Luka sat in his office. He had amused himself in the time since Subject SEVEN's tests by reading the report given to him by the senior staff member who had run the test. The results were, in a word ... impressive. The time it took for Subject SEVEN's bones to set after they had been broken was steadily -- and rapidly -- increasing. At this rate, it seemed like it would not be long before the process was instantaneous.
"Well this is interesting," he said to himself, leaning back in his chair. He sat there thinking for a moment before he decided that his subject had been allowed enough rest for now. He would go check on her.
Luka exited his office and made his way to subject SEVEN's room. It was rather close to his office, but he chose to take a longer route to avoid coming across any of his colleagues. He did not have a high opinion of any of the other doctors who worked at AveoLife. The female made him uncomfortable, and one of the males was constantly saying odd things that made Luka fear to be around him. Dr. Michaelis seemed dedicated enough, but when one was dedicated, he generally had little time for trivialities like striking up a friendship.
That was exactly how Luka felt. Even if he wanted to "make friends" he had little time for anything other than his work. And so, Luka avoided human contact when he could help it. His toys, however, were a different story.
Luka walked into Subject SEVEN's room and found her asleep in her bed.
"Wake up, my pet," he called loudly.
"I'm glad to hear it, of course," Soraya replied, though she did not believe a word of it. She continued to look at Adrian as he shifted in his bed. If there was any room for pity in her line of work, she would have felt it for this boy. But, unfortunately, pity was not something she could afford to feel.
Soraya took her eyes off him and looked back at the door. She sighed and took a few steps closer to it.
"If nothing else," she said as she placed her hand on the knob, "you should at least eat something. It isn't healthy to starve yourself, and if that is your plan, I might as well tell you now that it won't work. I'll have them sedate you and hook you up to an IV. It probably won't be pleasant."
She said these last words jokingly, but in truth, that is what would be done if a subject refused to eat.
"I'm headed to the cafeteria. Would you like to join me? If not, I could have some food sent to you."
