Lyle stared at the babbling woman. He couldn’t make out quite what she was saying. Something about alcohol and undeveloped brains and rat people. Where did the rat people come from? He’d never heard of those in his whole life. He gave her a quizzical look, decided that she was probably inebriated herself. One thing he had figured early on in life was that it was impossible to make a coherent conversation with a guy drowned in his cups. She might even be indulging in some other worldly delights, considering her unusual bubbliness.

“Yeah, yeah,” Lyle said dismissively. He glanced behind him and realized that Shi was getting away. He waved impudently at Victoria, and then dashed off in pursuit of his keeper.
