“How are you doing?” he asked after another second's pause. The conversation had barely started, and already her quiet nature was coming back to bite her--for a second Fien almost regretted breaking her usual pattern and speaking first. But she'd done it, so now she was going to have to at least try to keep some semblance of a conversation going.

"I'm doing...well..." she spoke slowly, and inwardly shook her head. That sort of short, contentless, pointless line gave nothing further to be discussed--it was in essence the end of the conversation if it were to be left at that. She glanced around for a moment, as if hoping some sort of conversation topic would be lying around somewhere for her to pick up and use--no such luck. In the end, Fien simply asked, "Where are you from?" She was genuinely curious, but she immediately felt that the question was a stupid one. Well, as long as it held off the awkward silences and kept the conversation (semi)running, it served its purpose.
