Paul knew that Selene would not back down, in fact he was counting on it. He was hoping that the shapeshifter would leave, but was hoping that the shapeshifter would submit for her own safety. Selene wouldn't kill her then, and they would have an ally against the vampires at the base of the water fall. However it always seemed to end in a fight when werewolves were involved. He stayed by Selene's side as she approached the shapeshifter, and knew that he could tip the balance of the fight his and Selene's favor. He knew the importance of tactics, and this was one he had used before. Dishonorable, attacking a foe with its back turned, but better than being dead. He parted from Selene and was walking on an angle to get a flanking position to trap the shapeshifter as best as possible. He nodded at Selene, confirming that she was right, that it was a false stalemate trap.
