I'd recommend the Belgariad &Mallorean, the Shannara Chronicles, Landover Kingdom (also by Terry Brooks), the Time Master's Trilogy, and the Assassin's Apprentice Trilogy. All are awesome.

The President of the Atlanta City Council is murdered and a new guy is put in place. It causes a big uproar cause everyone and their mom's liked the old President and it causes a stink. People are unhappy with the change and don't like the new guy, simply by virtue of he's new and they're resistant...
