As Briarose spoke her message, Contalabutte stood near her and and studied her every move. The way she held a breath, or wet her lips, or paused. All of it was interesting to him. But his overall impression was that she did not cause a fuss, and delivered a very straight-forward message. It was just as Contalabutte asked for. He found himself relieved, pleasantly surprised with his new wife. It was as if she had given him a gift.

“More than acceptable,” he replied to her soft question. “Briarose, my Queen, every thing you do is exquisite. I’m sure your message will be a bright beacon to your son, leading him out the darkness that has gripped him.”

Contalabutte called for another servant and had the pixie carried away to be released. Once the servant left, the Emperor coaxed Briarose out of her chair, taking her by the hands if need be to make her stand. Sometimes it felt like he was moving about a lifesize doll. He was determined to get his kiss, however. Without asking, he stepped near her and forced his lips upon hers. He attacked her mouth like an animal, hungrily, invasively. He wanted to give her a kiss that was even more awakening than her first kiss with King Ruffdor. And to Contalabutte, Briarose was in another period of sleep. He was discontent by how wan she was, how she resisted showing her emotion to him.

“I will wake you yet again,” he vowed in a growl, with his face still close to hers. His anger bubbled forth... he wanted passion from her!

“Now pack your things for our honeymoon,” he said, releasing her. The irritation was still in his voice. “We will leave soon with the Darahurne.”
