Kore

"That's pretty. Can we buy it?"

0 · 301 views · located in Present Day: New York, NY, USA

a character in “Walking on Glass”, as played by Esana

Description

Height: 5'1"
Weight: 107
Age: Unknown/indefinite, looks about 16

Appearance: Originally, Kore's hair was a deep auburn brown. Over time a lot of the red bleached out of it, so that it's mostly just a chestnut brown, although there is just a bit of auburn left. It is long and wavy and most of the time either let down or tied in a braid. Kore is very athletic or at least looks so, although she's less than coordinated at sports. She does have a bit of natural, inborn grace, however. She's a bit flat, but has very toned legs. She has an oval face with a rather pointy chin. Her skin is very pale, and she burns rather easily. She has some faded freckles across her nose, although these are barely noticeable. Her eyes are golden-brown and occasionally have flickers of green in them, especially when she's using her power, although this could just be reflections from the light of the plants that she employs.

When she was found, Kore was wearing a wrapped robe dress of creamy shades that very much resembled a kyten. While she quickly switched to wearing more centralized clothing, Kore still has a preference for white or cream-colored sleeveless dresses. She dislikes tight clothing and prefers cloths that flow and allow freedom of movement. She also often uses a white hair band on her hair, although the color sometimes varies with different patterns, though it usually contains white. Kore wears pale pink ballet flats and occasionally uses pale colored accessories in her hair.

Personality: Before - Kore is cheerful, for the most part, although she can get cranky when she lacks sleep (anything less than 9 hours), lacks enough time outdoors (approximately 1 hour with sun, 2-3 hours without), has nothing to do (for a period of longer than 1 hour), or is denied food for a period of more than 4 hours. She has a wry sense of humor and likes to comment mercilessly on the wrongdoings or idiocy of others. She tries to bring the mood up whenever she can and is stubborn about her views. Once she sees something some way, she's very likely never to change it. Also, Kore is a perfectionist and likes everything to look nice and pretty and organized (although she is frequently too lazy to actually change anything).

Kore does have a very dark, very matter-of-fact view of humans and the world. She believes that its natural for humans to be afraid of them and that humans are innately selfish. They rely on their instincts, and their instincts tell them to believe in only themselves and to care first and foremost for themselves. She does not view this as 'dark', but instead simply calls it the truth. Most of the time, this is never brought up, although if asked, Kore will talk about it with little problem on her part. Also, this view of the world is extended to all creatures (the instinct, the habits) and so she doesn't really blame anyone for doing anything that seems terrible because she views it as nature.

When found - Kore is extremely susceptible to outside influences. She has no knowledge, but is curious about the world, although still mildly lazy about actually doing anything. Her cheeriness is still in place, although she does still get cranky for the same reasons. The major difference is that the new Kore is much more innocent than the old Kore and doesn't have the thoughts that humans are naturally selfish (though this might come back to her as the events progress). She also has a strange obsession with pretty things and plants and being around them can cheer her up.

Powers: Kore can increase the growth of any plant exponentially. This allows her (after flicking a seed or a plant, usually very small for convenience of transportation) to tear enemies apart with large thorny vines or to kill them more slowly with poisonous plants. It also gives her a very useful ability to capture people and hold them without need for carrying around ropes. She can also control the movements of the plants remotely. This power activates automatically when Kore gets emotional - plants will start to move, and just being around her can speed up the growth of plants, although she'd need to put in real power for the change to be anything very noticeable or noteworthy.

However, Kore's power cannot extend the plant's growth past what would have happened naturally. Also, the further Kore is from her plant, the harder it is for her to control it with any delicacy. While she can control the plant's movements, once the plant starts growing, it will set down roots and will be unable to move from that place (so no walking plants).

In addition to her ability to channel the power of plants, Kore also attracts the dead - shades (ghosts) approach her sometimes and call her 'Queen' and will obey her words. Monsters sometimes listen to her as well, and Kore has accelerated healing and cannot die as long as she eat ambrosia and drinks nectar. Without these two, her immortality is lost, though she keeps her powers.

History: Kore is Persephone, daughter of Demeter, the young earth goddess who was kidnapped by Hades and forced to become his Queen. She is later rescued, but the seeds that she ate while in the Underworld force her to remain half the year in the land of the dead. However, one day as she was being transported back and forth, a rogue Chimera attacked her carriage and took her and her escort by surprise. The escort was reduced to shreds (a process that rendered him unable to carry the message away to Olympus), and Kore was knocked out of the carriage and fell heavy to earth where she sustained head injuries leading to amnesia along with scars and bruises.

The scars and bruises quickly healed, but the amnesia remained. Kore wandered around for a few days and began to feel the pangs of hunger - an emotion that was alien to her. She tried to take food from a store, but got kicked out and almost arrested, although she walked into Central Park and somehow the cops walked right past her. Since then and since she felt so at home and comfortable in the park, she stayed there until she was found.

So begins...

Kore tilted her to the side and stared at Conor. He'd gone silent after the 'not exactly' and now seemed to be deep in thought, considering what she had said. She wasn't quite sure why, although she did have a faint feeling that she and Conor were fundamentally different. Something about being...what was the word?

She couldn't remember.

Finally, Conor seemed to come out of his trance and asked her, curiously, "So, is there... Anything else you can... Do?"

The question took Kore by surprise. It wasn't one that she was expecting to hear, and she didn't know how to respond to it. Was there anything else that she could do? Well, she could breathe and walk and talk - but he had already seen all of that. She obviously healed faster than he did - there was a possibility that she digested faster as well, but that had yet to be confirmed. She glanced at the kitchen absently, before returning to the question at hand. What else could she do? That was actually a good question - she wasn't even sure what the right answer was. If there was a right answer.

After a moment, Kore shrugged helplessly and opened her mouth to say, "I'm not sure what you mean - I mean - I breathe - air? But I don't think I have to. I can make plants move. They listen to me. I can make them grow faster, too. I -"

"Conor ~ Hey, Conor ~"

Distracted by the call, Kore broke off in the middle of her sentence and glanced away from Conor's eyes and turned to face the rest of the diner. A brunette with blond streaks in her chocolately locks was waving over at them. She had on light, glitter eyeshadow and mascara and looked as if they doubled the length of her eyelashes. It was a pretty effect, and Kore admired it, although it was a bit distracting. The girl seemed to be with a few friends, to whom she said a few words and then patted one guy on the back before making her way over to Conor and Kore's table.

She slid into the seat next to Conor and smiled at him warmly. "Hey, Conor. How're you doing? If you were going to just come to Pizza Hut, you should have just come with us." Her eyes flicked to Kore and she cocked her head to the side and smiled. "Or is this a date~?"

The expression on Conor's face was either one of complete discomfort and embarrassment or one of irritation - Kore wasn't quite sure which it was, although the former did seem to make more sense considering Conor's stammering. Kore turned her head to look back and forth between him and the girl who had come up to them, slightly confused at the situation. The question hadn't seemed all that threatening, so she didn't know why Conor was suddenly so nervous-looking.

So, Kore listened to Conor's ranting intently, and about halfway through had to cover her mouth to keep anyone from seeing the smile on her face.

'Friend of my Mom's daughter'? Given his state, Kore was fairly sure that Conor didn't realize what he had just said. If the words had been 'daughter of my Mom's friend', that would have made a lot more sense, but the order they were in currently - 'friend of my Mom's daughter' - wouldn't that just be your sister's friend? Kore wondered, still smiling. And though she couldn't remember any interpersonal relationships of her own, she was fairly certain that sisters didn't ask their brothers to take their friends out to get something unless they were setting them up.

And underneath the amusement was a bit of confusion - why was Conor lying? Was there something wrong with being with her?

Before she could ask Conor this, his eyes flicked to hers, and they were very, very dark. It was only for a moment, but it was scary enough that Kore closed her mouth and didn't ask anything. She looked down, her amusement fading quickly.

"Oh," The girl said - she either hadn't noticed Conor's slip-up and his glare or she was pretending that she hadn't. She gave Conor a light hug and Kore a brief smile. "I see. Parental duties" Her right eyelid dipped in what might have been a wink as she slid to her feet again. "Then I'll just leave the two of you alone." She waved at Conor. "Bye Conor ~" And then gave Kore another, much more obvious wink, "Bye Miss ~" before walking back to her table and joining the rest of her friends.

Kore blinked at her for a moment and then looked at Conor, the memory of the glare from a few seconds ago fading already. "She's pretty," Kore remarked absently. And then silence - she didn't know what to say, and it seemed better to let the silence stew.

Chloe, Kore thought. It was nice name, almost - lyrical sounding. She watched the girl as Conor paused in his speech. She had sat down next to a young man, rather handsome, blonde, with attractive green eyes. He slipped an arm around her, and there was something - not quite right - about the whole thing. Chloe didn't look at the guy, and he hardly looked at her. Both instead conversed with other members of the group, staying close, but seemingly not to connect with each other.

Conor's continued speech pulled Kore's attention back to him. He was apologizing. It brought her memory back to her lie, and, though it was still funny, she now looked at the more serious part of it.

Conor had lied.

She looked at him, waiting for him to finish the explanation, but he just trailed off. Kore considered saying something, maybe a little more direct, to force an answer from him, but before she could figure out what, the young man - the waiter - came back to their table. He was pushing a small cart with two plates on it and two glasses of cold water.

He stopped in front of them and placed one of the dishes in front of Kore, saying as he did so, "The Tuscani Meaty Marinara for you, Miss." Kore looked down at her dish. It was very bright, red and yellow, the mix of meat and tomato sauce thoroughly combined with fresh pasta. The smell was incredible, and just taking a breath made Kore feel like she was sitting at a grand table with a large fire at the end, attending a banquet -

She frowned.

A banquet? A banquet for - who? Celebrating - what?

Her eyes closed for a moment as the waiter put Conor's dish in front of him - another salty, savory scent - and then talked to Conor for a moment. She could see smoke in her mind - many different colors, each other lots of different scents. Words - droning mostly or cried in high-pitched, feverish chants. Arms raised towards -

Pain ran through her mind, and Kore gave the task up. It hurt too much - and besides, she had food in front of her. She returned her attention to the dish, a small smile crossing her face - it felt like a novelty almost.

Without bothering to explore the feeling, Kore picked up her fork and poked it into the dish. She scooped a small piece out and popped it into her mouth.

Instantly, her mouth started to burn - the piece had been small but probably fresh prepared and very, very hot.

As a reaction, Kore swallowed as quickly as she could, wincing as the food scalded her throat on the way down. The pain quickly faded, and she could feel places on her tongue where it felt like the taste buds had been singed, but even those were fading quickly - they were healing. She reached for her glass of water and took several quick sips, relieving the rest of the pain caused by the dish. When it was okay again, she looked at the dish and hesitated. It smelled so good...

Kore gave it another try, this time lifting the fork to her mouth slowly, giving it a light blow, and then carefully lowering it into her mouth. She chewed - and swallowed. The taste was a bit salty, but still savory and absolutely delicious to Kore's new taste buds. She took another bite, then looked up at Conor and smiled, her eyes crinkling a bit. "It's really, really good." She paused for a moment and then added, "Thank you!"

Kore let her eyes linger on Conor's for a moment, enjoying the warmth of the smile, before returning to her food. It really was tasty, and there was an almost...new taste about it all, though by the heat coming from the pasta, that wasn't surprising. It had probably, along with Conor's food, just been prepared. Still though, even knowing that, Kore's feeling of 'newness' didn't fade. In fact, it remained as strong as ever, almost like... Her eating slowed down as the thought bubbled to the surface.

It was almost like she had never eaten before.

But that wasn't possible. Judging by how casual Conor and the rest of the people in the little diner were about it, they probably ate all the time - she probably ate all the time.

So why does it feel like the first time? Kore wondered.

Before she could delve deeper into the absence of the memory and the pain in her head that accompanied it, the sound of Conor's voice drew her out of her mind. He'd asked her a question. Her brain scrambled as it tried to remember what he had said. She took a bite of her pasta absently as she thought hard.

“So what was it you were doing, sitting there alone on that park bench?”

The park bench... Kore had almost forgotten about it in the time it had taken to make it to the diner and order their food. Her eyebrows wrinkled as she thought back.

She had moved to the bench because it wasn't often frequented by humans, and she didn't want to deal with their noise and trouble. But something about the question, about the way that Conor had framed it, and about the way that he looked at her - something about that made Kore shake her head slightly. That wasn't what he was asking about. Not 'why was she sitting there' on the park bench, but more 'what was she doing there' in the park.

A question that Kore wasn't quite sure about.

"A few days ago," Kore began hesitantly. "A few days ago... I woke up. On the black road." She glanced out a window at the people milling about and the cards stuck in the seemingly eternal traffic. "I was covered in open skin wounds and bruises. And my leg hurt." Without really thinking about it, she touched her left leg. "Whenever I moved... it -" She paused, wondering if there was a better word for what she was saying. Nothing came to mind. "Hurt," She finished unceremoniously.

An image flashed in her mind: the first sight at waking up, black stone - was it stone? - pressed closely together, but not so closely that there weren't still sharp fragments to tear her skin more as she tried to move.

With a shudder, she went on, "I got up. I moved to the white road on the side. Everyone walked around me. No one ever looked at me." Kore touched her stomach, her voice still even despite the pain creeping onto her face. "I was hungry, so I... I went into a little building - and there was colorful cakes behind glass. I took one, and -" The pause lasted only a moment. "- And then, the man behind the counter came after me. I ran, and he - I think it was him - he called someone, and I got chased."

A dark blue shirt with a white logo on one side.

Kore's eyes closed momentarily, in an almost pained expression, but she continued, her voice still calm, but now with a bit of an edge, "It hurt to run. My leg - it hurt. But I ran until I hit a circling of trees - lots of trees, more than I could count." And now her eyes really closed. "I stopped there. The man had disappeared." She breathed out, her voice calming again. "I think I feel asleep. And when I woke up, my wounds were gone, and I could move without pain. For a while, I just walked around, and then, when the sun was almost setting, people came - swarms of people. They were noisy. They were..." She shook her head, her eyelids flickering to half-mast. "I moved away from them. I found a place where they didn't go. That first day, I ordered the plants around me to close so that I couldn't be found. But after that..." Kore lifted her eyes to Conor, catching his. "After that, it grew to be too much trouble, so I just sat there."

She held the gaze for a moment, and then took another bite of her food.
