Anderson, Texas. Population 280. It's such a small little town, with its fair share of farms. Not many people visit this town, mainly because they don't know about it, but it's definiately a gorgeous town. There is, however, a major flaw to the otherwise perfect town. There is a small population- about 50 people- of a mysterious subspecies called nightmares. Ever since the beginning of time, the nightmares have been around in that one specific area, never leaving. They allowed humans to come to them, blending in perfectly, marrying them to spread the gene. They still have yet to be noticed. However, the new generation is beginning to get a little reckless, showing their true identity, aswell as telling people who they are. Currently, most of the people are dismissing this as a rumor, but the evidence is beginning to become more and more convincing...

I. The humans
The citizens of Anderson are just like your normal humans. There's good people, bad people, black people, white people. All the kids belong to a single district, with one Elementary, one middle school, and one high school. Everyone knows everyone, except, of course, for the freaky loner people. Most of the people live on farms and ranches, but there are a couple people who just live in normal houses. There isn't a single POOR person, even though some people are richer than others. The citizens have been tortured by the nightmares ever since they moved to or were born in the town. Every single person, no matter how old, has been a victim, even if they don't know it. The nightmares are horrible and everyone remembers it the day after, but they are dismissed as normal nightmares. Sometimes, a person is killed in their nightmare, but it's still dismissed as an unexplained death, no matter how many people die like this.



II. The nightmares
The nightmares came to be just a little bit after the humans, only living in a specific place. They aren't their own species, just victim to a genetic disease. The disease started when one girl ate a mysterious black berry during the end of the ice age. The specific berry went extinct after the ice age, but not before affecting quite a few people. The berry planted the gene, which can only be passed on through birth.
A nightmare isn't born knowing what it is. They give off a very strange, eerie vibe to anyone who meets them, but don't have any powers. At the age of 16, the parents (or parent, in the case of one human parent) explain what they are and guide them into their new life.
The power of a nightmare is simple; they transport their soul into another persons dream and feast on their fears. A nightmare has complete and total control over the person, and have access to every fear, secret, or memory that person may have. Without "feeding" on a nightmare every month or so, the nightmare begins to have some... problems.
Some nightmares refuse to accept what they are. They think it's unethical and simply will not create nightmares on innocent humans- or any humans for that matter. They think they'll be fine but... They go insane. They are often locked up in mental hospitals or even put in jail, since they are constantly angry and violent, seeing things and hearing voices that aren't there. Once they go insane, they can't be brought back. Ever.
The newer generation of nightmares is getting a bit careless in protecting their identity. They meet a human boy/girl, fall in "love", and reveal everything. So far, it hasn't caused too much suspiscion, but there are a couple humans who believe in it, which is definiately not a good thing.
There are many cases where a nightmare marries a human, but rarely do they actually care for said human. Their real motive is reproduction. All children that have a nightmare parent are instantly born a nightmare, no acceptions. Often, the human is clueless about everything. Many time, a nightmare will "feed" off of their spouse while they're forced to stay married, then kill them off once they are done with reproduction. Only a couple times is there a case of true love between these couples, and the nightmare is usually avoided throughout the nightmare community.
