"Hijas del Omnisciente," Ali said, stumbling over the Spanish. She spoke her own language slowly, and speaking any other compounded what might have otherwise been diagnosed as a minor communication disorder.

Tahira Ali had been taken to the interrogation room about ten minutes before Reeves arrived with Dawn, and was seated in one of two chairs, manacled hands resting on the metal table, head down, seeming to be staring at the intersection of the wall and the floor. At the sound of the door opening, she looked up, eyes narrowing with the movement, expecting to see the Lieutenant from the day before.

Ali's eyes followed Dawn as the woman sat across from her, though she did not make eye contact, her gaze resting somewhere between the woman's chin and shoulder, listening as she spoke. Other than her eyes, she hardly seemed to move. Ali did not know this woman; this Agent Moore was not the same man who had been here the day before. "It is nice to meet you," she said, speaking slowly, her English marked with a pronounced accent, "Agent Moore."

"I came here because of Rahah Almarfud," Ali said in her accented English, the Arabic words rolling off her tongue with a pleasing lilt. She shifted her weight, fingers arched over the table, resting gently on its surface, still seeming to be looking down. "What they desire to have happen, the death of worlds."

"It is the weapons they have, Agent Moore," Ali said, still not meeting Dawn's eyes. Her image, like silence on a monument, was mirrored beside them in the one way mirror, where, in fact, only Reeves was sitting. "They have nuclear weapons. Twelve of them, eleven for the godless cities, and the seal. The Father spoke of the End of Time. They wish it."

"They will be sent to the city called Washington, in the District called Columbia; to the city within a city, called the Holy See, the Vatican, hidden within Roma," Ali said, speaking slowly as she dropped the names, still seeming to avoid eye contact, "to the City called Beijing; the City called al-Quds Sharif, or Yerushaláyim; the City of sin, called Las Vegas; the City called Riyadh; the City called Berlin; the City called Tokyo; the City called Amsterdam; the City called London; and the City called New York." She shifted her hands, letting one cover the other, the chain of the handcuffs clinking with the movement. "These are the cities they call godless."

"I do not know where the weapons are," Ali answered. "Only that they are where no one would think to look. And they want - they want the End of Time to come in the summer, in the seventh month."

"Because I cannot let them do this," Ali answered, her voice breaking. She paused, hesitating for a moment before going on. "I can no longer - no longer stand by and, and do nothing." Ali shook her head slowly, not sure what to say. Was it not enough that she was doing all she could to stop it? To be asked her motive, this she did not know how to answer.

"That may be so, but that is what already happened, Agent Moore," Ali said, her tone somewhat mournful as she spoke. "I cannot change what I have already done. It is done. I am not who I was once, but I can never be innocent again." She dropped her gaze from Dawn's shoulder to the table, staring at a distorted reflection of the two of them in its surface. "I can only do what is right."

"I know nothing of American or other businesses," Ali said, still looking down. "When last I saw the ledgers, it was over forty year ago, and the names then are of those who have since passed on." She fingered a small dent in the table, as if distracting herself with it could save her from having to answer the other question Dawn had asked. Yes, she felt remorse. How could she not? Every day, she saw herself, and she knew what she was. And she could do nothing to change it. Helpless, against the whirligig of time.

Ali was silent for a long moment, only her fingers moving, rubbing absently against the edge of the table, the sound of the ventilation system and the soft clinking of the chain the only thing between sensibility and nothingness. When she finally broke the silence, her voice had grown ever softer, so that it was almost a whisper. "It happened, Agent Moore. Choices are made, and I made those choices." Ali swallowed, her discomfort with the line of questioning self-evident. "I saw that what I was doing was just as evil as - I left. It is done."

Ali's shoulders visibly drooped, her lips transforming into a thin line as she stared down the center of the table. "All right," she said softly. "I do not understand why - why you wish to know about me - but I will try."

Ali continued to stare at the center of the table. She did not return the gesture. Throughout the entire interview, she had not once made eye contact. After a moment, she spoke again. "Where I come from, it is not customary to speak so freely to strangers, concerning such heavy matters." She pauseed, her gaze sliding over to the one way mirror, and then she looked away, as if uncomfortable with their mirrored images. "I was born into war. Government was responsible for many ah-traw-see-tees," she said, mispronouncing the word, "against the people, and nothing was sensible. Hate was all I knew, all everyone knew. I gave into it. It strengthened me to do what I could never have done. It stole everything from me in return."

Ali moved her hands from the table, sliding them away, the chain scraping across the metal surface of the table, as she rested the fingers of her right hand on the side of her face, as if to hide herself from Dawn's searching eyes. "Hataf was a path to freedom for me, a family that could offer me everything I had never known. Fear, and unimaginable pain, were the only things that kept me. But I did not live long in hatred. I only died more, here, inside." She gestured to her chest, before lifting her hands, palms up, toward Dawn. "Now I can only offer everything I am left, that I might redeem in small part what I have done.... foolish hopes, for God will damn me after I leave this world."

"I claim no faith save that in God," Ali answered, folding her hands once more on the surface of the table. "That is the only thing I am certain of. As for former friends? I called them brother and sister, and they did as all true believers do. They took faith, and made it into evil. Islam is no more evil than you are, but Allah s'aahid, what we did - what they do - is evil in the eyes of God."

"It was only I," Ali answered, still staring at the table's surface. "A lie, perhaps, that it was because of those who - who loved me. But I was the only one, and it was only I. I wanted to show that evil met with evil only reaps more of the same. In that, I succeeded, if in nothing else." She closed her eyes for a moment before opening them again. "I became what I swore I would stand against. Just the same as - " she abruptly cut herself off.
