Michaline fought not to sigh. Her broother could be so overwhelmingly protecting of her, but it was something she did appreciate, even if it was smothering at times. She gave her brother a sideways glance as he reprimanded her through his teeth, and said nothing. She didn't speak again until they had gotten well away from the school and they were alone except for Shirlee.
"I did nothing that witch didn't deserve. Besides, the bitch set up the other girl who I hit in the first place." In truth, she was feeling guilty for letting her anger make her decisions before she thought things through. It made her think too much of Macon. And he was someone she never wanted to think about again. For a month he hadn't even looked at her, let alone do anything else. She was finally getting some semblance of peace in her life, even if it was just a small measure of it.
"And if I remember right, you're the one who punched Douglas in the face." The corner of her mouth twitched a bit, knowing that the comment would irk Max, but all the while he would know she didn't actually mean anything by it. She swung her bag over her shoulder, thankful that she had packed an extra set of clothes in it, considering Max had dragged her off campus without giving her a chance to change. Suddenly she turned to Shirlee, asking "Shi-shi, what did you say to Douglas, anyway? He looked pretty shocked when you turned away from him."
