>hey man where r u? ive been waiting in the square for ages
>> at the starbucks
>goddamn u... k got it be there in a sec
Chess looked up from his mobile phone, sure enough there was a Starbucks cafe bathed in the golden evening light down one of the streets leading away from the square. He shook his head, annoyed at Marcus for keeping him waiting for no real reason, but slightly relieved that nothing about his old friend seemed to have changed, he was still the same old disorganized mess he was three years ago. Chess hopped off his perch on the fountain in the middle of the square and marched down the street to the Starbucks. Markus had been one of Chess' best friends when he lived in Port, he hadn't seen him since he left on his gap year trip to tour Asia. Just a few days ago Markus had suggested that they meet up again in town and Chess was exhilarated by the idea.
Chess reached the Starbucks and peered inside to try and spot Mark, but couldn't spot the tangled mess of red hair that distinguished Markus anywhere inside the shop.
> ur not in there!
Chess sent the message. Inside the shop a middle aged man in a suit with black hair slicked over in a businesslike fashion pulled a phone out of his pocket and checked the display. Time seemed to slow as the man finished reading the message then turned and looked out the window, searching for something. His eyes rested on Chess. A sweat broke out on Chess' brow as he stood there, the man studying him. He quickly sent another message to Markus' phone, and snapped his head back to the strange businessman. The display on the man's phone lit up, but the man didn't break his gaze . That was it for Chess, he was getting the hell out of there. As he turned he spotted the man in the cafe getting up from his table. Chess broke into a run, shooting away past the fountain, not stopping till he had traversed over ten blocks, and made four changes in direction.
Chess stood doubled over for a minute or two trying to catch his breath.
"Creepy fu-" His text message tone cut him off. Chess didn't even read the message, there was too much adrenalin in his system for him to even consider what just happened a coincidence. It was then he realized he'd never been to this part of town before. He took stock of his surroundings looking for somewhere to ask for directions.
