At the sound of the thunder that was Michael’s voice, most of the hunters ran madly towards the woods, challenging everything and anything they could think of. Ayo chuckled quietly. Half of them could spend a whole year tracking down a single imp and would never get even close.
Ayo Bhekizita did not run. Ayo Bhekizita did not sprint, did not rush, nor did he start looking around for random trees trying to find an imp that got lost and hurt itself in its confusion. Ayo Bhekizita did exactly what his last name suggested: He watched the enemy. He watched the imps move, watched every breath they took and paid attention to the directions they ran. Nothing went unnoticed under the sight of the Enemy Watcher.
Ayo stood up, checking all his equipment for the tenth time. He would be lying if he said he wasn’t nervous, but that was no excuse to get desperate. Ayo just remained calm. He noticed other hunters that did the same. There was a man wearing a strange breathing device; there was another man with complete sharpshooter equipment; Ayo considered asking the marksman for help, but the man was too busy with his gear and Ayo thought it was best to leave him alone.
The African man sighed deeply and stepped into the forest.
The woods talked to him. He could almost hear them whispering what he wanted to know. Ayo heard a shot from the distance. He tried to focus on his surroundings. Suddenly, he heard something. A twig. Something stepped in a twig.
Ayo followed the sound the most silently as possible. He reached for his wooden stick, as he followed the other sounds the creature made; steps in the foliage, a thud on the ground. The African man hoped it wouldn’t be a very unlucky squirrel. Finally, the creature stopped, and Ayo could take a look at it. It certainly wasn’t a squirrel…
The woman seemed lost. No… not lost. She had an interesting look on her face. The hunter turned her head around, like a cat sniffing for a mouse. Suddenly a smile would appear, quickly replaced with an expression of delight. The woman was amazed with everything, wanted to see everything, to smell everything, to touch everything. Her curly brown hair matched with her brown eyes. Ayo guessed she was originally from somewhere in the Mediterranean. Greek, maybe? Middle eastern, perhaps. It really did not matter.
Ayo decided that having a support would be much better, and even so the woman didn’t seem to be carrying any kind of weapon, it was always nice to have another pair of eyes and ears. He approached her slowly, keeping his stick harmless in his back, trying not to frighten her.
“Hey you”, Ayo shouted, trying to sound as friendly as possible, “Over here! Need help with catching some imps?”
