I believe the best way to describe a violent scene without getting into gruesome details would be to make it slightly vague, so that the reader, based on whoever is committing the violent acts, can interpret the scene with their imagination. Like for example, instead of using: "He dropped out o...

Well read the posts the others have made, and then include your character into the central action that's taking place, that's what I did anyway.
