Ulysses

Ulysses

0 INK

Humanity's only hope lies in three ships drifting aimlessly through space: One battlecruiser, and two colony ships. Will they ever return to Earth, Or find a new home?

1,249 readers have visited Ulysses since Serly created it.

Introduction

Ulysses.

Space. Infinitely large, Vastly empty, with small pockets of mass clinging to each other, oasis in an endless, black desert. There is no sound in space. There is no air for the sound waves to vibrate through, creating what we perceive as sound. Focus in on a galaxy, near the ‘middle’ of what we know as the Universe. A spiral-armed galaxy, known on the planet we call ‘Earth’ as the Milky Way. On one arm, there could be as many as five million stars. Out of all those, we focus on a group of five, each about one, to one half, of a light year apart. Closing in further, on one that is on the edge and the furthest away from the other five, we see that it has fifteen planets orbiting in. Two gas giants orbiting each other in a strange, binary system, mark the main ‘unique’ feature of this particular system. Focusing in on them, we see that between the two lies a small ‘rip’ in space. It is barely noticeable, blending in perfectly in the shadow of the two giants. It ripples silently, rays of light suddenly bursting into life, spraying the two planets at either side with an strange glow for a moment, before disappearing into the nothingness from which it came. In its place, a spacecraft is. There are no running lights. No signs of life.
Slowly, the ship, propelled by the laws of gravity, drifts into the light. Painted on its surface are strange symbols that circle the turrets that bristle from its iron hide. Seven large, ninety-inch turrets on each side, port and starboard, parallel to each other. Between them, seventy smaller, five-inch anti-fighter turrets bristle, in a honeycomb fashion. On the nose of the ship, a large, spiral-mounted cannon sticks out a good hundred feet from where the armor ends, fifty feet in diameter, capable of firing a nine-hundred ton ball of tungsten at a fraction of the speed of light, doing unspeakable damage to a target. On ‘top’ and ‘bottom’ of the ship, large missile bays honeycomb their way around two turreted laser banks. Large engines lie silent at the back of the ship, capable of pushing it in-system at one-fifth light speed. Two hangar bay doors lie above the engines, each capable of launching thirty fighter-bombers. But despite the impressive arrays of military prowess and technology, the ship seems worse for the wear. Its armor is pocketed with small impact craters, tears, and burn marks. Atmosphere ventilates from a hole near the rear, slowly causing the ship to turn. On-board, failsafe computers kick in, and the doors are shut to the vacuumed areas. The engine sputters, and silently roars into life, great blue-green flames leaping from nowhere to slowly start to move the engine forward, as maneuvering jets kick in on either side and straighten the ship’s path.
On-board, a screen suddenly lights up a room…

[-Project Ulysses Failure-]
Date: 2075 FTL, Feb. 1

To: Admiral Smith
From: Captain Winegar

Admiral; The mission is a failure. We've lost the Ulysses, Achilles, and Michigan. Pompay was destroyed by unknown hostiles at star #120929 Delta, and the Hercules has sustained massive damage. Last we heard from Ulysses, Captain Marly and the bridge crew were dead. They and Michigan/Achilles jumped randomly in the same vector to space. We barely survived ourselves. We're on our way home, sir. The Ulysses is lost to space. If any other ship picks this up, Pass it to Admiral Smith in the Earth Defensive Fleet 109.

Mission Statement:

Project Ulysses is Mankinds last hope to stay alive. With this unknown alien force wiping humanity out on all worlds, We have only a limited amount of time left. Project Ulysses will put two brand-new, Ulysses class Battlecruisers, and Four Cryo-ships. We will select the civilians to be sent at random. Families will not be grouped together. When you get these people, Tranq them and bring them to the designated spot. There will be a team there to cryogenically freeze them for the trip. Upon waking up in five years time, There will be a copy of all related files waiting for them all on their HandComps. With luck, We wont get exterminated by these bastards. If we manage to resist, We'll send out a task force to bring them back. If we dont.. Well. The Captains will jump around the universe. If they make it to the other side of the Galaxy, they'll be safe, and will find a new place to settle. Random FTL jumps will lead them around the galaxy in about two years, when the crew will waken from sleep.. Or they'll waken when there is a emergency. Either way, We'll be prepared for each scenario. Military forces have also been hand-picked, and similarly treated. They wont know what the hell is going on until its safe, but.. Well. We know how dangerous it is. The Ulysses and the Achilles are brand new. Them, along with the new Warsaw class fighters, should prove more then enough to handle anything we dont know about out there.

Captains, Your the only ones who know anything about this mission. Keep them safe, Gentlemen.

(( This RP is a 'End of Humanity' survival idea. It will take place two years after the accident. Your character would know nothing about why they are on the ships. These files represent all the information your character would learn upon waking. This is UNIVERSAL. No one knows ANYTHING about whats going on, besides the Captains, Who are all dead. But I wont give anything away! Above is the character sheet you should use. WARNING! I dont reccomend this RP for people who are weak of heart. I do want things to be VIOLENT and GRAPHIC. This is not a goody-goody, "Save the World' mission. This is a " What the hell is going on, Where the fuck am I, Can I ever go home?" mission. And no, they wont ever go home. I will not accept any characters bellow the age of 17. We have room for two more Lieutenants besides my own. The names set for those Lieutenants. Atleast, the last names. Use good grammar, Be active, And as for technology: Ship battles would consist of hand-to-hand combat, Not alot of shooting. Swords are allowed, as you can see from my own post. Rifles and heavier weapons would be in the cargo bays. Pistols are allowed. Mostly civilians, if you please! Anybody fit and with some sort of necessary job is welcome. Thats all. Post'em if you got'em! ))

Ed snapped a quick salute in return, and then pointed at the stations. "This is the secondary bridge, and it doesnt have a plug-chair. Therefore, everything will have to be done manually. Find out what your good at, and pick a station."

The computer beeped in. "There are six stations. Two for the weapon-systems, divided into two groups: Anti-fighter, and anti-ship. There is one station for engineering, with control over thrusters, engines, and repair nano-bots. There are two auxilary stations, aswell, divided into two groups: Radar, and fighter control. The Captain's counsel is reserved for Captain Kurek."

Ed sat down at the captain's counsel, and started to type away at the holo-screen. "I want all the fighters launched. Form a defensive parameter around the two colony ships. Someone get on that counsel and maneuver us inbetween them and the enemy! If we're all thats' left.."

He let it hand. Outside the ship, the alien vessel was closing, fast. It was large, dark, forboding. All along its sleek hull were bright, red lights, as their energy weapons charged up. Plasma would be flying through space towards them at any minute.

"Comptuer! Are the captains of the colony ships awake?"

"Negative."

"Damnit.. Right, plot them a course towards that gas giant. The gravity well should mess up their firing solutions. I want us using only lasers and railguns, people! Lets -move- it!"

Jay nodded as the captain talked. At least he was much more agreeable than the other damn military man. But there was one thing that was a problem. Which of the two main weapon systems should he take? Anti-fighter, or anti-ship? Well, there would be many more fighters than capital ships, so they could likely live without the anti-ships. So...

Jay sat down in front of the anti-ship station, then turned back to the captain for a second. "Sir," he asked, "what kind of weapon systems do we have? Do we only have the bare minimum railguns, or do we have any laser systems or missiles?"

As the only other man on the bridge with even remotely any military experience, Hunter quickly realized his best place was at Fighter Control. Let the others point and click, that didn't take any skill; not much, at least. The computer assisted you enough to make it easy for even the stupidest soldier to handle the weapon stations. The manual control and lack of a plug-chair may have made it a bit more difficult though, he reasoned as he ran and threw himself into the chair in front of the Fighter Control station, taking a moment to familiarize himself with the controls.

Without bothering to ask permission, knowing it was a waste of time, the Airman ordered the fighters to be launched, and followed that up immediately with an order to head for the colony ships and form a protective screen. It would take mere moments to launch the fighters, but those were moments Toby knew he couldn't afford to waste. As they were launched, he practically sprang out of the fighter control station, moving to the radar station for a brief moment to survey the situation. After taking in the proximity of the enemy ship and her fighters, and the positions of each, Tobias Hunter returned to his original control console, lips set in a grim line and brows furrowed. This would not be easy.

"Fighters launched, defensive screen forming up as per orders sir. I'll order them to intercept anything sent the way of those colony ships." As Toby spoke, his fingers danced, lightning-fast, through the motions of just such an order.

While Jay and Hunter took over their chosen positions, Angel found herself at the only station she was qualified for: Engineer.
This ship was a little more advanced than any training simulators.... okay, it was a lot more advanced. But it was all the same basic principles, right?
Only one way to find out.
Half-hoping that the engines weren't set on reverse for some bizarre reason, the mechanic punch in a few directional commands. The ship followed them immediately, moving gracefully in between the enemy scouts and the colony ships.
"We're in position to defend the colony ships, Captain. All systems are ready for battle."
Maybe now would be a good time to start praying to God...

Ed's viewscreen light up, showing the dark outline that was the enemy ship. "Enemy almost in range, people. We need to take it out. Got it? We cant let this bastard go back and report our location. They'll notice it's missing after a while, but we need what time we have to unload and get some defenses up."

As he talked, he typed away, trying to get more information on the enemy. "Soldier, we have lasers, missiles, and railguns. Use the lasers for point-blank defense. Railguns should be powered up and loaded with tungsten rounds, ready to fire on my command, and launch a wave of missiles when you get a lock."

Flipping from console-control to direct spoken orders with the Captain of the fighters out there, Toby did a quick radio confirmation. It sounded silly, pre-fight, but it never hurt to be certain your connection was good. If there were issues and you couldn't hear the other person, especially in a battle, shit would start falling apart.

"Alpha-One, Hotel-Sierra. Confirm connection."

A buzz of static, and Toby was momentarily worried before a brief response came back.

"Alpha-One, connection confirmed. Good to hear we have someone up there watching us."

"Confirmed, Alpha-One. You and your boys will be in charge of making sure nothing gets through to those colony ships. Assist the other Wings as you can, but do your job first; those ladies and gentlemen aboard the C-ships are extremely important to us, and without them, this mission is going to be pointless."

"Yes sir, Alpha-One confirms. Out." Alpha-One, or Lieutenant Jakobs, didn't need any more orders than that. Cutting the connection quickly, he pulled up his own channel, selecting his small (for the moment,) wing. There weren't as many out of Cryo as he'd like, but he'd deal with what he had.

As would Toby, back aboard Hotel-Sierra, or homeship, the designation for the ship from which the fighters had launched. He didn't have anywhere near as many men out there as he'd like, but with the few he did have, he'd put up an effective defense. He quickly assigned the rest of the Wings their orders, giving Bravo the task of defending Hotel-Sierra, and picking Charlie, Delta, and Echo to launch the attack against the enemy. Foxtrot he held back, as a floater Wing to assist any of the others as need be. With fighters, the best defense involved throwing them under the enemy's guard, slipping them in where the vicious ship-killer missiles couldn't reach, and they'd have to resort to laser. He hoped the enemy wasn't smart enough to realize that.

Just as this last thought raced before his head, before it finished, even, he spun in his chair and called over, "Captain Kurek! Fighters designated to posts, Alpha to defend the Colony ship and Bravo to defend us. Charlie, Delta, and Echo will assault the enemy position."

Josh sat up in the cryo tube his head pounding. There were noises all around him, he took a moment to survey his surrounding’s. He sat in what looked like a standard cryo room, like you could find on any ship in the fleet. Yet it was different more streamlined, more advanced, or maybe it was the flashing red emergency lights and loud computer voice telling him and the others in the room to report to their duty station’s. There were at least thirty other men in the room all moving from there cryo tube’s to the equipment locker’s on the other side of the room. “Get your ass out of the tube private!” yelled a older man with slightly graying hair. He was in uniform and the rank on his collar said he was a sergeant. Josh hopped out of the tube throwing a salute and yelled “Yes sir sergeant.”

Josh looked down at himself he wore white boxer’s and a white t-shirt. “I said move your ass private,” yelled the sergeant. “Yes sir” said Josh, damn I can hear him over the sirens and everything else. Josh made his way over to a locker and opened it. Inside was a 13mm rail-pistol, 34-inch blade, sheath, gun holster, and army uniform with a private insignia, as well as a HandComp. He quickly dressed and armed himself. “Where are we suppose to go” he asked another soldier next to him? “Check your Comp” said the soldier. Activating his comp and inputting his registration number pulled up his current assignment. It read that he was assigned to security detail along with five others to the secondary bridge.

Near the door to the hallway was the same sergeant who had yelled at him earlier. “Everyone on guard detail on the secondary bridge with me!” “Shit” Josh muttered under his breath. He and four other privates went to the sergeant. “Let’s get moving people.” Josh and the others made there way into the hallway, and following the sergeant who was looking at his Comp for directions went towered the secondary bridge. As they neared the door the sergeant said “when we get in there you all form a line behind me while I report to the commanding officer you stay that way until we receive our orders if no orders are forthcoming take up guard positions understood.” “Yes sir” we all said in unison.

We moved through the door and formed a line behind the sergeant, Josh studied the people in the room. There was a man in the caption’s chair with a lieutenant seconded grade fleet rank which made him the highest officer in the room, there was a blond man at the anti-ship station who was dressed like a civ, a man in a fleet airman uniform manned the fighter control station, and a girl was at the engineering station. The sergeant snapped a smart salute to the lieutenant in the caption’s chair with us following him a second later. “Sir bridge security detail reporting for duty sir” said the sergeant “orders sir!”

Sparing his attention from the Fighter Console for half a second, Toby's eyes flicked back to the grunts that filed into the room. Why the EDF bothered keeping an Army group on board their ships, he'd never understand. Integrating everything would've made life far easier and infinitely more efficient. However, it was not to be. And so, as a result, this gruff Sergeant, (who outranked him even though for the moment Toby's position was more important,) stood on the deck of the secondary bridge, his little ducklings all in a row behind him. Snorting slightly, the airman looked back at his console, watching as the Wings each made their way to their respective destinations and groupings. Foxtrot flew circuits behind the rest, keeping an eye on the overall field.

Never really a flyboy, Toby nevertheless realized that simply designating them with traditional battlegroup names was not going to work. He'd have to leave naming up to the Wing captains, but not right now. Right now, there was a battle to win.

Angel looked over her shoulder at the soldiers filing into the room. "What've you guys been doing, taking a nap?"
... Actually, if they'd just gotten out of their cryopods, they technically had.
Whatever.
The mechanic looked back at the screen, just in time for the shirt to jolt suddenly as it took a hit. "We've taken damage! Sending out nanobots." Several complex program commands later, a cloud of microscopic repair robots escaped from a tiny opening on the ship, immidiately flocking to the damaged hull of the ship.
"It'll take a few minutes for the repairs to finish. Hunter, make sure they don't hit the same place twice or we're gonna be loosing oxygen, fast."

Jay had waited for a few moments, because the enemy had been a little too far to fire efficiently. But he had waited too long. Now they were too close. After a few furious taps, the defense systems were in full swing. They were close enough that the lasers inflicted damage. Jay might not be a huge fan of some particular military men, but he had to hand it to them all; they were good. He had seen poor pilots and men before, and that had never turned out well. Now that the the defenses were up, the enemy could be steered right into them. But that wasn't all they had.

The missiles and railguns were proving useful in a different way. They were picking of some of the outliers in the battle and taking pot-shots at the enemies' capital, damaging them if they could. This strategy hopefully would prevent the opposition to regroup and attack in formation, because that could have been damaging to both the fighters and the mothership itself. He was sure that the damn airman sitting in the chair nearby knew exactly what he was doing, so he said nothing. He might dislike the man, but he was no slouch when it came to battle.

Acknowledging Angel with a curt nod, Tobias opened a channel to Foxtrot's captain. Without waiting for the traditional acknowledgement, Toby immediately gave the man his orders in a brisk no bullshit voice. "Take your Wing to assist Bravo, we've succeeded in diverting attention away from the C-ships and they're hitting Hotel-Sierra hard." Severing the link after the captain acknowledged, the airman took a moment to breathe. His attention to the battle never wavered, but he was out of his element here; he was far more used to leading men then spacecraft, and it wasn't easy to adapt. He didn't want to be responsible for needless casualties. Already Bravo had been hit fairly hard, and the Wings he had ordered to attack were doing so, but at no small cost. Charlie, Delta, and Echo had all lost more than a few good pilots already.

He blinked, sharpened his focus, and was back in the moment and ready. He couldn't afford to have his thoughts start drifting away on him, as normal as that was right after cryo. Toby turned his head for a second, speaking directly at Jay. "Try and support the Wings attacking, they're getting hammered. If they have to pull back before the colony ships can successfully evacuate, we'll be in shit."

Before the lieutenant could responded to the sergeant question , and issue any orders the ship gave a violent shudder. Josh was a ground soldier not a fleet man, but he could tell from the look’s on the others face’s that thing’s were getting heavy. As the lieutenant was distracted with the new event’s unfolding outside the ship, Josh and the other’s followed the sergeants previous order’s and moved to take up guard position’s.

With two private’s on the left hand side of the bridge, and two on the right as well. That left Josh and the sergeant to stand guard at the door. It gave him a good view of the bridge and control station’s. So he could more or less tell what was happening, and how the battle was going. So far there ship had only taken minor damage, and it looked like the fighter’s were doing a good job at keeping the enemy at bay in exchange for horrific casualty’s. Yet thing’s were about to get worse. It seemed the enemy capital ship was trying to out maneuver there ship to get at the two colony ship’s behind them. “Shit that’s not good” said Josh under his breath so the only person to hear him was the sergeant who ignored him anyway.

"Damage report!"

Ed glanced at the woman in the engineering station. And at the same time, he was using his HUD to scan for where the hit came from. "Right, folks. Scratch previous information, looks like we have a full fleet on our hands. Negative on staying here, We're going to make a hard jump!"

Sure enough, hidden behind the planet they were originally -going- to, an entire fleet of the Enemy had appeared. Their fighters swarmed to them, weapons flashing as they fired. Another missile impacted the ship, shaking it violently. Apparently, they had some sort of long-range frigates firing at them. He slammed his fist onto his chair's armrest. "Damnit, this is -not- good! Prepare to fire the main guns, on my mark!"

He typed away, aiming the cannons individually. It took a matter of seconds, crucial seconds, seconds that wouldnt have been wasted had he been plugged in. Damn low-tech secondary bridge! Slowly, with every second, the enemy ships grew larger. A trick of the eye, which really meant they were getting -closer-. The enemies ships, generally dark and hidden, were outlined by the bright red planet behind them. Details werent visible, but the outline was enough to almost make Ed piss his pants. Almost.

They were insane- The shapes didnt make sense at all! It hurt his eyes just to glance in that direction. No one ship was the same; And he knew, from early reports, that these ships were actually -organic-.. Grown to be juggernauts. "Computer, Prepare to initiate a hard jump, as soon as we fire the main guns. Strap yourselves in! We arent supposed to be awake for these jumps, but we -can- survive them!"

Slowly, the outlines grew bigger. The ship shuddered again. Then.. "FIRE!"

Angel hadn't signed up for this. She was supposed top be making repairs and upgrading faulty equipment, not taking command of the engineering on a ship that was pitted against an entire fleet of extraterrestrial bad guys. And yet, here she was, doing just that. Funny how things worked out sometimes.
"Nanobots are almost done repairing the blast site. The hull should be secure in about one-" The ship gave another violent shudder as it was hit by another missile, the blast radius reaching to just a few feet away from the first hit. The mechanic cursed. "Make that ten minutes." She sent out the rest of the bots, hoping to speed up the repairs. As soon as they were out of this mess, the first thing she was going to do was set up a force-feild generator for this oversized tin can.

"Computer, Prepare to initiate a hard jump, as soon as we fire the main guns. Strap yourselves in! We arent supposed to be awake for these jumps, but we -can- survive them!"

Okay, that was actually crazy. Initiated a hyper-jump using a damaged ship while the entire crew was out of cryo? The damage my not be too severe at the moment, but at the speeds Kurek was planning to push the ship to, it could be enough to literally rip the hull to pieces. Plus, the human body could only stand so high a speed before shutting down. Even if they did survive the jump, most of the crew would probably be unconcious by the time they got... wherever they were planning on going.

She knew better than to speak up against the captain, though. Plus, it wasn't like she had a better idea.

"Ladies and gentlemen, this is your flight attendent speaking. We are about to experience some serious terbulance. Please fasten your seatbelts, bring your seats and tray tables into the upright and locked position, and pray to your personal god that we get their in one piece." Hoping she'd lightened the mood a bit, Angel strapped herself in, called the nanobots back once they'd finished temporary repairs, and braced herself for the jump.

Josh was not amused by the girls attempt at humor. This was no time to be cracking jokes, still if it had been someone else’s ass on the line he might have found it funny. With the large enemy fleet closing in, there ship taking multiple hits, and the order to hard jump being given things were going to hell in a hand basket. “Grab on to something men this crap isn’t going to be pleasant” yelled the sergeant to the privates throughout the room. Taking his advise Josh latched onto a nearby railing while thinking the same thing over and over again, How do I get out of this chicken shit outfit.

Hunter grimaced the moment Kurek announced the jump. The fighters needed to be back by the ship, and they needed to be there thirty seconds ago. Toby cut direct links to all the Wing commanders, exercising his power as Fighter Control to bring them all together. They were all getting beaten up fairly badly; the computer had directly interfaced him with a different officer for Charlie, so he assumed Charlie's previous commander had been shot down. "Alright gentlemen, bring your wings home. Nice and orderly now; Bravo, hold them at bay as long as you safely can, and then get inside. You all have less than a minute; go, now!"

He cut the link, and bowed his head for a quick second, offering up a short little prayer to the God he didn't particularly believe in that these men made it back in mostly one piece. He wish he'd had advance notice of the jump; it was going to be cutting it close whether they made it back inside in time or not. Then he raised his head again to monitor the fighters, sitting back a bit deeper in his chair and grabbing firmly onto the console to ready himself. The Airman was not a fan of hard jumps. Like many EDF personnel, he was trained in how to survive them... but surviving, unharmed... well, the EDF couldn't guarantee that.

He swallowed as the fighters streaked back towards their bays, mostly inside now except for some of Bravo and Foxtrot who were fighting a holding action with the few enemy fighters still near the ship. Calling up a direct link to each of their Wing Commanders, he barked an order to them both.

"Bravo, Foxtrot, back inside the ship! NOW!"

Without waiting to see if they listened, Toby again leaped out of his console and threw himself quickly into the Anti-Fighter post. He felt terrible abandoning those men, but if nobody was watching the enemy fighters then all of his efforts to save his own men would be for naught. He quickly brought the weapons to bear and started nailing as many of the organic freak-ships as he could. A few exploded in bursts of bright-coloured gore. He shivered. Didn't think he'd ever get used to that...

Missiles flew at the ship from all sides, along with streaks of light that marked the dark fighter's of the enemy. Laser beams, traveling at the speed of light, could be seen as they crossed the vast distances from ship to ship, ship to missile. Bright specs that were the tracer rounds of the heavy anti-fighter weapons winked out in all directions. The hull of the Ulysses was bright, light up by the flashes from the ships' guns, as they fired at the barely-noticable enemies that circled the ships like vultures in the night. The Colony ships, unarmed but heavily armored, huddled close to the Ulysses, controls slaved with theirs.

And then, the main cannons on the Ulysses fired. Streaks of light, blazing like the sun that was behind the ship, Flew towards the enemy, the wake they left obliterating fighters and missiles alike, the force of their exit causing the Ulysses to lurch violently to one side as the thrusters on the opposite side compensated. Then, in a second blinding flash of pure white light, the Ulysses and the Colony ships vanished.

Edward Kurek gripped the chair with white-knuckles, as the viewscreen spewed out colors that werent colors, shapes that werent shapes, places that werent places; Images of jump-space.

It seemed like a lifetime in the warp, his mind racing as it tried to comperhend the images...

Then it was over. The Ulysses and the Colony ships appeared into a dark, empty space. There was no star. There were no planets. Simply the white specs of distant systems.

The AI spoke up, sweet voice speaking quietly: "Jump complete."

It was almost impossible to tell how long they were in jump-space for. That was part of the reason Toby hated it. He closed his eyes, gritted his teeth, and held on as tightly as he could to the chair and console. His insides lurched around, his brain felt as if it were being squished by his skull... he could barely stand it. And then it was over.

He opened his eyes, gasping for breath, most definitely not the picture of composure he'd been during the fight. He fought it, though, and was able to bring his body back under his own control, slowing down his racing heart and the quick useless gulps for air. He really hoped they wouldn't have to do that again any time soon. Running a hand across his sweaty head, the airman got to his feet and surveyed the secondary bridge. It didn't appear damaged, so he sat back down and without hesitation got back to work, checking in on the fighter Wings.

"Alpha Wing, check in." Silence. Ominous, terrifying silence.

Then a crackle, and moments later, a hesitant, scared voice. "... uh, sir? Alpha reporting in. Our Commander didn't make it."

And so it began. This would doubtless be the story for several of the Wings. Toby acknowledged the poor man who had stepped up and informed him, and then slowly began to make his way through the next few fighter Wings.

Jay blanched at the feeling of the space jump. It was his first, and after that experience, he had no desire to do it again. It took a few seconds of normality for him to clear his head entirely. They were out in the true blackness of space, with not a single star or planet nearby them. That couldn't have been planned. They couldn't have intentionally gone out here, could they? Perhaps that was a question better left unasked.

After raking his eyes along the control panel for a second, he returned to weapons to the autofire mode. After all, computers have much better reaction time than humans, and Jay only could have gotten in the action as fast as his reactions would let him. Why not get a few extra shots in beforehand, right? No reason not to.

Once he was satisfied with his station, he looked around at the others on the bridge. They all looked as dejected and forlorn as he felt, but they all had an air of finishing their jobs, no matter how unsavory. The airman taking stock of his men was a prime example of this attitude. If only there had been no need for it. After a break in his thoughts, he asked a question that had just started scratching at his mind. He asked, to no one in particular, "What was that that just attacked us?"

Damn I never want to do that again thought Josh as he slowly stood up. He looked over the bridge at the people through the room. Most like him didn’t look all that good, but some were already up and doing there jobs. The airman was calling the fighter groups, the lieutenant was busy at his station. The civie at the capital ship station was putting his on auto fire, and the girl at the engineering station was looking at the damage to the ship. Josh looked over his shoulder at the sergeant who was standing ramrod straight and acting as if not a thing had happened. The other privates through out the room were like him in various stages of disorientation. “Stand up soldier” said the sergeant “Yes sir” said Josh weakly.

Angel squeezed her eyes shut as they jump started. Back on earth, she hadn't been a big fan of roller coasters.
This was like a roller coaster, on a Tilt-A-Whirl, on one of those giant wheels that spun so fast that you pressed against the sides from the sheer force of it.
The entire jump lasted less than a second, even though it felt like an eternity. The mechanic did a quick once-over of herself after she was sure they'd stopped.
The room was spinning.
She felt like she was going to hurl.
And her head? Yeah, an A-bomb had gone off in there.
It took a moment for her voice to catch up with the rest of her. "Okay, all in favor of never doing that again?"

Edward promptly puked. A combination of cryo-sickness and a jump in the rough like that.. Well. It was coming. He wiped his chin on his arm, coughing. Helluva good impression.

"St-..Argh, damnit.. Status report!"

His HUD lit up, damage reports coming through, though it skipped anything 'small', like missing fighters or minor hull breaches. "All ships intact. Damage to engine number 3. Damage to missile bays 1, 10-24, 34-78, and 91. Anti-fighter grid offline. Main cannons' suffer from a rotational malfunction. Casualties: Roughly 134 dead, 309 injured, and rising."

He rubbed his forehead, trying to stop himself from throwing up again. "..Anything.. Anything else?"

"Yes, Captain. Unknown life forms detected on-board."

Instantly, he sat up. "What?!"

"It seems we were boarded, Captain."

He swore loudly, starting to stand up, but something held him down. He looked at his legs, and swore. "Damnit! I'm pinned. Right! You, soldiers," He said, pointing at the sergeant. "Get your men ready and intercept those bastards before they find a way to relay our position! Everyone else, guard that damn door. And, someone, get me out of this seat!"

It was standard lock-down procedures for restraints to hold one in one's chair in the case of an emergency jump like that. Apparently, his had jammed shut. So he was wallowing in his own puke, while alien -dickheads- were coming to kill them all! Damnit.

The AI spoke up. "Captain, you may be suffering from cryo-sickness. Signs ar-"

"Shut up, Damnit! Tell me why they were -waiting- for us, you lousy piece of shit! They KNEW we would be there! How did they know, if we didnt?!"

The AI was silent. Ed just rubbed his eyes, mulling it over in his head silently. "Computer."

"Yes, Captain?"

"I want a record of every thing you were accessed during this trip sent to my terminal."
