"Yeah. I guess." Esme stole a glance at Benjamin, evaluating his loss of smile, the way he held himself.

She didn't know exactly what happened at the moment when a young man tripped over her foot, but she was instantly standing ramrod. As one of the poor, any rude behavior, even one where she hadn't meant it, such as tripping this guy, meant consequences. It was best to apologize quickly and make it up to the person in any way, shape, or form. But the boy didn't give her time to apologize. Instead, he clambered to his feet and glared at her in such a way that she flinched. Even his voice, strong and scolding, reminded her of someone with high authority.

"I'm sorry," she said quietly and gave him a quick bow as she spoke, a sign of inferiority to her people. Yet it occurred to her that she was not the only one responsible for what had just happened. And secondly, she wasn't with her people any longer. She wasn't expected such high graces towards others. "But in all seriousness," she continued, meeting his sharp purple gaze with her own sea-green glare, "you should have watched where you were going."
