They walked in rows, each holding hands, each dressed in their school uniform, with backpacks on their backs. Five rows, ten children, not all the same age. The eldest, Lena and Josef, led the group, and the second eldest, Annette and Dirk, stayed at the back, to make certain the third and fourth rows didn't wander off in curiosity. Petra, Klaus, Lukas, and Jan were all very young, in fact, all merely in day care.

The kindergartner end caps were not without supervision of course. But they were fairly well disciplined for small children. They would behave. Mostly.
