His original plan had been to light another cigarette, just to annoy her, but two thoughts struck him. One, it probably wasn't allowed in here, and the clerk might get into trouble (that was the reason he gave himself) and, two, that deep inside he felt he wanted this strange, sassy girl to like him. But he didn't admit the second reason even to himself.

"Shame she's such a bad-tempered bitch," he thought. "She is kind of pretty though, in a funny sort of way."
