The image beneath the hood was unexpected. It was a face- that much was obvious, but it was like a clean slate. There was no nose, no eyes, no mouth, no features save for the pale skin covering the skull. Then it twisted, the horrifically blank features turning into a swirling black hole that grew larger and larger until the forest, the men, even Avery had disappeared leaving Ryan int he nightmarish abyss.
Then things began to settle- the utter blackness no longer swirling but incredibly still. There was nothing, absolutely nothing for what seemed like seconds or years, it was hard to tell in the blank space. Then, there were flashes of action playing out before Ryan without him being able to do anything but watch. The hooded men carrying Avery away from the forest, the faery tied to an iron bed post, the metal causing welts on his skin. Fiery tortures that spun by, injuries too numerous to count, all swirling into one combined picture, going faster and faster and faster until suddenly...
Avery sat up in bed with a howl, eyes wild as he searched around the room, his body aching with old pains he'd thought he'd never feel again. He was choking on the air, trying to figure out where he was. It wasn't until he saw his battered violin case placed with care near his bed that he realized it had just been another nightmare. He trembled, holding himself tightly.
