Still sobbing into one of the many layers of cloth that made up her attire, Anja wondered whether Alex meant what he said about there being no tests today. Would he lie about it? Her thoughts returned to that happy place she imagined existed - the only place where she was free of this prison, and the only place where she ever could be free at all.... but she knew, almost resignedly, that they would never let her go... never.

The closest she had to comfort was the thin padding on her prison-like bench bed. With all the money this place must have, you'd think they could afford something more humane... It was no wonder she hated every aspect of this foulsome place - the cells, the experimentation, the doctors.... everything, and she'd never seen any of the other 'subjects', as they were called on being brought here, but only shadows in her dreams. Heartbeats, screaming out in the darkness of this awful place, and not a soul can hear them...
