Introduction
"The cruel fox laughs
As the warring spirits cry
There will soon be none..."
The shifty-eyed demon grins with devilishly sharp teeth, all nine fox tails swishing behind it. You're left staring down at a wooden board marked with pieces carved out of bronze- pieces in the shape of different animals. Exactly six pieces sat on the board, depicting different animals- animals you knew were in the spirits of people.
"With pawns such as these, we will create a game," The kitsune tells you, sweeping a claw across the board.
"A game more strategic than shogi, and a far more exciting gamble than Chō-Han! After all--"
The demon's grin splits across its face, impossibly wide. Earlier this kitsune had been in the shape of a human- but now fur continues to break from its skin, growing impossibly more demonic in appearance at it begins to tower over the board. Your breath almost flees from your lungs as you see the kitsune's grinning face above yours.
"It is much more fun to gamble with lives than with coin!"
As the monster continues to cackle, something seizes you from within. A desire- a desire to win against the kitsune's impossible game. It is rigged for you to lose...unless you put your faith in one of those six pieces.
Your arm involuntarily reaches out, and as you seize a piece, the world floods with white...
Takama-ga-hara- the land of the spirits. Bound in a strange mist, it is a land kept away from the rest of the outside world. It is a strange land that is populated by warring lords, warriors who defend their bloodline's honor through blades, and dark secrets.
Dark secrets- such as the existence of oni and spirits alike, of warriors that can call upon the power of their soul to unlock true potential and devastating abilities.
Looking at it now, it is a wonder that Takama-ga-hara has kept to itself for so long.
But there are demonic forces at work. Demonic forces that wish to escape the Land of Mist, to spread and wreak chaos on the world. And they are willing to use humans...humans with the potential to become spirits.
You awaken.
Last night's dinner seemed to have congealed into a lump in the pit of your stomach as you sit up, feeling miserable no matter how terrible or delicious the food was. The dream with that demonic kitsune had unnerved you...but it was the sudden power that you felt within your chest that scared you the most.
"What's going on with me?"
And that's when you heard it- a sound, coming from within you, a sound that was definitely not human.
No. It was the sound of an animal.
Your animal.
Firstly, you obtained the Spirit Essence- passive and active abilities depending on your animal. It can give you anything in accordance with your spirit- enhanced strength and speed, flight, perhaps even elemental manipulation. While some of these can emerge without having to fully rely on your Spirit, you find that overuse of these summons your second ability.
The Spirit Armament. Strange armor or weapons that emerges when the warrior enters into a state where they are fully using their Spirit Essence. An experienced wielder can summon these at will- though at the time, overuse of your Essence made it come out sometimes.
And lastly- a message.
A message detailing Spiritual Ascension- to achieve ascension and make your spirit become more powerful. And the only way to do that is to apparently slay the person who gave you your power...or slay another person who had spiritual powers, like you.
Left with only this knowledge, you realize that your red string of fate had been tied- tied to different warriors, whose names you didn't even know.
And all red strings led through the Imperial Capital- Ashikaga.

Re: Samurai of the Inferno
Haven't decided on a spirit animal as of yet but the ones I am thinking of are; Turtle/Tortoise, Shark, Alligator, or Vulture. Open to suggestions as to which of these I should go with.
Thanks.
Edit: Decided on going with Shark since it was the easiest one to come up with unique abilities for it. Was interested on what general time this story would take place to decide on a proper face claim.

Re: Samurai of the Inferno
I still have a lot of brainstorming to do in regard to character ideas, but here's some basics-
Name: Ueno Tsubame
Age: 17 (I'd make her older but the FC I want to use looks a bit young)
Spirit: I'm still debating this. My current candidates are a Praying Mantis, a Jellyfish, or an Octopus, or maybe even an Eel?? I have some research to do on each of them before I decide.
I think the direction I plan to go with her is to have her be very gentle, graceful, and soft-spoken. She does what she's told and doesn't complain, but hides a much fiercer side to her behind the facade of obedience and femininity.
I should have a WIP in within the next few days~
Re: Samurai of the Inferno
As per tradition, here are the basics + image:
Name: Nao
gender: male
Age:19
spirit animal: Snake
Brief introduction
Sly, uncaring, a murderer. Nao kills all who dare cross him, though he plays his games smart, hunting slowly, poisoning his victims before doing any mortal damage. Much like his animal, Nao could be the most loyal guardian if he is not angered, it all depends on the person who is before him.
Sometimes he is seen with white hair, the majority of the time with black.
Nao isn't someone who plays nice.
