[[ The setting: A winter night, cityscape, December 1998 ]]

Oleander stood atop the roof of what he thought was the tallest building in the vicinity; the clocktower itself. The huge wheels continued to churn, never stopping, never slowing down. He had yet to have his fill for the night, yet he felt strangely sleepy.

It must be the weather. Despite all these years I have never gotten rid of this old habit.

Almost immediately, he felt a strange tingle down his spine. Every single of his senses suddenly peaked, giving him an adrenaline rush as his blood red eyes focused on a single target. She was a blonde, wrapped up in modern winter clothing with hurried steps as if rushing off to somewhere important; but he hardly noticed her appearance. He could smell her blood even from the top of the clocktower, and he liked her scent. Vampires love the blood of a virgin, untainted... pure; untouched by the dirty hands of other human beings. He was to have her tonight.

Elexis pushed pasted the busy crowed as she wrapped her arms tightly around her and quickened her pace, it was so cold outside and she was running late, she sighed inwardly to herself as a shiver ran down her spin, it felt like some one was watching her and she had to stop herself from turning around to double check, she didn't have the time to waste.
' why did i ever agree to this blind date' she thought to herself.
Elexis was 19 just out of high school, she didn't need to be worrying about dating, she needed to focuses on starting her career, if it wasn't for alice begging her to do this she would of been able to come up with some excuse, like visiting her parent out in the country.
Elexis wrapped her scarf tightly around her neck as she felt colder than what she had before 'this feels wrong' and 'your in danger' rang in the back of her mind as she broke out into a light run without even realizing.

Oleander couldn't even seem to smell the other humans as she pushed past them to move forward; their blood seemed pale in comparison to hers. He clenched his jaws as he saw her breaking through the crowd and moving towards a more deserted part of the town; she seemed to be heading toward a little shophouse down the road with a little green neon sign hanging outside the shop, swinging lightly in the cold winter wind.

- - -

James was tapping his right foot impatiently on the tiled floor of the cafe. It was open-aired, thus allowing the wind to tug at his scarf every once in awhile. With a sudden jerk with his right hand, he threw the scarf around his neck and let it hang behind his shoulder, cutting the wind off from toying with the scarf.

She was late. He detested blind dates like these. Just because he was too busy handling his career, his mother had forced him on such dates time and again, and he had no choice but to relent to her ceaseless naggings this once.

Never did he know, that this date would be his last.

after a few more minutes Elexis found herself outside of her destination, the green neon lightly slowly flickering as if it was about to die, she stood silently at the door for a few moments before entering, it was pretty empty, and older couple sitting in the far corner, and a younger looking gentlemen less than a meter from where she stood.
she did another quick glance, before coming to the conclusion that the young gentlemen she had saw was in fact her blind date for this evening, she studied him quickly, he was clean cute, a olive complexion, his clothes where clean and neat, and he was ok in the looks department. She shook her head at the thought, she was going to be polite and make general conversation that was the best she could do, she wasn't going to let a man side track her ideas, she sighed to herself before taking a deep breath and approaching the youn man.

" why hello there you must be james?" she asked sound as sweet and polite as possible " i'm Elexis " she said holding her hand out, before giving him a chance to talk, she hoped this was the right person, 'oh well, to bad if it not' she thought to herself as she smiled at him

James stood up, mainly just to maintain his gentlemanly image may he meet with his lady someday in the workplace. He took her hand in his and gave a firm handshake while introducing himself. He did all the formalities a gentleman should; walking over and pulling her chair out for her and waiting til she has been seated comfortably before calling for the waiter. "What would you like to have?" He paused, waiting for her to decide, while observing her features. Her blond hair was silky, with several stray strands lying around her scarf. Her clothes revealed little, but her face had a rather smooth complexion. She wasn't that bad after all. Maybe he should have gone on those previous dates his mother arranged for him.

Meanwhile, several more people entered the cafe, distracting James' attention from the girl. A couple strolled in slowly, the lady looking exceptionally enticed by her male companions' features for god-knows-what reasons. James didn't find the man charming at all, be it his inferiority acting up or otherwise. What attracted him more was a lone figure strolling in after the couple. He had a hat on, covering all his features lest his mouth, which showed no expression. James allowed his eyes to travel, taking in his entire wardrobe. He looked like a refined gentleman, his clothes all branded and worn with elegance and style. James felt a little intimidated by him and he returned his gaze to his date.

she smiled as he took her hand introducing himself to her, he pulled the seat out for her, and she kind of felt slightly awkward, but she didn't let it show on her face," i'll just have a salad" she said to him with a a soft voice.
he was looking at her, she could feel his gaze on her and she felt embarrassed, she didn't like people staring at her she was only to glade that the sound of the door opening had caught his gaze, and she sighed very softly in relief to herself as it seemed he was watching who ever it was that had entered.

the smile on her face was replaced with pained expression as her whole body froze, it was cold, extremely cold and she felt like she was about to turn into an ice block. she held her breath as he could hear the footsteps of the other customers that had just entered, every thing seemed to be in slow motion as she turned her head around to see who was behind her, the couple had already pasted her and she had only caught glimps the man with the hat strode past them. there it was again, as a shiver ran down her back [i]' you have to leave, just go... NOW[i]' the voice in her head began to shout, she was all confused and to scared to do anything, she turned herself back around to face james her blind date, as she tried to catch her breath, her had clenching the material at her chest as if trying to ease some of the unknown pained that seemed etched on her face, But it was all over in a few seconds and Elexis recomposed herself before James was able to focus on her again.

she waited as james ordered for himself, and for the waiter to leave before she attempted a conversation with him " s-so james, what do you do for a living?" she asked him in a soft tone as she tried to sound as interested as she was able to muster

James ordered both the salad and a club sandwich (the latter for himself of course) as he noticed the uneasiness of his date. She looked extremely tense as the colours on her cheeks immediately paled as the man strode past their table. He couldn't understand why, but he felt he shouldn't probe. Pretending as if it never happened, he continued his conversation with the lady. He knew she was troubled, and he tried his best to calm her down.

"I do design work for companies, usually freelance." He managed a smile in her direction, a trained smile; one he usually used in corporate functions. His hand slowly reached across the table and lightly touched her hand, trying to calm he down without actually showing it.

- - - -

The lone man remained in his seat as a glass of cherry red alcohol cocktail was served. His eyes remained unseen by others under the shadow cast by his hat, allowing him to observe the room without fear of others noticing. He watched as a male figure make his way to the washroom at the back of the cafe, leaving his female companion at the table. The couple had taken the corner seat, hardly noticeable; but nothing escaped his trained eyes. The lack of lighting had prevented him from observing any further so he shifted his attention back to the couple who had already been there before he came in. His eyes immediately trained on the female, her eyes hinting a slight sense of fear as she continued conversation with her date. A slight smile appeared on his thin lips.

she was glade that he hadn't noticed her discomfort, as he continued with their conversation and ordered his meal " so your a designer" she said only paying attention to parts of the conversation her body was burning up though she felt like she was about to freeze to death
why was it only her that seemed to have this feeling of unease, she didn't even notice that he had placed his hand over hers, instead she had turned her head slightly searching for the lone man, the man that seemed to scare her half to death, she scanned the room before her eye finally crossed him, but as soon as her eye had found him the fear intensified, and her body began to shake softly as she found herself wrapping her arms around her body to stop it shaking any further that what it was But her effects seemed to fail and her hear began to race at seemed to be an almost impossible speed.

Samantha stood by Noah the waiter that had served the young couple that seemed to be on a date " do i really have to go over there and serve him?" she asked pointing to the man sitting by himself " he creeps me out... can't you go over there and serve him and I'll finish running you table" she begged him as she quickly stole a glance to the man that creeped her out, she repressed as shiver as she looked back at Noah who was shaking his head at her ' Sam you'll have to do I'm flat out even if you do take one of my table i still have to get started on the clean up in the kitchen and preparations for tomorrow...just do your job if your lucky he might tip you" he stated to her trying to entice her to do it, and it seemed like it worked Samantha was slowly making her way to the man as she looked around her.
The closer she seemed to get the more scared she felt, she was almost at his table when she couldn't help but turn around, he had a drink that should be fine she thought to herself as she walked away as long as he had some thing she didn't need to go over there unless it was necessary

it was beginning to take its toll on Elexis and it was now to hard to keep the agony from her face, and she had grew even more paler than before " i can't do this any more" she said as she got to her feet, swaying slightly from side to side as she grabbed the side of the table to help steady herself from falling " i think i'm going to take a walk" she stated to James as she rubbed the back of her neck " i feel like i can't breath in here" she sighed to herself as she turned to leave, Alice was gong to scold her if she just left like this, so instead of going for a walk she though that she would just sit outside and ask James if he would like to do the same thing, ' at least out side i might not feel so... so sick' she thought as she turned her head back around and stared at James " or maybe not" she said softly just loud enough for him to here " James would you like to sit out side with my until our meal is ready ?" she asked.

Oleander wiped the blood stain from his face as he smiled at himself in the mirror. Contrary to popular belief, Vampires do cast reflections in mirrors; but only after they've just had their meal. She was just an appetizer, someone he had to entice into coming into the cafe with him to prevent suspicion. He had left her seated under the shadows, where the light from the lamp didn't seem to reach. By the time the waiter noticed she was dead, he would have been long gone from here. Re-checking his appearance in the mirror, he looked no more than a simple businessman with an exceptionally smooth complexion. He used to hate it, but has thus learnt to use his appearance to his advantage. His victims hardly noticed him before he struck because of his average looks.

- - - -

James was begining to get concerned. Elexis seemed to be extremely nervous, for reasons only she might know. "Hey, if you're really feeling that uncomfortable with me..." He began, but noticed she was barely listening to him. James felt a little unsettled as she continued behaving as if there was a stalker watching her, forcing him to look around the cafe as if it would cast away her suspicion. It was then when Elexis' voice caused him to turn his attention back to her. She suggested they wait outside the cafe, which he thought was highly un-called for, but agreed anyway. Her face was beginning to get pale and he was worried she might just faint. Taking her arm in his hand he gently guided her out of the cafe, at the same time throwing one last glance into the cafe.

- - - -

The man continued sipping his drink, watching as the man led the girl out of the cafe. Could she feel it too? The killing intent of the vampire was getting stronger and stronger as it got closer to its target. He reached under his coat and felt the coldness of metal seep through his fingertips. The show was about to begin.

Elexis aloud James to lead her out of the cafe, and the relief was nearly instant as a sigh managed to escape her, and her legs buckled from under her eventual giving into the weigh as she let her body fall to the ground the arm that James was supporting didn't seem to help at all the cold air felt refreshing, as she let her body sake was it the man that had entered after the couple alone, she shook the thought out of her head. She didn't even know the man, all she new was that being inside that cafe struck fear in her hear, a bone chilling fear that she couldn't seem to get a grip of.
the color seemed to return to her face, as she managed to look up at James " i'm sorry" she whispered to him, as she managed to smile weakly.
Elexis closed her eye as she let the chilled breeze cares her face 'blood... his covered in blood' she could see the images clear in her head, the young man she was with was covered in blood, the fear forever etched into his face, her breathing became some what labored as her head dropped into her hands " make it stop" she whispered as her vision seemed to blur slightly " make it stop" she said a little more louder, as she managed to scramble to her feet, staggering slightly as she gained her balance, all it took was one look at James, and the image of the fear that he had displayed in her mind was there, and that was all it took 'go...run...leave him' and with that Elexis ran.

- - - - - - - - - -

"samantha the order is up for the couple down the back" noah said as he place two coffee's on the table for er to hand out " right away" she called back out, in unusually dull tone, normally the young waitress was all cheery, but it seemed that the man that was sitting alone had frightened her a bit grabbing the two cups, and headed for the table.

Everything seemed to happen in a blur for James the moment he stepped out of the cafe. Elexis suddenly tore her hand away from his and began sprinting away like a mad lady sensing an approaching cyclone. A burning sensation caused James to reach for his neck with both his hands, completely taking his attention away from the now faraway Elexis. The streams of lights from the nearby street lamps reflected off his palms, turning into a blood red colour as they entered his eyes. The last thing James saw was a pair of jewel red eyes looking right into his before he fell into oblivion.

- - - -

Oleander detested having to go through so much trouble simply for one victim, but it seemed necessary for the rare blood he was chasing. He had learnt to clean up after himself properly, for he had spent years of his time studying the corruption and laws of this city; the city he had decided to call home, at least for the time being.

Time, it no longer matters to one who is immortal. What then, should matter?

Casting the thought out of his mind, he gave chase. There was no competition at all. It took him nothing but a few mere seconds and he was standing in front of the female victim, a wide grin spread on his face. "You're mine."

Samantha placed the two cups of coffee on the table, but it seemed that the woman's man friend had either left of gone to the bath room, she stood there for a moment, as she looked down at the woman that was now by herself, her head was on the table and her face was turned away from her " um...excuse me miss was there any thing else?" Samantha though she would ask in case there was something else that the woman would like to order.
she stood there in silence as it seemed that the lady was ignoring her ' HELLO ARE YOU EVEN LISTENING YOU STUPID B*&CH' she shouted in her head knowing that it was only her that could hear it " excuse me miss... is there any thing-" she said as she reached out and placed a hand on the womans shoulder, a scream escaped from her

- - - - - - - - - - -

it all happened with in a few seconds, she had broke away from James, and ran, and then he was there in front of her, it felt like she couldn't breath.
never in all her life had she ever felt as sacred as she did now "you're mine" she herd the man say, as beads of sweat appeared on her forehead.
her body was trembling, and she was unable to stop it from doing so " who...who are you?" she dared to ask him as her words came out in a choked whisper.
this was the man that had entered with the woman, the couple she had saw that had seated them self further away from every one else. the ones that had entered fore the scary looking man, way was it this man that had created this great fear in her, back at the cafe she was sure it was the man sitting by himself that was the source of her fear, but why this man he looked well maintained and some one that seemed to be of some importance to today's society.

"My name is Michael Oleander, also known as Dispater of Slaves In Chains in many parts of the world. Stories you hear of the oppressed turning into the oppressor themselves, most of them have been turned into Vampire underlings and given power under my command." He paused, as if to savour the fact of what he has been doing. "That is what I do and will continue to do for years to come." His voice contained a slight tinge of self-pity, but was quickly masked by his steely appearance.

Pushing even closer to Elexis, he felt her warm breath against his cold skin. Ahh. The sensation of life itself.. He knew she could feel his bitingly cold breath against her too, and he indulged in the fear caused simply by his breathing. There was nowhere she could run now, and he would take his time to savour this treat of his. It would be a fine experience, one he hadn't had in weeks.

- - - -

The man stood up and left the cafe immediately after Oleander. Pistol now firmly grasped in his right hand, he dashed out, only to see the male companion of his female victim laid against the wall of the cafe. A money sign was painted in the man's blood over his dead body on the wall, as if to signify he had died during the persual of debtors.

He spun around, looking down both sides of the street, trying to spot the vampire and his victim but in vain. He was too fast for him, even though they had left within a minute of each other. This vampire was an experienced and powerful one, to be able to mask his sensory powress normally used to instil fear in people simply by his prescence.

No worries. I'll track him down tonight. Pulling out a little device, he dripped blood onto a small greenish pad on the device using a syringe. The device immediately sprange to life, pointing out the direction the owner of the blood had gone. "I'm glad vampires do not have skin as sensitive as ours. Afterall, they're dead." He spoke to no one in particular, but simply to reinforce his own confidence that he had outwitted the vampire. He had slipped the syringe into the back of the vampire when he made his way to the toilet, and took it out only after he had drawn half a syringe full.

Elexis, tried to taking what the man was saying, but to her it didn't make any sense, vampires were only a legend " your lying... there's no such thing" she choked out as she slowly tried to back away, but her body was hard to control at this point ' wake up... wake up Elexis' she said again and again and again in her head "Michael Oleander... Disputer of Slaves... Vampire underlings... I DON"T GET ANY OF IT" she said some who managing to scream out the last of it ' "run...get away, you have to..."there's no use and you know it... your his for you your his for the taking"... "no that can't be you have to get away there's no such thing as vampires"..." Ah... i wouldn't say such thing, you the that something impossible can in fact be quiet possible"' she thought as it seemed she was trying to decide what to do, her mind was in chaos and she still stood frozen with fear, "wha-what do you want with me?" she asked him her words but a gasp, as it felt like was fighting for air.

He saw her reaction and was amused, even aroused, to a certain extent. A slight smile appeared on his lips and he bent down and bit gently into the soft flesh of her tender neck. He only broke the surface of the skin, letting blood slowly ooze out whilst he licked the wound.

"Vampires are as real as the night is dark. The only reason why we're called legends are because humans have always been cowards. They never dared to face up to the truth. When survivors of vampire attacks try to spread the word, they become labelled as witches and practitions of dark magic and are burnt on the stakes. Even now, in the modern world, people who claim they have seen vampires are being sent to what you call an asylum; a place for those who have lost their minds."

His lips returned to the wound and continued its work as he gave her time to digest the words he had just spoken. His heartbeat had accelerated past normal pulses as he continued to soak in the fear of this lady in his prescence.

All of a sudden, he stopped. Moving his head away from her neck, he held her there instead by lifting her chin up with his right hand. This time, he looked straight into her eyes, past her fear and straight into her soul. "You. You are afraid. Afraid of dying? Afraid of so many things... But because of this, I have decided to make a vampire of you. Whether or not you treasure this chance to live, or if you want to ruin it, it is all up to you."

Oleander was careful to take enough blood to satisfy himself before continuing with the ritual. A light kiss on her forehead coupled with a few drops of blood from a pure vampire lineage ( from Oleander himself, of course! ) and the ritual was completed.

"Elexis, you are now a vampire. But you are my underling, and will have to listen to my every whim and call. It sucks."

every thing was in slow motion, as she watched him lean forward, it was only a second, only a brief sting before she felt his cool pass over the top of it she bit on her lip, not knowing what else to do as she listened to his words, her body continued to shake he felt so cold, she was scared and didn't know what to do,. as he continued to speak, running wasn't an option and it seemed like it didn't matter if she was able to run anyway he was faster than her.

his mouth was back on her neck, as a wired burning sensation flowed through her body, it wasn't painful, but it frightened her even more ' I'm going to die' she thought to herself as a tear slid down her face, with her right hand she grabbed at the bottom of her top holding the material firmly in her grasp as her eyes began to grow heavy, she could feel her own life slowly slipping away as the burning sensation continued through her body, but as quickly as it had started it stopped "..You are afraid. Afraid of dying?..I have decided to make a..." she was only able to catch a few words, but as she looked into his eye for that instance the fear seemed to dissipate at least the fear he had originally placed in her heart,

she felt his cool lips of her forehead, and then something metallic tasting slid down her throat, and then the burning sensation returned, this time it was worse than before, it was painful, not having that much energy to start of with she didn't sqirem as much as she though she would have.

as fast as it had started it ended too, not completely though. there was still the burning sensation in her throat, she grabbed at it with her free hand " it burns" she managed to hiss "Elexis, you are now a vampire. But you are my underling, and will have to listen to my every whim and call. It sucks." his words seemed soft yet she could understand his mean or at least she hoped she did "why does it burn?" she asked.

"It burns because your body is changing. It is adapting to immortality." Oleander said it as a matter-of-factly. His attention was no longer focused on the girl, but on a newer presence behind her. Pulling her to himself so that their bodies are now flush together, his blood red eyes scanned the street.

There was nothing.

- - - -

The man was standing atop a shophouse, his pistol drawn and aimed. A little breeze had caught his coat and it flapped gently against his pants. He saw how the vampire had noticed his appearance, but was still unable to spot him. The process of converting a human into an underling is no easy feat. It takes away half the powers of the vampire temporarily, making both him and his underling vulnerable to attacks. Strange how he chose a street corner to do it, instead of bringing the girl back to his adobe.

With the vampire's senses dulled, the man wasted no time. His finger pressed down on the trigger, releasing a single silver bullet straight in the direction of Oleander's skull.

A single shot echoed down the deserted street, sending shockwaves through Oleander's body. He was not prepared for this. Within a split second he had pushed Elexis away; and using the backward force from the push, plastered himself against the nearest wall with a slight thud. There was a hunter around. What bad timing.. He almost grunted it out loud. Now he had to protect both Elexis and himself. He wasn't about to lose an underling the moment he created her.

Elexis was still confused, what was happening to her " "It burns because your body is changing. It is adapting to immortality.", as he spoke to her there was a sharp pain in her mouth like her jaw had been broken and being remolded, she felt him pull her close to him till her body felt like it was being crushed by his ' whats happened ' she thought to herself as she had come to the conclusion that something much bigger was going on apart from the fact that her body was changing, the echo of the shot rang in her ear, and every thing after that happened so quickly. one minute her body was crushed up against his and the next it was cold air until her body hit the pavement abruptly, knocking the little air she had out of her. pain rushed throughout her whole body as she desperately tried to grab onto something while catching her breath, gasping loudly she was hit with another wave of pain, this one much greater that the other causing her to scream as the burning pained rushed down her legs, the pain was to much and her screams became a dead shrill, causing near by windows to shatter ' its nearly over... its nearly over... oh please let it be over soon' she screamed again and again in her head her body began to convulse violently, as it appeared she was grabbing at her chest.

concealed deep withing the shadows of the night a slim figure watched while masking there presences, to them these sight was entertaining, to watch Oleander in this predicament was truly and utterly enjoyable, it was not every day that you would see a master vampire make this kind of mistake " poor child " the figure said, as her eyes glowed a crimson red, ' as if the conversion isn't hard enough' but it was only a passing thought, the woman turned slightly never taking her eyes from the entertainment below " my lady" a voice said from behind her " what is it now?" she replied coldly " it seems he has returned".

Oleander spun in the direction of the gunshot. The hunter had missed. He had missed the single chance he had at taking Oleander down, and now the hunter was to become the hunted. Oleander could feel his body rapidly recovering from the transfer of blood to Elexis. Immediately he leaped onto the nearest rooftop to gain leverage against his unseen opponent. He didn't have to see the hunter; vampires could smell a thousand times much better than they could see, which effectively made them rulers of the night. A second shot rang out, Oleander shifted his right leg just as the silver bullet whizzed past. He could hear the sound of the bullet slicing through the air, the momentary reflection of the moonlight on the silvery surface of the bullet.

Almost at once, Oleander knew the tide had turned. The second shot had almost pinpointed the position of the hunter. The hunter was definitely human, not a hybrid. A hybrid would have taken Oleander out with the first shot. Now dashing toward the hunter, he could pay his attention to his newborn underling. He had heard her cry ringing out through the night, the kind that would keep children shivering under their blankets for weeks. Her transformation was about complete.

Elexis' scream was soon drowned by a new bloodcurdling scream of a male voice. Oleander was standing motionless where the hunter previously was, a trickle of blood slowly made its way down to Oleander's chin, before finally free-falling to the cement below.

Elexis herd the sound of the gun as it fired for a second time, but the sound only seemed like background noise at this point in time, the convulsing had seemed to stop and Elexis had rolled on to her side curling up into a tight ball as the pain seemed to be dulling, but now she was to deal with another problam, ever thing seemed louder than what it had before and nos she found herself covering her ears trying to block out this unfamiliar sound, it was like a rushing river, and then the sound of a drum beating at a fast pace it was playing so loud in her head that she felt liek crying.

she pressed her hands harder over her ears, trying to make the sound stop, it wasn't until a sweet scent hit her that forgot what she was doing and looked up, the noised didn't bother her, But now she was confronted with the unusual brightness in which the night had. Everything was as clear as day down the poorly lit street and Elexis instincts began to kick in as she sought out the scents origin, her throat burned as she licked her lips.

down the end of the street, just over a kilometer away, was a young couple, that seemed to be fooling around, she focused on them and watched as the young man had reared the girl up against the wall, Elexis seemed intrigued as she watched, it fascinated her that she was able to make out such clear detail from such a distance, no it wasn't just that she was able to make out there fine detail at such a great distance which made her stair. it was that sweet aroma one of them gave of which had her transfixed.

Elexis pushed herself up as she sat on her knees, there was a weird feeling in her moths as her tongue seemed to sweet over something sharp, but she didn't think any thin of it.
it wasn't until something seemed to splatter in front of her that she had come back to her sense. the sweet aroma was replaced with something more grotesque and it forced her to look at it.it was at that moment that her former instincts took, instincts that might have just been of habit, if she was still human of course. she hunched over as her stomach seemed to churn as, the sight of the dead man and she felt like she was going to vomit, but nothing happened she stared at the ground as the blood oozed out of the lifeless being next to her, the burning sensation was still there but it was something she could ignore. a small breeze passed by her and with it it carried his scent, it was different from the other two she had only just come across, her gaze searched for him, but she was forced to look back at the ground, forgetting about the body next to her.
