Verseship: On the Edge

Verseship: On the Edge

0 INK

You have waken up on a ship in the far reaches of space. Three Questions Exist: Who created the ship, where is Earth, and why are you there? Questions that all need answers.

881 readers have visited Verseship: On the Edge since Mr. Baneling Squishy created it.

Introduction

Technically this is based off of my own work: Verseship

Space. The final frontier.

Its kinda scary really. Especially when you are lost in it, with no clue why or how you got there, or who built the ship you woke up on. After various debates, it is named Verseship, for Universe Ship. You are running on a skeleton crew of what you need. A handful of essential crew, a few people designated to use the weapons properly. The crew is made of people of all ages, children as young as six to seniors as old as 80. No amount of people clustered around any pparticular age group. However, you all wake up with knowledge in a particular field of the ship.

Image

The ship is massive, consisting of many floors and an advanced weapons systems. Its primary weapon fires a very powerful blast forward, destroying anything in their way. It also has Anti-Fighter cannons and Seconday Heavy Cannons. The ship has an energy barrier system that protects anything that isn't made of its own hull and has a special transmitter transmitting an electrical signal throughout the hull of whatever is passing through. Something too big for any missile.

The ship is also equipped with a Wormhole drive, that requires a powerful Power Crystal. This is currently missing. However, secondary engines and fuel systems are online and operational. Until a power crystal is uncovered or recovered however, travel is significantly slower and systems are less effective. The ship has an onboard tram system from the front to back of the ship, several cargo bays, various laboratories a few hanger bays, some empty, some filled with shuttles that look kind of like Beetles. Various energy weapons and workshops are throughout the ship...

ImageImage
And no one even knows what happened. Some people think aliens, others think humans. Humans had just commercialized space travel to help establish colonies. So its not far fetched this was done by humans. The fact is, no one knows who or why.

Here are the following jobs people can hold:

Security
Medical Officer
Engineer
Ship Weapons Tech/Operator
Shuttle/Fighter Pilot
Verseship Pilot
Comms and Data Tech

However, something to remember is that everyone has secrets. EVERYONE. And the stress of being in space, alone or only with a sibling, It can be maddening. Combine this with those dirty secrets everyone has, and the biggest threat may be internal and not external.

Also, someone far away sent a message that reprogrammed every AI that receives it to go homicidal. And the ship had an AI before the crew disabled it from all systems other then being able to analyze situations and think about what it has done.

(Sorry for it being a bit late, busy day)

Jeremy was sitting on a cliff overlooking the shoreline. He wasnt quite sure what he was expecting, but he was expecting something. The sun was setting, and his brother walked up behind them. "Isn't the sun supposed to be rising?"

"Not when its only just begun" Jeremy said, and then everything went black.

Jeremy woke up in a sweat. It was only just a memory. He looked over at the other side of his bedroom, and then scanned the room around him. It looked like his bedroom. It felt like his bedroom. BUt it was on a god damn spaceship in the middle of nowhere in unknown space. He was shaking, and he tried to calm himself down. His eyes calculated the room, looking for threats, but found none.

"Its okay Jer" his brother said sleepily, his covers still over his head.

"Its morning. I am getting some...whatever that crap is that is like coffee".

Jeremy went towards the cafeteria, and to get some food. Everyone looked like strangers to him still. And as a result, he had this callous look on his face, as if he could justify sacraficing any of them for his own good, or for the good of his brother. He was dangerous for his age, even if he wouldn't admit it.

He sat in his chair as was the usual for the Captain of an unknown ship, since no one could see his face, no one could tell how he looked every day just sitting there. But his voice sounded strong and convincing enough to turn to for inspiration, a sign that hope may yet exist if one did not give up on it. Raising up a hand, he presses a button to bring up communications with the medical bay. "This is Alpga." He says.

"What do you need today, sir?" A voice responded.

"I want everyone currently awake on the ship to have their weekly check-up. We need to make sure no one is getting sick, mentally breaking down or anything else that could hinder our progress."

"Of course sir, but what about you?"

"I will come in later at the end of the working hours. I will make the announcement now."

"As you wish Captain, medical bay out." So communications ended, and Alpga presses another button, bringing up communications across the entire ship.

"This is your Captain speaking. Today looks to be another work day, please remember safety first for yourself and your comrades and let us not forget the current schedule. Everyone will take their breaks at the according times set up. During your second break, I wish for everyone to take their weekly check-up in the medical bay. I must remind everyone that this is mandatory and that refusing to go is not an option we can take. I also must remind everyone that tomorrow is a meeting day, so remember to adjust your schedules, as I wish for everyone to participate and speak their minds. In our current state, I believe communication, dedicated work and other things will help us grow stronger. Alpga out."

"The time is... ELEVEN AM and .... FIFTEEN minutes, this is your requested notification alarm". stoically stated the Yankee toned computer, an arousing buzzer was played following the brief message - irritating Law's senses, gathering his wondering mind to consciousness.

The computers time announcement repeated:"The time is... ELEVEN AM and .... FIFTEEN minutes, this is your requested notification alarm. You have... TWO inserted notifications on your immediate labor schedule; ONE, Inform captain... Error - inappropriate remark detected -, of the security situation. TWO, revise security team labor schedule. Notification, end."

Law yawned and looked around the room, it was quite familiar to him - pretty much identical to his own Mars based Rangers office though undoutably faked, which was why he had no qualms of napping in the office with his feet branching over the "priceless" 19th century original Victorian desk. Most residents had received identical quarters to the ones they had left at home, but since Law hadn't bothered with quarters since he created the rangers whomever had abducted them to this place chose this to be his "home territory"... where he would feel safe and secure, and obviously bugged by half a dozen cameras and listening devices.

Law didn't fall for it one bit, he had gone through inch by inch of the room but had come out empty handed. None the less, a bug not found didn't mean there wasn't one.

Just as Law was about to attempt to "start the day with a smile and get it over with" he heard the voice of the "Captain", instructing them to undergo under intrusion of his self proclaimed authority. Back on Mars Law would have busted anyone for such an order, but he decided instead to "go along with it" until an "unexpected" security alarm would call him away... at a most convenient time.

Sure, it wasn't very manly but Law never did give a damn about nonsense which generally rendered manhood obsessed buffoons six feet under. The truth was that for whatever reason, the majority of the people out here adhered to this megalomaniac and his command, despite him not even having the honest decency to even show his face... if he had one. Law could not just bust him out, too dangerous. With that AI which only he could tackle... of course ever so to his own convenience, Law knew he would have to bide his time and build up a case before he could space the tin man.

Feeling rather peckish, Law made his way to the Canteen... or cafeteria as the Yanks called it. Law grabbed a fine looking spaghetti and volunteered a probably medically unfortunate portion of bacon to the meal. A slosh of green salad and a large glass of soda later put Law on a table, near to a kiddo Law remembered as Monro, or somenthin like it.

Curious, Law initiated conversation though not directly aimed at the boy - more to himself.

"Bloody med checks, can't help but wonder what they are looking out for... or what they are putting in".

Jeremy got some food, choosing carefully, as well as some coffee. Or what the thing was that was close enough to it.

Jeremy was deep in thought when Law asked him a question. Jeremy wasn't quite sure what to think of him. He seemed intelligent enough, but Jeremy harbors suspicions against all people with authority. Politicians, Generals, police officers. All had power, and there was no way they were all honest, some obviously were abusing their power to some capacity. So he was suspicious of anyone he didn't know with power.

"Maybe. I don't trust any of you yet. But I swear he better not make this weekly. Or at least it better not be invasive. I have had enough of those already. I mean, seriously. One every six months to make sure I have been a good orphan and not getting into drugs or excessive fights. One every three months to check for abuse. School check ups for the exact same thing. I swear, it seems like they make excessive tests just for orphans" Jeremy told him.

"Anyways, it wouldn't surprise me. People with power tend to be controlling assholes. I am doing a bug sweep on myself afterwards. But yeah, I think everything is finally stabilized. Still getting used to the engineering controls. Just because you know what to do doesn't mean it's simple and easy. Plus, it seems like installation of everything isn't even complete. There are still several components missing, including a power crystal to provide proper levels of power to the whole ship and power the Wormhole drive".

Jeremy looked around again. He wasn't sure what he was looking for. Probably his brother. But it was more of a reflex to him then anything. He sometimes subconsciously scanned the room and area he was in for threats. Supposedly, it was part of his abandonment issues. Like, the fact his parents abandoned him and he was never adopted caused him to think the whole world was against him or something. He could be friendly, and he had friends, but trust comes hard to him.

"Maybe they are trying to get all the hot people naked and this is their poor attempt of an excuse" he said, eyeing one of the female members of the crew around his age. "Though it seems rather redundant thanks to the shower room, there are some people..." He turned back towards Law. "Well, regardless of their intentions, I would rather not risk causing any conflict right now".

He then noticed as his brother had finally mustered his way into the room, obviously still groggy and sleepy, and say down next to Jeremy. Jeremy passed his half eaten breakfast to his brother. The remembrance was remarkable. "Thought you might want this".

Alpga looked over a map of the current system they were in, sitting in his chair as usual, while moving around pieces of it here and there. At least, the parts that were revealed, anyway. "Navigation crew." Alpga calls to them. "Any nearby planets?

"No, sir. We still have no confirmed signs of other life, however, this could be either a good thing or a bad thing."

"I know." Alpga continues messing with the holographic map. "It means one of two things so far. Either this system is mainly empty, and we can just call it the Nothing System, or something else is out there, cleaning up."

"How do you figure that?"

"If someone wanted to be reckless and attack, they would of by now. No, something is definitely waiting for us. And I want to know who, or what, is waiting." Alpg stands up to his feet suddenly. "How are things moving along?"

"Very nicely, sir. It seems whoever put us here put a lot of supplies for us, but in our current state, we are only limited to so many of them, we'll have to think wisely when using them."

"Then the plan is to make one for now and make sure it works." Alpga walks around the room. "In our situation, we can't afford careless action, or stupidity either. What we can do, however, is keep track of any planets we come across. If I'm right, one of them should be inhabitable, and once we find others, we can start inhabiting planets instead of going through space constantly."

"That sounds like it'll take a long time, sir."

"It will, my good man." Alpga stops before a screen. "What's that?"

"Oh, this is just keeping an eye on the AI."

"I see. I better talk to it and see what it has to say. I will only give it ten minutes though, if it doesn't have anything useful to say, we'll cut off comms for the day on it." Alpga returns to his seat and sits back down in it. The situation can't be helped, we're in the middle of space and so far, we've found nothing. Keeping everyone sane and healthy is the only thing I can do right now, if I don't, they'll blame me later for letting it consume them. We'll have to find somewhere that allows for a decontamination room. With any luck, it'll help make things less tense. But I have a feeling some of this crew won't make it easy for me, they will understand my intentions later, but for now, let them enjoy themselves I say.

"Anyways, it wouldn't surprise me. People with power tend to be controlling assholes. I am doing a bug sweep on myself afterwards".

Law didn't really pay much attention to the kid, he was too concerned with enjoying his grub which turned out to be pretty good.

He did want to know where the meat was coming from, that is until he conjured up several unpleasant thoughts which satisfied his curiosity but not his appetite.

Law might be darn right disrespectful to people he didn't want to hear but he mostly did listen when he felt someone was actually expressing what he felt rather then saying all the meaningless crap which came along with it.

Law relaxed on the seat, meal finished with but a short swipe of a tooth pick in his way from gettin' thee hell out of the crowded room. Mission completed, law smiled briefly and spoke in his usual cynical way.

"Kid, every real or fake anarchist experiment in human history has beena dud; The Commune of Paris, the Menshiviks in Russia, Republican Spain and the New Left movement. What they share is grizzling history of failure against the more organized, centralized "controlling assholes". If you want a new society, you need to bring down an old one and for that you have to be quite the asshole.

Even in a democracy, you vote for your temporary dictator... under constraints which frankly do not mean much of anythin. You you ether hope for is a benevolent one, someone who gives enough of a darn,or get there yourself".

Law stopped when he heard and announcement calling out for people to attend the medical check up, just as law came to stand up - an alarm conveniently sounded on his personal communicator .

"Sir, there is a... situation down below, we could use some back up". said a voice.

Law said "Copy that, I will bring the others and be right there".

Before turning to leave, he said one more think to the kid:" Kid, you have power, like it or not". Said law, refering to the kid's engineering job.

Before Law left, out of all the things he wanted to correct, this came up as the most prominent. "That is a Democratic Republic. A Democracy itself just has every single person voting on something. Or at least every single person that it affects. You do not vote to elect anyone in a Democracy. You vote to elect them in a democratic republic".

He then added "And I already know every society is going to have flaws. Mostly because us humans can never agree on anything. Ever. It took who knows how long for our ancestors to just create a damn alphabet. And they are still finding new interpretations that change shit".

Jeremy said it so calmly, its as if what Law said had not really phased him. At least emotionally. Either way, he got up to look at some stuff as well. He needed to keep his mind occupied. He considered just getting the damn medical check up out of the way. The other option he knew of right now was making sure nothing was jamming the cooling systems for internal air circulation. Which, for some god damned reason, had gunk in it. He was pretty sure that it was being created by the cooling systems somehow as a byproduct. That will probably need to be cleaned out. And he did not want to clean it out.

He also didn't want to do the medical checkup. So he needed a third option. Or a fourth. Or just anything that meant he wouldn't have to do a damn medical checkup. And if he did, they better not do that psych eval or he might just kill someone. Though, considering what that would imply, the result would justify the test. He would need to reconsider this.

He thought he heard a voice, but he ignored it and continued to move on. "Okay. I could see about what I can do with all our resources and spare parts. Hmm. Maybe I can make something new. Just to bad I don't really know what I need..."

That is when he realized, during all his thinking, he had wandered near medical. "Damnit. Fine, but only to get you over with".

If fate existed, he would murder it later.

(Okay, time to speed things up a little)

As Jeremy got all his checkups and examinations done, which were exactly what he had expected to be like, annoying and similar, one part stood out at him. Their Doctor, or Medical officer, whichever term you prefered, seemed to be dealing with something else as well. She had always seemed a bit off to Jeremy though, so maybe it was just his suspicious mind. He did question when she brought a needle with her full of some substance.

"Ummm, what is that? I really hope you have some explanation that is damn good for wanting to inject something into me" he told her, clearly not trusting anything this medical officer did. However, it was the only one they had, so the point was impossible to argue on why she needed to do things since only she could understand them. Still, he hoped maybe she would have an explenation that used words he did know.

"Its a neural relaxant that...".

"Doesn't exist" Jeremy told her, not actually knowing if it was impossible or not.

"One, yes they do, and two, who here is the medical professional. I can easily and truthfully tell you they existed even back on earth. It might use different compounds, but I checked. Its a neural relaxant. It should help ease your mind to all of the changes in our surrounding from what we are used to".

Jeremy easily knew what she meant by that. It meant they thought he, and maybe the other as well, were in danger of having a psychotic break. He himself found it unlikely he would suffer that, but the others he didn't know so well. Could they be eating with a time bomb?

He quickly felt a sting as she injected him with a small portion of the substance in the needle, allowing it to enter him. Then he just felt normal.

--------------

The gunk in their air conditioning hid something else. Something that they did not expect.

There was an egg in there, somehow preserved by the vaccume and too low velocity to trigger repelling from the barriers. And it was hatching.

(Dun dun duuuuuu....but no one will ever expect what comes next...guess you will have to post to find out)
