In her makeshift office at HQ, Brihan worried. She was a worrier by nature. She worried for the unknown boy on the news who had been noticed by the humans. She worried for the Armada agents who had gone to retrieve him. And she worried for all the other broken and lost mutants out there, wandering and alone in this unkind world.

In this place Armada had tried to make a safe space for dispossessed mutantkind. Sometimes Brihan wondered if they were really making a difference, and if the price was worth it.

Dismissing those negative thoughts with an impatient shake of her head, she turned her attention back to her little office. Most of the space was taken up with a computer, chemistry equipment and storage cupboards. It wasn't much, but it was something, and she hadn't had anything before. She wished she had some photographs of some loved ones to put on a shelf somewhere; she had seen that in the movies.

Tonight was a good night for some research... although she had another responsibility to take care of first. She logged on to the computer and brought up the file she had been working on earlier: Thomas, a recent arrival. He had been sleeping in their accommodation for the past two days and would need a medical exam and history in order to complete his registration. He looked fairly young, so Brihan would have to arrange some kind of education for him. She had long wished for the Armada to offer their own classes, but they were still far too small and underfunded for that to happen. Instead she would have to register him at a technical college, which would mean providing him with a new identity. Then she would have to help him with accommodation and finding part-time employment. Hopefully he would be on his feet and ready to move out within a month or two, which would free up a bed for another arrival.

She minimized his file and rubbed her temples. She was probably overworking herself, but there was so much to be done and so few of them who were able and willing to do it. And besides, this was her life now. She didn't have a family, a past, a purpose, nothing. So long as she was helping others, making a difference in their lives, maybe her own life had some meaning.

She decided to have a walk around and check on their residents to make sure they were all settling in okay. It was important for everyone to stick together and foster a sense of community if they were to have a chance at surviving. She got up, stretched, and left her office to stroll through the corridors.
