He might be, but keep in mind he's also a very driven young man, the only thing that really matters to him is power so he does what he must to gain it. He's strong for a student, but only slightly above average for a grown wizard.

Alchemy is similar to potions, but with a few things added, and thanks for the spotting on the others.. Yes, divination is only slightly useful at the best of times unless your an actual seer.

I think he means that necromancy would be a licenced & monitored subject-great for contacting the dead to see who killed them, ect. While stealing for one's own gain is a crime period-though I won't put a huge claim on this since i'm not 100% sure.
