sigh, "Great, Audrey the Monster is here. Can't wait to here about how disastrous her date went tonight". PJ covered his mouth sightly to keep from laughing, "Fletcher. Move it". Luke frowned and trudged his way upstairs rather angrily, he stopped at the top of the stairs and leaned over the banister, "see you guys tomorrow!" The boy made his way up the stairs and glared when he saw his sister, who was currently getting chatted up by Wesley's parents.

"You two as well, I'm sure your mom is almost here Charlie" PJ stated nodding to the two stragglers. Charlie grabbed her coat and made her way over to the stairs, "I won't forget that comment James" She threatened before heading upstairs followed by PJ. Wes stuck his tongue out at her. The room was rather quiet now with just Christopher and Wes. Anyone could tell the quietest boy had something to get off his chest, he was fidgeting like a mouse. Glancing over at his friend, Wes's arms that were previously crossed over his chest dropped to his side, immediately reading the tenseness in his face. "Hey, is everything okay, Chris?" He questioned, taking a small step forwards towards the brown haired boy. The sound of hands claping together startled him as Wes heard his mothers voice call, "Come on, everyone up the stairs! Mama is going to bed!" Christopher hesitated slightly as he looked from the stairs to Wes's concerned expression. He set the dice on the table slowly, and guiltily looked at his friend. "I lied. I did see what the dice rolled. It was a four. The demogorgon, it got us". Wes's eyes locked onto the four on the dice. Was it unfortunate? Yes. Did everyone have to know? No. Walking towards the table, Wesley picked up the dice and inspected it for a short second, before setting it down onto the table with the 3 facing upward. Turning to look at Chris with a wide grin, he said "No it didn't. See? it landed on three. We beat it." Christopher blinked slightly as Wes changed the four into a three. If no one knew it was a four that meant they were fine, right. Wesley always had Christopher's back, if Wes believed it was a three then so did he. Clapping his friend on the back, Wes's grin grew as he hollered, "I'll race you upstairs!" before running rocket speed up the pick carpeted staircase. Christopher grinned at Wes and ran up the stairs after him, "Hey! You got a head start! That wasn't fair!"

Luke walked past Mr. James grabbed his sister's hand turning back to offer his friend's father a smile. "Thank you for letting me stay over Mr. James, Audrey and I better get going. You know how my mom is." Audrey slung her arm around he little brothers neck, squeezing lightly. "Bill me for any damage he did. I'm still not sure the whole cake incident was Wesley's fault and not his." Mr. James laughed and ushered the two to the front door. "Of course, of course. Wouldn't want Maura getting worried. Have a good night you two! Drive safely!" He dragged his sister outside and to the car rather aggressively, "Come on Aud, the faster we get home the less I have to hear about your date". Audrey rolled her eyes as she opened her car door. "You sure about that? I kicked him in the nuts." Luke's eyes widened at Audrey, "Holy shit Aud you punched him in the nuts?" He then clamped a hand over his mouth, "I mean crap. Holy crap". Trying to cover up his little slip he quickly changed the subject following Audrey's gaze to the house. Audrey snorted, saying "this scenario calls for a 'holy shit' exclamation." Peering at her brother, she asked, "hey, does Chris have a ride home?" Luke continued, "yeah, uhm, I'm pretty sure Henry's at work but Chris can just ride his bike home". Audrey stared at the door for a couple more seconds before shrugging her shoulders. "Alright, get in the car, and if you tell mom and dad that I kicked someone, you're next." Luke didn't give up a fight after that and got into the car.

Wesley watched as Luke and Audrey left in the car, before turning to his increasingly louder parents. "Alright! I'll wait with Charlie and Chris, you guys go to bed." If he had to hear them reiterate anymore embarrassing stories, he was going to jump in front of the Fletcher's car. His mother pinched his cheek before saying, "Fine, fine. Get home safe kids! Jim, pay PJ will you?" Mr. James nodded as he opened his wallet, pulling out whatever cash he could see in his drunken slate. Slapping it in PJ's palm, he exclaimed "Thanks again, son. We have a party next week, so expect a call from us!" PJ's eyes widened at the couple of twenties Mr. James laid in his hand, it was more than he had ever been paid. He opened his mouth to ask Mr. James if the amount was correct but the couple had already headed upstairs. A small ring of the doorbell interrupted the group yet again and PJ opened the door to Mrs. Hoffman, a short but simple woman. "Hey mom!" Charlie grabbed her things and gave her mother a small hug. "Charlie honey, we have to hurry, I left your father to finish the chicken and you know he can't cook to save his life". Charlie giggled and turned to wave at the boys hanging her gaze a little bit on Wesley. "Bye guys, see ya tomorrow." Wes gave a small and awkward smiled back, waving his hand with a flick of his wrist trying to act nonchalant. With that the two girls were out the door leaving PJ, Christopher, and Wes.

"Well, I better get going too. Henry is going to be back from work soon and he always gets worried when I'm not there" Christopher said shifting his weight back and forth from side to side. "Are you sure you don't need a ride buddy?" PJ spoke, honestly ready to go home himself, the kids always wore him out. "Yeah, I promise, I ride my bike home a lot". Wes yawned, stifling it behind his hand. "Come on PJ, Chris is a big kid." Pj shoved his hands into his pockets and nodded, "alright, just be careful ok?" Christopher nodded and waved shyly at Wesley before heading out the door.

No one knew that was the last time anybody would ever see Christopher Byrd.

"alright, just be careful ok?" Christopher nodded and waved shyly at Wesley before heading out the door.

Christopher kicked off the curb and flipped on the little spotlight his mother had attached to his bike last year. As he pedaled down Meadowmere, Wesley's street, he began to pick up speed and rested his feet on the two pegs near the front wheels. His house was the farthest from the others, nestled into the Hawkins woods.

It was just a routine ride home, something that was almost subconscious to him as he weaved through the streets of Hawkins and towards the outer parts of town. It was getting rather dark, and by this time the town started to really die down, save for the occasional car. Chris liked to think of it as the town was 'falling asleep'. As he approached the break in the road in which he normally went right, it brought him past the school and to his house, there was a car sitting at the stop sign blocking the path, he didn't have enough time to break so he was forced to turn left. He knew this path as well, it brought him past the Hawkins lab and to home but he never took it out of fear. There were always weird rumors circulating around Hawkins Lab, and his mother might've said a few times to avoid it. Tonight, things just felt different, somehow. So he wasn't to bothered by the shortcut.

His mind wandered back to his friends, and the D&D game. A four, even if Wes's said it didn't matter the thought still fluttered around in his head. As he thought more and more about it, a feeling arose in his stomach, one that wasn't good. He shook his head slightly and looked back up at the road, trying to dispel the negative thoughts in his head. It's a good thing he looked up, or he would've ran directly into it.

Christopher slammed the brake gear of his bike sending both him and the bike skidding across the concrete. A sharp pain screamed in his right leg and he cried out softly immediately grabbing his thigh. It didn't take him long to remember the reason why this happened in the first place and he slowly raised his eyes to the thing that had stopped him. He opened his mouth to scream but he was met with silence.

He quickly scrambled up his leg protesting in pain. He needed to get away, away from the thing. He broke out in a sprint into the forest, ignoring the pulsing pain in his leg, just pushing forward. Branches and vines grabbed at his face and arms, but he refused to stop running. He couldn't hear anything behind him, but he just knew, he felt that the thing was still following him.

When he finally broke into a clearing, he almost cried in relief when he saw his house sitting in the distance. He ran faster than he had, and when his hand finally touched the door knob he realized he was crying. He threw open the door and quickly locked and bolted it, taking a few cautious steps away from the door. It was quiet, too quiet. Dread started to set in as he realized the lights in the house were off, "Henry!? Henry?!" The dread grew and grew as he opened his brother's door to find the room perfectly empty. His brother must've doubled up his shifts. He was alone. Alone. His mind immediately went to the phone in the kitchen. He ran and dialed 911, it was the first one he could think to call. However, instead of dial tone it was just static. "Hello? Please, is anyone there? There's something after me, please" His voice pleaded over the phone, but he was just met with static.

Then he heard it. A horrible noise coming from outside the house. He dropped the phone on the ground and ran to his room locking the door. He didn't realize that his leg and arm had been bleeding this entire time from the fall, he was in shock. He didn't even turn the lights on as he dropped to the ground and crawled under his bed.

It was quiet for a moment again, other than his uneven and panicked breathing. Then he heard the front door open, to which he clapped a hand over his mouth and clenched his eyes shut. His heart was beating through his chest out of fear. He had locked that door, and the thing had opened it, how was he sure the smaller lock on his door would even hold. His hands started to shake uncontrollably as something scraped at his door, and he heard the lock click. Please go away, please god go away And then it did. Everything was quiet, and when Christopher was finally brave enough to open his eyes he saw that from under the bed his door was still closed. This must be my imagination. It was all my imagination. He repeated the thought over and over until some part of him started to feel better again.

This time, when something closed it's claws around his ankle and dragged him out from under his bed and into the darkness he screamed.

He didn't stop screaming.

EARLIER THAT NIGHT
━━━━━━━━━━━━

Oleander couldn't take it anymore. She felt as if she was on the cusp of falling apart. Everything only got worse as she grew older. The more power she showed, the harder they pushed. Then again, they would push almost harder if she showed signs of becoming weaker. She learnt it was best to just stay as stagnant as she could. Too bad it seemed they grew restless with her lack of progress.

The old speaker above her head buzzed to life with the same screeching noise she had grown accustomed to. As a toddler, it would always frighten her. She would even have nightmares about bugs and spiders crawling through it, down down down into the room, crawling all over her body until she was covered whole. Now the only effect it had on her was the uncomfortable dread she would feel about what the voice behind the speaker would command her to do. She had been locked in what she called the steel room all day, no one else around her. They figured she worked better without the pressure of being watched, as if she didn't know that behind the mirror across from her, there were god knows how many people doing just that. Watching. Waiting for anything to happen.

"Oleander, we're growing impatient," Doctor Claro commented with that funny sounding voice of his. She once asked when she was younger why he sounded that way, and he told her it was just an accent since he came from a different country. She had no idea what an accent was, but she didn't care enough to question him more. Oleander stared at the mirror, trying to look past her own reflection to Claro. It was hard to ignore the weird contraption that sat on her red-head. It was uncomfortable and itchy. She hated it.

She knew what they wanted her to do. In front of her sat a pot, with a seed imbedded in the soil. They wanted her to grow the plant from scratch. She had done it before when the seed had already panted it's roots, but she'd never been able to simple create life from an unwatered seed. As much as she had sat there and tried (barley), and as much as a migraine was tearing through her head, she had only managed to burst the seed open. They had given her more, but the same kept on happening. "It won't work," she harshly whispered, turning her head away from the mirror. There was a long pause before the speaker crackled to life once more. "We'll come back to that, then." To her surprise, the door clicked open as Dr. Claro stepped into the steel room. He barley ever sat in here when she did these experiments. Turning her head to look at him, his eyes locked with her and he slid into the chair opposite of her, placing a picture face down on the table. Nodding his head to it, Oleander took it as a sign to look. Picking it up, she studied a picture of a man who looked slightly younger than doctor Claro. He had brown hair, and a smile plastered on his face. She couldn't tell the colour of his eyes. The photo looked a little aged. Glancing up at the Doctor, she waited for him to explain what it meant.

"We need you to find him with your astral projection. You can do it with just a picture." Oleander glanced down at the photo for a second, asking quietly, "what's his name?" knowing that it would further connect her to him. Finding someone with just a picture was extremely hard. Any details he could give her would help pinpoint his exact location. "You don't need to know. Just find him." As much as Oleander wanted to argue, she knew it wasn't a good idea. Giving him one last hard look, Oleander reluctantly shut her eyes, picturing the man in the picture while rubbing the glossy photograph with her two thumbs as she held it. Soon enough, her power started to work. She didn't like this power. The earth manipulation stuff she didn't mind, but she hated this. It's like her mind had stepped out of her body. Everything was a bit hazy, unclear, it took a lot of focus for things to become sharper if she wasn't up close. She could see her body, slumped over the photograph. Claro was watching her. Just watching. Taking in a deep breath, she focused her mind on the man again and away from where she currently was. Her mind was greeted by a lot of resistance, more so than usual.

It was like a barrier had stepped in her way. Usually she would flow free. Even if it was hard for her to pinpoint a person's exact location, her body would always take her to the general facinity pretty simply. Focusing harder, trying to push the thought out of her head, she tried to break down the boundary. She imagined her earth manipulation power ripping down vines, and dirt, and brick. Soon enough, Oleander felt her rip through the barrier with great pain, and as she opened her eyes, all she saw was darkness. "Hello?" She called out, turning her head to look around herself, clearly in panic. Clutching her white gowns collar, she whirled around again as she heard a screeching noise come from the distance. Trying to steady her breathing, she hesitantly stepped forward in the dark, one foot at a time, the floor cold through her feet.

The darkness became lighter as could make out a light on the wall, red, and pulsing. Wait- isn't this the lab? Why would Claro ask her to find someone in the lab? Making her way down the hall, the only lights she saw were the red ones. She followed them, like a trail. Eventually, they led her to a closed door. Holding onto the door handle, she clicked it open before stepping in, surprised to see she was in the room her real body was in. Except, it wasn't there. Neither was Claro. Instead, a tall dark figure was turned in the corner, it's back to her. Oleander in her panicked state tried to shuffle back, but tripped over a small dip in the doorway, crashing to the ground. That caught it's attention. With a screech louder than she'd ever heard before, it's head turned around to reveal a petal filled face, drooling, teeth everywhere. Oleander let out a loud scream of her own, closing her eyes and trying so hard to get back to her body. It was easier than the first time. There wasn't a barrier to break down.

As Oleander slammed with immense force back into her body, her eyes shot open as her blood curdling screams continued. Shooting up from her chair while ripping the wried contraption from her head, she threw it to the floor, running to the door to try an escape. She couldn't hear the lab alarms blaring over her own screams. Claro's arms quickly encircled her from behind, stopping her from her thrashing. "Get her the hell out of here!" he bit out, as the door was swung open and two security guards grabbed both her arms to restrain her. Oleander screams soon turned to sobs as she saw the same, flashing red lights signalling alarm in the lab. She had never felt such a sense of evil and wrong from a creature in her life. What was it?

People where running down the halls, weapons in their hands, barley paying any mind to her. Something was happening. Something bad. She only heard passing comments of "what the hell happened" and "something ripped through our wall." None of it made sense. But Oleander knew it wasn't safe here. It had never been safe in the lab, but especially not now.

Hitting the back of the security officers back, she yelled out, "put me down!" and "let me go!" but they ignored her as they inevitably went to return her to her cage room. She wouldn't be sitting trapped. She refused to. Reaching down her hand to the sling on the security guards waist, she tried her hardest not to think of what she was planning to do. Grabbing the gun at his side (which she had unfortunately seen used too many times to count), she clicked the safety off and shot straight at the second security guards head, nearly missing. He dropped like a log, and the security guard currently carrying her threw her off his shoulder in an attempt to get the gun from her hand. It worked, as it skidded away from her. Trying to drag herself across the floor and through the pool of blood that was currently collecting around the dead guards head, the security guard grabbed her ankles, dragging her back towards him. Oleander closed her eyes and screamed out, reaching her power out for anything. Bricks started flying out of the wall, the earth made materials from it coming to her like a magnet. Before they could hit her, she directed its trail towards to the guard as they hit him one after one, crunch after crunch. Oleander scrambled to her feet, before running straight through the hole she had made in the wall. Thankfully it lead outside, a happy upside to this whole mess.

Oleander kept running, thankful for the distraction of whatever was happening in the lab. She wasn't going to be found or followed for awhile. She kept on running through the forest for god knows how long, until the exhaustion of her powers and the migraine ripping through her head overtook her, and unconsciousness welcomed her.

Henry really needed to stop taking double shifts, especially late night ones. Not like he could really say no. His family needed all the extra cash he could get, and Jane's son was sick anyways so she really couldn't come in. God knows that woman would cover him if he really needed it. He didn't even get home from the diner until one in the morning, and by that time he was so exhausted from the late night drunks crashing in to get a burger last minute that he didn't even bother to check in Chris's room to see if he'd gotten home okay.

He regrets that now.

Getting up a little on the late side for a school day, Henry barley pulled a scratchy black wool sweater over his head before his mother poked his head into the room, without knocking might he add. "Honey, where's Chris?" she questioned, a small crease appearing on her forehead in concern. Rubbing the sleep out of his eyes, he cocked his head slightly asking, "What do you mean? He's not here?" By the second, Henry was really starting to wake up. "No. I just went to wake him up and his bed doesn't look like it's been touched. He came home last night, right?" She pushed on. Henry brushed past her to go into the poorly carpeted hallway, pushing open Chris door. His Mom was right. Everything was the same as it was yesterday. Not super unusual, but enough that a small panicked feeling was starting to form in Henry's stomach. "I never saw him last night, I worked a double. Have you called the James's? He was there last night." His mother just shook her head, bringing her hand up to bite her nails nervously. Henry let out a long, shaky breath before running over to the bright yellow phone dangling by it's cord as it sat on the floor. Odd, maybe it fell in the night. Dialling the number to his friends house, Henry leaned up against the wall, returning his mother's worried look. Someone answered on the fifth ring with a cough. "Uh, hi, whose this?" A gruff voice answered on the other line, sounding a little worse for wear. "Mr. James? It's Henry Byrd. Hey, did Christopher spend the night last night?" There was a short pause until he replied, "I only see one kid sitting in my dining room. Give me a second." Henry had to pull the phone slightly away from his ear as he heard Mr. James yell "Wesley, did Christopher spend the night last night?" He heard a softer voice yell back, "No, why?" before Mr. James voice filled the phone line once more. "Doesn't look like it. Everything okay down there?" Henry's heart nearly dropped through his chest. Shit. Shit, shit, shit!. "Yeah, uh, he must be around here somewhere. Sorry to bother you." Henry croaked out, before hanging the phone up. Henry's mother dropped her hand for a second in question. Henry simply shook his head. Not there.

Sarah Byrd took in a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves. "Okay. Okay, maybe he left. I'll call the school to see if he went there early. Why don't you go to school Honey? I'm sure he'll show up," she nervously smiled. She was worried, yes, but nothing bad ever happened in Hawkins. Right?

Henry shook his head harder, his dark curls bouncing around his head almost comically through his nerves. "I can take a day off of school, mom," he scoffed, crossing his arms over his chest. "It's my fault he's gone. I wasn't there last night. Call the school and I'm going to look around the house to see if I can find anything." His mom looked ready to argue, but she knew that no matter what he said, he was going to do it anyways. "Fine. Alright," she conceded, before turning towards to phone and dialling a number. Henry nodded in a resolute manner, before slipping on some shoes and running outside. Quickly checking the area where Chris usually parks his bike, he noticed it wasn't there. He could have taken it to school, yes, but Henry just had a bad feeling. He had a bad feeling about all of this. He was sure something had happened. He could feel it in his bones, and he was terrified. Running a hand through his hair, he circled around the house once, not noticing anything out of the ordinary. Then he remembered something. Henry didn't have to unlock the door yesterday. It was already open. Henry had left after Chris had gone to his friends, and he sure as hell always remembered to lock the door.

Racing back into the house, he got there just in time to see his mother hanging up the phone at the wall. She didn't turn for a minuts, and Henry's feeling of dread hit an all time high. It took only the look on his mother's face as she turned around to guess what he'd been thinking all along; Henry wasn't at school.

"I called his other friends parents to see if he was there... none of them have seen him."

Christopher was missing.

It didn't take them long at all to pile into his broken down car and race down to the Hawkins Police station. The only ever time he had entered the building was to deliver burgers to a couple of guys when he first started working at the diner at 15, and when he took a field trip here in grade school. It was an old building. The cops in it? Even older. Well, expect for the Chief. But even then, Henry wasn't sure Chief Crawford did much at all.

Stepping into the building, they were greeted by a fifty-something lady, smoking a cigarette at reception. "I-I need to speak to Crawford," his mother stumbled her words, her hand visibly shaking. Henry grabbed it and gave it a light squeeze, in hopes it world calm his nerves as well. "Don't we all," the lady mused, before pressing a button on some intercom and saying, "John, you have visitors.". A voice staticked back saying, "Tell 'em I'm busy and send them to someone else." The receptionist looked back at them with a deadpan face and repeated, "He's busy, see someone else." That wasn't good enough. Henry gave the woman a hard look as he let go of his mothers hand. Feeling a sudden burst of bravery, he hopped over the counter, much to the older woman's shock, before he clicked a button on the intercom. "It's Henry Byrd. Chief, my brothers missing, you need to help us because I swear if anything has happened to him-"

"Jesus, I get it. Get in here," a voice cut him off, as a dirty blonde haired man stood in his office doorway. Henry let go of the intercom speaker, the receptionist lady giving him a rather nasty look. Sarah just mumbled a small, "thank you," before moving into the office, Henry close behind her.

As soon as the door closed behind them, John Crawford thumped down behind his desk, crossing his arms over his chest. "Alright, so missing kid? How long has he been gone?" Both the Byrd's sat in front of his desk. Sarah glanced at Henry before saying, "last night. We think. We woke up this morning and he wasn't home; we called his friends houses and the school, no one has seen him." Henry chirped in adding, "his bike isn't home either, and I noticed that our house was unlocked last night when I got in. It's not like him to leave the house unlocked." John nodded, as he scribbled something down on a note pad. Clearing his throat, he set his pen and paper down as he said, "You don't think he just wandered off for a night? As a kid I would spend a couple nights outdoors by myself just to get away. Kids do it all the time." Henry shook his head. "No, he wouldn't. He's not the type of kid to do that. Trust me, he's missing, something's wrong." John didn't seem overly convinced, but honestly at least this gave him something to do today. For a bit. "Give me the name of his friends and I'll go talk to them at the school," he huffed out, pushing himself out of his chair. Sarah rattled of the kids's names. Going over to the coat rack, john slipped on his jacket and put his hat on. Just as he was about to leave, he turned to Sarah and said, "Sarah, go home and I'll give you a call if I find anything out." John then turned his gaze to Henry and grunted out, "and you. Get your ass to school, kid.

Charlie Hoffman ate another spoonful of Dino Peebles flipping through the pages of her latest Nacy Drew novel. Already on her fourth one of the month and still predictable as ever. "Charlie honey! Your fathers taking you to school today, he's waiting in the car for you. I have to take Daniel to the doctor." Gross, Daniel was her 6-month old brother who she loathed, all he ever did was cry. She shoved the novel into her backpack and tossed her empty bowl into the sink. "Bye mom"She called over her shoulder as she picked up her backpack and headed towards the front door. She faintly heard the phone ring and her mother pick up the receiver, "Oh hi, Sarah -". The conversation died out quickly as Charlie opened the door and sprinted across the lawn to the blue Volkswagen, hopping into the passenger door.

"Audrey! You can't be in there forever!" Luke yelled pounding on the bathroom door rather aggressively. God, I hate sharing a bathroom with a girl He thought practically sulking to his parent's room. His mother, Maura, was still in bed flipping through the pages of a Good Home magazine. "Mom, Aud's hugging the bathroom again" His mother chuckled setting her magazine on the bedside table, amused by her son's puppy pout. "Honey, she's a teenage girl, give her time to get ready. You can just use my bathroom" She gestured to the bathroom door already propped open from his father. He awkwardly tapped his foot, mumbling slightly under his breath. His mother raised an eyebrow and leaned up in the bed, "I'm sorry what was that?". Luke let out an frustrated sigh, crossing his arms. "Mom, my Drakkar Noir is in that bathroom". Maura couldn't hold back a snort and Luke's face flushed a deep red. "Honey, I think you and the girls can do without your fancy cologne for a day". Luke just responded with a quiet and angered breath and stomped into his mother's bathroom.

Charlie rocked back and forth on her heels, as she stood outside Hawkins Middle School her eyes scanning the crowd for her friends. Luke was the first to show up, and - well no one else. "Hey do you know where Christopher and Wes are?" A sudden pang of worry made her feel a bit off. "They're probably just late Char, come on we're going to be late for History"

As soon as the two entered the class together they were met with the rather questionable stare of Sherriff Crawford and their teacher. The two stopped in their tracks looks of dread written of both of their faces, Luke was the first one to speak up out of the two of them. "Uh, is everything alright?, Crawford glanced at each of them as if contemplating whether or not to reveal anything. "Charlie Hoffman and Luke Fletcher?" The two locked eyes before nodding cautiously. "I'm going to need you two to come with me".

Wesley busted right out of his science class as soon as his test was handed in. He'd never run in the halls, but he was doing it now, reading glasses and all. Swinging open the office door, his blue eyes immediately fixed on his two friends seated together both looking nervous, facing what must have been the sheriff. So his fears were right. This was about Christopher. Clearly still out of breath (Wes was defiantly not the most athletic kid you'd ever meet), he sat himself next to Charlie giving her a concerned look before saying to the cop, "this is about Chris, right? He hasn't been to school all day and his brother called my dad this morning asking question an-" "Kid, take a breath," the cop cut him off. Wesley nodded his head frantically, taking in a much needed air of breath. Okay. He was fine. "I'm Chief John Crawford, and yes, we just want to know where Christopher is. Any idea?" Wes shook his head no. Charlie's eyes widened slightly her face growing pale, "Wait, Christopher is missing? B- but we just saw him last night" She frantically looked to Wes for help. "The last time I saw him, he was riding his bike home last night. He was the last one to leave before PJ, our uh- baby sitter." Crawford nodded his head, before leaning forward a bit. "So no idea where he could have gone to? Any favourite spots of his?" Wes glanced over at his friends briefly, before looking back. "No, I have no clue. It's not like him to run away, something must have happened to him." Luke nodded along with Wes, "yeah, out of all of us, Chris is the least likely to just up and run". Crawford let out a sigh and pinched the bridge of his nose, "So you have no inclination to where he is?" The three shook their head 'no' in unison. Crawford scribbled on a piece of his notebook and ripped it out handing it to Wes, "Listen, if he contacts you or you remember anything about what could've happened just call the station alright?" The three nodded and shifted in their seats uncomfortably. There was a slight pause in the room before Crawford broke the silence, "Well, what're you doing here sitting like logs. Go back to class". Charlie was the first to stand, grabbing Wes's wrist and pulling him up with her. "Yes sir, have... a nice day" Her sentence was rushed and all too suspicious. Luke got the point and the three of them rushed out of the office. "Guys this is a huge, this is bad. What do we do?"

This called for an immediate meeting for the AV Club.

The three friends knew immediately where to go. Racing down the hall, only slowing their pace as they passed opened door classrooms, they hustled into the cramped AV room that was almost like a second home to them all. Wesley quickly shut the door behind him, and whipped around. He couldn't believe this was happening. They were just kids! Bad stuff like this couldn't be happening to them. "I don't think I can just wait around and do nothing," Wesley stated to them, as if continuing the conversation from where Luke had left off with his "Guys this is a huge, this is bad. What do we do?" comment. Wesley trusted the police. Well, he knew he should. This was there job right? They would find out where he was. Possibly. Hopefully. But one thing was for sure, Wes wasn't going to just sit around and wait to hear the fate of his friend. He was all about sticking to the rules, but this was different.

"But we don't even have a clue where he could've gone! It's Christopher, not Luke. He'd never just disappear like this... not without telling one of us" Charlie piped up, slumping into her chair, a rather worried look on her face. Wes felt a sharp pang of sympathy for the girl. They were all feeling this. Christopher was the most fragile of the group and the thought of him all alone somewhere terrified her. "Well, we know where he was going right? I mean Wes, if you saw him leave on his bike that means we for sure know he was heading home. Can't we just retrace his steps?" Luke had reclined back in the swivel chair, his feet propped up on the desk. To the untrained eye he looked like the most collected out of the three but, on the inside his heart was beating a mile a minute. Wes turned his attention to Luke and considered what he said. For once, he seemed to make a reasonable comment. "As long as he took the same route he usual does," Wes conceded, choosing to sit on the floor, his back to the door. "Do you think we should talk to Henry or something? We don't even know if he went missing on his way home or at his house." Charlie nodded along with Wes, "you're probably right. Luke, isn't your sister friends with Henry? Do you think you could get her to ask?" Luke rolled his eyes and threw his hands up in exasperation. "I don't know anything about my sister other than she's the weirdest person in this town. I doubt she's even friends with him. Can't we just do it ourselves? I don't see why we have to ask the adults. You know the second I try to tell my mother I want to help she'll lock me in a bubble and take away your visitation rights". Charlie shot Luke a look and looked to Wes for help, "Luke, if something bad did actually happen to Christopher, who's to say we're not next? Or we have anymore chance than he does?" Luke swiveled his chair to face her raising an eyebrow, "We're talking about the same Christopher right? Like scared of a mouse Christopher?" Charlie shoved her foot into the base of his chair and he nearly face-planted into the tile. "Luke, he's missing now is not the time to be an asshat".

Wes let out a very audible groan as he let his face fall into the palms of his hands. Where he didn't feel particularly bad Charlie had knocked Luke from his chair (he was kind of glad, actually), it was all counterproductive. "Luke, seriously. All teenagers are weird, okay? And your sister is friends with Henry. I can't believe I know that and you don't." "Okay well you try having an older sister Wes, and then you get back to me on that" Luke said crossing his arms across his chest - while taking a few cautious scoots away from Charlie. Standing up from the ground, he spoke clearer as he said, "Let's take a vote. I say we take our bikes down the trail Chris takes to see if we can see anything. If nothing's there, we'll just go to the Bryd's to see what’s up." Pointing an accusatory finger at Luke, he continued, "and you. You can sneak out past your parents, I'm sure it's not the first time you have. Grill Audrey for any information she might have." Charlie raised a hand halfway in the air looking at both the boys, "I have to agree with Wes on this one, I think it's the smartest choice". Wes couldn't help the small satisfaction he felt over hearing her agree with him. He gave her a small smile.

All eyes were on Luke as the other two waited for his response. "What? I've already been outvoted, does it look like I have a choice?" Charlie giggled to that comment, it was a small moment of relief from the actual scariness of the situation. "Well I guess it's settled, you guys can just tell your parents that you're hanging out at my house and I'll tell my mom I'm at Tracy's. That'll give us time to go - look - for him". She had to catch herself from saying find, nothing was guaranteed at this moment. Wes nodded. "Sounds like a plan. Let's meet at the end of my road at 5 tonight. I'll bring the flashlights."

Audrey first started hearing the murmurs as she was leaving her chemistry class. She wasn't one to listen to other people's chatter, but it was hard to ignore the passing words of "where do you think he went?" and "I can't believe someones missing." It was odd, to say the least, but she didn't think much of it. She figured maybe one of the popular kids had bailed out on class or something. Not really big news, but big enough for a place like Hawkins.

As she made her way to her locker to switch out her books for the final class of the day, Math, she noticed from the corner of her eye her friend Mary approaching her with a slightly hesitant look to her face. Weird. "Have you seen the posters?" She questioned slowly. Audrey cocked her head to the side, questioning, "What posters, the ones for the dance? I keep telling you there's no way I'm going." Mary shook her head. "Uhm, no. Look," she murmured, lifting her hand to point at the poster board a few steps away. Turning to look, she couldn't quite make it out from this distance, so she pulled out her textbook and shut her locker before weaving through passerbys in the hallway to see.

On a small piece of paper was a picture or a kid she recognized all too well; Christopher Byrd. And above it, the words "missing boy" was scrawled, along a description and the Bryd's home phone number. This can't be real. Chris was fine just last night. Turning to look at Mary, she hurriedly asked, "have you seen Henry anywhere?" Mary nodded. "Yeah, he only just started putting these up before the bell rang. I think he's still going around." Audrey gave her a brief nod before running off in the opposite direction of her math class. She wasn't one to skip, but Henry was her friend and she wanted to ask what was going on.

After wandering the walls aimlessly for about four minutes, she finally saw the familiar dark curly hair that she'd been looking for. Running up to him just as he was stapling another poster up, she came to a stop just before him and grabbed his arm, asking, "Is it true? What happened?" Henry took in a small inhalation of breath before looking at Audrey. She was quick to note how gaunt and stressed his face was. "Yeah. Yeah, he's missing," he spoke quietly, and Audrey was quick to pull him into a hug. He didn't react at first, just letting his arms hang loosely at his side, but he eventually returned it. Letting go, Audrey took his arm and led him to a bench underneath the staircase, sitting him down. He was almost like a puppet on auto-pilot. "He was at Wesley's still when I went to pick Luke up," she stated. She didn't want to ask him outright what had happened, what he had yet to find out if he didn't want to share. This was so she could give him a bit of information and let him tell her as much as he wanted. Henry nodded, as he racked his hand through his hair and leaned back. "The last we know is that he rode his bike off that night. When I woke up today we noticed he wasn't home, his bikes not there." The breath he let out after that sentence was one of frustration. "Have you talked to Peter to see what he knows? He baby sat last night," she questioned. Henry sharply grounded out, "No. The cops can talk to him if they want to." Audrey gave a small shocked look at his clear aversion to his idea. She didn't really want to read into that too much right now, especially as he quickly changed the subject. "I didn't even check on him last night Audrey, we have no idea if he even got home last night. I should have checked," he bit out.

Audrey nodded along as he told her, leaning back against the wall with him as he did. She felt a lump starting to form in her throat. She understood the guilt he felt, hell, he should be pissed off at her of all people. She thought about driving Chris home last night but didn't. If she had, he probably wouldn't be missing. "It's not you're fault for not checking on him Henry. No one could have guessed something like this would happen," she murmured, turning her head to look at him. "I should have drove him home last night. I'm so sorry," she breathed out, and Henry just shook his head. It wasn't her fault for not driving him home. Henry knew he should have been there. Standing back up, he cleared his throat slightly as he said, "you should get to class. I still have to put these posters up downtown and go around some of the neighbourhoods." Audrey stood up after him, and took half the missing posters from his pile. Trying to give him a reassuring smile she said, "I can miss math. I'll go downtown and put these up, okay? We'll be able to cover more ground faster." Henry stood there for a couple of seconds just looking at her, before giving a relenting nod. She gave him one last one armed hug, before running off the the parking lot to get in her car, praying her mother would forgive her for skipping out.

Around an hour and a half later, Audrey was making her way up her home's drive way. She managed to get a lot of posters up, and avoided conversation with gossipy old ladies who were more than a little inquisitive about Chris's disappearance. Opening her front door, Audrey was not prepared for her mother to be right there, frustration sketched upon her face. "Audrey Virginia Fletcher, where have you been!" she yelled out, before Audrey even had the chance to step inside the house. "I was just-" she was cut off before she could even provide an explanation. "Do you know I got a call from your school? I can't believe my own child would skip class. You are a half an hour late! You do know that Christopher Byrd went missing, yes? I've been out of my mind!" Audrey raised her hands in defence as she butted in with, "I know, I know, I'm sorry! I was helping Henry put up missing posters downtown." Audrey's mother still stood there, hands on her hips as she contemplated the girls answer. "That is still not a good enough reason to skip class young lady. From now on, I want you home right after school until the police figure out what happened. I don't want you or your brother going missing on me, got it?" Audrey didn't get it. This was house arrest. However, she's learned over the years to not argue and to just find way around it. "Alright, mom," she sighed, slipping past her to go up the stairs. Just as she reached the top landing to her bedroom door, her mother hollered out, "and I'll be telling your father what you did when he get's home from work!"
